Title: UKGPL Season 32 (2017-18) 1955 Grand Prix - Silverstone - Feb 20
Post by: EvilClive on February 16, 2018, 03:36:06 PM +0000
Season 32 Historic Trophy – Round 10 - Silverstone

The final round of the championship will be held at the circuit which hosted the very first race in the F1 world drivers championship. Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the present Finish Straight, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years. Since 1975 the track has been modified with the introduction of chicanes etc – we will be using the 1960’s layout.

Sorry to Doni for punt lap 2.  :-[

I was desperately trying to scrub off speed, even tried using the inside wall to avoid, but couldn't. Then, I let the wrong Mercedes past in attempted recompense.  :P

As for these cars, fun to drive solely for the challenge (and historical interest) maybe, but there's no racing going on. It's just hotlapping at your own pace, with the occasional obstacle. Passes only happen when someone screws up (and doesn't take out those following). Can't challenge, because these cars need to be sideways to scrub speed after the brakes do what they do, and when the car ahead is using 80% of the track just trying to stay on the black stuff...

Never mind how much more difficult it is to keep out of other's incidents when you've got a floppy car with no brakes.

Add the moderation team's apparent attitude that passes have to completely done before the passee even realizes what's going on or "that was not an 'advisable' place to attempt a pass, if you can't stay in the other guy's extremely narrow field of view then stop being so aggressive, because others have no responsibility to maintain anything like situational awareness, after all they've only done hmmm let's see here OVER 700 RACES races with UKGPL".

IMO, the only racing possible with these cars would be at tracks where the brake is not used more than once per lap (e.g. Indianapolis), i.e. there aren't a factor at all.

So if they come back next season, count me out.

Another mess by yours truely!

Qualified 6th but was last on the track at the end of qually so had no time to do the fuel calcs I was trying to do.  Bunged 80+ litres in it and was too late to start.

Started from the pit lane and had a good battle with Phil and emerged in 6th with Tim just up the road.  But the fight to get there had destroyed my brakes and I had to go easy for a few laps, watching Tim pull away.

Think I was still 6th at the end too.

When is next season?

For a strange phenomenon the car has moved before the start despite the clutch pedal pressed. Is time that my pedals have strange interaction with my old wheel,i hope to solve later with a new wheel.I have continued the race also if i was disqualified. From my reaplay my position was 9 between Doni and James.I leave the decision to the moderator on what to do.
Was difficult to understand when the car behind was in real dubbing, with the doubt i have gived way.

Sorry about the contact at Stowe on lap 24 (0h43m53s) Doni. For some reason my car seemed to pull to the left under braking.  I didn't notice it in praccy, only when I looked at the replay (including the dress rehearsal on lap 9 (0h16m52s)).

Really enjoyed it but an average race, finished 9th, where I started.

Blew an engine, maybe damaged in the touch from Bastian, but other than that I only made one mistake where I spun after running out of brakes.

Had to almost constantly manage the brakes here and coasted into Copse, Stowe and Club most of the time.

Great fun season but I'm looking forward to getting back to some wheel to wheel stuff in 65s next season................

If you're revving the engine when you select a gear the car will always roll forward, unless you have a foot on the brake.

Not a great race for me, even considering the fact I was in a Vanwall (Silverstone actually suits the understeering pig!).
Way back in the mists of time I stated I'd stick to the original rules regarding token allocations,  so  I was operating on 5 less than the official tables.

This posed a problem as Sam was only 15 points behind and had the tokens for a Merc, which I fully expected him to take.
So I did some practice laps in both the Fez 625 and the Vanwall as they were the fastest cars I could use. I was supprised when the Vanwall turned out to lap nearly a second quicker in race pace so used that.
I also tried the Merc and Lancia out of curiosity, I found the Lancia to be quicker and technically had the tokens....  Eventually I stuck to my original decision.

Qualifying went very well, I even had the potential to knock a further half second off my time but missed my final hotlap by a second due to letting axel by on his own fast lap. Uli would still have been safe even had I managed this.

The start went well also, I held 2nd and was fighting for the lead nicely. Uli then ran slightly wide and I jumped him along hanger straight. Then on lap 2 Clive ran out of brakes and took me for a dancing lesson. Knowing how important this race was I might have had a moment of screamy sweary rage while getting back on track in about 4th.
Not too bad yet though as I was not too far back and faster than some of the drivers in front.
Then on about lap 4 I clipped a curb and got thrown out of control into the In-field.

I rejoined much further back and was now raging and swearing at myself as Sam was now 4 spots and .8 of a mile ahead.
All I could do was drive as clean and as fast as I could while wishing mechanical misfortune on those ahead ;)

Eventually the gods smiled on me as Uli blew up and Clive either crashed on his own or got involved in a backmarker.

I came home 3rd convinced i'd lost the championship until I checked my maths after Sam congratulated me.  Won by 2 points, can't get much closer than that!

Well done to the podium and to Sam for a hard fought championship. I've really enjoyed this and had some fantastic racing on the way.
If we do another I'm tempted to only take the Gordini just to showcase it's gallic superiority to all the silly red, green and silver cars  :P

Ok first of all Big apologies to Tim for Stowe on lap 2. My fault entirely as I was caught out by your early braking on disc brakes   ::). I did try and steer inside and let the brakes off to maybe fly past you on the inside and impale the wall rather than take you out...but I failed in that too??!!
There was no intention to pass, simply to follow for a few laps until things settled down. I waited to allow you back in front, but we both lost a few places, and I guess I might lose more after moderating  :-\.

The rest of the race was quite interesting as I eased my way back up through the field and slowly reeled in Tris, until he ran wide and I scampered through into 3rd. Then a shock when I passed Uli who was crawling to move into 2nd!!

Prib appeared to have a bit of a mental breakdown towards the end because cars were jumping around on my display so it was hard to work out where Sam was. Phil was always the next car up the road, even if I thought I had just passed him?? Well that was until I was closing on a pair of backmarkers down Hanger Straight, with Tris recovering quickly behind I was hoping to pass the pair out of Stowe. Then Phil and Doni got a little enthusiastic about exchanging paint samples and were both cartwheeling all over the available tarmac. With nowhere to go, and no brakes to stop the car, I took one of the only two options possible... I hit Doni!!
By the time I could reset Tim and Tris were through ... 2nd to 4th  :scared: with about 5 laps to go. A SnG and Uli slipped past as I exited the pits.
But with full tanks and cold tyres I struggled to chase him and I was resuigned to finishing 5th until Uli lost the tail on the last lap at Chapel and gifted me the place.
Sort of relieved that my early screw up did not stop Tim taking the championship. ::) and grats to the podium places.

Still some moderating to be done, but I doubt that will affect the championship places ( unless I can find a way to promote myself by 10 places and DQ several others.  ;D )

Grats on the race victory, Sam!

Terrific job by Tim to emerge...by all of two points over Sam...as our inaugural 1955 mod Champ.  You're right up there with Fangio now.  :)

Dean...  Poo happens.  The '55's ARE difficult to judge.

Phil...  Strange off for you on Lap09 as you tried to out-brake me into Stowe.  Like your Lancia just veered off to the left.  Seems a near carbon-copy of this on Lap23 but this time collecting my Merc.  Not altogether apparent from the cockpit or chase view but my TV1 cam indicates pretty clearly that the red car moves over on me.  Three cars...including poor Clive...on their lids.  My only real regret is that the time lost including a S&G for a reset, cost me P5 to Bastian in the championship tables.

There were nine reset Shift-R's in this event including one pour moi.  The 'offs' by just about everyone are too numerous to count.  I endeavoured to keep it on the road as much as possible with consistency the goal and managed no less than 10 consecutive laps in the 1m48s bracket.  There needs to be a quantum shift in how people approach these 1955 mod races.  I think people need to rein in their enthusiasm and hopefully, next season, these 1955 mod events will be with PRO DAMAGE where you'll pay the price for over-driving.  That's as it should be, imo.  To that end, I refer you to this thread over at the ADC that I put up a couple of months back.  It was inspired by some events that looked like they belonged in the script of Death Race 2000...

http://forums.speedgeezers.net/index.php?showtopic=39796

Ah, yes, and before I forget.  Tris...  Your manners in qualifying here were appalling.  Interfering with another member's efforts on a hot lap is subject to penalty.  Wise up!  Being a Frenchman is no excuse!  :)

It was a horror race all in all.

I had some minor contacts in the first lap but came around quite well.
But i was in red zone with the brakes and the engine all the time.

the first incident was hitting the spinning tim and my steering was much to the left so i had to s/r.
I didn't realize i could not get to an fast stop with my car off the line (red brakes)so i stood there around in the apex of stowe and need to let pass everyone for my first s/r...

The second s/r due to an engine failure

Several offs in club due to red brakes including avoid uli after his s/r.

Last but not least the Phil incident, who rejoined off the race line but i couldn't stick to the race line so much because brakes were red and i overbreaked instinctively when seeing Phil which made it of course worse with the 55er cars.

Oh mann...:(

Well if this wasn't racing then I don't know what it was:-

Phil and Fran were giving each other so much room that I was able to drive down the middle and pass them both!
Phil and I were side by side in Stowe but I managed Club on my own, sort of!
I wouldn't say that it was settled until I had seen off Phil's attempt at the outside of Woodcote, which he followed up, I think, with a tank slapper into Copse!

Great racing Phil.

Great snapshot Clive  :).

And hearty congrats to our inaugural '55 champ Tim! Well deserved mate, as you were the man to beat at most circuits.

I was fortunate to see arch rival Tim & Clive go off at Stowe corner early on. While it was a shame not to battle on track, I was too preoccupied trying to catch Uli for the lead. We had a great battle almost all race, cut short by his engine going pop. A pity it ended that way but hope to keep battling next season Uli  8).

Towards the end I was wondering if I could sneak into winning the championship with Tim in 4th place. But Clive's incident late on promoted Tim to 3rd, giving him the points to hold on the crown. Well played.

I for one really enjoyed racing with this mod. I agree, in terms of racing it is difficult, but keeping the machines on the road is another, to my mind enjoyable, challenge altogether. It also appears that though people can extract incredible performance over one lap, doing so over a race distance isn't really sustainable and consequently evens the field somewhat. Bumps and scrapes are inevitable with this mod, but yes, people do need to be more careful, especially in the braking zones. Most of my passes this season were completed getting better exits out of corners, rather than passing people under braking.

Cheers guys, until next time.

well done Tim for championchip and Sam for the race....
Lucky final result for me as some drivers got troubles in front ....I think it was my last race in 55, sadly !....I find this mod very nice , all is quite good....but really the breack are irrealistics !!...and I love GPL for his realism....

Ah ! yes !....Doni !!??  what are you talking aboiut ???.....when I go out of pits , I'm behind you....I stay all the lap behind you to don't disturb you....then I  finish the lap still behind you......at this time I AM ALSO IN A QUICK LAP same as you !!!!   ....how many laps I must stay ( wait ) behind you ?????....till you are happy of your lap and stop??.... then maybe you let me pass !???....so we are together in a quick lap , I go inside at Beckettes and pass.....I go little while and you try to cross my line but you go outside and do absolutly nothing to avoid me  you don't let any room and hit me out of track !!!(unfortunatly the contact eject you out of track ...lol..!)...after looking attentively the reaplay I can say that you intentionaly kick me out of track and also that is not the first time since I cross your way in GPL.....and YOU should have a penalty ...!!not me !    .....so please, stop your bullshit !...on track and forum!

( If you want I got the qualif session reaplay and I can give it to the moderators ...or put it on the forum then everybody can juge my  and your behaviour !.....and be Canadien don't change anything !)
