Title: UKGPL Season 36 (2020) 1969 F1 - Laguna Seca - Mar 3
Post by: Cookie on March 01, 2020, 12:56:19 PM +0000
Season 36 - 69x Trophy – Round 4 - Laguna Seca 67

For the next round of the season 36 we go to Laguna Seca, a paved road racing track in central California used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, built in 1957 near both Salinas and Monterey, California, United States.
The racetrack is 2.238 miles (3.602 km) long, with a 180 feet (55 m) elevation change. Its eleven turns are highlighted by the circuit's signature turn, the downhill-plunging "Corkscrew" at Turns 8 and 8A. A variety of racing, exhibition, and entertainment events are held at the raceway, ranging from superkarts to sports car racing to music festivals. The name Laguna Seca is Spanish for "dry lagoon": the area where the track now lies was once a lake, and the course was built around the dry lake bed.

Good result for me in the old BT20. I think I drove fairly and cleanly apart from my spin at the corkscrew which resulted in Andreas hitting me and crashing out of the race. Sorry about that, I was very lucky and somersaulted back onto my wheels with no apparent damage. Sadly you were left upside down.  I pressed on as fast as I could to build a gap to put pressure on the cars behind which seemed to work because they all got close but made minor errors and dropped back. It is tough to pass cleanly here. I was pleased with my pass on Fran at the corkscrew, a clean move but right on the limit! I managed to keep out of the way of the leaders when being lapped, that took some concentration.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Except for the 1st lap, it was a race where I saw no other car ...

The four, then three and finally two leaders were too quick from me and quickly disappeared from my view.
And the cars following me had early troubles or were too slow (Phil with the BT20, what an idea !!)

For the junior championship, I hoped Paul and Francesco could finish before Phil    but they had troubles too.

Grats Tristan and Fulvio, nice race Phil with your old car.

Phil slipped me at cork but without incident i was immediately behind with some chance to attack.Unfortunately the things went differently.
But could be that Francesco,Phil and Paul finish in front of Dave

Of course, this is a possibility ...but at this moment, Phil is my only opponent for the junior championship.
I know there are still 6 races and things could quickly change.

The BRM could be fragile if you are not enought carrefull whith trottle and clutch ....I burn 2 engines in qualifs so I was carrefull about rp/m and red zone ....Clive was faster , not mutch but enought why I can only follow.... I do a first error at the entry of the corkscrew  before the explosion of his engine at lap 10 ...my second error was when I hit Paul at the breaking of corkscrew ....( very sorry mate ! :/ ...maby you slow down to let me pass on the left ?... happyly you can continue :) )...when I come back on track, I spinn in the haieballs and I take me long time to find the way out ....lost 3 places !...rest of the race was trying to recover the lead ....whith all the DNF , it was not very difficult but sade to don't have more drivers in this serie!
THXall & org.....cu next one ;)

It could have ended in disaster with profuse apologies from me but thankfully I managed to get it right. In hindsight it was risky move to make but passing here is very tough so when the opportunity was there I had to take it. The Junior championship is very tight, hopefully it will be a close 4 way fight all the way to the last round. More fun that way ;D

Incidentally, I'm not planning to take the BT20 again this season  :wheelchair:

Don't forget we have to discard the 2 worst results.

Where do you live in Italy ?

Is Lombardy but,for the moment, around Como there are only 5 case of corona virus. Anyway is better to be carefully.
Ginetto, one of the major producer of tracks for gpl, lives in a dangerous zone near Bergamo

Hi All,

Not to bad a race for me.  had a chance for a little practice, which helped learn the cicuit and try to dial in a couple of cars

Brabham and Cooper seemed as thought they would suit. the cooper having been the care i drove the most many moons ago. But Ferrari felt good and so far has proved to be reliable for me with no engine blow ups etc so far.

everyone as usual seemed so much faster than me but in the end it turned out OK. managed a finish for some points and had a good few great laps chasing Francesco, who drove really well all the race.

Had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed myself.  was doing quite well towards the end of the race because due I think to a few other cars having offs or spins I had moved up a few spaces... but the faster boys stormed past with about a lap to spare.

I did think to drive as hard as possible as it was close to the finish, but experience tells me that it better to finish than crash and burn.. LOL!!

I had tried to be as competative as possible, and Im very happy with my progress this first season back, but did have a little incident with David I think ???; which he has mentioned, Im sorry mate but I was as you say trying to get out of your way and move over as much as possible, I couldnt decided what was best at the time because I always try (as we all do!) to leave room for any approaching fast cars, but as you came up on me fast in the Corkscrew I was a bit hesitant.

so if I was in the way... sorry mate. It didnt cause me much of a problem as my car seemed OK. hope i didnt slow you up too much?

but all in all a good race and some very enjoyable laps of GPL racing..

till the next time.. A la prochaine...

Paul

You live in a very beautiful part of the world Fran, close to the ski slopes and Monza. What could be better? Stay safe and keep away from the corona virus. Air travel has not been affected in GPL world so you should be able to book a flight to the Bahamas on Sunday

Como and its lake is a very nice place.
I was there (in Menaggio) on holidays during the football world cup 2006 (...Zidane vs Materazzi)  :)
Old city of Bergamo is very nice too.

Hi David,

Sorry .. I think it was Tristan.

I made a mistake.   so if Tristan reads this or my previous post he will know I have apologised .

In Rambouillet, little city at 50 km south-west from Paris and 30 km from Versailles.
Not far from Guyancourt where the Prost Grand Prix team was between 1998 and begin 2002.
