Season 35 – 1967 F1 – Round 2 – Hockenheim

The second race in the 1967 F1 series finds us at Hockenheim in Germany. The track was originally called "Dreieckskurs" (triangle course) and was built in 1932 using roads in the forest as an alternative to the Wildpark-Circuit in Karlsruhe. The track was used for motorcycle racing and was expanded to be used as test track for Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union in 1936. In 1938 the track was drastically shortened to 7.5 kilometres and it was renamed the "Kurpfalzring". This name was used until 1947 when the unchanged layout was renamed again to "Hockenheimring". This version of the circuit, which was used in 1955, consisted of the original two long straights, with the Ostkurve in the forest and the original hairpin inside Hockenheim joining them together. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

The race server (UKGPL4) is up on IGOR ready for you to check your connections (via IGOR or IP). I know a few people have been having trouble recently, please don't leave it until the race to find out if you have a problem.

Very surprised that there are no "Lap Records" listed with this announcement. I usually use those times as a guide to how quick ( or not) a competitive lap should be.
But am I right to think that we have only used Hockenheim for fun races over the last few years??? Even so I would have thought that somewhere in our archives there would be a few records?

Thanks guys.
I did not think that the layout had changed that much to affect the lap times, but maybe it has and I had not noticed  ;) Not so grateful for showing me that I need to be running 1:52's or 1:51's to be competitive !!! lol

The top times are very much "tow" times  ;)

We are racing the 67 layout without chicanes, you can't compare it with todays layout  ;D

I come very late( 5 mn to go !! ) whith no setup ferrari ....so ,whith 1 lap qualif ,and no setup for the race ( fuel ), I miss the start....unfortunatly, my pit box was after the S/F line, so I start whith 1 lap handicap !....so I know it's impossible mission to go back in front ...but just for funI decide to see till where I can go ....after few laps my engine blow up .....I was quite frustrated ....and do shift-r reflex !!....so I was on track and decide to race just for fun ...I hope to not disturb the other pilotes  and I think it was ok!....
I promess a better preparation for the next one ...

Apologies to Johnny and Phil for L1 T1 crash, my fault, I pressed brake pedal but nothing happened and hit Johnny and Phil during my aereo tonneau. Johnny had to retire on flame, while me and Phil could restart last  :-[
Soon after I gained some position cause T2 pileup and had a nice battle with Greg and Axel for a while. Some others misfortune gifted me a podium, even if I had thought that Tris was racing in 3rd position knowing he had lost a lap starting from pit, now he explained how it went.
Ciao

Corrected the race results to credit Tris with the first lap which GPL dropped because he started from the pit lane. However this will become a DQ because Works drivers are not allowed a shift-R.

Very enjoyable race for me. I qualified in 3rd place due to a clock smash. I think one of my laps was 4 seconds faster because of a bit of warp. I got a decent start so I didn't hold anyone up but I got clobbered by a flying Brabham in T1 and I ended up last (apart from Tris) so I ended up in my true qualifying place after all.  After that I had good battles with Fran, Ricardo and David culminating in a last lap side-by-side dice in the stadium section. Good clean racing, thanks Fran, Ricardo and David it was fun.

Sorry to see my new team mate Tim drop out (with engine trouble?) after setting a super pole time in the Honda!

Gratulations to all finishers and especially to the podium & Bastian for P1!

In my case I was to hasty at Ostkurve and tried to overtake on the outside which led to a contact with Bastian and my flewoff :(
Another unconcentrated to late braking two laps later at Nordkurve almost finished my car and brought a topspeed degrese of 35km/h -sh*t happens!

cu next time, back strong :)

With about ten minutes to go in qualifying, I was sitting 10th overall. That's about as well as I could ever expect to do with 17 cars ---Works/Privateers combined --- in the field. My problem was that there were at least five drivers behind me who have absolutely annihilated me at various tracks around the world in different leagues and seasons. I did the only sensible thing I could think of and that was to turn around and drive backward behind the pit to produce a DQ and grid myself in last place.

That strategy turned out to be completely useless with all the L1 crashes and off-course excursions, and at the beginning of L2 I found myself running 7th. In the next few laps I dropped a couple of places as Greg and Fulvio overtook me. But soon I was back in 6th, having overtaken slower cars. By L15 when Tristan finally caught me, the scoreboard was still showing him a lap down, and later on that lap when Axel crashed I found myself in 5th. And there I stayed for the remainder of the race, gradually losing ground to Greg but gaining ground on Eric.

It’s no secret that I’m one of the slowest drivers in the Privateer division, but the idea that I could hold off guys like Eduardo, Ricardo, and Eric --- guys who normally beat me like a rented mule --- for 20+ laps was not something I wanted to think about today. So I didn’t think about them at all. I simply concentrated on getting through Ostkurve each lap, reminding myself that it was probably no accident (so to speak) that it was today’s password.

Finally, as one of the five Americans who watches the Tour de France from start to finish every day, I want to give a shout out to Peter Sagan, the rider I want most to be like when I grow up. He isn’t the fastest rider in the field but he’s there at the end, nearly every day. And any day that I can finish just 12 seconds behind Greg Taber and on the same lap as the winner is one I won’t be complaining about for a millisecond.   :)

Thx Tim. I didn't feel the touch and tried to be as much on the inside line as possible.
I didn't watch the replay, just hope it was not my fault you went off.

After you vanished, it was a lonely race with tris also having problem no one competitive seems to have credits for a competitive car after monza. (which i sadly missed)

So it was just a concentration issue after a long day with many activities. Just angry that the usual backmarker does not give the racing line while lapping, even
fights for his "position" and endangers my race. but some people are allowed to do what they want...

Grats to fulvio for third and nice to see a big grid

I thought that a few tweaks to my setup for the Honda might have allowed me to compete for a podium place. I had dragged myself towards the front of the grid and starting in 4th place would allow me to pick up some slipstream, so everything was falling into place, until............................

With about 10 seconds left before the end of qualifying I had a screen freeze  :-\. I had to switch off my PC and reboot, but by the time I had GPL ready again, the race had started and I could not join the server. :(

That was an anti climax, to say the least.

grats to all podium places and finishers. I was seriously impressed with Phil's qually time in the Honda, but then he had to go and spoil the story by admitting that he had a clock smash lol. Next time keep it quiet Phil  ;)

I accept Fulvio apology.
I imagine he had problems because long straight lane does not have to risk the start.
a good idea is to leave the grid 20 x 20m between pilots, this helped a lot in GPLBrasil.

 Congrats podium!
