Season 32 Work Trophy – Round 9 - Porto

The penultimate race of the season – it’s time for some Portuguese sunshine.

The Portuguese Grand Prix was a motorsports event held for several years, mostly in the 1950s and then in the 1980s and 90s. It was a Formula One race between 1958 and 1960 and between 1984 and 1996.

The first event was held on the Boavista street course in Porto on 17 June 1951 as a sports car race. The Grand Prix was moved to Monsanto Park, Lisbon, in 1954 as a one-off. The first Formula One race was held in 14 August 1958 in Boavista, won by Stirling Moss in a Vanwall.

Story of my season so far, retirement. This time I binned it due to overdriving. Enjoyed a few laps chasing Rob before that.

For one reason or another I can't give the Brabham much justice. I tend to overdrive it and end up retiring more often than not. Will be in another motor for the final round. Good luck to those still running  :).

Sorry Bob for T2 rear ending, I was going out of your draft to see the brake point but was too late. Sorry to Alan that suffered the most cause the abnormal slowing down for the crash ahead.
The plan was to survive at this dangerous track, but I fall in the easiest point.  :-[

Thanks Tristan :)

Challenging track, raced before with 65s here. It punishes mistakes like no other track. Put in some decent mileage few hours before the race online, but still was improving. In quali had a few good laps, hard to get the laps together here.

In race Tris got away better, I had setup my 1st gear for the second tight lefthander. Tris went wide tho, and Sam didn't get enough tow to outbrake me. Tried not to push too much, but rather focussing on the lines. Had taller gearings because of engine management and also shortshifted when possible. Sam kept me honest early on, also I made a few little mistakes having close calls. The longer the race the more cars dropped out, like Sam and Bob. Doni inherited P2 but I had a big lead. The engine was slightly hotter than I prefer most of the lap, especially when putting in fast laps. Also my shifting wasn't that clean. 4 laps before the finish the engine went at the end of the long straight,  camshaft failure...

No complaints, it's a wake up call to focus on clean shifting again and managing the water temp better. ;)

Well deserved win for Doni after some hard luck this season!  :thumbup1: Also well done to Andreas and Dean for their podium finishes! :) Commiserations to the retirements...

Grats Doni well deserved win for a regular fast performer.....(and team mate  ;))
My race ended when my Brabham was eaten by a ravenous haybale after the first few laps, it took a bite of my rear end and would not let go!!

Although the race was good as far as my track graphics were concerned I had issues with the "car setup" page which was it VERY blurred, almost like looking at it through raindrops on glass ??? did anyone else experience this? or have any info about that strange effect?

Hello everyone,

Fast circuit but I do not have enough chips to be able to take a chassis faster than the Cooper.

At the end of the long straight in the first lap, I hit Doni who brakes very hard because of the collision in front of him, I'm in the straw boots and can not get out, end of the race, too bad.

Fortunately, Doni can continue and even win, congratulations for this great victory.

Thank you everyone and see you soon  :)

Thanks and also well done for you for winning the championship!  :thumbup1:
Was very surprised when I saw you loosing the lead. That put me on the second spot, so I cannot complain.  ;) Even with a spin in the fast part of the track while Clive was behind me and gave me good pressure. Was all about keeping it together until the End.  8)
See you at the next race.

I have not looked at the replay yet Tris, but I felt that you hit me??  If I was at fault, of course I will apologise.

Y'all know who Tony Dean was, right?  Giant Killer.  That just about sums up my taking the gold at Porto.  Any number of drivers were more worthy.  Luck just wasn't a lady.

I did handful of laps prior to set the fuel requirement.  This is such a tricky venue that my hopes weren't high.  Lotsa little traps like tram rails waiting to shunt the imprudent.  Angled curbs which redirect the car violently.  And the hay bales.  'Struth!

The Lap01 tangle approaching T2 had me squirming in my chair.  Thought I was a goner.  Lucky to have slowed enough and move to the right to avoid Bob but in so doing, I took away Alain's escape route.  Geeezzz...  Sorry, mon ami.  Found myself in a highly unexpected P4 at the end of the lap and resolved at this point to just be damn careful.  Having been handed a gift, just don't throw it away!

From the Lap01 incident ahead of me involving Bob and Fulvio, I reckoned that Bob might well have some sort of damage.  In the next laps, on two occassions, he fell back to me with minor incidents involving bales and such and from what I could determine, he might well have sustained even more damage.  GPLRA Mechanical Report confirms this.  With Sam's demise, I was now up into a podium position.  LOL!  Incredible!  Then on Lap08, Bob lost it approaching the final corner and spun.  I eased by praying that his Lotus wouldn't arc across my bow.  PHEW!  Made it!

'Max' Fleurke was long gone in the lead and doing his usual standout drive.  I determined to make the last half of the race a measured drive with no mistakes and no dramas.  Bob had recovered in the Lotus and was back about 10s and ever a threat to close.  It was at this point that I threw down a low 2m14s lap just to let him know that I did have some reserve.  With Bob's retirement just passed half distance, my pitboard showed a comfy gap back to Andreas.

I resolved to just cruise in from that point with a tasty if fortunate P2 to tuck into my pocket.  Imagine my shock when my pitboard flashed me a 'P1' signal with five laps to run.  ???  NO!  Poor Robert.  No justice there, champ.

Managed to survive the pitfalls and bring the Bluebird home.  Andreas a fine P2 and Dean surviving a few incidents to nail down P3.

Clive...  That image problem you mentioned re the setup page sounds much like I have to deal with most every day in the cockput!  LOL!

Dean...  Must ask...  Why do you leave the server to rejoin late and start at the back?  This seems to be your regime of late.  Curious.

Hi Clive,
What graphics card are you using? I can force a similar experience from the Nvidea control panel by setting "Antialiasing - FXAA" to "yes".

TTFN

Will take a look before this evenings race  ;)

No worries re the shunt Fulvio...although it is somehow ironic as I was wondering whether to pass on the long straight so early on, having the power I decided I would!  I think this is a rare incident for you.  I was surprised to be able to carry on and didn't really notice the damage, I did have some issues in the section after the hairpin but assumed that to be the groove.

I like the track but it is defo a challenge in these cars, lots to hit, etc.  I remember driving here before in something with less power (poss a 65) and the track wasn't nearly the challenge.  However, I have to say I drove poorly and deserved to end-up in a sticky bale after mundanely running a bit wide through T1.

WD on the win Doni, a sensible drive, bad luck Robert, but congrats on a stellar season.

Thx for hosting,

Bob
