Title: Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy 2019
Post by: EvilClive on April 05, 2019, 07:43:42 PM +0100
We are approaching Easter time when we traditionally run a short series of races in memory of Joe Shaw, who raced under the name of Beefpie.
He was a young man who raced with us in UKGPL and was very quick. He also raced in the real world with Ginettas and a Porsche at various circuits around the UK.
Sadly Joe passed away at a very young age in tragic circumstances and we have run a race series in his name every year. His father, Malcolm Shaw, has created fantastic trophy for the series utilising a genuine Lotus steering wheel on a plinth. We try and meet up at a real life circuit later in the year where Malcolm will present the trophy to the series winner ( you only get to hold the JSMT for a year, unless you successfully defend your title!).

Each year we try to dream up something slightly different to challenge those who wish to compete. So, the proposal this year is to run a 4 race series based on tracks that Joe might have raced upon.

The car choice is fixed for Pro drivers, but Ams have a choice.

Race 1   65's      Pro with the Lotus 33 @ Brands Indy 20 laps (Ams have free choice )
Race 2   66's      Pro with the TIG Eagle Weslake 3ltr @ Oulton Park  20 laps ( Ams may use any 3 litre car except the Ferrari or Cooper )

Race 3   67 F2's  Pro with the Ferrari 166 @ Castle Combe 20 laps ( Ams have free choice )
Race 4   67's      Pro with the Lotus 49 @ Goodwood 20 laps  (Ams have free choice)

JSMT race dates:

Sunday  28/04/2019 - Race 1 and Race 2 = 30 min races each with 15 mins qually - 2 different tracks
Tuesday 30/04/2019 - Race 3 and Race 4= 30 min races each with 15 mins qually - 2 different tracks

The current proposal is for the Trophy presentation to take place at the Brands Hatch Superprix on the 29th-30th June.
( https://brandshatch.msv.com/BH-19-HSCC-SUPERPRIX) A lot of historic machinery on track at 10% of the cost of the Goodwood Revival.

Regulars will probably camp for the weekend ( camping is FREE at the circuit with access to the bars and retuarants during the evenings for refreshment ) and as you will see the price is very reasonable. We would hope that Malcolm Shaw will join us on the Sunday for the presntation of the Trophy and probably a pint  ;). Everyone is welcome and we have great time discussing, in depth, aspects of simracing and real life racing.

Great to see this getting organized again for the remembrance of Joe Shaw, and for Malcolm and his family. Ofcourse I will compete again. ;)

Would love to make another visit over the pond, but it's not very likely, financially...I might contact Tommie to drive me again  :P

Good to hear from you again Robert, although if you are on track the rest of us might struggle to get to the top of the podium!!  lol

It would be great to see you and Tommie again if you can get over the "pond", then we can buy you some more Guiness??  ::)   Hmmm, if we could only get you to drink Guiness before racing  ;)  ;D

Sounds as if there could be a story, just itching to get out...?  :D

Can I just do Race 4?  I don't do the other mods.

As regards Guiness...my legal advisors say that I am not at liberty to expand further  ::)

And to Clive...you may compete in as many, or as few, rounds as you like.  ;D

So why do Pros get the fastest car in race four?

The reasoning is thus..... In the past I have tried to level the playing field to give the Am rated drivers a chance of claiming the JSMT Trophy. But, as one might expect, alien DNA trumps any human endeavour every time.  :-\.   I could give the PROs the slowest car, along with 4 SnG's, but I can bet that one of them would produce a miraculous performance in a 3 wheeled BRM to take the win, where others fell by the wayside.

So.…….
The Lotus is undoubtedly the fastest car, but also probably the most fragile if abused?. Within UKGPL the structure of the league races usually means that the Lotus is seldom used.  So, in practical terms it might be a step on the wild side for many of the PRO's.
Plus, the intention was to make the final race a real contest at the limit for even the best drivers. Some of the faster Ams might opt for a different car that offers them better reliability and a more comfortable ride.

If the previous 3 races have allowed one of the Ams to accumulate enough points to lead the table, then Goodwood might become a very tactical race? Just trying to prolong the tension until the end of the last race... and set up a full throttle blast for the deciding round.

Well for PDLR '67 races I have regressed to using 25T based setups by Dave Wilkinson!

Does this make me an AM?  ;-)

It would be great to see you and Tommie again if you can get over the "pond", then we can buy you some more Guiness??  ::)

Sure, and all the other brands available in the pub, like last time out.  :P  I'll then skip the hot chili though, I don't want to keep the camping site awake again the whole night eh. Man, I was sick... ;D

Seriously, another visit isn't likely. Life's become a lot more expensive this year and as always short on money...

Hmmm, if we could only get you to drink Guiness before racing  ;)  ;D

I drink Heineken before racing, mostly one pint (don't drink & drive, drink & simrace). Drinking Guinness wouldn't make much of a difference  ;D

WE APPEAR TO BE GENERATING A LOT OF INTEREST IN THIS SERIES AND WE COULD FIND THAT WE HAVE MORE THAN 19 CARS FOR THE RACES.

ALTHOUGH THAT IS A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE, WE MAY NEED TO PROVIDE A SECOND SERVER AND WORK OUT A FAIR WAY OF AWARDING THE POINTS.

A POLL HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE TOP OF THIS TOPIC TO TRY AND ESTIMATE THE LIKELY NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS. PLEASE VOTE IF YOU EXPECT TO JOIN IN THIS SERIES.

Sorry,  I'll only be able to make the first race each evening.
The 2nd race finishes far too close to when I get up for work in the mornings!

Thank you Axel for providing the server for these races.
