Title: UKGTL Season 19 2019 Monday Summer Special's - Nürburgring - Jul 29

Qualifying: 20:25 (5 mins) Only one hot lap allowed
Race 1: 20:30 (14 laps)

Track: Nurburgring (Sprint) Standard GTL track

Cars allowed: Alfa Romeo GTA, Lotus Cortina, Mini Cooper S, Ford Falcon Sprint

Cars restrictions: Choose one make per race. You may not use the same make in Race's 1 and 2

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal
Pit stops: Not required

Server: simracing.org.uk Summer
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Note early race start time.

Tony, a suggestion. How about running these Nurburgring events in an evening setting. I remember a race we had many years ago, this one in fact:

https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4494#event1444

Where if you set it at the right start time as it gets darker the track lights come on, quite atmospheric. Probably would need testing to get the correct time & see if the race was long enough to make it happen.

I'll have a fiddle. It's either a race starting at 18:00 or 19:00.

EDIT: Not happened for me  :-\

No, me neither. Tested a few different time of day settings last night & nothing much seemed to change lighting wise. Probably best to ignore my suggestion then Tony.  ::)

Regarding the day/night thing, You can speed up time by going to the options/realism//daylight acceleration  button and adjust the time multiplier to make time speed up by 2x, 10x ect.  Works offline, don't know about online.  Seems like in the past it was done in some race I was involved in.

Just a thought

Doesn't work for online races tho  :(

You can only set time of day, not daylight acceleration.

R1 was good fun, pretty close racing the whole race.  R2 I kept discoing out.  Weird because the modem said everything was OK.  Sure hope those computer controled car drivers are better than the home PC equipment.  See you all at Zandy....

@ Fulvio - In Race 2, I hadn't realised we made contact at the chicane, I just noticed that you dropped a long way back, so assumed you had made an error and spun. Saw your "Thank you" message later and then assumed that I had hit you, so slowed and let you by.

Quit soon after as I had lost the love for GTL by this point.

Many thanks to Tony for organising this "fill in" series at short notice, and what a fun series it was!!!

Grats to Geoffers and Erling, who were generally in a different class of ability. But last night's finale was ( for me at least ) just about the most epic races I have enjoyed with UKGTL.

Race 1. After getting that V8 power down before T1, it was all about making the Falcon even wider than it appeared to be. Just to keep Geoffers' Mini behind me on the twisty bits, and then gaining a half second of breathing space on the straight, ready to park my tank on the apexes for the next slow section.
I think Geoffers took the only real chance that I granted him, when I got out of shape in one corner and as a result ran too deep into the next one, leaving the door open just a fraction. OK, but I thought I had kept Erling bottled up behind me until I had a moment of total brain fade and thought the race had finished, when in fact we had one more lap to go!!! So I backed off when I should have kept the V8 singing  :-\. Not too bothered about losing 2nd place as the whole race had been a blast in the Falcon  ;D.

Race 2 and I was having issues in qualifying with the Alpha and just could not get the gears right in time to post a lap time. So I started at the back behind Geoffers. OK a simple plan....follow Geoff through the pack.
Well it worked so well, that by the time I realised where we were, we were tailing Erling and JammerJon!!! Then there was a gap and Geoff slipped into 2nd......I think JJ pushed a little too hard to try and regain the place and lost the rear end of his Alpha and I was up to 3rd and still running with the lead pair.
Erling was doing a great job bottling up Geoff and I was able to close up and get involved in the action. The rest of the race was a tremendous battle where positions were swapped around...I think I might have had the lead at one point, but it was not for long and Geoff's Cortina slipped through. I could stay with his pace and felt that the 5 speed box in the Alpha gave me a slight advantage in some places, allowing me to draw alongside but never quite pass. Then I got a tank slapper at the top of the hill and lost a second or two to Geoff, allowing Erling to become a serious threat.
The last few laps were all about keeping Erling behind to roll in 2nd. But once again, it was not the finishing place, it was the intense racing between different cars that left the smile on my face.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yup, thanks to Tony for this little extra series.  Glad it's finished though, as two race nights a week really is more than I can cope with.

Didn't much look forward to last night's races; a blisteringly hot day at work had landed me a splitting headache.  Nothing to do but get on with the job.  The unexpected promising start to the series had given hope that maybe one championship could be pried from Geoffers' cold tentacles, but alas, he's like Mercedes, Ferrari & Red Bull all rolled into one, so it was never more than an illusion - best of the rest is the most anyone else can strive for  ;)

Race 1 and Geoff on pole.  Had hoped to get ahead at the start, but didn't happen. On the other hand, Clive undid us both in his tank and proceeded to hold up Geoff. Great, until he ran wide and let him through. Try as I might, I couldn't get him to extend me the same courtesy - not even a couple of broken lights persuaded him  :whistling:  On the penultimate lap, I knocked him into a spin - he was just so damn slow in the corners..  No real harm done, as both Geoffers & the chasing pack were far away, except to myself, as I lost out in the accel duel after waiting.  Start of the final lap, with Clive clear ahead, having most of my championship aspirations in his trunk, but then he suddenly slowed much more than anticipated before T1. Almost lost control while swerving to avoid him while braking.  Couldn't understand why he seemingly handed me the place, and if so, then why in such a risky manner, but got the explanation after the race.

With this, Geoffers & I were tied for points; whoever finished ahead of the other would run with the championship.  Having pole & Geoffers in the back would count for little, based on previous experience, and sure enough, one measly lap was all he needed to slice through the pack.  Kept him behind for a few laps, fighting tooth & nails, which was the highlight of the race.  Then Clive somehow got past Geoffers. Didn't succeed in keeping him at bay for long - had to brake later than late in this fighting, and a slight wobble was all he needed to get through.  Next lap Geoffers went past too.  Couldn't match the pace of either, so remainder of the race was basically a growing headache and a vanishing championship; not all that enjoyable  :-\

Grats to Geoffers on two wins and the series; grats to Clive for the other podiums.

A big "Thank you" Tony for spontaneously organizing this summer series  :thumbup1:

Not very successful though  ??? it was a funny one.

Again had my private fight against the cut warnings which let me loose motivation in Race 2 after I finished Race 1
in the pits serving a stop & go penalty  :P

Yes, two really good races, in fact this whole mini series has been great fun, something we could maybe repeat after Nappe's series has finished.

Being 2 points behind Erling before this event realistically meant I had to beat him in both races to take the championship. Thought about taking the Alfa in one race to give myself more of a chance, but where is the fun in that.  :nono:

So race 1 in the Mini was going to be the bigger challenge I thought & when Clive took the lead in the Falcon I was convinced that my chances had gone. Was going to be very difficult to get past & slowing me in the turns would let Erling's Cortina in with a chance on the straights. Fortunately Erling made a mistake early on which gave me some breathing space & before he had caught  back up Clive ran wide at T3 & I was able to nip past. Just built enough of a lead before the long straights to hold on in front & was then able to pull away to a relieved victory. :sweatdrop: Now equal on points with Erling.

Race 2 from the back was really intense. Quickly got up to 3rd & had a couple of laps dicing with Jammer before he disappeared to be replaced by the Evil One  :o. When I ran wide in T3 which messed up my line through T4 Clive was past  & with Erling out in front my championship chances were slipping away. However Clive was on a mission & he quickly reeled in Erling & dragged me with him. The rest of the race was epic, Clive managed to find a way past The Professor & a lap later I was able to get past too. 2nd would have been good enough but Clive did not seem quite as quick as in the early laps & was starting to hold me up a little & I was concerned Erling would get a second wind & come back at me. So I continued to push hard & found a way past Clive, he continued to harry my rear end (!) until the final lap when he made a mistake which gave me just enough gap to be comfortable.

Congrats to Erling & Clive on race & championship podiums.

And thanks to Tony for organising this short series. :notworthy:

Sorry Tony for the message, usually I stay silent, but I was disappointed by my slow start and later difficulty in getting past the cars ahead of me. I was very careful not to touch you in the slow part where I was faster and when I flew out at the chicane I pressed the chat without thinking. I immediately regretted and I am sorry that you stopped to wait for me and then loose interest.
Anyway, even it was the only race I could attended I had fun. Too bad I have problem with my shifter in race one that kept failing 5th here and there so after a couple of overrevving in neutral GTA engine popped  :'(
In race two I had a good qualy in the mini but all the world passed by at start and I ended ages from the podium after the early problems.
Ciao and thx Tony for organizing.

Big thanks Tony to organize this fill in series. :)

I hoped to join in some races, but calendar overlapped my other plans completely. Instead I drove ~4500 km in 13 days (from which 9 days were actual driving days to be honest), by visiting Nordkapp / North Cape in Norway. As I and my wife have driven so many times directly to the north, we decided this time go via west coast. That of course called for east frontier side drive to the south on way back and we ended up making "8 of Finland". :)

Here's the google map route to the north: https://goo.gl/maps/3nCT7YAnjDz3Qsp9A
and here's our way back to the south: https://goo.gl/maps/bY4jVxW7RKn4URrN6

...and yes, we did it that in our Yaris.

Well, this reminded me my trip to Nordkapp in 1979. exactly 40 years ago  :o, with my Alfasud 1.2 SW. 11000 km in one month from Trieste (Italy) through Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland (from Turku to north) and back through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Austria. Loved it  :-*

Sounds like epic journeys nappe & Fulvio!   I gotta do Nordkapp sometime, and would also love to drive the entire way down Italy and on to Sicily - in my 928, so fuel bills will send my wallet reeling...  :D

Well you can practice on Targa Florio track, road aren't much changed now in Sicily, apart the North Autobahn
Instead I saw that the road to Nordkapp is much better than it was in '79 when some roads over Artic Circle between Finland and Norway were still on beaten hearth...
