50th Anniversary Race
The 50th anniversary of the untimely death of Jim Clark will be next month, 7 April.  To mark this event, and celebrate the life of this great racing driver, there will be a SimRacing.org.uk race event on Tuesday 10th April.

Silverstone 1967 - Lotus 25 - April 10

Password:  see above (#post_event_password) (released 24hrs before the race)

Car:  Lotus 25
Jim Clark won more Formula 1 races in this car (13) than any other, and it was the car that took him to his first World Championship in 1963.

Venue:  Silverstone 1967
Jim Clark won the British Grand Prix 5 times, twice on this very layout at Silverstone, including once in the Lotus 25.

Livery:  Green and yellow No.8
All cars will be the same, so everyone can be Jim Clark for the day.

Format:
Practise: 30 minutes.
Qualifying: 15 minutes.
Race 1: 25 minutes, to mark Jim Clark's 25 F1 wins.
Race 2: 25 minutes, but with complete reverse grid of the result of race 1.

Race 2 will give those real "Jim Clark's" the chance to replicate Jim cutting through the opposition.   At the 1967 Italian GP, Jim Clark was in 15th and 1 lap down after a puncture but drove though the whole field back into first position, only to run out of fuel on the last lap.

Time & Date:
Tuesday 10th April 2018
Practise: 19:30
Qualifying: 20:00
Race 1: 20:15
Race 2: Follows immediately after race 1 (No server re-start required.)

I'll hopefully be able to make this.
Although just to be a pedant, the top picture is a lotus 49. The 25 used Coventry Climax V8's  (and the BRM unit in '66)

You are correct.  It is a Lotus 49-Ford Cosworth DFV.  The photo was taken on the car's race debut at Zandvoort on 4 June 1967.

Although to be pedantic, the top picture doesn't actually suggest it is of the Lotus 25.  I just thought it was a nice photo of Jim Clark.

I probably have a decent setup from the season we raced with these not so long ago, but probably better to get one off fmg or Matteo who have a handle on setting up these old cars  :-\

Finding time to practise for this is the tricky bit for me with a gt3 race Sunday night and a f599 race weds eve as well as MotoGP and f1 to watch this weekend!  :o wife will be happy

Chris, Porko and Felix were the fast boys in the Lotus champ. So far I've done a couple of laps using an unmodified setup from an earlier round. As you can see on the lap time link its currently rubbish  ;D

Title: Re: UKAC Jim Clark Event - Silverstone 1967 - April 10
Post by: Fabri Fibra on April 06, 2018, 01:16:48 PM +0100
The most important thing for setup is to increase the tyres pressure, the default value is totally wrong. I used 38 psi.
For the rest I think that the differential is the car's soul and that it greatly affects on handling. My "default" differential was 60-35.

In any case, for go fast, the most important thing is to understand how to drive these cars. As said several times by Chris, these cars need slide, when she starts to slide is not yet at the limit, you can push much more.

The reality is that I understood why I was 4 seconds slower just because Fabri or the old Porko :D told me to increase the default pressure to 37 or 38 psi.
Unfortunately I never had a setup from Gavino on this car, so it's better if you rely on what you read on this topic by the other guys. As Fabri pointed out, differential set is really important, but depends a lot on how you use the right foot and by your driving skill. Brake bias is also very important. I understood how to drive that car in a proper way only at the Nordschleife in an epic final lap with Chris R. A bit too late than usual ;)

Mark: I hate to ask the obvious, but are you sure you've set the eye pieces correctly and got it in the right place on your head?
The lenses have a very specific focal point so if it's not in the right place they won't be too clear. As they're focused to infinity (and beyond!) you really shouldn't be getting eye strain.

I'll be joining the fight for last tonight probably, i thought this was next week so didn't practice last night like I should have..

Yeah tried various adjustments but think it’s just down to my now older eyes that get a battering at work all day and then the rift is like having your eyes pressed up against a bright tv screen for 40mins plus   :P

However I hooked it up again this eve after getting out of work a bit early. Single seaters are superb with a rift  8) love looking about over the suspension arms or engine cowling, so lifelike  :) so I’ll race with it tonight

Please someone tell me they have the replay for the first race?! Mine only autosaved the 2nd one - I really want to see the epic 3 way fight at the end of race 1!

As for the event - that was a cracker. Well done Ceolmor for coming up with such a fitting (and fun!) tribute!

Even though I won the 2nd race the 1st was by far my favorite. From Jeffrey stealing pole from me mere seconds before the start, through the continual battle for 2nd, and the frankly rediculous 3 way fight we had when Jeffery and I slowed each other enough for Felix to catch us.
Even I'm not sure how I held my do-or-die drift into Woodcote from the middle of a 3 wide gaggle of Loti, but I'm pretty certain that's what secured 2nd for me - it felt like a win after that fight!  8)

I hope everyone else enjoyed that as much as I did - what a cracking combo.

Thanks to Ceolmor for setting this thing up, it turned out to be epic. It's been a long time since I've had such eventful races  ;D. I'll need to watch the replay for the post race debrief, as there was too much going on  :D.

FMG is Jim Clark. You guys just watch how he is driving a car near turn's walls ( 5 sm) in precision drift. I see this wonder in first time in AC! Congrats FMG! You are the best of the best of the bests ! I imagine how you pass this tirns in VR.. Ahhh!   :thumbup1:
BTW. I lost both starts with Jeff's setup taken from STracker just before the races.     ;D
Was fun for me to see how the whole peloton is passing me in 2nd start race  :w00t:

Think I've imported the results the wrong way round - doh. The qualification positions look right but there are some silly times in there again.

Well done everyone on avoiding my woeful starts, especially race 2 where all but 2 of you were behind me! I was dead last by the end of Hanger Straight on that 1st lap then Baikal had his moment at let me passed. Ended up in both races having a tussle with Ceolmor for the last few laps, he was obviously quicker when he got it together but the tortoise won out even thought I tried to give it to him in the first race.

I've proved I'm no Jim Clark, mind you I think we all knew that already  ::) Thanks for organising this Ceolmor and thanks to all who turned out.

First off, thanks to Ceolmor for organising, a nice idea and good fun combo. :)

However I had a torrid night of racing  :'( instead of improving my pace I was instead woefully off it through qually to the tune of +1.3 secs over my consistent times on the practise server the night before  :o ??? I can only blame the Rift unless the track conditions were different? I kept clipping the blinking apex wall or having bizarre oversteer spins late-mid apex. It was very frustrating and I had to make a late change to my setup to make it driveable.
Race 1 got a good start and made up some places enjoying the close combat awareness you get from a rift. Sadly someone else didn’t and promptly knocked me off sideways (on a straight!) despiteSilverstone being an ex ww2 bomber base and therefore very wide!  ::)
That got me hot and flustered and I spent half the race just trying to recatch the field including a stutter mid corner that made me spin again.
I finally got back in the rhythm and set some 1:41&2 laptimes to finish a respectable 6th  :)

I was intending not to do race2 as could feel the rift already hurting my eyes but as it was fun I carried on. Got another great start to overtake a couple before t1 and held a high spot until about Stowe or club corner when someone just in front of me had a wobble and I had to hit the brake hard which pitched me backwards into the wall - race over.

Great skills up front  8) a fitting memorial race.

I like these, I enjoyed the series with them, though I find them frustrating
For some other sims, and certain cars, I run with auto gears when the car has unusually strong
engine braking like these do. I really struggle with these for corner entry, which was pathetically
slow last night as in some corners, even with great care, and blipping the throttle the back end
had a mind of it's won and would spin easily. What sort of coast diff were people using for these?
I tried a really high coast diff setting, but decided that was too wimpy so used 40%

Thanks guys for organising this :)

Mark, it was with me that you bumped on hangar straight. From my perspective I was driving straight and then I got bumped sideways. Looking at the replay I could see that I was going slightly to the left to take the line for the next corner and at the same time you were going slightly to the right. I had plenty of room to my right, it's a fact but you also had space to your left. It was a shame that happened but I don't think I was the only cause for the bump.

Great races! Thank you Ceolmor for this event.

Congratulations to all the participants, excellent races with very few contacts or mistakes. This is really good and difficult to see in other places.

I had bad qual. Race 1, I started well and managed to get the lead after a small mistake of FMG. Then I simply controlled the race, without having to push too much because the pilot behind me were in fight.
Race 2, difficult to vamp having to pass the whole group, but it went quite well. I was in the traffic for the "3rd place fight" between Jeffrey and Porco. A fourth place without praise, but dignified.

The pic of FMG in drifing in front of Jeffrey and Felix is epic. So '60s!

I think I was running 5 for coast last night, I run fairly high pre-load though which makes the car less snappy.

You need to be very heavy on the heal and toe to prevent rear locking under braking, more then once I had to heal and toe into hanger despite not actually needing to change gear, but just to unlock the rear wheel/s.

An no problem at all Felix, I was making a joke out of how wide it is  ;D besides you have more than helped me out with setup advice in the past
It’s odd if it was you though, I was looking across at another car that was nose to nose with me but there was a big gap between us, then next moment I felt a side on clunk (wheel to wheel sound) that caused the off, so I presumed someone else had crept up on my stern  :-\
No biggie anyway   :-*
