Title: UKGPL Season 36 (2020) 1955 GP - Spa - Feb 9
Post by: Phil Thornton on February 03, 2020, 09:49:38 PM +0000
Season 36 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 2 – Spa-Francorchamps

The second race in the 1955 Grand Prix series sees us remaining in Belgium with just a short hop to Spa-Francorchamps. Designed in 1920 the original triangle-shaped course used public roads between the Belgian towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot. The track was intended to have hosted its inaugural race in August 1921, however the first car race was held at the circuit in 1922. Spa was the fastest road circuit in Europe at the time, and it had a nasty reputation for being dangerous and very fast- it was a circuit known to be one for the brave, and most drivers were frightened of it. The old Spa circuit was unique in that speeds were consistently high with hardly any let-up at all for 3–4 minutes. This made it an extraordinarily difficult mental challenge (& ridiculously easy to crash)..

I hope your friend is OK JonnyO. Real life is always more important than GPL but it would be great if you can make the race  :thumbup2:

Sorry Francesco and all for T1 crash, but there was a little glimps by your car and even I was very cautious I touched you and so on... :(
Later I blew my engine at 4 lap even if I didn't overrev, but I suspect the T1 crash had brought some damage.
Ciao

I've never seen so many blown engines.

The clockwork on my Gordini packed up just after Les Combes on lap 1!

I have added results to GPLWeekly.

Good race for me, enjoyed a close battle with Dulima. We gave each other room and swapped places a few times. Difficult to do safely in these cars.

Clive I notice you turned up late and missed starting a qually lap by 10 seconds. Pity about your engine too. Hopefully, that is 2 bits of bad luck over in one race ;).

Sorry to see your engine pack up Axel but at least you made it half way to bag some decent points.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

I also had frame problems at the beginning, I think he was the big cause of the big one

The hands went apart and I saw Phill approaching back to back.

He passed me but I managed to stay close to him, the rest of the race, it was a great battle, very clean

I reached it with the help of the vacuum  and at the end of the last corner, it was there that, during the whole battle, I was thinking of pouting

So, in the end, I took a chance and ran out of brakes, thank god i didn't take Phill out of the race, I hit him and he didn't roll over, it would be a sad ending for both of us.

I returned the position that was rightfully his and cross the finish line.

Congratulations Greg for the victory and congratulations to the podium, Jonny had a great result with Gordini

GPL in the vein, see you next time!

Grats to the podium and all who made it to the finish, it looks like the GPL gremlins were on a bonus for this race?? So many engine failures  :-\

I was a little disappointed to see Clive Loynes arrive at the party a little late, but I suspect that real life was intervening and being the experienced and cunning protagonist that he is he played a tactical card to get his "starting money".  ;)
I had anticipated that Mr L would be running the W196 and looking for revenge for Zolder, so I actually spent a little time doing some offline practice for this race in the Lancia. That worked well in quali, where I almost went sub 4:00 without any slipstream, but the plan fizzled out in the race after 2 laps with a smoking engine  :(. I was looking forward to enjoying some slipstream in the race and possibly knocking 3-4 secs off that time, but that did not happen.
I had resigned myself to this race being a slipstream festival, where any places and points would be decided on the last lap. I did remember to save my race replay and I think I gave my engine a nudge towards oblivion on lap 1, with one bad downshift and maybe a couple of acceleration points where I was spinning the rear wheels and got too close to the 8500 rev limit....lesson learned hopefully  ::)
This old Spa circuit is great because it highlights the insane speed of these old cars, but IMHO it does not have enough braking zones to force some management of the brake fade. I had all the brakes I needed for stopping at La Source, with enough left over for a dab into Eau Rouge and then time to recover for Les Coombes. After that there are no brakes needed until La Source again, just keep your right foot planted on the go pedal  ;D
Well done to my Blue Moose teammate Doni, for keeping it together for 2nd place  :thumbup1:

........a big nightmare.my memory stick failed and i could only run with it!
it would be impossible without the F10 feature, because the glass has become a non-transparent plate.

I just wanted to give the race background a bit of showiness with some photos that take you to the context of those years ... it's easy ... I have located a photo and uploaded it to my own ftp server ... then you just have to link the image to the forum  ;)

I was expecting at attack at that point so I took a very wide line to give you space (I'm not sure I would of had the lock to get around the hairpin if I had taken the inside line) but it is very difficult to judge such a critical braking point in these cars. So if you had pulled it off it would have been a move worthy of a podium place.

Thank you, very nice gesture. I nearly got stuck on a invisible wall that sticks out at the exit of the hairpin. Thankfully I could reverse off it!

I don't know if UKGPL has the possibility to upload images ...
If you have a web space ... you can usually access by ftp (file transfer protocol) ... upload your images and access them via its url in the form http://example.com/blabla.jpg

(Sorry for the OFF topic)  ;)

You can't copy + paste a picture in the answer!
you need a hoster of pictures like (https://www.bilder-upload.eu) who gives you an url

Congrats Doni and Phil!

That was unexpected. I thought I might use the slipstream to stay with the leaders. I didn't expect to win. I did drive good. My mistakes were few and small. My apologies for the bump at La Source, Axel.

I'm glad to see Doni drive a good car. He often does like JonnyO did this race. Doni was doing 175 mph in the tow. :)

plan fizzled out in the race after 2 laps with a smoking engine

When the engine went pop ( more of a pfuft! )

From my perspective it was much more impressive than that. I was covered in fire, smoke, and car parts. Axel's demise wasn't so spectacular. It's a shame you two didn't make it further.

Probably had nothing to do with the little red car that I was sticking pins in!

:) Did it have 3 points like the trident I was using?

Thanks for the fun guys. Be careful with your speed shifts next time.

A well-deserved victory for Greg.  Great pace and skill that I just couldn't quite match.  Well done, GT.

A lucky P2 pour moi as both Evil and Axel fell to engine woes in the Lancias.  I'd be checking the warranty on those puppies.

Phil a fine P3 after a stirring duel with Dulima that wasn't settled til La Source on the last lap.  Good stuff there, gents.

The early laps were just a matter of hanging onto Evil, Axel and Greg in the slipstream.  This was relatively easy to do and indeed, when Axel's Lancia called it quits, Greg was left alone in the lead on the Masta and I sailed by like he dropped an anchor.  Later in the lap going up the hill after La Carriere, his exit speed there was substantially higher than mine and he retook the lead.  From there to the next lap on the Masta, he inched away to the point where catching the breeze off his Maser wasn't possible.  The tow was broken.  I settled into a comfy pace letting Greg streak away being content with P2 after the shambles of Zolder.
