Title: UKGTL Season 20 Cobra -v- Corvette - Portland - Jan 6
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on December 12, 2019, 12:20:59 PM +0000
Championship Standings here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=771&theme=5)

Grid/server capacity: 20

RACE ONE

Practice: ~19:20 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:20 (10 mins) Drivers must not leave qualifying to change car make.
Race: 20:30 (20 laps)

Track: Portland 1970 Download this (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg81636#post_portland70)

Cars allowed: Chevrolet Corvette (Standard GTL cars, GTC-65), Shelby Cobra Download this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/v6okqqralftdbym/GameData.zip/file)

Car restrictions: Drivers must swop makes between races.

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: simracing.org.uk Mondays
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: None.

Tony, getting a CTD when trying to use the Cobra. Here is the trace file, seems to be some texture loading issue.

Which car # Geoffers or is it all of them?

I have tried 3 & they all do the same. Tried re-downloading & still no go.

Don't really know what to look for in the trace file, but I gather it is the last bit which is causing the problem.

I'll do some test now. I'm wondering why your trace file says there is a problem finding Cortina Sound files?

The Cobra has it's own sound files.

OK I have found the problem, but not the solution. When loading the Cobra it creates a file called vehgen.scn in the UserData/LOG folder which as my trace shows it cannot read. I can delete this file but when I load the Cobra again it creates a new one. I have tried it in other GTL installs & it does the same thing. However & this is where it is weird, I have one install which has odd graphics, the curser is large & the graphics very blurry suggesting I have not got the GTLConfig set right (although it is the same as the others!) & the car loads OK in that one. Very odd. Any ideas & does anyone else have the same problem.

OK a bit of searching reveals that there is a mesh or something missing which is only used on hi-res graphics, that is why it works OK on the lower resolution I have on the one install.

Hmm not sure your right. I was running my test with a resolution of 3840x2160 and everything works ok.

If you want, try this out: Shelby Cobra Pack Download this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/pk8owgpmd85xp9x/AC_Shelby_Cobra_260-289-289FIA-427Competition_v0_9_by_Merkava.7z/file)

The Cobra mod you have is part of this pack. Maybe see if the required Cobra works through this download.

If it does, it might mean that I have left out a vital file.

Ok Tony, error must be at my end then. Will try the other Cobra download later & see if that makes any difference.

Tried the alternative download Tony & it made no difference. However I have noticed that these cars are already in the download section here with a fix included for the problem I am having. Tried it & it works fine. Version here is v0.9.1.0, the one you linked to is v0.9.0.0. Seems I am running on low graphical settings!

How did you get the download here (the one with the fix) to work?

It's only showing the old Amazon link which is now defunct.

I'll ask Dave to put on the Google download.

EDIT: I've just found a BIK set which I need to test before I re-issue the download.

Also found info about your error. It's caused by some bad script (relating to GTR2 only) in the two .cas files.

If you remove

 <NOTSPIN><DASHHIGH> Instance=RAINSCREEN
<NOTSPIN><DASHHIGH> {
<NOTSPIN><DASHHIGH> Moveable=True
<NOTSPIN><DASHHIGH> MeshFile=AC_COBRA_rainscreen.gmt CollTarget=False HATTarget=False LODIn=(0.0) LODOut=(1.5)
<NOTSPIN><DASHHIGH> }

That should fix your original problem.

If you can tell me if your working cobra still has these line in it's .cas files that would help a lot.

I installed the Cobra onto a fairly standard GTL, and it works fine.
Maybe on one of my more modded ones it may not

First I already had the v0.9.1.0 download on my external HD from when we had used it some years ago, so no I did not actually download it from the download section today.

I have checked the CAS files, AC_COBRA.CAS has those lines, AC_COBRA_2DW.CAS does not. The 2DW one appears to be the updated one as it has a 2011 date, the other is dated 2009.

Well your trace file says it's the AC_COBRA.CAS that is the problem

vehgfx.cpp   2520: Entered VehGraphics::Init(GAMEDATA\TEAMS\GTC-65\AC SHELBY COBRA 289\#11 HOLMAN & MOODY 1963\..\AC_COBRA.CAS)

So I will remove the bad lines from both.

Can you give it a try. It's Ok to let it overwrite what you already have.

OP has been updated too.

Car seems to work OK now Tony. However I have had some more problems which I think I have sorted that I suspect is related to the latest Windows 7 update earlier last week.

Firstly it was taking an age for the PC to recognise that my wheel was connected, Logitech Gaming software would tell me that it could not detect any controllers, then after about 5 minutes the wheel would suddenly spring into life & work OK. As it was OK before the Win7 update I was suspicious that may be the cause, so I restored Windows to a point before the update & hey presto the wheel connects straight away again.

Then today I fire up my SROUK GTL install to try your new Cobra download & all the add-on tracks do not show up in the track list, just blank spaces where they should be, hover the curser over the blank spaces & the track names show as gobbledigook. Not only that but default tracks do not load correctly even with default cars usually causing a CTD. New Cobra download works OK in other GTL installs which it crashed before so not that causing the problem. Eventually after deleting all the tracks & copying them across from a working GTL install all seems fine again. Weird!

I often wonder if updates to Windows deliberately introduce problems & slow your PC down to persuade you to upgrade to the latest version. Anyway my current PC is 7 years old now, so perhaps it is time to replace it.

I couldn't drive these Trumptrucks (*) if my life literally depended on it. The Corvette is simply a nightmare with such gargantuan understeer no matter what I try or do the MSC Gülsün (**) would laugh at this car.  Obviously it can be driven with speed but how has eluded me from the day I first installed GTL. On top of that something weird happened where I hit Tony according to the replay but I don't think Tony's car was actually anywhere near me. Apologies if I'm misinterpreting the replay, Tony. Car was buggered and I prefer to drive without damage even if it means a 3 minute repair.

Okay, I'm exaggerating about US cars in general because I have had fun races with Cobra's in the past. It didn't look like that was going to be the case as at first its handling was even worse than the Vette. In an attempt to improve the atrocious braking I pulled the front bias all the way to 65 just hoping to start from there. Imagine my surprise when not only the braking was sorted but the general behaviour of the car!  :o ??? See, this is why setup drives me insane. What has brake bias to do with the behaviour of a car in corners where you don't even brake? Aaaaaarrgggh.
Anyway, after a completely uncalled for visit in the grass I was left chasing Eifel. But some time later he disappeared of the grid alas. Next up was Tony and while I had no ambition of catching up, at least putting some pressure seemed feasible. Leave it to me, just as I was getting within 5 seconds of him to check for lappers while still accelerating in a corner ending in a double pirouette and the abandonment of all hope in ending my Last-of-the-Bunch streak.

Congrats to the podia and to everyone who drives US cars better than me. Which is...Everybody.  ::)

(*) actually not meant to be political but how could I resist the Dump/Trump pun?

2 good races getting in Erling's way  ::) due to others having issues

Race 1 I was just driving my lines as best I could with the wayward Vette, and waiting to be passed, and eventually
he got one in with no contact and made it stick.

Race 2 I managed to stay in front as the Cobra is easier to be consistant with, for me anyway.

Yeh, come on you aliens give us a setup.  ;D

Ok, I get the message, I will upload mine later, but only to be viewed by those that are struggling, not those who couldn't negotiate the first corner.   :whistling:

Couple of successful but lonelyish races, although it may have been a little different had Erling not failed to get around T1 (twice) & Clive not spun after taking the lead in the first race.

Congrats to Matt & Erling on their two podiums.   Good recovery drives from Erling in both races.

Setups uploaded to Portland folder, look for 'Cobra 289' & 'Corvette C2'.

Those who couldn't negotiate the first corner obviously WERE struggling...  ;D

Looked in the forum yesterday, scratching my head over Geoffers & Tony discussing download of cars - "Hey, we're using the standard ones, right?".  That was my first blunder; not reading the race setup thoroughly enough - had practiced with the standard GTL big block Cobra  ::)   Just had about 45 minutes to download the right one, practice and cobble together a setup.

Race 1:
Chuffed of course to be 2nd on grid, and not a little surprised - historically I've been quite useless in Cobras. Great start (thanks again Geoffers), but my screwups have apparently moved from the start itself, to the first corner instead. Slid off and had to let the entire field pass..  ::)   Quickly regained places, some from other cars going off.  Made it as far as 3rd, behind Matt, and then the party ended. Had nothing on him under power, and couldn't exploit my advantages under braking & cornering, as he stuck to the racing line. Tried outside moves, inside moves, but nothing worked (apologies for the paint exchange..  :whistling:).  Finally the slightest of wobble from Matt in the final corner, and I got alongside him. Mad drag race down the start/finish. Whoever blinked first would lose out. Thankfully it was Matt, who had to brake a fraction earlier. By then, Geoffers was long gone, so main concern was to stay ahead of Matt and not screw up over the final laps.

Race 2:
Great start again - and a complete repeat at the first corner - apart from bashing the barrier this time ::)  Rejoined not quite last, but then went off again in the following corner, and then I was last again..  Worked my way up to 4th - thanks to Tony for waving me past, and then it got quite lonely. Gap to 3rd remained around 8-9 secs for many laps, but then started dropping.  Couldn't believe it when it seemed like it was Matt I was catching (not again!)  Thought he would have the advantage, now that we had swapped cars.  However, before I could get any closer, Clive heroically threw himself into the fray.  We were in the same car, but with his usual flamboyant style, his tyres were probably worse than my less than pristine ones. An unconventional move and I was past (read 75% out of control, sliding through T1, picking up at least one cut warning  :whistling:)  Couldn't catch Matt though, before the race ended.

Grats to Geoffers on a commanding performance, and to Matt for his podiums!!

Dilemma for me whether to continue or not, as two series a week is really too much. If I can do this one with a minimum of practice (3-4 hours per car Clive  ;D), then I might try to fit it in.

With regards to setups, I doubt anyone would find mine better than their own.

Grats to Geoffers, Matt and Erling on making the podiums ( although placings were slightly different  ;) )

I only got around to downloading the series stuff from the race post and setting up a dedicated GTL install late in the afternoon, so there was very little time for practice or setups.
Race 1 started well in the Cobra until I did an "Erling" into T1 on Lap 2 after slipping into the lead when he demonstrated that move on Lap 1  :-\ Spinning was bad enough, but I also stalled the engine and had to watch the whole field stream past  >:(
The chase back through the field was great fun, but was hampered by a nudge on Rog's rear that obliged me to wait for many precious seconds. My fault so I can't complain.
Race 2 was OK 'ish in the Corvette until the setup digested the tyres with 5 laps still to go and my race fell apart!!  :-\

I took a flyer with the Cobra setup and adjusted dampers/diff/gears and toe, somehow arranging for the car to behave in a way that I liked. Regrettably the same pattern of adjustments did not work so well for the Corvette.  Where the Cobra turned in and was predictable with power on oversteer, the Corvette appeared to have DNA more akin to a super tanker  :-\ The Cobra was not only quicker but more gentle on it's tyres, whereas the Corvette consumed all the rubber by lap 15. That car will require some work!!
I will upload my Cobra setup later if anyone wants to try it, but I will put the Corvette setup where it belongs..in a deep dark hole!!

Thanks Tony for another big yank V8 series, I do like all that power  ;)
