Taken from Fabris review as a guideline to the different cars:-

By laptimes, Eagle first, and Lotus, are really faster. Brabham, Mclaren, Ferrari and Cooper seems quite even, with the Brabham leading a bit, but she is also more nervous to drive. BRM shoud be the slower. Honda unclassified, I can not see the RPMs; Matteo did some laps with similar times of BRM, but maybe he didn't focus too much with that car.
My favorite car is without any doubt the Cooper, a toy to drift here and there on the track.

So you faster guys should not take the better cars  :P

Not sure its had any updates since but might have.

Updated a few days ago.

I don't care about pace, I need a bulletproof gearbox  ;D

Mark, remember also the huge tires wear in BRM, when in other cars it is practically nil.

I will take, if possible, the Rindt's Cooper.

Practice server is up, there are 3 of each car there. Mark do you want to drop any of the cars?

not at this stage, i'm sure most will want to try all of them before the event. If a car proves generally un-used then we can drop that nearer race night.

Odd they didnt get the in-game L49 and F312 to work along with the pack rather than re-modding both.  :-\

Isn't that done for legal purposes? If they added the Kunos cars in the mod, people could have gotten those cars for free.

This was done intentionally. The mod team state they are trying to replicate the feel of the cars in GPL. The AC cars most certainly do not drive like their GPL counterparts.

I'll put a link somewhere in the UKGPL forums, I know some of them have AC and this might get some of the others off the fence.

You might consider dropping the matra and Lotus 33, as both should be massively outclassed anywhere that isn't a tight city track or the 'ring.
I'll still try and put laps in with each just for giggles, SHE has made it very clear that I must take the great white whale to victory in South Africa though.

I just did some laps, the track in this version seems a lot better in graphics and there are no troubles with strange barrier walls, like before had.

Will try to make some laps with the entire field before the end of the week. I will spend a couple of hours with pleasure tonight on the server. @ 9.10 PM (UK time) circa I'll be on the server.

See you  ;)

What would really help to get people upto speed and encourage more to join in, is if you veteran historic single seater racers put some good baseline setups together for all to use  :)

It's not quite that easy :P
This isn't GPL so us 'veteran' GPL'ers and whatnot are equally flailing  :D

I can stick my setups on Stracker as I go - but I only intend concentrating on the Honda, so the rest will be only the most basic improvements on the stock setup to give me an idea of pace/handling.

Physics are still physics  ;) Though there will be intricasies of difference between GPL and AC,  i would think (and hope) that the same setup principles apply to setting up a single seater race car of that period  :-\

Any reading bumph links about setting them up on the interweb ?

These move around nicely, feels great 4-wheel drifting through a corner  :)

Title: Re: UKAC - Kyalami Grand Prix Legends - Dec 5

I found a lot of information about the GPL cars here http://www.intothered.dk/simracing/cars.html (http://www.intothered.dk/simracing/cars.html)  Try the various links on this page.  However, some of the settings are different to AC and use different units.  I tried to recreate an AC setup based on the corresponding GPL setup and I couldn't even get the car to drive in a straight line  >:(
I've since had another go which I will test tonight, but I'm not confident.

Anyway it will be the fight with own car, not with opponents. Tryed some setup approach and not satisfied in every of that. It will be a wonder for me if i'll find a setup and will drive well stabilized. If not- let the fanat's guys fight in race without my possible stupid mistakes, when i ruining others good game and fun  :)
Track is awesome. Wishing a P962ST races here  :)

Laptimes for now seem to show same gaps between cars that there were at Silverstone. I'd be curious to see Honda's laptimes; FMG if possible can you compare them with the BRM? I don't know if you in VR have trouble seeing the RPMs.

About setups, I'm not a great expert. I'm using the same way like other cars in AC.

-Differential is maybe the most important thing in these cars. I like close diff.

-*Cambers: -1,5 front   -0,8 rear
-*Toe: neg in front and zero/slightly positive on rear
-*Height: lower possible with the rear slightly higher

-Springs, dampers are relative on track
-Anti-roll bars, first set the front and then the rear one to balance the handling of the car (understeering, oversteering). More bar, more precision.

-Check tire-pressure with app.

NB: * these values must be adjusted at the end, and are the values obtained. They depend on the suspension settings.

When I find a good setup (for Cooper) I will link it here using dropbox.

I think close battles are possible also with these cars, almost checking laptimes for moment. Me and Matteo have similar lap-times, here and at Silverstone.

I can see the BRM rev gauge easy enough, but in the Honda it's largely obscured in VR.
As the driver arm animation still works it's not a major problem.

In GPL, Kyalami was one of the few tracks that let the BRM compete with the rest. Well, by rest I mean anything upto a Cooper  ;D

Post by: phspok on December 01, 2018, 05:37:39 PM +0000
I like the BRM, it is rather tail heavy, but more stable then the Eagle that I could not get to grips with
it wanders around too much, like a jelly car. The Ferri is nice too not tried any others.

Title: Re: UKAC - Kyalami Grand Prix Legends - Dec 5
Post by: goldtop on December 01, 2018, 06:31:51 PM +0000
I hope to join the fun. I'll be in the BRM as I'm really not much slower in that than in the other cars and it is a great drive. I'll probably be at the back either way having not done much racing for a while now.

Tyre wear is much greater than with other cars but I managed a 30 minute race against the AI without any issues.

Here my setup with Cooper: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ddxsvgbcol43nqy/cooper%20kyalami.ini?dl=0

Not sure if it is good or not. Car is a bit dangerous on second and third corner, and on last one is a bit hard change 2nd-3rd gear controlling the car with only one hand. Maybe need a different gear-set.

There are only three cars for each make on the server. How are they allocated? I'd hate to practice with one car, just to get to the server for the race, and see it taken.
I've been driving F312 with the default setup, and 1.20.055 is already better than my GPL PB :)

Title: Re: UKAC - Kyalami Grand Prix Legends - Dec 5
Post by: Mark J on December 01, 2018, 09:47:29 PM +0000
Good point Syd, didn’t expect this mod to be quite so popular  :-\. I could do a driver entry file with peoples pre chosen cars, though that causes other problems. Easier if people state their intention to race and chosen car in this thread and we can try and make sure enough car variants are available on the server for race night.

and It will be last minute jump on the server if I can make it at all.

"The Eagle, introduced for the start of the 1966 Formula One season, is often regarded as being one of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars ever raced at the top levels of international motorsport."
It's for me. I love hi-tech cars  :shifty:

PS. Be warned guys that some of the cars has a bigger then true dimentions of collider ( contacts points). Sometimes up to 0,4 m bigger than visuals. We need save more free space for car to car distances.  :) Top accurate colliders has only Lotus 49 ans Ferrari 312 cars. Other cars can to steal up to 1meter of possible closest car distanses in longitudinal axle >:(
I hope i'll join.  :)

P.S. The 2.1b update is hosted on a different site to the original 2.0.  It seems to want to know my inside leg measurement.  Is it OK/safe?

think its just a different download engine. I installed it okay.

I did pm Pete this afternoon about the 2.1 update but he's probably out/busy so you may have to wait for him to be able to update the server. Why did they re-release the whole 500+mb package instead of a patch fix?  :(

I downloaded the Bugfix from that link and did try on an italian server. All works fine.

If you want to join the server until it's restarted by Pete, here is the link to come back to the v.2.0 =>https://www.dropbox.com/s/uk11vwkafpn0f6o/GPL%20MOD%20AC%202.0.zip?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/uk11vwkafpn0f6o/GPL%20MOD%20AC%202.0.zip?dl=0)

If you want to download the 2.1 by another link, I put it on my dropbox =>https://www.dropbox.com/s/wvlloex0ibnfjsq/GPL%20MOD%20AC%202.1B.zip?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/wvlloex0ibnfjsq/GPL%20MOD%20AC%202.1B.zip?dl=0)

edit: removed the original files for Ferrari 312 and Lotus 49 by both links. Links are working but you must follow the procedure described in the race announcement.

I tried both the F312 and the Brabham. The Fezza is a very nice drive and pretty controllable too. Did most of my laps in the Brabham and although it is harder to drive because of the heavy understeer it also is more of a challenge.

So put me down for a Brabham drive please.

Anyone tried applying those setup tips for their particular car from the link that Ceolmor put up on page 2?  Only just got around to checking the link out. Has some useful advice there if you click on each car type.

Hi Willian and welcome  :).  (Thanks Fabri for contacting)

No pre-chosen skins as we haven’t used a driver entry file as it’s a non championship event.

Welcome too Alessandro, will need your car choice before Wednesday.

Think you're getting enough times here Mark. ;)
Especially given how close some of us are lapping in the differing chassis - Weds should be a massive laugh  if we get a good grid ;D
I'm already looking forward to the fight with Matteo and Fabri, hopefully a few other guys will pick up a few 10ths in their chosen chariots and make things real close 8)
(That said I have to do more work on the Honda now as Matteo has found some spare time behind the drivers seat or something...)

I'm impressed with how the cars behave Vs their GPL counterparts.
The only odd ones out are the Brabham (Seems a tad slow), and the Cooper (seems a tad fast, and I'm still being wound up by the engine missing on 4 :hammer:).
The rest are where I'd expect here in terms of time and feel.

I'll stick the Eagle setup on stracker tonight.
Hopefully I can have a go in the 49 and 312 tonight also, before going back to the Honda again.

It's very unlikely I'll race, I recall from my GPL days these things are not easy to drive and require some practice. Sadly I've had no time for that and I'm busy again this evening.

BRM BRM is most stable, the Honda is nice, the Ferri was ok, the Eagle was like herding cats  :o

how many grid slots has Kyalami got? and how many car types are there to choose from? (Excluding the two that were already dropped).  I'm at work so cant check.

Will try to ensure there is enough of each pre-chosen car type and then allow a spare few of the others for 'turn up on the night' drivers.

38 slots (as signed in track description)  8)
8 car types available now in server (McLaren and Matra-Ford are not available for now)

I originally set the practice server up for 30 slots, 3 each of the 10 cars. Track will support 38 pit boxes.

Darn - beaten to it ;)

No wonder I didn't try the Mclaren, it's not on the server!
Why isn't it there? It's a 3l car and yet the 2l Lotus 33 is available?  ???

I'd also take the matra for a test if it became available, it could be competitive on really twisty tracks and it could be interesting to see how it compares here..

One day I'll get something right  ::)

Surprised that only the Mclaren was missing, I had 30 cars in the entry list but forgot to change the server config file so that said 22. So I would had have guess these was only one Lotus 49 and no Matra or Mclaren.

I've restarted the server so things might be happier now.

I'll do it after I've eaten so should have something in an hour or 2.

I've just had a go in the Lotus 49.

If I can get a little more traction without making it too stable there is still loads more time to be found I think.

i tryed yesterdy night this mod (apart ferrari - i haven't that DLC) and it seems quite good for a gpl nostalgic like me.

so...
I'm monitoring your site/league, if race days, format and times will be compatible I could try to participate
we'll see :)

It could be better, but feels quite stable/grippy compared to the Lotus/Eagle. Still not slow though.
That's fuelled for 40 mins with my driving, you might need to change tire pressures depending on how your style differs to mine :)

Just for car spread I am going to take the  McLaren  :)

1:18 mids seems my average pace with 30L onboard, not sure how to find a bit more time  :-\ Do you recommend more or less power diff for that uphill right final turn? In the McLaren I have 45/30 power/coast. I’d need hours to test all the setup permutations  :(

Easiest way to see which way to go, is to set it to the maximum. For me that's the quickest way of finding what I like.

Quite a few new names on the server last night but dont know if they are intending to race tonight. I think with 30+ grid slots its best just to assign an even number of each car  :-\ But slightly more popular are the Ferrari & Cooper.

These cars are just sooooooo much fun.  Got bumped on the start line, then second lap two cars collided in front of me and I had nowhere to go.  After pitting for repairs, had a great race with Syd in his little red Ferrari, even though I was a lap down on him.  Hope he didn't mind, but otherwise it would have just been hot lapping for us both.

That was a hell of a lot of fun. The opening fight with Matteo was frankly amazing.
I bogged down on the start and had to kick the clutch again to get away, which allowed Matteo into first. He didn't pull away immediately and seemed much slower out of the turns (brand new Honda V12 Vs 10 year old Masserati V12!) so I just waited until the main straight and then powered up alongside over the hill.
Matteo didn't give up and we battle side by side for the rest of the lap - each car gaining the advantage at different points but being surprisingly well matched.
Then Matteo lost it and collected Fabri, gifting me a large lead and I guess pretty much destroying his own car.

If anyone had the reply can you please share it, I'd love to watch that fight - but for some reason my replay is missing the first 5 minutes or so  :-\

Well done Fabri and Alexey on the podium, and to all the survivors. In GPL just finishing is half the race   ;D

He used Dorman Olas, and I saw his name in the driver list, he tried to connect with different cars, but never got fully on the server.

3 possible issues :
1. The mod is installed wrong, if he hadn't installed the 49 and 312 correctly the game would crash back to menu as soon as it had to load one.
2. He doesn't have the 2.1 version of the cars (although he shouldn't be able to join in this case).
3. He doesn't have the correct version of the track  - although again, I don't think he should be able to join the server in that case.

AC is fairly solid so there isn't much else I can think of..

But it was too short. I was hoping for a close battle with you and Fabri during the entire race, but I ruined mine and his race with a power oversteer after two laps. I'm really angry with myself, because it could have been a great race. I hope we will have the chance to race again with this mod chaps. See you  ;)

And sorry again Fabri :(

He used Dorman Olas, and I saw his name in the driver list, he tried to connect with different cars, but never got fully on the server.
He tried another name first, Dorman Kudin. He's then appeared in the results file only as Dorman Olas, with 4 different cars, but with no laps times so I'll manual delete him before importing as I don't know his forum name.

The reason in the log file for his connections terminating was

Code:
read tcp xxx.xxx.xxx.37:9957->xxx.xxx.xxx.214:21839: wsarecv: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
I assume he can join other AC servers ok? I wonder if the name change, but same GUID, confused the poor game?

so it seems like after 7 pages of pre race chat only about 10-12 guys raced?  ??? Must admit i thought this mod would be more popular with the attention it garnered.  :-\  As always on our server it seems more people like to hotlap than actually race  :(

We would need about 12-15 regulars to make it a decent series.

Though we are in the xmas silly spell so may be difficult for people to race. :-\  We can run another test race in January, especially as my ISP denied me a race in them :)

Interested to hear if people were able to 'race' them against each other and how the different cars fared.

Yes, too bad you had a disco MJ.

As I had an accident in the second or third lap I had no real fights on track as the gaps where quite big. However being in a the slower rated? Brabham I think I had a reasonable pace. Faster guys can get it round much quicker I am sure.

It was pretty brilliant and fun to drive these things, so i am up for a series. GPL style or fixed car choice, either way is good afaik. Just less fun if the fast guys also pick the fastest rides, then we are better of with a Lotus 49 cup.  ::)

yeah looking at the laptimes i could have been battling the top 3  :o  :'(

sounds like there were quite a few incidents though for an 11 car grid  :P which is my main fear for these cars in a series.

Hmm, the Mclaren shows as a dummy car in the results yet the others are shown  ???

Well. I ran across London, ran for a train, rammed other cars out of the way from Preston to Southport
and managed to get back in time to race  ;D

Was fun. limited practice time, and possibly the slowest (and to me most stable) car meant I was as usual
off the pace, but had a few laps of getting in people's way. I assumed that Wilian was in  Red Ferri, but looks
like it was a Cooper, and though he was quicker over a lap, the H16 flew up the straight faster. Lost it into T1 a couple
of times, and may have bent something, but the car was still drivable.

FMG lapped me in the white whale, that doesn't seem so much whale here as dolphin. awesome pace  :thumbup1:

Back in the day, when I raced real GPL I mostly drove the Ferrari with Remco Moedt and one season I ran the Eagle, as my
team mate was Chris Moses, and had to look not too slow.... Here the Eagle would be my fave, but I was struggling
to control it.

Oh, and I'm not sure my replay has autosaved, and would like to watch it like FMG if anyone can upload one somewhere
that would be much appreciated.

One thing that more regular ACers might be able to help with?
Always in AC I have trouble with steering, originally the steering was not sensitive enough, and needed massive
arm twirling to make anything happen, sorted that these days with steering angle etc, but for these cars
I could do with more FFB wheel centering. I have increased the FFB level, but that just seem to make road
vibration shake the desk to bits. How can I increase centering without breaking my wrists on kerbs?
It is a G27.

I wasn't sure what a suitable option was in the existing database of cars. I think Dave trawls these unknowns every now and again and creates a new car or maps it as appropriate.

I am on a DFGT and I was having mehh FFB until I used the LUT file. Now it is giving me lots more feeling around center position and back to 900 lock as I don't have to over turn the wheel to get the car to respond.
Pretty sure it would work with the G27.

Oh and running a possible series somewhere in 2019 gives us a bit more time to test all the cars out.

Mark, here's my feedback, for what its worth.

(a) A series with all the GPL cars available would work.  There was a good spread of cars in this race with 5 different marques in the top 5.  And even though we were in different cars, at the end of the day the fast guys were the fastest and us slower guys were the slowest.  I qualified behind Baikal which is where I would have expected to be if this was a single car event.

(b)  Were there more crashes than usual?  My coming together on lap 2, when two cars crashed in front of me, could have happened in any race.    The stats say I had 13 contacts with other cars, but 7 were at the start when I got bumped from behind and 6 were in the aforesaid crash on lap 2.

(c)  I had a great race with Syd, Eagle v Ferrari.  I would say the Eagle (not me) was faster than the Ferrari (not Syd) but we went down the main straight neck and neck, playing chicken for the bend, on several occasions.

Using LUT with G27. But in some cars i can disable it.
Plus in setup options of this cars we have a steering help. Making steering curve not linear. Default is 100. I used max (200) and it was more informative and smooth in center zone.

Ok , Thanks, I was wondering what the steering help was for, the same option has appeared in R3E now as well

The race had all the prerequisites for having numerous participants and having closed battles, especially between me, FMG and Matteo (we had always did similar lap-times in the previous days).

But it was not, for several reasons.

The race had some accidents directly at the start, at least from what I saw from my mirrors.
FMG, Matteo and I were enclosed in 1 sec (even less in some places) and there should be an epic battle for 30 laps. Unfortunately Matteo lost the control for some reason and his crazy car crossed the whole track, hitting me hard on the side. I think other cars behind me have also been involved.
I came back losing some positions and about 15 seconds from FMG, with the nose of my car very damaged.
I had a nice and gentle duel with Alexey.
In second position I tried to push as much as possible, but by then I was too far from FMG.

My qualifications were terrible, i had big problems with framerates ( especially at the second corner and the last one, where there are the grand-stands) and this distracted me a lot. I managed to make only a decent lap (the last one) and not even perfect.
My PC is old like these cars.
I had also problem with "visual fluctuation" on main straight (more with Alexey's car). This thing can be caused also by bad pc performances or it is more a internet connection thing?

In short, an unlucky race in many things. I'm sure others can be better.

PS: Matteo, the Cooper's team-manager is furious with you. I believe you will lose the place.  :(

As Fabri says, close racing was very posible - if the replay does surface just watch the first few laps. Way better than GT3's and arguably more going on between Manteos and I than even occurred in the TCR's ;D
From the description Manteo's accident was a very out of character loss of control - this could happen to anyone in any car so I don't think we should read anything into it.

I would definitely be up for punishing myself further in the White Whale to claim further victories in HER name.

As you know FMG that is not going to happen from a historical perspective.  ;)

Big thank you for this, just watched the beginning while having breakfast  ;D

Mark, download it and take a look. The field is split by two accidents on lap 2.
Each are the sort of racing incidents we could -and do- see in any other series :)
In fact the one that took out everyone from 4th back even had a glorious GPL flavour to it, minus the traditional lag and poor collision detection though  ;D

At least these car were fun to drive and not a shopping cart like the TCR with the brake bias 90:10 to not flatspot the rear tyres.

Now I see Ginetta for next series, so maybe we will see again in 2020

I agree the TCR were a bit winky physics wise, but what is wrong with the Ginetta's?

I just tried them at CORE and I had bad feelings on it about physics. Not that the other other Kunos GT4s (Porche and Maserati Cayman) are far better from Ginetta, but I remember they were acceptable talking about physics and could provide some close racing too if we make a single make. All in all it's always a matter of taste Jeff. I'll try again the Ginetta and I let you know if I've changed my opinion.

You guys have obviously never owned a Clio 172 cup - the brake bias is so extreme from the factory there is actually a note in the MOT instructions so they aren't failed for poor rear brake performance  ;D

I don't like the original gt4's but I was pleasantly surprised about the Ginetta's when I tried them. Haven't driven them in a while and there were 2 versions of the car, so I'm not sure how they handle now.

It's a Renault, expectations are never high with their cars :P
