Title: UKGPL Season 33 (2018) 1967 F1 - Daytona - Jul 22

Season 33 Graduates Cup – Round 6 – Daytona Road Circuit

Something a bit different for Round 6, the Daytona International Speedway at Daytona Beach, Florida. The venue is famous for the oval used for the prestigious Daytona 500 NASCAR race. We will use the sports car course which combines high speed oval racing with big 180 degree turns often seen on US tracks. Get ready for 25 brutal laps …

The registrations for this seasons Graduates Cup are not sufficient to support separate grids. Therefore, both Works & Privateers drivers will participate on the same grid. All drivers have the same tokens allocations. We will, however, run two championships, & separate points will be scored for each. A Privateer may finish the actual race 5th, but still win the Privateers race. The race will be moderated as a combined grid. Privateers are asked not to hold up a Works driver whilst being lapped, but you may race fairly for track position.

The important difference is that Privateers are permitted one reset with a compulsory Stop & Go (taken within two laps). Although the race setting is “Intermediate” Works drivers are not allowed to take a reset.

Server = UKGPL4
IP = 109.180.233.172
Race date = Sunday 22-07-2018
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Link (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=6051&st=0&p=50642&#entry50642)
Race length = 22 Laps (50 minutes)
Variant = 1967
60fps patch used   = 60fpsV2newmod
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qualifying time = 30-45 minutes

Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the Championship Standings Page  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=637&theme=6)

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works  / Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Privateer Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Practice server is up on IGOR.

The IP address is 109.180.233.172

We have had some trouble with IGOR recently. It is probably a good idea to practice connecting via the GPL multiplayer window using IP, just in case IGOR is down on race day.

As a consolation you still won the Privateers battle!  50 points for being the last privateer running  :clap:

Ops, Bastian only completed 4 laps so not 50% distance.  Fixed now, sorry Bastian.

So all the Privateers had gone within 4 laps. I did the same thing as Fran & hit Escape instead of Shift R. That's two consecutive races with an early bath.

Congrats Tristan, Fulvio, and John!

I wish I hadn't missed this one. 3 years of sleep deprivation has me feeling miserable most of the time so I haven't been able to enjoy much lately. Had I been thinking better I could have started in the BRM just to get some tokens.

Where did the privateers wreck? Coming off the banking into the infield is in my opinion one of the most difficult turns in GPL. I've never been able to do it consistently well in the GTs.

Take care guys, I hope I'm back soon.

Sorry to hear that Greg.

As for me, considerably more trivial medical drama prevented me from competing last night. Instead of slicing the onion I was aiming at, the knife somehow opened up my thumb... that was on Saturday, and it's still bleeding today... I have track day at Donington next Monday so I'm hoping it has healed by then...

Well I went through every emotion in that one.. Managed to top qualifying for a while and feeling quite smug until Trist joined and blew my time out of the water by almost a full second.

So to the grid. WTF is this.. I had done so many practice starts on the pits side of the oval, set my 1st gear to minimize wheel spin on the camber off the line. Now I find myself on the back straight. And it got worse, I couldn't see any starter. (Found out looking at the replay he was off to the right but out of my field of view). :( So I had to wait for Trist to go and by the time we hit the banking for the 1st time I think I was in 6th.

Flustered and wondering what else I wasn't aware of I managed to grab a place back but as we entered the banking near the end of lap 1 I lost the rear. (Must have made Dean who was following close behind jump) Corrected, ran wide and caught my rear on one of the cones flicking me into the wall. So waited for the expected impact from the following group, nothing came so spun around and rejoined last. Spitting feathers set off after Francesco and Billy.  Caught Francesco coming off the banking but was caught out by the slipstream and again hit the wall trying to avoid running into the back of him. It didn't seem to slow my progress much though and the car still felt fine, drove around the outside of him into T1 and we exited the corner side by side and it was a drag down to T2 behind Billy. I braked for the turn, Billy braked for the turn and Fran didn't. :( both cars sent spinning across the track and I somehow came through unscathed and set off after Andreas. Caught Andreas at the end of lap 2 and it was an easy task to use the Eagle power to pass into T1 and set off after Bob and Clive. Caught both entering the banking and was able to outdrag both down towards T1. At this point I was surprised to find Prib was telling me I was in P4 and noticed Both Bastian and Cookie had disappeared so I was now chasing Deans Ferrari, but several hundered yds adrift.

Oh so Slowly began to make ground and I began to think what I was to do should I catch him. Fortunately (For me) he took any decisions out of my hands by running wide into T2 and I was through. I could see Fulvio way off in the distance ahead but we were less than half distance to I figured Eagle verses Repco, no problem. As it was it took until lap 19 before I was finally within striking distance. The Logical Angel on my right shoulder was saying follow closely and use the Eagle's power to pass him on banking the final lap. The racing Angel on my left shoulder said "Go for it". (Should have listened to my "Logical Angel"). Went for a pass into T1, Arrived a lot more quickly than I expected and lost the rear trying to tighten my line for a late apex for the run down to T2 and ended up on the grass. I'm sure I heard Fulvio laughing as he retook the position and disappeared off into the distance.

So the last 2 laps were a bit of an anti climax, Set off after Fulvio again with no hope of catching him unless he made a monumental mistake. (Which of course he didn't). So 3rd. I would have biiten someone's arm off if offered that before the race but kinda disappointed to have had 2nd staring me in the face only to blow the opportunity through my own ambition outweighing Talent. Shame only 12 on the grid. I really like this track, I love T1 and hate the final turn onto the banking in equal measure, I don't think I got that one right once. :(.

Thanks for the race guys, loved it as always.

TTFN
John.
