Season 33 - 65 - Round 3 - Mosport

Welcome to the 3rd round of the combined 65s championship.

For the first season we use the new 65 token system for your car choice,
so please read the rules and car ranking on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=638&theme=6)

Mosport held its first major race in 1961, when Stirling Moss, who won, suggested changes to the proposed hairpin, which then became the two corners called Moss in his honour. The first ever Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham.  The circuit was used again in 1969 in a race won by Jackie Ickx.  Jackie Stewart crashed out after tangling with a back marker, the privateer Al Pease, who was being lapped for the fourth time at only half distance.  At the end of the race, Al Pease was disqualified and to this day remains the only driver to be disqualified for being too slow.

The rules and driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=638&theme=6)

We race in intermediate mode.

- Pro driver have no shift+r available
- Intermediates and Amateurs have a single shift+r with a stop and go in the pits available!

Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

Tokens updated in race post.  Sorry for the late posting, I've been busy.  Good luck tonight, hopefully the token count doesn't come as a total surprise to anyone.

I had a good start and lead to Moss, but I was a bit to careful at breaking point I think, that has the consequence that Tris was surprised and hit me in the barriers. Grande casino followed - great impressions from burning but racing cars ...
Nice battle follows until Signore Molteni hit me on the straight when i was passing  :(
My car was out of balance I hit the barriers for the third and last time but could reach the pits on three wheels where I finished much to early :(

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1FNBOvUFojqfv0RyrArH_IpC1Pm2pwoBYANlbhr1BDVU).  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Tris after this race you now have 5 tokens. So that means you will have 15 tokens to spend on a car for the next round at Monza 10K. So the best you can have is a BRM. If you do take the BRM you will have zero tokens left. So that would mean you would have to take the Cooper or BT7 for Syracuse.

If you want to confirm the token calculation, please check the spreadsheet via the link in my previous post.

Got caught up twice by other cars going through Moss. The first lap incident required a stop & go. I spent several laps chasing Jack but found it difficult to find a passing opportunity. I tried to be careful not to do what I did & tap him from behind from the entrance to Moss. This was the worst outcome as Jack had to negotiate a 3 point turn in a very awkward place. On the replay I saw that Dean came unstuck trying to pass Jack who was doing a commendable job of trying to get out of the way. I waited for Jack to recover which left me well down the order. The second half of the race was more measured - keeping ahead of teammate DC so he didnt lap me & trying to close on Phil. I got rather close on the last lap when my wheel parted company with the desk top. Another bad race but clocked my fasted race lap in a Brabham - so not a total disater.

Mind if I disagree? Jack tagged me by backing up blind into traffic  :o, which you can hear approaching even if GPL doesn't let you see, robbing me of the only clear piece of track. I'd slowed enough and was through when I hear his engine rev and *nudge* oh yeah I'm ****ing sideways. If there is clear track, the following traffic is going to aim for it. You steal it, the responsibility is yours, not the guy you just knocked out of the lead (of possibly his first pro win. yes, there's a bit of venting here, forgive me).

In that situation, don't make a bad scene worse. If you can't move safely, don't move.

Grats Clive, good recovery Tris. You had me plenty worried for the last 2/3 distance, especially when the gap got sliced.

lol I'm leading both 65 and 67 championships, still haven't won a race in either

Sorry then Dean, you have a better appreciation of the situation than I have and I was unable to save the replay.

After the collision I was entangled with Billy and facing backwards for some time, however when the cars parted I was then broadside on.  I was late to reverse out of that situation, if there was contact with a car once I began to reverse, rather than be spun around by the after effect of the collision then the responsibility is entirely mine.

Not a great race but a good result and recovery drive from dead last after spinning lap1 and lap2 at Moss. First lap I had to brake hard as half the track was blocked but I bottomed out and spun. Lap 2 was all my own fault as I did it again. Made a few passes to get back to 2nd (Ams) and Jack was gracious in giving me room a few times.

Had a couple more spins on my own, one when I was wiping sweat from my left eye and once while turning on my fan.

I was making a pass on the outside of Billy at T8 but he squeezed me into T9 and I lifted out of it. My replay shows his car jump over towards me so maybe he didn't and my PC exaggerated it. The next lap I went for the inside but came from a long way back and he took the line (fairly). I braked harder than normal to miss him and came off the brakes for the turn but my replay shows him warp off. Apologies Billy and it's up to you if you report it of course.

After I got back to 2nd it was quite a lonely race with only the excitment of being lapped and watching the gap back to 3rd.

Great win for Dave C. and I was never going to catch him.

Sorry then Dean...

Happily accepted. Do you have F10 view mapped to a wheel button, like I do? It's handy for getting your bearings when GPL's physics eventually lets you come to a rest. Click and I know what's best: quick half-spin, get off track and turned around, or just stay where I am for a few seconds.

ETA: very entertaining replay. Some great racing, some ... not so great. Glad I'm not moderating it.  ::)

Dean - can you please make your point without the expletives (****....). Those are the ground rules for using the forum. Moss is a really awkward place to turn a car due to the proximity of the barriers & the blind approach. Drivers will have half eye on escaping & half an eye on on following traffic. My car got flipped on lap 1 when another car moved out from a prior accident on Moss, then waited several seconds to avoid respawning in the wrong place.

Read that bit again, thanks, person responsible for the fracas in question.  ::)

The server replay shows Billy's Braham as unable to make forward progress until just before you get pushed sideways by my car.  Had our cars been unimpeded by each other the corner would have been clear before you arrived.

Also, the revs on the server replay claim that I am in first gear attempting to make room on the inside by moving alongside the barrier, after which I switch to reverse without returning to the power- though what I experienced was the interlocked cars being flung apart before our collision.

You had done nothing wrong and were simply unlucky that my car finished up where it did.

On hindsight I should have moved earlier. Instead I opted to hold & give Jack time to complete his manoeuvre. Best intentions & all but probably just made matters worse. I will time a report for the I initial contact.

Spent the hot and unexpectedly sunny hours of yesterday at Mosport, spectating the 2018 VARAC Vintage Grand Prix. Featured this year were the Formula 5000 cars, a series that started in 1968, so the 50th anniversary celebration. Honorary Grand Marshal was Brian Redman.

Partial pic dump available here https://imgur.com/a/oL9eu0E (some F5000 cars, couple of others, but mostly poor views of action at corners 4, 5A and 5B ). Forgive the poor view: it was hot and very sunny, found a shady spot and just ... stayed there for a while.

The day's action came to an end early, unfortunately: http://torontosun.com/news/provincial/illinois-race-car-driver-61-dead-following-crash-on-bowmanville-ont-track.

Plan for next time at Mosport: forget the paddock, just roll around checking out the spectator rides. Example: when was the last time you saw six Daimler SP250s in one day*? Not all together, either. Just random.  :D

*edit: just checked, and that's out of 2654 ever made
