Title: UKGTL Car Skins - official instructions
Post by: Dave 'Gizmo' Gymer on June 25, 2006, 03:14:11 PM +0100
We have now published the first official UKGTL Skinning Instructions (https://www.simracing.org.uk/downloads/UKGTL-Skinning-Instructions.zip).

If you would like to used skinned cars in the UKGTL Ladder, please download and read the above instructions, and then post links to your finished skins in this thread. Please do not PM them to me! Please make sure that they pass the checklist in the instructions before posting here!

You do not need to package the files as a ModMan archive, since I will be repackaging them as a collection anyway.

We will be producing regular updates to the pack; continue to post new skins and updates in this thread; I shall post new deadlines from time to time.

Thread locked while I build pack version 1.0.

For the most part the instructions have been followed closely. I've only had to take out 3 files: the GT40 wheels (which Matt told me about up front), and .aud files from Minton's Alfa and Elan.

Okay, the pack is now available from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=27). Any skins posted now will go into the first refresh in a few weeks.

If the number of skins grows significantly I will split the pack up by class. Right now it's not large enough to warrant doing that.

I'd like us to use the Ladder race on Thursday as the pack's first outing, unless there are objections. I'll post something in that race's announcement thread about it.

Can someone clarify something for me please?

I've got a range of 76 skins I'd like to include in the pack for the NGTL. Currently 4 or 5 cars with each members name on the window. I think the instructions may not allow this though in that there is one skin for each type of car alone.

So, for example; I would like the NGTL 911 to be available with a unique number for each driver. 200812 for Don, 200832 for Mark, 200852 for me and 200872 for Pops. I'd move on to 200813, 200833, 200853, 200873 for the Escort, and 200814, 200834 etc for the Capri.

I suspect what is required though is just one skin for all drivers, with all drivers using the same car design on a track should they all have made the same choice of car. I.e. one 911 numbered 200810, one Escort numbered 200811, one Capri numbered 200812 etc...

Correct?

Correct?

Correct.

The GTR skins use a disproportionate amount of SRou's bandwidth so we've made this 'one skin per car model' rule to keep the size of the pack down.

I love the driver names on the windows but that rule also keeps my overheads down, so no big deal  ;)

NGTL 76 Skins are finished. An Escort, both BMW's, a 911 and a Capri. Essentially the same as the skins done a while back and mentioned in this thread (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=908.0) except for the inclusion of the simracing banner and number decal on the doors.

I don't have huge bandwidth Dave so I'll PM you a link to the zip with all of it in (8Mb) in a sec. Ta.

Just completed an TC Alfa for the NGTL.

It's here (http://www.mysharefile.com/v/8552440/NGTL_TC_Alfa.rar.html).

Sadly, that'll be the last skin for us for a good while as I won't have the time in the coming weeks. Just a FYI incase you're considering another GTL skin pack release. Cheers.

Right, time to set a deadline for the first update.

Sticking a wet finger in the air and generating a random number...

Skins must be posted before Saturday 22nd July (ie. by midnight at the end of Friday 21st).

Are there instructions as to how to upload cars for the Skin Pack

If you haven't got your own webspace to upload to you can use one of the many free web sharing sites, eg. http://www.mysharefile.com/, http://www.4shared.com/, http://www.box.net/.

Not scheduled at the moment - I need to accumulate enough new or updated cars to make it worth issuing an update.

PS Is there a way to get a picture of the cars on to our website/blog thingy or do I need some special programme

Hmm - Print Screen key and paste into Paint? Or does GTL have a proper screen capture key? F12? Anyone?

F12 does screengrabs when on track or in replay. The files are saved into the root of your GTL folder.

If you ask really nicely I could do a render if Gizmo sends me the body and windows ultra res DDS files (as TGA preferably).

Oilseal - you need to choose which design you actually want to use. Each team can only have one skin per car model - otherwise NGT Legends will attempt to bury us under vast numbers of skins. :P :hammer:

Good design though, nice and clean but distinctive.

Hi Dave

Use the one in the render. Its got our kids name on it but he's fastest so no probs.

Glad you like the paint job. All the kudos goes to MaddRip. I think he has done a superb job. I'll be uploading the 906 next and when Madd gets back from Florida he is going to do the Cortina.

As a non painting person what prog should be used for the painting. It'll probably be some mega priced super software. Just fancied having a go myself sometime

I swear by Photoshop CS2.

I also use PSP on the odd occasion for really simple stuff, but imho you can't go wrong with Photoshop. It's not really a beginners tool but I've self-taught myself with trial and error and really love it now.

Please don't paint cars you don't intend to use - it takes time and effort to check them and put the pack together and uses up a not insignificant amount of bandwidth too.

Too rushed I'm afraid. The directory name being wrong I could've corrected but the lack of textures in both sizes and the fact they aren't packed into GTL files means it'll have to wait until the next update I'm afraid. :(

New pack will be out later this afternoon.

Deadline for getting a skin into version 1.3 of the pack will be the end of December 23rd. That gives me Grotmas Eve to put the pack together.

All seem to be okay now. I take it I can now remove your old privateer Capri, Healey, Escort and GT40?

I can't seem to get my Icons or .bik file to work.

Everything is named in unison, and the Icons are TGA files, and the Bik file is well... a .bik file. But in game the Icon is always just blank with a lock image in the bottom, and now after trying to fix it, the bik file went from the Schnitzer BMW to a black AC Cobra?????

I have no idea what I could be doing wrong for the icons and bik, I read the instructions on how to make them etc, and they're just not wanting to work for me :/

Hmm, is it possible you've got a car number clash or perhaps the TGAs are in the wrong format?

Does the skin show up ok? If so I'd say the naming of the icons is wrong somewhere, as is the bik.file

This is what they should look like

the skin in game shows up perfectly fine.

To make sure I wasn't typing anything wrong, I basically just Copy/pasted it all :(

The server has now been updated with version 1.3 of the UKGTL Skin Pack and is available for testing against the Brands Hatch GP and Indy circuits also available from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=27).

The numbering is wrong; it should be 179400, not 1100794.

Also the CPIT_ULTRA_TEX.gtl file hasn't had the textures inside renamed so they won't work right. Ditto four of the six textures in the TEX.gtl file, along with a rogue texture in ULTRA_TEX.gtl. AFAICT everything else was okay.

Your ducks must be back out of line again. Check that the .GTL texture archives and all the files inside them are correctly named with the updated number, and the .CAR file has also been changed to match.

We ought to do the post-Season 2/pre-Season 3 update using the same method as UKGTR, ie. some skin checkers to buffer things before I get them.

I've updated the instructions (see the first post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1768.msg26620#msg26620)) to correct the value of Locked in the main text (good spot, Morten) and also to allow internal windscreen banners now that we're going to host the pack off-site, making size slightly less of an issue.

BTW, if anyone has skins in the current pack which they no longer need, for example because they've joined or moved to a new a team, please speak up so that I can remove them.

When does Season 2 end?

Assuming no more server outages, it should end July 19th.
