Title: UKGPL Season 34 (2019) 1955 Grand Prix - Zandvoort - Jan 20
Post by: Phil Thornton on January 10, 2019, 10:47:18 PM +0000
Season 34 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 1 – Zandvoort

The first race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Zandvoort in the Netherlands.  The first race held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit was on 7 August 1948. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. From 1952 until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 circus left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the 1955 Grand Prix cars will again be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=664&theme=6). Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement. See table below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

methinks Clive is getting a little over excited about the start of the new 55 season?  ::)

If I were a really mean person ( which of course I am not, as you all know ) I could offer a plain brown envelope stuffed with currency for someone to take him out at T1 :shifty:

But no-one would do that......would they??  >:D

BTW 2 sleeps!!!  ;)

Posters all printed, in Dutch, and in the hands of Mabel's extended family in the Netherlands.

As this contract will have to be completed prior to any vote on Brexit, the amount offered is subject to EU trade and competition laws, so my legal expert ( read "Arnold" here ) has advised me that I must offer this up for tender to the lowest bidder.  :-\

This does pre-suppose that I can catch him in the first place to perform said manoeuvre, I cant. I'm out.
Also, who is UKGPLs brexit minister? I need a GB sticker for the back of the Gordini.

A '55 practice server would be nice, once in a blue moon!

Edit:  Typical!  Not had a race since the beginning of December and now I have two in three days!  http://pdlr.gaiztor.com/ are running Buenos Aires on Tuesday if anyone is interested in more 55 action.

Just did an offline practice in that infernal French Grotdini, and I cannot get it below 1:40 at Zandvoort, so the race on Sunday is not looking promising  :-\

Never joined the Gaiztor server, but we ( UKGPL) have a 66 race on Tues, so that kind of takes care of that option?

Afraid not. I can't do it on my skiis either  :). However I have managed to change the server starter to Axel. Axel had already agreed to provide a server for the race, I just forgot to update the race announcement.

No, this is not server related, it was found in the new SCX mod too, wings working offline but not online.

Is an internal code adress difference in on/offline GPL :o

Hi Rich, and welcome.

As David has stated, there is some admin to do, as in vote, and then you should be good to go.  I don't think that the pw has been issued yet so if you register, by indicating if you will be Full Time or not, then you should recieve the pw.  If not then get to the chat room before the race.

The season details explain the car choices.  If you have not done any 55mod racing then you need to do some practice this afternoon, to get your head around the brakes.  My server is running for anyone who wants to practice.  ;-)

Good luck!

Hi Rich
Your registration has been processed so you should be able to see the password.
You can take any car you like for this race. Everyone has enough tokens for any chassis for the first race.
Please be careful on the brakes (or lack of them). Out braking yourself in training doesn't impact other drivers but in a league race it is different. Good luck tonight.
Regards
Phil

Grats John, great drive.  Didn't see you put a foot wrong.  Well not wrong enough!  ;-)

With 7 to go I was just begining to think that I should not chance anything and take the points for second when I made a slight mistake at Tarzan.  That gave John a five second cushion and let him cruise to the finish.

An acceptable start to the season.  Especially with Evil being back in the pack.  ;-)

I'm sure all will change when the tight fisted so-and-so starts to spend some dollars!

Thanks Clive. A totally unexpected win. Alessandro was in a class of his own qualifying over a second ahead of the rest of the field and had he not decided to explore the surrounding sand dunes early on I'm sure would have won this one easily. Had a suprisingly clean race, twice I tried to throw it all away , once getting very sideways in Scheivlak when it seemed certain I wasn't going to get it back and again when for some reason unknown to me I decided that after 25 laps of taking  the right hander between Tunnel Oost and Panoramabocht in 4th I changed into 3rd. Fortunately both times Clive was too far back to take advantage but that Connaught certainly is no slouch.

Thanks Guys, A blast as always.

TTFN
John.

Grats to John, Clive and Fulvio.

A little miffed that Mr Loynes has discovered the charms of the Connaught  :-\.  I campaigned with it through most races last season and it is an acquired taste, but the car can be made to perform quite nicely. I was hoping that this secret pocket rocket would stay that way.
I thought that this season I might try the Gordini for a few races and see if I could squeeze some points out of it. I was helped by the small grid for this race, but handicapped by the useless gearbox and getting the damned thing moving off the grid.
As a result, I was in last place going into Tarzan on lap 1. Zandvoort  has only one real overtaking place, at Tarzan, and for me in the Gordini I had to be in the slipstream of faster cars to even have a chance of progressing.

It soon became apparent that the pace amongst the regulars had improved since last year, and my hopes of stealing points in the Gordini were soon dispelled. I might have saved some dollars, but it cost me valuable points.  :-\

I should offer apologies to our new member Rich, who was mercilessly hassled by me during last night's race as I tried to make up ground from early mistakes. Also to Alessandro, (I was pushing Fran for a passing opportunity and it was clear that his Vanwall mirrors had fogged up when I had to take to the grass a couple of times to avoid contact),
I had not expected anyone to make passing move at that point and was entirely focused on sticking close to Fran for a tow down the straight, when a wheel appeared on my left  :o....too late to leave room, and on the limit of adhesion and directional control in the Gordini ended in a tangle.

I haven't seen any posts on the subject Fran.

Well done for getting the Vanwall to the finish.  Hopefully with the right number of gears?

Well done to Rich on getting to the finish in his first 55 race.

I believe there is some condition on the release of the 55 mod that prevents any addition or modification for "x" months after release? and this includes the insertion of a virtual mirror. I would assume that this period has expired by now and somewhere there should be a mirror patch available....but I have not seen one  :-\

Is this because you are using "Letter Box" mode?

I have just looked at my replay in letter box mode and only the top half of each mirror can be seen.  If you run in full screen then all the mirrors can be seen top to bottom.

When Evil was dodging about behind you in the early laps, all that was visible to you was his head.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.
