Season 34 - 69X - Round 7 - Clermont

The 7th race in the 1969 Grand Prix series takes us to Clermont-Ferrand on circuit CHARADE in Auvergne where four Formula One French Grands Prix were held : 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as that of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971.
My hero Chris Amon -who recently passed away- set the laprecord here in 1972 in his Matra, in an epic recovery effort to finish third after having suffered from a puncture.

For the first season we use the new 69x token system for your car choice,
so please read the rules and car ranking on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=666&theme=6)

We race in intermediate mode.

- Pro driver have no shift+r available
- Intermediates and Amateurs have a single shift+r with a stop and go in the pits available!

Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

It would have been Fran's second shift-R. I was following him when his engine exploded a few laps earlier.

I couldn't believe how fast Tim and Uli were, amazing times

Grats to Tim and Uli and all finishers.

When I saw that Tim was using the Brab BT24, in which he set his 2:57 lap last time we raced here, I was expecting some stellar times  :-\
Uli was ultra quick in the Ferrari and the 4 wheel drive Matra that I was lumbered with was just no match for them.  Somehow I scraped 3rd place on the grid with Tris and the bellowing BRM sat on my tail.
Tris got past at T1, and I thought that I had finished my race at T2 on lap 1 when I threw the car into the countryside on cold tyres  :-\ I bounced back onto the track in last place, expecting that the car would be damaged..........but gradually i upped the pace and everything seemed to be working OK.

The rest of the race was all about catching cars ahead and I expected that it would be hard to pass, but at least 4 drivers just pulled over and allowed me a free pass..thank you all. Eventually I was up to 3rd and with no chance of catching Tim or Uli it was simply a drive to the flag and avoid Tim lapping me !!!

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Still got some gremlins on this new PC as every 4 minutes something takes focus away from GPL and it stutters and I lose sound. Sometimes the taskbar appears as well.

I did 2 laps offline before joining the server and it was OK after I stopped the usual programs but when I joined the server it was back again.

Managed to get 1 lap in at the end that was good enough for Ams pole.

Luckily with a 3 minute+- lap, every time I exited the last corner I shifted up to second, wiggled the mouse and clicked the button then shifted up to third and luckily that was enough to keep focus on the GPL window. Not great for concentration but first world problems I guess.

.... at least 4 drivers just pulled over and allowed me a free pass..thank you all.

Had a couple of miinor incidents, one of which damaged the suspension and the car felt a bit odd after that but was good enough to keep lapping reasonably, though I did give Clive a shock when it caught me out and he took avoiding action. Seemed only fair to let him go when he caught me again as we're not really racing each other and I didn't need him buzzing around behind me in the twisty bits.

Great circuit, one of my favourites, even though I'm nowhere near the quick drivers here. Some great times up ahead.

Yes i didn't see any sense on your speed holding you. I was doing better on that track years ago with a brabham..the setup was not very good i think.
Very demanding track. incredible speed in front.

Grats to Tim and Uli and all finishers.

When I saw that Tim was using the Brab BT24, in which he set his 2:57 lap last time we raced here, I was expecting some stellar times  :-\

My original intention had been to take the MS80 to see if it could beat my old record.
I couldn't get it to drive as nicely though on the limit - it was much safer, but that safety took the edge off.
I think it may also be the added width of the car, I'm pretty certain that the MS10 is quicker than the 80 at Monaco for that exact reason!

My race went very well, I think my race fastest lap is quicker than my old race FL in the Brab - but I did run into some unusual mechanical difficulties from lap 5 or 6 which forced me to take it more steadily.

I'd tweaked the old race setup (that always had less downforce than the the qually setup to ensure I could reach T2 first) to try to increase my lap times while not loosing me too much time down the straight on lap 1.
This evidently worked, but the age of my wheel and the severity of the steering work required here actually caused my G25's encoder to get lost.
Somewhere around lap 6 I ran slightly too tight to the inside of a fast corner,  one I know not to intentionally drop a wheel off of. And I put a wheel in the dirt, this always causes a massive feedback spike and normally causes an accident but I managed to save it.
On the next straight I realised my wheel was no longer centered on the straights and was about 10 or 12 degrees off to the left. This was throwing me a bit in the fast left/right sections so I backed off a bit thinking I'd damaged the suspension.

After the race I checked GPLRA, apparently I managed the entire race with no damage. So I fired GPL back up, yup, wheel was still off centre.
After quiting and unplugging/re-plugging the wheel it suddenly center normally again!

Very annoying as my intention had been to take the record for race Fl. I possibly had the car to do it but was let down by my own wheel!

Thanks to the backmarkers for spotting me and giving room, good work on the odd car choices some (especially Axel!) and well done to the finishers.
That was hard, but a bloody good challenge as always

I guess you want to write BT26.

The world record with the BT24 is 3:13 (from Tommie TVO) according to GPLRank site.

Bastian, what happened to you on the last lap ?  engine trouble ?

I don't know how long my career will last, it's terrible and i'am only 34.

Congratulation Master of Clermont, great, sovereign win!
No chance for me, what I realized very early in practice.
So I made my race with a fine, secure but not fast rhythm. SRY to all none finishers but I love that circuit – It was great to feel the flow and finished at second :)
Many THX to Phil, Andreas and Axel for fair let me pass in practice and race.
In practice Axel let me pass at the same place as Rindt let pass Beltoise in 1969 – there was no other possibility before. Nice to remember, nice to feel this realism of GPL … Apropos nice pw too
Congratulation to Evil and all finishers and THX to our admins.
Get well Bastian all the best to you.

Yes Uli, Chris Amon and Clermont are famous...

I had no tokens left after Spa so I decided to take the cheepest car for a track where I have no future ;D

This 66 Eagle 2.7litre was fun to drive but extreme slow uphill.

Congrats Tim, Uli, and Clive! Tim winning here isn't surprising. He's very strong on this track and good with this mod. I thought about trying to join this race but I wasn't really prepared for the difficult task that Clermont is.

I think it may also be the added width of the car, I'm pretty certain that the MS10 is quicker than the 80 at Monaco for that exact reason!

That's interesting. I never realized that. There are places I can use the 67 Brabham to good effect because of it's narrow track.

On the next straight I realised my wheel was no longer centered on the straights and was about 10 or 12 degrees off to the left. This was throwing me a bit in the fast left/right sections so I backed off a bit thinking I'd damaged the suspension.

My guess would be that you used a lot of opposite steering lock very quickly. It happens to me occasionally and it's usually after I make a rapid and forceful correction. I'm surprised you finished! You're tough! When that happens to me I rarely go much further.

Take care guys.
