Title: UKGPL Season 33 (2018) 1967 F1 - Monaco - Jun 24
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on June 22, 2018, 06:01:10 PM +0100
Season 33 Graduates Cup – Round 4 – Monaco

For the fourth round we are at the iconic street circuit of Monaco, an original Papyrus track (although you can find some good graphic updates in the usual places). The inaugural race was staged in 1929 & whilst some modifications have been made the circuit has also been characterised by almost non-existent run off, narrow runs, tight corners, multiple gear changes & few natural overtaking places.

The registrations for this seasons Graduates Cup are not sufficient to support separate grids. Therefore, both Works & Privateers drivers will participate on the same grid. All drivers have the same tokens allocations. We will, however, run two championships, & separate points will be scored for each. A Privateer may finish the actual race 5th, but still win the Privateers race. The race will be moderated as a combined grid. Privateers are asked not to hold up a Works driver whilst being lapped, but you may race fairly for track position.

The important difference is that Privateers are permitted one reset with a compulsory Stop & Go (taken within two laps). Although the race setting is “Intermediate” Works drivers are not allowed to take a reset.

Server = UKGPL4
IP = 95.144.125.200
Race date = Sunday 24-06-2018
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Papyrus
Race length = 33 Laps (50 minutes)
Variant = 1967
60fps patch used   = 60fpsV2newmod
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qualifying time = 30-45 minutes

Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the Championship Standings Page  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=637&theme=6)

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works  / Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Privateer Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line

IGOR race list doesn't seem to be working?  I've set the practice server off but you will need to join via IP (95.144.125.200).

Sorry Dean. I think we need to do more IP praccy races to develop the best server settings.

Bad luck to those that couldn't join.

Monaco got the better of me once again. Lined up 2nd behind Greg. Pelle made a lightning start behind us and launched into the lead. Greg had a spin at the chicane which vaulted me up back up to second.

Clive nipped at my heels early on but I slowly pulled away. Managed 10 trouble free laps but then my concentration wilted and it was error after error. I made a hash of the chicane which completely ruined the handling of the car. Poor Dave Curtis who allowed me to lap him must of wondered what the hell was happening. I managed three spins in three corners! Gave up at the Gasworks. Best of luck to those still running.

This will be my last race for a while. For whatever reason I haven't been enjoying this season as much as I'd like so I'll be taking an extended break. I'll probably return, I have a history of coming back  :).

Many thanks to you all for the racing over the years. It's been a pleasure (hard to believe my first race was 10 years ago!). And to the UKGPL mod team, thank you for organising this league and for your support in helping me moderate the past couple of seasons.

Joining by IP was easy, driving round Monaco 33 times less so. Started 6th, finished 7th, but only by luck. Work travel making it difficult toplay this season, but hope to make the couple... ttfn

Dean, Tris  Did you start up Gem and select the 60FPS option before clicking on the GPL button? If you hadn't got the 60FPS option selected you wouldn't have been able to join. I can't think of any other reason why you couldn't join and 12 others could?

I'm sorry for you who could not join us, Monaco is always fun & even more with many on server.  ;)
@Samb, I hope I didn't read correctly & we'll see you to the next race, always sad to see someone leave GPL  ???
10 years in GPL is no age, I have run online since the start of 2001...but yes, with breaks  :)

Grats Clive & GT  :thumbup2:

Qual:
No excuses for missing setups for today's race...but whatever they got better  :laugh:
Again I started setting a little on setup & every thing I did today was good. At one point I am 2, improve again...but GT also does better & a little shock when Samb comes & takes my 2nd place...but yes, my qual was driven with 34 laps fuel, so I knew had hit something perfect 8)

Race:
Standing as number 3 on the grid is not so funny when you see a roaring Ferrari by your side & a Brabham in front, when you're sitting in a Honda & would like to pass...but how?
Yes Samb, think it was filled up with Danish dynamite & comes by in slowdown to T1...& what's happening here? GT gives room...I'm in front out of T1 ;)
'Almost' the rest of the race is full speed (unbelievably it went well) only think once i hit the fence a little. Why I said 'almost', start of lap 31 something turns red 8.xx...YARK, fuel, digging around lap 31 & 32 to find there's enough, full speed again on last lap ;D
Delicious when everything succeeded :yes:

A big thank you to all of you who gave space, a track you can get a little nervous when passing :thumbup1:

Grats to you all, yes Monaco is a bit tricky :sweatdrop:

Edit:
Link to Server Replay ?

I was back home after two days of trekking on Dolomiti just for the start of qualy. My legs and feet were ko, but hey I can't miss Monaco in a Cooper  ;D
Joined with 10 minutes to go and tried a clean lap with race fuel, but I was only 10th on the grid. Ok let's see what happens and try to not crash at start.
Axel that started ahead had soon a crash so I was pursuing Phil in another Coopy for many laps trying to put some pressure and not risk too much at the same time. At half distance Phil had a little spin and I was ahead so with less fuel load I started pursuing Rainier in another Coopy that had a steady pace. Soon after Arf and Dave had both a spin so I was 5th with Andreas ahead of 8 sec.
In the meantime Pelle was already lapping me so I tried to push a little more following him to see if I could gain something on Andreas, but at two laps to go Andreas had a problem at S.Devote and he was in view at only two sec. I pushed even more and set my fast lap on last lap but Andreas kept it together and we finished on parade.
It's nice when you manage to nail the chicane for 33 laps  8) :D
Ciao

Congrats Pelle and Clive!

This will be my last race for a while.

That sucks.

I haven't been enjoying this season as much as I'd like

And that sucks more. I know that feeling. I've been struggling for a while to get my computers to run GPL well. That frustrates me and diminishes my enjoyment.

I hope the mess I was making didn't contribute to your decision.

As much as a fiasco as this was for me, I still enjoyed parts of it. I'm having gpu problems again. D3dv2 was often dropping to 50fps and OGLv2 has stutters from join/disco messages. I used OGLv2 so most of the time I had 60fps. My connection wasn't very good either. The latency was normal but the quality reading ranged from 0.600-0.800. All the other cars started flickering some when I got near them. And I'd guess anybody near me would see my car warping/flickering some. My apologies guys.

My apologies to Andreas too. I wrecked in front of him in practice, taking him with me. :( And then I made him fall back from the other cars early in the race. I didn't want to make things more difficult for you.

I wish I could blame the computer for my lousy start but that was all on me. I was late turning into Saite Dévote. I should have stayed on the right and forced Pelle to pass me on the outside if possible. My spin at the chicane had me worried at first, but I quickly realized I could do a 360 without getting in other's way. As bad as the car felt, I was a bit relieved to fall back to 5th. After 4 or 5 laps the car started to feel decent but it still not quite right.

Some of the time, it was fun  racing with Clive. But shortly after I caught him, I started having another computer problem. I started get some "tearing" and even though the meter was reading 60fps I didn't look like I was getting 60fps. With my bad connection and strange graphics performance, I was tempted to retire a lap or two after catching Clive. I suspect my cpu or gpu was downclocking during the middle of the race.

My computer was handicapping me a lot while I was behind Clive. It's not like I could have passed him without the problems but I could have stayed in better position to pass if he made a mistake. My apologies for bumping you twice Clive. I was a bit ashamed of myself driving like I was in Nascar, bumping Clive and the guard rails. I hope you realize I was trying to be careful.

At times, it was a lot of fun trying to get past Clive. I thought I was slow through Gazométres but Clive was slower than I was. I tried a few times to do an over and under move there. I often made a wide entry and tried to exit on the inside. I needed the wide entry to ensure if I locked a wheel I'd hit the haybales on the left instead of Clive. I almost made that move work once. I got beside him on the pit straight once. Unfortunately, I happened to do it on a lap when we were lapping a Honda. Things were getting a bit crazy at that point. I was very happy to see Clive miss that Honda. It looked close.

Clive was good out of Portier and through the tunnel. That ensured I'd never be able to beat him to Tabac. He might have been slow in the middle of Gazométres but he could get a good enough exit that I no real chance of passing on the pit straight. I usually carried more momentum through Saite Dévote but the damn track is too narrow for me to ever have a chance to pass him before Massenet. I thought I had him once at Massenet. He looked like he was going to slide wide and I might slip through on the inside. But no, he was just making his car wider by blocking both sides of the track. :)  I got a good laugh from that one.

I stuck with Clive through most of the race until I spun at Tabac late in the race. I thought it was bad driving on my part but I realized on the next lap that it was the car. The last few laps the Brabham was terrible at Tabac. Jack wouldn't have been happy with the way I beat on his car.

Half of the race was fun. Half of it was frustrating. I've changed gpus again. I reinstalled an old Radeon gpu. It never had the join/disco stutters but it lacks a bit in performance. It might need me to turn down the graphic settings a little but hopefully it will give me a trouble free experience.

Overall, I'm not too disappointed. I did one thing decent. I don't think I took any car out of the race. And that's usually my biggest goal. Don't spoil anybody's fun by wrecking them.

Thanks guys.

It's a shame to see that Tristan and Dean couldn't connect. I wondered where they were along with Doni.

Ah, one more thing. It wasn't until lap 30 or 31 that I got my tires up to a good temperature. A damaged car, a bad computer, and cold tires made this one, one heck of a chore/adventure.

Yeah, that was a good one. Glad that I am the highest Cooper in the End.  :)

Congratulations to the Podium and Finishers!
