Title: Annual JSMT get together.
Post by: EvilClive on May 28, 2019, 10:48:27 AM +0100
Most of you will know that each year we try and arrange a meeting at a suitable venue, where we can meet face to face with the people that we race with every week online.

The suggestion for this year is Brands Hatch ( again  ;) ) for the Superprix 29th-30th June  ( https://brandshatch.msv.com/BH-19-HSCC-SUPERPRIX )

We have done this event before and it is good value for money, with quite a few historic cars on track.
£30 for the weekend and free camping ( there are other accommodation options in the area for those of a delicate disposition  ;D ).
We can arrive on Friday to watch practice and watch all the action on Sat & Sun.
The camping is directly alongside the track and there is access to the restuarant/bars/toilets at the circuit.

HOWEVER. If anyone has a suggestion for something different it might not be too late to change if there is sufficient interest.

It is usual for Malcolm Shaw ( Joe Shaw's father ) to come and share a beer with us and present the JSMT Trophy to the winner. In the event that the winner cannot attend Malcolm will hold the Trophy for them.

Can all those who are likely to join us ( either for the whole weekend or just for a day ) post here so that we can get an idea of the size of the bar tab.
Also, if members are travelling from similar areas of the country it might be possible to share cars and transport costs.

UPDATE
Perhaps I should state that I intend to be there  ::). This fact might influence your decision  ;) ;)

Andy Livingston is also likely to be there for the weekend.

As some of you might know ( or maybe you don't ) I also race tintops over at UKGTL. It occurred to me that maybe we could extend an open invitation to anyone from that group who might feel like joining us?

I fully appreciate that this is the JSMT Trophy weekend, but we are all simracers and closet petrolheads, so if you have an opinion post it here.

Seduced by one of those new-fangled/modern racing experiences eh?  :)

Not so much "seduced", as trying to show them how superior GPL drivers are  ;).............but perhaps it would be better not to tell them that, as my master plan to win all races has developed a small flaw.  ::)

Are there any more likely attendees? The numbers are basically unlimited ( Brands Hatch can accommodate quite a few people!!).

I think Phil hinted that he might journey South??
Are there any others from 'oop North who might consider joining the party. If transport, to and from, is an issue, then posting here might mean that 2 or 3 can arrange a car share??

There are plenty of B&B options locally for those who are not fans of camping, even when the camping at the circuit is free  ;)

Currently I have that weekend free and would bring my caravan down from Manchester if the weekend remians free.

I'm now confirmed as being on parole for the weekend.
Debating whether to camp in the tent or the boot...
Depends on whether I can find a cheep single airbed and which car I take I guess..

Before I book - is anyone else considering a seat - Paddock Hill Grandstand is only £5 per person per day? Good view of the start / finish & I'm not getting any younger.

I considered it but unless there's a free bar I don't think of £75 as 'only'  ;D

Clive, do you want a lift in the 911 shooting brake/Turbo bastard? or are you sharing a car with Andy again?

A little puzzled by your "£75" figure Tim...the weekend ticket is £30 and a stand pass is £5??? Or am I missing something?

Maybe I'm confusing it with the other ticketed areas then?
I'm actually starting to get old, so I reserve the right to not actually read stuff properly!

At this stage it looks like  we have the following probable attendees...

Andy Livingston
Billy Nobrakes
Phil Thornton
Tim Muttram
Miner2049er (possibly with caravan.)
Myself

I am going to place a post on the general UKGTL forum and an open invitation to those guys to join us if they wish.

In response to Billy's query about stand passes. They appear to be the same price "on the day" as booking in advance, so I think we can play it by ear when we are there. Some might prefer to wander lonely as a cloud around Brands, whilst others might prefer to sit and watch the world go by?

I have made repeated attempts to raise a response from Malcolm Shaw, without success, but I will keep trying.

Andy and myself are planning to arrive Friday pm and leave for home after the last race on Sunday. From previous experience this event does not get very crowded and traffic is not an issue, just in case you were wondering.

Unless the weather makes a miraculous turn-around I shall be in the 'high-mobility-tent', trying out my new airbed.
I'm also planning on arriving late Friday afternoon - But I'll go home for lunch after finishing work so can't see me getting there much before 4 if at all.

Tim / Vosblod will be also be coming along. Our plan is to make an early start Saturday morning. As we are almost local shouldn't miss much. I ordered seats in the grandstand but don't expect to use them the whole day.

I notice that the weather appears to be making the previously mentioned miraculous turnaround.
And to such an extent I will be forced to bring my silly hat, factor 1 million suncream, and a car featuring working AC!

that's a shame, we were all planning to use your caravan when it rained  ;) But of course it won't be raining next weekend will it ???  ::)

Seriously, sorry you can't get there....maybe next time?  Andy Livingston and myself are booked to be "oop North" in September, as part of our Grand Tour of UK motor racing venues. If you are anywhere within reach of Aintree or 3 sisters maybe we can meet for a pie and a pint?

I thought that you had done the Northwest already!  I've now positioned myself to ambush you on the way to Croft.

That's a shame, it's not waterproof :)

maybe next time?

Hopefully, yes.

I am about 20 minutes from Three Sisters, so yes, let me know if you are there.

BTW, if you are thinking of doing a driving experience there, I would advise against it, it's a very short circuit and gets very crowded.

If you are going to Aintree, I'm sure you are aware of the Youtube channel Circuits of the Past, but the host of that channel was given a drive around the old circuit, including the bits that are no longer open or are now part of the grandstands.

Might be worth contacting them ahead of time.

Of course, Oulton Park is nearby too.

The only reason for visiting 3 Sisters, is that is a relatively well know, for various reasons, and as part of our Grand Tour of UK motor racing venues it was close to Aintree. I doubt that we will be gracing them with a demonstration of our driving abilities, but we might purchase a cup of tea  ::) Might try that Aintree connection and try to get the VIP tour  ;).

Andy and I are quite keen to meet up with any fellow simracers on our trips around the country. Oulton Park has been ticked off  ( it was wet!) and we were fortunate enough to meet up for an evening meal with Clive Loynes and the GPL legend that is Bernie Darwin ( Ok. so Clive is a legend too, but he gets so big headed about it  ::) ::) lol).
Bernie has retired from GPL on health grounds and I do miss his sense of humour and stories on the forum. His assertion that when he raced GPL he was in his unheated loft, sitting on a deckchair with the steering wheel on his lap. In cold weather he had gloves woolly hat and scarf......allegedly.

Our trip is planned for 6th Sept ( hotels are booked ), so I will post details closer to the date and maybe we can arrange a convivial evening somewhere.

Clive is right that Andy and myself have discussed Knockhill, but it is a long way to go for a single track ( all the way from the wilds of the South West ). But we might have to "bite the bullet" and do it.

Too late!! been there, done that!!  ;D  We slipped in under the radar and completed our mission undetected lol
But we are venturing to those wild lands again around Sep 6th...watch this space.

It will tick it off the list but there isn't much there. They do sell cups of tea though.

Might try that Aintree connection and try to get the VIP tour  ;).

I've a feeling it was a security guard who drove him round but it might be worth making an official enquiry beforehand.

Our trip is planned for 6th Sept ( hotels are booked ), so I will post details closer to the date and maybe we can arrange a convivial evening somewhere.

Where are you staying? I'll warn them.

We looked at the website for 3 Sisters, so we know it is a barn and a tarmac loop. But it has been mentioned by Clive Loynes, possibly from his karting days, so we felt obliged to include it  ;)

The only clue that I can give to our whereabouts, is that we are in a hotel and it is at Haydock  ::) So probably a Premier Inn?

The undecided part of the grand plan is to possibly do Anglesey, if the weather is good. There being no fun standing on the edge of a rainswept island and looking forward to a 4-5 hr drive home in wet clothes.  ;)

Haydock, if you were to be there, is even closer to me, and there is a good MIller and Carter for din dins nearby.
