Grid/server capacity: 14

Track: Goodwood GP Circuit Download this (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg187122#post_goodwood)

Cars allowed: 3 No. Aston Martin DB4's, 1 No. Chevrolet Corvette, 7 No. Ferrari 250 GTO's, 3 No. Jaguar E-Type's.

Cars not allocated:1

Practice: ~18:00 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 19:00 (30 mins)
Race: 19:30 (100 laps)

All times are GMT

Time of Day Setting: 15:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: x2

Server: simracing.org.uk XMAS
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Note early start time.

Car Choice

Each car has been assigned a random number (01-99) which will not change and is known only to myself.

Beginning at 14:00 (GMT) on Sunday, November 4th, drivers wishing to take part, will send me a pm containing one number (01-99). Pm's received will be dealt with on a strict, first come, first served, basis. Pm's received before 14:00 (GMT) on November 4th will be ignored.

On receipt of your number, I will assign you a car. This car will be the one that's unique number is closest to your submitted number. If two cars are closest to your submitted number, you will be offered a choice.

If the driver is happy  :thumbup2: with the car allocated to him they will confirm this by pm and their details will be locked into the Car Roster. Drivers who have chosen their car will receive links to the Car Roster and to the Car set download. They will then be able to see what cars other drivers have chosen.

If the driver is unhappy   with the car allocated to him they will confirm this by pm and submit a new number.

Drivers must inform me, as soon as possible, of their decision whether to keep their allocated car or to choose again.

This process will repeat until Thirteen cars have been allocated or we reach December 29th (whichever occurs soonest).

Drivers should be aware that as time passes, the cars available to them will decrease, due to other drivers accepting their allocation.

I will take my choice from any un-allocated car(s)

Pit lane speed limit is 40mph (64kph)

Pit stop advice is here https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11812.msg212761#msg212761

I would suggest being at pit lane speed before turning off the track to pit and keeping the limiter on until back on the track at pit lane exit. We don't want any S/G penalty's.

Tony I am trying to get myself organised ( my wife has been trying for 45 yrs, so I don't hold out much hope!!)

For the Xmas Special you suggest that we download a zip file and install on a virgin GTL ? But also say that it is NOT necessary  ???
and I notice that the "read me" refers to changing some of the car parameters?

Am I to assume, that the cars that I currently have installed on my "general use GTL" install will work in the Goodwood race, but that there might be some differences in performance or fuel capacity applied by the server? Therefore if I find the time, and want to have some meaningful practice with no surprises on race night, I should create the fresh install and insert the zip file contents to be sure I am practising with the actual cars that we will be using??

The cars you currently have in your existing GTL install will not work at Goodwood. The server will throw out a message "Car not found" and boot you. The cars supplied in the download have been modified, mainly to provide all cars with similar pit stop options.

Installing into a copy of your GTL install can help in identifying problems if they occur. But the download should work ok in an existing GTL install too. The Christmas special cars will co-exist with your existing cars as they install with their own unique folders.

Aha, so any advantage I thought I might have with my car regarding fuel tank capacity has probably been removed  :-\

For a moment there I was dreaming of stretching stints and avoiding at least one of those race destroying pitstops.  :'(  I should have known that Tony would be shrewd enough to even things up  ;)

Yes but delete the reference to the LMCS in the SIM_GTC.gdb file or you will get miss match messages.

Well, I figured out the cause of the dizziness. It's the seat I'm using now. A couple of weeks ago I fell through the one I had been using for ages (too bad there's no video of that, it was hilarious) and I just grabbed another one without giving it any thought. But I finally noticed that my position just isn't right and I checked and it turns out the other seat is almost 10cm (4") higher than the old one. My old brain can't seem to adjust to that and it's not really optimal anyway to look down instead of straight. So I got to find a seat with approximately the same height of the seat as before. That shouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that everything is closed next week. So it's unlikely I'll be able to participate in this race yet. If so, feel free to reassign the car I got alloted when needed.

Hi Tony, Merry Christmas,
I just noticed that of the two cars left one is the Aston Martin. Probably not tje car to win this Xmas special but a historically interesting one. As we have 7 GTOs on the grid and only one Aston MartinI'd glady swap my GTO for the Aston for variety's sake.

Please let me know if you like the idea.

Enjoy your Christmas, Cheers, Dan

As I had previously stated that car swopping would not be allowed I don't think that I can allow this, however well intentioned the offer is.

But thank you for the offer.

IMPORTANT

For the attention of Dominick only

We have discovered a small glitch with your cars rev counter. I know it may be doubtful if your taking part or not, but if you are, you need to make this change to your car files.

In GameData/Teams/GTC-65/Ferrari/4219a replace the .CAR file with this

http://www.mediafire.com/file/h44kmzzzsgj537j/4219a_SIM_GTC_Ferrari.CAR/file

NOTE: Only Dominick's car needs this fix. All the other Ferrari's have been tested and are fine.

PS I have also pm'd Dominick with this message.

I hope everyone has been practicing their pit stops and have their car setups honed for top performance.

Just to say it's a long race and I do not wish to witness any silliness at lap 1, Turn 1  :nono:

Please all enjoy, as we do not get the chance to hold these type of races very often.

Good luck all or GLA as we like to say

Arnold claims that he has finely tuned my chariot, so that by utilising the latent tension in Mabel's knicker elastic, my car can be propelled  from the start grid at sufficient velocity to reach the chequered flag without any pitstops. ;D

I should point out that there is historical evidence to indicate that Arnold can talk absolute bo**ocks when he has had alcohol .......and over the Christmas period Arnold and Mabel have consumed dangerous amounts of intoxicating liquids. So, I might be making at least one precautionary stop for fuel and tyres.  ::)

Anyway, even outside of the dizziness issue I didn't feel up to it tonight. December with its stale, cold air is always a poor month for me.
But thanks for the information and effort of course. I hope it was a great conclusion of the SROUK GTL year. I'm bound to watch the replay.

After my long layoff from GTL that race was a complete disaster for me. My keyboard and as I discovered after the race, my mouse was only communicating intermittently with my PC. Hence when I stopped for fuel up I was not getting any. And things I thought I had cancelled (like a total body refurbishment, happened). It took me about half a dozen stops to realise this. Finally my pit crew refused point blank to refuel me (it must have been something I said)  :cursing: so I went out for a lap but ran out of fuel. I had done very little practice, only set the car up really. I felt very rusty. I must practice more before I race again.

I am wondering if when I loaded the setup it didn’t load. I just assumed it had when I clicked on it. The car seemed to be much more difficult to control than I had expected when I pushed. I spent as much time in the pits and on the grass as I did on the tarmac. With the pitting problems I must admit my concentration waned and so did my enthusiasm.  :surrender: I decided to use the race as practice. I tried the sand out and a couple of tyre barriers to rack up a few more varieties of off’s.   I have given the desktop receiver a wash and dusting and hope that does the trick.

I am not sure if my G27 has reverted to its old brake problem or not. I may have to employ the electrical contact cleaner again.  :detective:

Congratulations to all those who finished and those who put in quick laps and of course the winner and podiums.

A Happy New Year to all  :balloon:

Huge thanks to Tony for organising such an interesting event...that was fun ( I think!! ::) )

Grats to Geoffers, Erling and Matt on the podium places and to all those who survived to the finish.

At least I managed to perform my pitstops without any issues, or SnG penalties  ;D ;D, that was a first for me.
My cunning plan to only take 3 stops and only one change of tyres proved to be a total disaster in terms of overall race pace.  :-\ :-\

I knew that I could run at 1:23 pace if I used full revs and only extracted 22 laps per tankful, but that would mean 4 stops with a splash and go towards the end. But any excuse to avoid pitstops  was far too attractive, so I worked out that 25 laps was possible on a tankful if I was very careful. Then I would gain a HUGE amount of time by avoiding a whole stop wouldn't I???

In reality Geoffers and Erling were running at such a pace that they more than negated any advantage I might have gained. Added to that several mistakes on my part lost me the time I might have saved on a 3 stop strategy  :-\

I feel I must apologise to Bob for rear ending his E type at the chicane in the early laps, I am feeling very guilty that he rolled in in last place and that the impact might have compromised his car. Bob is usually someone who is very cunning and quick and I fully expected him to be further up the field.

Thanks again to Tony for organising....can we have some more like this please?

Result (https://www.avonrise.co.uk/srou/kurts/GoodwoodXmas_29122018)

8)

Desperately looking for a setup to bring my laptime under 1:24.5. Just before start of quali I found one
online and had my first and only lap with 1:23.9 which eventually made me very content.

Of course I could not match that time during race. First part was ok apart from an off in lap one.
After my first pitstop after lap 22 (only fuel, no tyres and no repair - which was a bad decision) I completely lost my rhythm  >:(
Due to some offs and lousy tyres I had to make my second pitstop around lap 33 and dropped to the end of the field.
During the rest of the race I felt more and more unfocused and tired  :P  and after some more offs, pitstops, more damages and a s&g
penalty I decided to retire after lap 78.

Thanks Tony for organizing this great event and all the past and forthcoming events.

Happy new year to you all. CU next week.  :)

Many thanks to Tony for organising this, long time since I have done such a long race.

Had done some practice for this about a week ago on full tanks with no problems, but in qually with low fuel I kept losing the rear on corner entry so had to add more coast diff & put brake bias more to the front. Needed a stable setup for such a long race.

Race plan was to do 22 lap stints & only change tyres at the second stop & hope & pray that the tyre drop off wasn't too dire. Got a good start but didn't want to mess up at T1 so let Ziu have the corner, followed him for a few laps & noticed he kept getting the chicane wrong, then about the 4th lap he clipped it & spun. Now in front, I had Dan & Erling close behind & a few laps later I ran a bit wide out of St Mary's & let them both past. Took many laps to catch back up with Dan who waved me past to chase Erling, who I just caught as he peeled off for the pits.

Fuel consumption was such that I got to lap 23 before pitting & came back out with quite a healthy lead, not sure how big though as one of those GTL glitches was showing Erling as DNF from the start. But as I could not see Erling behind I guessed he must have changed tyres at his stop so would probably be quicker than me for the next 20+ laps. Second stint went well until near the end when I caught Rog coming down to Woodcote, wasn't sure if he was letting me past or not but we collided at the first apex & both spun. Sorry Rog, I should have been a bit more careful :cursing:.

Rejoining, Erling was now in sight behind, but with only a couple more laps to the pitstop I held the lead. Second stop went OK with a tyre change this time & I rejoined just a few seconds ahead. I could judge my lead each lap at the chicane & it seemed to be increasing bit by bit. Erling again stopped earlier than me at the third stop & again changed tyres I guess as I lapped him as he came out of the pits. Next lap though I clipped the chicane entrance on the right & spun, fortunately not hitting anything & not losing too much time & as I had lost speed decided to pit. Just fuel again & away still ahead.

Last part of the race was uneventful, only concerns were would the tyres hold out & how far was I in front. Last splash & dash went well & with no sign of Erling in my mirrors I could afford to not push too hard over the last 10 laps. So in the end I came home just 7s ahead after nearly two & a half hours racing, phew!  :sweatdrop:

Congrats to Erling & Matt on the podium & well done to all who made the finish.

Happy New Year to all & cya all on Wednesday for the start of Season 19.  :thumbup2:

Big thanks to Tony for organizing this marathon - had a very tired brake foot when we finished last night  :)

Once again I qualified just 0.1 sec ahead of Dan, only to be completely demolished at the start.  Dan, have to ask; how do you get off the line so fast ?  I drop my clutch pedal the moment we get the 'go' signal, but before my car even starts to move, you've shot 2 meters ahead  :o  If it can be done so much faster, I must be doing something very wrong.  Followed the lead group, and as Geoffers mentioned, Ziu clipped the barrier in the chicane and spun, letting our Ferrari trio past.  Geoffers first let Dan through to take the lead, and later had a moment at the chicane letting me through too.

Chased Dan for a couple of laps before he seemingly waved me through down the back straight.  Puzzled, as I could see no reason he should do that ?    Held the lead for the rest of the stint, but towards the end, Geoffers had caught up.  I was struggling with tyre wear, but regrettably for me, Geoffers seemed completely unperturbed by it.  Whether to change tyres or not in each pit stop had been my big dilemma. Given the above, I expected Geoffers not to change his, but still stuck to my original plan and changed mine in all but the last stop.  Had hoped to reel in Geoffers again, once his tyres went off, but while I closed the gap a little on some laps, it wasn't nearly enough.  How he could maintain his pace on tyres that had done a double stint is beyond me; he's either the king of driving the Ferrari on worn tyres, or he's the king of setting it up with minimal tyre wear, if that's possible.

Rest of the race went into a pattern:  I would drop a few places at each pit stop, as others went longer, only to find myself back in 2nd chasing Geoffers once everyone had done their stops.

Big grats to Geoffers on an other unbeatable performance, and to Matt - impressive pace in that E-Type!     Grats also to everyone who made it to the finish - given the length, there were remarkably few early retirees  :)

Happy New Year to all.

Regarding the tyre wear Erling. Not sure I'm a demon at driving quick on worn tyres or if my setup minimised tyre wear, but I didn't really find it too much of a problem. Goodwood is quite a high grip circuit & I guess masks the tyre wear issues & I never found it difficult to keep the car going where I wanted. The front left was the only tyre that seemed to take a lot of punishment & wear was nearly 30 on XD by the end after 54 laps on that set. What was noticeable was the drop off in lap time, although that was only 1 to 1.5s per lap towards the end.

To be honest I did not know if the one tyre change strategy would work, had not tried it when practicing, maybe on a different track it would not have worked.  ???

4th, I had been aiming for 3rd to be frank but then there was Matt, save as the bank of England over the distance of 100 laps not an inch of a tyre on the grass or a yard too late under braking it seemed. And also there was this optimistic plan of only changing the front tyres at stop one and do the next stops for fuel only. Didn't work out of cousrse and after a number of stupid offs and nearly offs I had to change fronts and rears in lap 75 after all. And there were some lapses in concentration which we probably all suffered from. I once tried to brake with the clutch pedal wondering why the car would't slow down when I shot into the fields. And, oh yes there were also the three degrees of racing fear: Ziu, Geoffers and Erling! Luckily I managed Erling to believe my starts are flawless so he politely joined  behind me,Ziu decided to clip the chicane and spin, thank you, and Geoffers had one of his inevitable  "ran a little wide" moments which threw me into first place, a position I am not used to and don't feel comfortable with. Fortunately it soon became clear that both Erling and Geoffers were faster on the lap so I waved them past to fight it out among themselves hoping to be able to cling on to third.......(If it hadn't been for...see beginning of my post)Now that I come to think of it, 4th isn't too bad at all !

Erling, there's no big secret in my starts What I do is: do the rythm of the countdown aloud (as you do in rally stage starts) which makes it easier to nail the "GO" and I always test start a car for the perfect rpm power and minmal wheelspin combo. If you outdrag me next race I know what you've been doing.....lol

Thanks again Tony for a wondeful event and thanks everybody for a great evening and finally hats off for Kurt who after a great qually time wouldn't give up for so many, many laps in his crippled Aston. well done mate

Dan

I did have a few grass moments, only one where I spun, I think.... a couple of going wide, but mostly stayed on the grey part.
Changed tyres at stop 2 and 3, on the thought that stop 4 would be a short race to the flag, so did change them at stop 3 to be safe
may not have need to, but I had a good gap behind, and had the time in hand. Stop 4 was 1/2 a tank of fuel, and then take it easy to the end.

Dan, your starts ARE flawless...  ;D

Anyway, thanks for the info.  I always (if I remember) practice starts the car I'm driving, although it's no guaranty I actually find the perfect rpm to use.  Hadn't thought to count the rhythm, and haven't dared to move until I get the 'go' message.  Outdragging you anytime soon seems very unlikely - I'll probably earn a S/G instead (a cunning plan of yours no doubt..  ;))

With regards to changing only the front tyres, there's no point in doing this, as it takes just as long as changing all 4, if I'm not mistaken.  Tested that a long time ago, but will try to verify it one of the coming days.

Geoffers, I had wear values of 10 on the left front after 22 laps, so sounds like you have MORE wear than me  :o   Earlier, I've found the GTO difficult with worn tyres, so for fear of going off, losing more time, I opted to change them.

Does anyone know what this is on my GTO ?   It's the only one of them that has it.  Hadn't noticed it at all in my first test session, but once I spotted it in the second one, it distracted the hell out of me, lol

I told Mabel that she should hide the remotely activated engine failure module UNDER the bonnet........no wonder that it failed to explode the mechanicals when i pressed the "nuke" button on lap 68........stupid woman!!  ::)

Although, upon consideration, the other 10 modules that Arnold successfully planted on the other cars also failed to operate, but at least they were not noticed.  :-\

My guess is a bug catcher. Used in races where lots of insects were expected, it helped in keeping the windscreen clear.

Lol guys, thanks for the suggestions  :)   I'm convinced it created drag and is the real reason I finished 7 secs behind Geoffers..  :whistling:

Have done some tests today and can confirm what I stated earlier:  There's no time saved by only changing tyres on one axle during a pit stop.  Tried changing only fronts, only rears, and all 4, and the stop took the same time in each case - ironically, the stop where I changed all 4 was marginally quicker than the other two, possibly because I didn't have to waste time deselecting one axle.

Happy New Year all.

Hi good fun more long races please, now the stupid bit practiced on wrong track and thought had only got to do one pit stop got quite a shock when found running out fuel so quick.

Grats to Geoffers on win

Grats to Podium

Thanks Tony for organizing all races

Happy New Year to all drivers
