Great 3 next combo coming!
Hop in server and set your times guys! What the hell - 3 days untill the round- nobody drived!  :taz:
Some russian league has the good rule- pilots who not done 20 valid laps on server will not allow for racing in event!   :thumbup1:
Mark, may be it's time to take this rule!

Not had a chance yet due to busy real life this week, hope to get on later today. Should be a great combo, FMG will love it as the Evora races in Japanese JCT300 rounds for real  8)

I generally have a weekly hotlap session with a couple of buddies on sundays,  but I'll try and get on the practice server tomorrow or tuesday  :)

I'm gonna run supersofts this week  :P

Amazingly I'm actually enjoying the car here, you can actually get enough heat into the tires to throw it around a bit without spinning.

First race I've actually looked forward to in these 8)

oh yeah we've noticed you spinning every race FMG  ::) ;)

You can really feel the tyres working (screaming!) here through the s-bend complex, my fronts are going up 3 degrees at some turns :o  I'm getting great feedback through the wheel though, you can actually feel what the tyres are doing which is nice. The temp still drops below optimal at some parts of the circuit though with these darn mediums.
I wonder if its because the medium tyre is meant for harsher gt3 loads than a gt4 can put through them and/or the gt4 being a lighter car or even because its mid-engined :-\
I think thats why the plucky few who used softs the last few races have enjoyed a good advantage with the more optimal grip/heat range. I'd be very surprised if you could survive 40mins around here on them though, unless you took it easy through the s-corner section, but you would lose too much laptime.

FMG are you using 1st gear in hairpin and 2nd gear for spoon exit?
Are you again outwitting all normal people?  ;D

His uber-time was set on softs and low fuel, so not comparitive to us normo's ...so far  :P

My car seemed to refuse to go into 1st at the hairpin, always beeping at me on the downshift so i stuck to tardy 2nd on my runs so far.

Just tryed softs here and i hate it in my  setup. Cant drive it faster and stable than meds. So, i am going to Q with meds. I have no ideas how to find 2 seconds to fmg laptime. They knows a setup secret of this car.

Post by: FullMetalGasket on March 18, 2019, 02:23:41 PM +0000
oh yeah we've noticed you spinning every race FMG  ::) ;)

I've intentionally run slower but safer setups than I'm capable of so far this series though, hence why both Matteo and NFSW were always quicker in absolute pace.
My reasoning always payed out until the last round too, as my competition would spin out from errors I was still able to come back from  ;)

This round I'm currently learning towards a more risky setup.

I had to make a totally different setup for the Softs laps btw. Temp and pressure management on a medium setup makes them too unwieldy.

Making a setup correctly compromise your pressures to suit the track is one of my favourite pay offs this week.
Ultra rewarding when you go the right way as you instantly see timing gains. It's wierd though,  as you're essentially setting the car up to do a lap on a totally different circuit for the 2nd half of the lap.

As for my uber time, you should see my medium times, even the default setup was enough to put me top of the table last night ;D

??? I'm 8 secs off the server times, most of my laps going backwards, any tips, going to specsavers not one of them, finding this car very hard.

Max, NFSW, please turn up and wipe that smug grin of satisfaction from his face  ;D  at least make him work for it  ;)

Oh don't worry, I fully expect at least one of those 2 to knock me off the top of the table before Weds - Jeff too if he joins us - despite my slightly riskier setup.

Bob:
My tips for these are that they are lethal on cold tires, and become dodgy when you are more/less than 2 psi from optimum too.
Give it at least 2 laps before deciding what to adjust your pressures to, and remamber that the pressure change will directly affect temps also so ignore those until the pressures seem right. (here at Suzuka your left side will still be cold/underpressured entering T1 on the 2nd lap).
Remove camber, this will have some effect on stability and the cars are running far more than they actually need.
Softer springs and stiff ARBs seem to be a good speed/stability compromise, you'll want to play with the shocks to suit though.
You can also raise the nose relative to the rear to increase stability in and out of turns.

If I remember right, both the ride height and suspension travel values are tiny in the stock setup - this isn't a big issue here (see 2 posts ago) it is worth remembering if any of the remaining rounds have big kerbs though.
Even with 0 wing on the front the cars need 7 or 8 on the back. At 7 rear they're getting sketchy, lower gets very interesting. very fast ;D
If the car's snapping on lift off/turn in then an easy fix for the high speed corners is to add rear wing, you'll need to move the rear toe out though to maintain turn under power out of corners - which naturally makes the car more skittish in the slow stuff, especially as you should really raise rear spring force to compensate at high speed.

Finally, as this is a toy car (modern) the ABS and Traction control are the key to going fast, play with them until you're happy and don't be afraid to give the car full beans mid turn once it's settled.  :thumbup1:

*edit* also be sure to practice on the server - conditions are normally warmer (faster and easier) than default AC when you're off line.

Was struggling to find consistent pace in all sessions as my split meter was stuck and not telling me anything so had no idea where I was losing or gaining time each lap. Hadn't realised how much I relied on it! Was anyone else's broken?

Oddly, Suzuka is one of the few where my telemetry always works.
It's very rare I can monitor my splits in qually normally.

As for the race, after a good start it was mine to throw away - so I did  ::)
Now I know how NSFW must have felt at Mugello ;D

ah you were missed as one of my usual sparring partners Alexey  :'(  i had a lonely race from lights to flag in 4th.

as often happens, i seemed to suddenly be 1 sec off my pre-event practise times with the same car/same setup/same fuel load  ???  I couldnt get into the 2:03s in qual nor the 2:04's in race yet i'd been doing that regularly in practise  :taz:
I could tell within a couple of laps that i had too much wing as the 3 ahead pulled a gap down the long back straight and i would only close a tad in sector 1.
Good thing was i didnt make a single error the whole race and at least had the sight of nsfw a fair way up the road to let me know i wasnt a million miles off the podium pace  :)  Those non-practising slackers behind were miles back too sadly  tumbleweed ;)

Your problem is that you don't join the server early enough to get your 'eye' in Mark.
I find I need a minimum of 30 mins just circulating to re-attune to these cars, hence why in practice I was just doing a very long session until 5 mins to go while max and NFSW continually improved their times with frequent shorter runs.
My qually lap was my best yet by nearly half a second, I would have no way of equaling it even with the same setup without a good session warming up on mediums..

i totally agree but main reason for that, with the brightness from the Rift, my eyes cant cope with a 40min race plus long practise and qually without giving me pain/eye-strain by the end of the race. I'm usually really suffering the last 5 mins of the race and cant wait to tear the thing off my head.  :( So now i try not to join until 8pm for a 15min practise before qually, which on a long track like this is only about 7 laps to try and get in the rhythm. Not ideal :'(
With the lack of close combat lately from smaller grids, i've actually started wondering if its worth the grief and poorer resolution running the Rift.
The latest Dirt Rally doesnt support it and i've found it far more relaxing using my triple screens again.
You cant beat the immersion the rift gives you though. Loved sitting on the grid and peering out my side window back at Sharks Kellogs car etc last night.  8)
problem is i work with 3d CAD design software all day so my eyes take a pounding even before i get to the race  :'(

Mark,  are you using a modified ppfilter with the rift?

it makes heck of a difference as you can compensate for the oversaturated colors and brightness. I had a rift (now on vive-pro), and without it meh, you're only getting half the goodness

Been all morning trying to load the rift software, finally done after contact with Oculus and multiple attempts, hope this does not happen again, put in hours of practice for last nights race and got into the 06`s.

i think i am but been so long since i installed the Rift that i cant remember. Sounds vaguely familiar though. Got a link otherwise? How do you find the Vive-pro compared to the rift then? Assuming it was a worthy swap  :-\

Unlucky Bob, i saw there was a notification on the Oculus menu but thought 'best ignore that on race night'  :)

I'll send you my modded filter :-)

vive-pro vs rift - its better, the image is that bit sharper and its most noticeable when looking into the distance, its much easier to see braking points and the cars dont turn into pixelated blobs nearly so badly. Out of the box its still limited by the lenses though. It has grooved fresnel lenses which are similar to the rift and they produce far too much blurring and "god rays" from bright light sources. I got brave and within a couple of weeks of buying it I bought a samsung gear for its lenses and 3d printed some adaptors - now its wow, all that nasty blurring and godrays from the grooves in the fresnel lenses are gone, the image is much sharper and its a big improvement! Definitely a worthwhile buy if you are prepared to do the lens swap.

Thanks Max  :)

I think i will wait for the next generation of headsets to come out. They really need to improve the resolution and give adjustment to brightness etc.  I have fairly light sensitive eyes anyway so having two torches shine in them for an hour is not the best idea  :P I need tinted lenses  :)

Yeh for sure, VR is still on the bleeding edge and we also need much faster GPUs to make it work with higher res headsets.  When that day comes its gonna be great 8)
