Post by: Simon Gymer on April 28, 2006, 02:00:35 PM +0100
Endurance Special - Race of Champions at Silverstone

Date: Sunday 14th May

Practice 1: 8:00pm (20 mins)
Practice 2: 8:20pm (10 mins)
Qual 2: 8:30pm (30 mins)
Warmup: 9:00pm (2 mins)
Race: 9:02pm (60 mins) - MANDATORY PIT STOP - This means you must make at least one pit stop during the 60 minutes (and none of that Schumacher nonsense of crossing the line in the pits at the end  ;) :P)

Cars allowed: Any except G3 and Seat Toledo.
Weather: Dry
Track: Silverstone - TRACK DOWNLOAD HERE (http://www.tyfdesk.com/simracing/gtr_tracks/UKGTR_Silverstone_Track_1.0.zip)
Track Installation Instructions: Use GTR Manager or Mod Manager to install the zip file. If you don't use either of those then post reply and we can provide manual installation instructions.

Server: UKGTR - ROC
Password: Available in the Password Board (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?board=20.0) for those eligible to enter the Race of Champions.

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the UKGTR Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7)
(3) The race will be run using a UKGTR carpack which will need to be installed prior to racing. Details of this pack can be found here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1235.msg17247#msg17247).

This will be the Race of Champions special for drivers finishing 4th (or possibly 5th) or better in UKGTR Endurance Season 1 (GT and NGT in both divisions) and 2, and Sprint NGT and GT Season 1 and 2, and for at least two drivers from each winning team from the above competitions.

Would be good if people could try this track before hand to find out if we have any issues with it.

Thanks.

For reference, the principle qualifiers are those who finished top 4 in UKGTR Season 1 and 2 Sprint and Endurance, all divisions; reserves are those who finished 5th, but assuming that we're on the new server (which looks likely) they will also qualify to race.

The only exception is Leuven who finished 5th in NGT Sprint Season 2 but gets an automatic upgrade on behalf of CBFR to ensure that all winning teams have at least two representatives.

Principle qualifiers:

CeeJay
D Boyd
Dave Gymer
Don
fozzmeister
ginsters sponsored
greg130
Jamera
JonM_uk
Krueger
Mark Harrison
Matjaz Plotajs
Mike Wrightson
mo
Nakano_56
popabawa
Rich_A
Shark
Truetom
Zacari
[ZiP]Tyf
LEUVEN

5th place reserves:

Aagramn
aajay_uk
Bernie Lomax
Blaz
locutos ukgtr
Mark Jonzo
silver53

Teams:

CBFR
dE Racing
GTN Drivers Club
Kerb Crawlers
NGT Legends
Ze insane Penguins

If any team in the above list cannot field two drivers from the above lists, please PM me with 1 or 2 nominated replacements, the only requirement is that nominated drivers must have completed at least one UKGTR championship race (Season 3 races do count).

Are people going to stick with the class of car (GT/NGT) they 'qualified' for this race in?

I'm just wondering if we'll get an even GT/NGT split ???

I'll be in my GT3 (surprise!) :P

I was thinking of taking a GT, as I qualify from more than one championship I guess I get free call?

Are people going to stick with the class of car (GT/NGT) they 'qualified' for this race in?

It'll be free choice. I know a lot of people have switched from GT to NGT after championship wins in GT so I didn't want to drag people back to cars they're no longer happy in.

Personally I'm torn between the Vertislow (because it's Belgian ;D ), Corvette (because I loves it  ), and one of the Team Shark skinned cars (because they look nice 8) ).

What exactly is considered to be a pit stop. Can I just stop and say the team they don't need to change tyres and fuel and drive on?  Also 2 drivers that used to drive for dE Racing now drive for RSC Motorsports. I think it's a great idea to have such a race so I'll be there for sure and may I say I love the track.  :)

I tried out Silverstone last night online (on my own :helpsmilie:), fantastic to drive on, the corners before Hanger Straight are awesome (Becketts etc is it?)

We have Silverstone running on the old server if you want to try it online.

What exactly is considered to be a pit stop. Can I just stop and say the team they don't need to change tyres and fuel and drive on?

The only requirement is that you come to a complete stop in your pit box. I don't want to start issuing minimum times and we've no way to check for what work is carried out.

Also 2 drivers that used to drive for dE Racing now drive for RSC Motorsports. I think it's a great idea to have such a race so I'll be there for sure and may I say I love the track.  :)

Team points will go to whoever they're signed up with in LM2 but if that's going to be "wrong" there are ways we can work around it. Ultimately it's up to those drivers which team they represent.

Doesn't GTR-LS do that? (I might have that wrong...)

I know TPG have a 'live view' of their server.

I remember driving on this track in Comet summer league last year and we had some troubles with length of the race. Let's say we set 30 minutes of racing and in the race we only got 17 or so. Did anyone tested this one to make sure it works OK?

I've just beem working on my race set-up and noticed the fuel calculation is all wrong, in the GT3 it's saying 100l = 24 laps / 42 min which is clearly wrong.

I'm just wondering if this means the laps are screwed up, i.e. are we confident the race will last the correct length?  :o

Title: Re: GTR Endurance Special - ROC - 14th May
Post by: Rich_A on May 13, 2006, 01:44:11 PM +0100
I always do fuel consumption manually by using the number 2 MoTeC display. Work out fuel per lap and then can work out how much is needed from average lap time. Also this line is useful on 1 ..

Race Stint Offset="1" // Offset each scheduled pitstop in case you want to carry extra fuel

Means if you set 125L total for race that's all you'll get rather than 125L + whatever is left after first stint!!

yep same here in the F550, it says 50l=8 laps but it actually gives 17.
Apart from that the track looks great.... see you later,
Mo.

I've noticed the fuel consumption estimates are way off too but Shark and I have done both offline and online events and the event should go to a full hour.

Maybe it's caused by this in the tracks gdb file:

RaceLaps = 115
  Attrition = 14
  TrackName = GREAT BRITAIN, SILVERSTONE

I've noticed Le Mans addon track and some others had problems with this as well (Nordscheife before last version) :-\

Yes, I did a multiplayer test with my local server and one player connected (using AI control  :D), left it running around on it's own and lights worked fine and it got to 60 minutes with no problem.

We just have to remember to do manual calculation on the fuel by seeing how much you consume in practice / qual rather than relying on garage estimates.

If someone doesnt turn up is it possible for me to take their place if the reserves dont turn up (long shot I know!)?  If there is any spare places going i would love to race. No harm in asking  ;)

Cheers, Fly  :)

So far nobody has actually PMd me to say they can't make it and arrange a replacement, as described in this post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1512.msg22579#msg22579). Sometimes I wonder why I bother. ::) :P

You're Mr Angry? Think how I feel... I drive hard for 20 or so minutes keeping Popabawa behind, spin on worn tyres, come in for my scheduled stop... and having wasted some 15 seconds with the awkward crew instruction sheet the bleedin' AI driver takes over! WTF?! Tried to find the right key to get it back but to no avail, so I retired.

I can only assume that whilst trying to tell them not to put fuel in I accidently bumped the driver selection at the top but I was shocked that AI drivers were even available!

Gah!

At least that was absolutely, definitely, positively my last GTR race ever.

>:(

I was enjoying that as well, great stuff FlyBri, until I tried to pit. Got a stop/go, strange I thought didn't seem to do anything wrong, so went in for stop/go, very carefully this time, only to get another stop/go. Must have been getting it wrong  :helpsmilie: but twice is enough.

Think the event was a good idea, on a real good track and I enjoyed it immensely. The low turnout disappointed me. It deserved better.

Yur it's definitely not worth the hassle racing addon tracks, always little bugs here and there make it impossible.

Tbh single events will never be taken too seriously, season are where it's at.

I don't recomend using addon tracks for ES3 unless you can be sure they work 100%.  ::)

Unbelievable, one lap to go and my DFP stops working, straight into barrier, end of race, bugger.

Apart from that good fun as always.

Just unplugged the wheel and plugged it back in, fine now, damn computer.

I thought the track was great and suffered no bugs or weirdness (other than Tyf ;) ;D )

Really enjoyed the practise and qualy sesh's trading times with the usual suspects.

Race was a different matter, hadnt had any time to try out a race setup so used a tweaked qual setup and it was just too hard for race and full fuel. Had a good first 10 laps chasing Pops and Dave G but then fell back a little.
Double dropped a gear thru Becketts, span at high speed and lost about 15 secs otherwise could have carried on pressuring Pops in the race :(
My race was really boring due to the low turnout and no-one near me to race, and i was tempted to quit a few times but perservered in case someone up front droppped a clanger, but they never :(
Brought it home about 11 secs behind Pops.

Well done TT for pretty much dominating the few NGT's here.
This track would be great with a full grid.

Title: Re: GTR Endurance Special - ROC - 14th May
Post by: Simon Gymer on May 14, 2006, 10:23:25 PM +0100
Silverstone worked fine other than the fuel consumption being wrong. As long as we test the tracks first there's nothing wrong with addon tracks. The addon cars cause more problems than addon tracks if they're not done right. It's a nice change to race somewhere else as the other tracks are getting a bit old now. Laguna last week was good, although again a very hard track.

Can't say I particularly enjoyed this race. I picked the wrong car. I like the Morgan and in off-line practice I had done 1:49.4 compared to 1:49.0 in the F360, so I thought that was ok and not too slow in comparison. This is true, however, the Morgan is sooooo stiff and can't cope with bumps at all. When i took out the F360 in practice I thought wow you can barely feel the bumps in comparison to the Morgan. Being the hardy individual I am I went for the Morgan anyway as this was a one off special thought I'd spice up the grid a bit with the boat. Pace wise the Morgan was fine but keeping hold of the thing over the bumps was an absolute trial every lap, you guys in the F360 and 911 had it soo easy over the bumps. My hands hurt like hell now after hanging on so tight.

Span about 3 or 4 times so was very suprised to get 2nd only 10 secs behind TT.

Shame about the turnout, the rest of the champions obviously too scared to turn out and prove their worth.  :P ;)

Well done Zacari and TT on the wins.

I'll check the server to see if it has AI control ticked but it shouldn't have.

I'm feeling quite lucky I only had my own incompetance to deal with, sorry to hear about your problems guys :(

I thought I'd got fairly quick at this track until Trutom and Shark blew the rest of the NGT's away in qually. Some nice work by my fellow Legends, I think we all got PB's in qually.

Still, it looked close between Dave, Mark, Don & I for 3rd. Mark was all over me for the first few laps but he couldn't quite make the pass, then he dropped back a few seconds, presumably a mistake, bummer for you but I was pretty pleased ;)

Manged to keep the gap down with Dave to under a second, I was very consistent for the first 20 mins then just as I was getting on terms, Dave span leaving me in 3rd quite a way behind Shark. About 10 mins later there was old Sharky by the side of the track and I was just able to nick past before he rejoined ;D Shark pitted in so I decided to go another few laps. I'd decided no tyres and no fuel and see if I could make the tyres last.

Then my incompetance took over. I pitted in, got the limiter on absolutely perfectly and headed for my pit box which was the one nearest the entrance and decided to clip the wall spinning me round (like a record baby, right round) 1800. Of course, then I paniced and lost about 20sec turning round and altering the pit board only to then rejoin 5 sec behind Shark.

AAAARRRGHHH!  :cursing: :censored:

My tyres were pretty shot by then so after a few laps trying to make a dent in Sharks lead I gave up and decide to just protect my 3rd place, It was the Race of Champions after all  ;D

Congrats to Truetom, amazing pace there  :thumbup1:

Disappointing turnout though :(

Nice one Dave, It was much appreciated m8  :)

I enjoyed race, never run track till about 10mins to go in practice. Managed a 1.46.1 in qualifying, got me 7th. Pleased with race, but made a mess of my pit stop due to not remembering my 'engine cut' button lol, and only made a couple of minor errors in race. Race pace was good and managed to put in a 1.43,7  ;D Had a great battle racing with SBG for first half of race until he had his stop/go woes, unlucky m8. We were pretty much equal in lap times, good stuff  :)

Ok well cool but I don't think that fuel bug is good for ES3.. unless it can be fixed, new track version put on FTP for download ect.

Laguna is great, did anyone try that Lemans v3.3 from Hepto site? Lemans is ace, luv the long straights - would be great track for ES3.

Gutted, knackered and sweating and those 3 in random order for now ;).

Add on tracks are great, period. :)

Took the C5R out for a spin, since I'm most likely going to use that in the next season. Never got to grips with Silvy last time I tried it, so took it quite easy in praccy and qualy. Noticed I was just in front of the quickest NGTs when I finally managed a complete lap without spinning :D.
Had a blast of a race right from the start. Trying to stay close to Jam who was a tad faster in his F550. He made a mistake, I passed him, then I made a mistake and he was right on my tale again. Knowing he was faster I let him past at the end of the longest straight (hangar?). Thought I'd scare him a bit by staying next to him up to the next sharp left hander and then really let him go :). That was dumb, lol. Outbraked myself and ran wide, hehe! Drove like a maniac after that and even ignored the 'tyres worn, tyres worn' numptydumptyness of my race engineer (mental note: Fire ze n00b & hire some dumb goodlooking blonde chick; prolly more useful ;D  :tt1: ).
Pitted with 22 mins to go and when I was back on track I was about 3 secs on front of Jam again! W00h00! ;)
Took it nice and steady and managed to keep the gap open, until I made a mistake and spun, Jam past again... Only to be going up in black smoke 1 corner after ???
'Knowing' the gods were smiling on me now I thought, ok, let's cruise to the end and cap a nice 7th place in the Race of Champions! :D
N00b-me can't 'just cruise' (never like Will Smith ;) :D :P) and so I spun again, hitting the armcove and 'removing' my front splitter and some suspension 'attributes'... Race was almost finished and I was hoping to get at least an 8th or 9th place by continuing to drive, hehe. No suck luck though, so 11th I think, else 10th, lol! (Even got a stop 'n' go! LOL!)

Good race though & I hope every race in the next season is an addon track (if tested and found 'non-quilty' :)). Pwetty bored with the default ones myself tbh and it's also nice to race on tracks that are being used in MotoGP, F1 and other motorsports, like China, Bahrain, Mugello, etc. :D

Grats to winners and on to the next! :D

Congrats to Zacari and Truetom - the champions O0

I had a great battle with Zacari, we were split by hundreths of a second in qual and the race was no different.
I drove as hard as I could just to keep in touch - superb driving Zacari and even though I was just about able to follow there was not much chance I 'd pass you.
Really enjoyed trying to pressure you though ;D

But then I somehow lost 10secs to Zacari during the pit stop(my achilles heel in enduro races) , and came out in 3rd behind Kreuger who made a great stop, and thats where we finished. At one stage I thought I would be able to challenge but had burned my tyres catching up and in the end went off at the chicane before Bridge.
I rejoined and took it easy to cross the line for 3rd and some doughnuts with Zacari and Kreuger :D

One of my most enjoyeable races for sure, so roll on some more addon tracks I say  :-*
btw did I mention that Elkhart Lake is a great track ;)

Made only a few laps yesterday here and made 1.51.xx. Then saw on the GTRank that the record was 1.47.xx. Didn't have time to train today as I had to work on my wifes (  ;D ) garden. Just had some time before the race but couldn't make it under 1.50. Joined server and decided to make some desperate damper settings which proved to be the right ones. 1.49.4xx in quali, just after Shark and 1.49.9xx in a race.  :)

Race was quite boring, tbh.  :-\    From the begining I was trying to follow Shark who slooooowly (0.1 sec per lap  ;D ) pulled away, but span and then couldn't quite follow. My tyres were a bit hot 110/105 so I had to hold back a bit to preserve them. Also made some minor mistakes exactly 'cause nothing was happening and was (almost) daydreaming. I pitted at half the race w/o any pit problems and had 15 sec lead. I presumed it was Shark and I let it slowly and steady fall down to 10 seconds lead. Then Zacari and Krueger came, dueling for 1 st place and in letting them pass I lost full 5 seconds. Had to step up a bit in pace to make it first.

SHAME on all "champions" who didn't join and had no reason for it.   :nono:

Great event, I was honored to participate.  :euro:

Wasn't gonna race until the last minute. But was glad I did in the end. Not for the close racing but for the track, the longer the race went on the more I found myself enjoying it. Finished 4th which I think was right, all the guys in front were faster so I was happy ;D
Special Grats go to Zacari who now seems unstopable and of course to TT who won a race and made a pitstop, nice work ze TT ;) Grats to the Champions of champions 8) 8) 8)

...the longer the race went on the more I found myself enjoying it...

I had the same m8. I think Silvy has a sort of flow to it, that u need to get into, then it's a great track! :D

Btw did I mention that I made the car spin over the s/f line when counter was on 0.00.00 and race was finished but I needed to do 1 more lap, rofl! :P ;D Check replay for a laugh, haha! Limping (inside joke for JonM here ;)) last lap to pit was quite entertaining, rofl!

T

P.S. First time ur getting an 'unstoppable' JonM... in UT2k4 take a screenie m8, else I won't believe ye ;)

That was a blast, for so few turning up I was really glad of a good battle at the front!

Qualifying was very close- Mo put in a cracking 1:41.8 and I managed to edge infront by about 0.02 sec which I was very happy with!  Couldn't believe how much faster you were through the first sector, a good 0.4s and it kept me very honest in the race as well.

The race was very similar to quali, first 18 laps to my first stop I lead by no more than 2 sec, and had mo right behind me as I pitted.  Took it fairly easy into the pits but crew did a good job, about 41 sec.  Came out 5th which didn't bother me, but had to push like hell to stay infront of Mo who pitted on the next lap.  Then (I thought) it was a case of keeping my position and waiting for everyone to pit... how wrong that was!  Lap 25 ish I was still in 2nd, 15 secs behind someone who I thought hadn't pitted yet... didn't catch Krueger until lap 30-ish and managed to get past into Club.  Cracking job to do the race on one set of tyers, I had to check the replay to convince myself you'd stopped! :o 8)

There were one or two bugs that were a bit odd, the fuel bug being one of them.  Around lap 10 the 'next corner' markers disappeared, (for me at least, not the 200/150/100 ones but the one that flashes up below the virtual mirror to say what the next corner is).  I don't use them but never turn them off, and I noticed when they weren't there!  The one that puzzled me the most however was the race distance, which shouldn't have been 37 laps atall.  Races are supposed to be 1 hour or (500/3)Km long, and the distance limit was reached at 33 laps which should  have been how long the race was.

Still a very enjoyable (and tiring!) race, hope there's a few more of 'em even though there wasn't that great a turnout.  Backmarkers as usual did a bang-up job of being predictable and curteous :) and grats to TT for the NGT win, and managing to avoid Krue and myself into Club ;) :D

I agree, let's take the result from lap 33! :D ;) :P Do believe I was in 7th place then, haha! ;) :D

Decided to take the team car out for a spin and took the F575 this time.

Joined in pretty late and took an old Barcelona setup which i slightly modified during qualifying session and car felt pretty good for a race , but the gap for the 2 front runners was quite big and tried to even out things with diferent strategy.   Mandatory pit didnt really suite this car for such a  short race , but i thought anyway that i'll try with 100 liters of fuel and same tires , so i only selected 'no change' for tires on pitboard.

Pitstop took only 5 seconds and i had about 18 seconds lead when i got back in the track , but the next few laps told me that without a big mistake from the car behind me , he would catch me easily before time runs out. Car turned out to be Zacari and after a short struggle , i gave it away in club corner while i was trying to defend my position , locked the brakes and slided across the track , i was really worried that i collect one of the NGT's with me , but from the replay it seems like there were enough room for all of us afterall.  Sorry about the heartbeats thou , car was a bit difficult to drive at that point allready  , but at the heat of the moment i forgot how difficult .

Congratulations !!! Good solid run from Zacari , at the end i didnt have anything to say and last 2 laps was merely surviving from my point of view , maybe i should have changed tires after all  , but it's easy to say afterwards , was a fun challenge to try it this way anyhow and 2nd place is ok result  , for a moment i thought i gonna loose that too  ;D.

Grts to TT too and ofcourse all the others who showed up , thx for the race and hope to cya all soon in track again.

Ok well cool but I don't think that fuel bug is good for ES3.. unless it can be fixed

The fuel estimations being wrong is hardly a showstopper, they're not that accurate at a lot of the standard issue tracks! ::)

did anyone try that Lemans v3.3 from Hepto site? Lemans is ace, luv the long straights - would be great track for ES3.

I tried to but the first part didn't download properly. Will try again at some point but why do these buggers insist on packaging them as executables?! ???

ps. It's "UE3" in standard nomenclature, not "ES3". U for UKGTR, E for Endurance, 3 for Season 3.

I tried for days to download it but gave up in the end. Maybe it's better to get hold of now but if I have to spend that much effort downloading it it sucks.

LeMans is rubbish for league racing too, you will never see anyone and most of the lap is falling asleep on the straights. It's great for a special event (which we will run round the real LeMans weekend), but not for good racing and definately not for a championship event.

That explains that one then. I thought I would be miles behind you and TrueTom as you were only 10 seconds or so behind before I had my first spin. I almost quit after my pit stop as I was so far behind, but thought **** it and carried on through the pain barrier. After spinning another 2 or 3 times getting a 2nd place felt very undeserved.

Think I span in front of 2 GT cars too, very sorry about that. Probably thought it was the pressure of being lapped, I wish it was, but I just couldn't hold the Morgan over the bumps most laps, it was like trying to sit on a bucking bronco.

Ouch.

Have to say in all the versions I've tried, rFactor, GTR and GTL I've failed to see any real differences, they're all pretty much conversions of each other so don't know what this v3.3 has got that the others don't.

It's impossible!

Just delete the track if it already exists and install the one that is located in a link for the race then we all run from the same one.

It's too long a story to put on here but using an ancient magic book of spells we do have the export files for the ROC. Couple that with the replay file from my client PC we have a complete set of what we need so this should be declared the official one and Gizmo will be very pleased he doesnt have to drive GTR again.

I'll cobble the export and replay together tonight and upload to the usual place.
