Title: Brands Hatch Indy - Formula Easter test race 2. Weds 8th April
Post by: FullMetalGasket on April 01, 2020, 09:46:03 PM +0100
Following on from a suggestion made in the first test race we'll be granting Visa's to allow the Formula Easters into Kent for a demonstration run.
This time the entire field will be available - can I ask that you all nominate a car/chassis by Tuesday so I can ensure the server has the correct number of each on it :) Until then It'll have as many as possible of each variant. (If possible please try and drive something different to last time - otherwise I'm not learning :P)

All the cars can be seen a few posts down. Pick one you like the look of and have fun setting them up!

Hi FMG,

Which car would you recommend that has a good default setup? I am not much good at making setup changes

For me the Avia is best of of the box. But we proved very well in the last race when I shared my setup, that my idea of a good one doesn't suit anyone else  ;D

In.

Wont have time to test anything till next week though...

edit: Tim, if you want to give me whatever car you're taking to make it easy for server setup that's fine with me ???

I was going to pick something that was unpopular for the sake of variety - so I won't know till tuesday!
Performance wise they're pretty close to identical once setup - pick what ever you think is pretty ;)

In that case I'll wing it and take a RAF80, its so retro futuristic  ;D

Server is now set and up! 8)

For those of you who don't want to wade through AC's infomation screens, here are the cars:

Avia AE2:

(https://i.postimg.cc/XZvXW1Nv/Avia-AE2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XZvXW1Nv)

A Czech Formula Easter chassis handmade by it's original driver, despite this it saw a fair degree of success.
Uses Lada 1300cc engine and 4 speed Wartburg gearbox.

Estonia 20:

(https://i.postimg.cc/NKB5JfWm/Estonia-20.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NKB5JfWm)

Estonian design, very popular in the early 80's with several drivers recording success.
Uses Lada 1300cc motor coupled with a 4 speed ZAZ gearbox.

Estonia 21:

(https://i.postimg.cc/94N0QPzY/Estonia-21.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/94N0QPzY)

Successor to the 20, possibly the first ground effects car in Eastern Europe - based on a Lotus 81. Also recorded a fair amount of success.
Uses 1300cc Lada engine and a 5 speed ZAZ gearbox (this is less useful than you might think ;) )

Melkus MT77-2:

(https://i.postimg.cc/rdbyk8Yh/Melkus-MT77-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rdbyk8Yh)

An East German design, the most basic - but also most successful - car from East Germany in the Friendship cup.
Uses a Lada 1300cc engine with a 4 speed Wartburg 311 transmission.

MTX1-03b/c:

(https://i.postimg.cc/4Yfxv291/MTX1-03bc.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4Yfxv291)

A Czech design - you all know them from the previous race ;) Cars were sold all over Eastern Europe for competition.
Uses Lada 1300cc Engine and unknown 4 speed gearbox.

MTX1-06:

(https://i.postimg.cc/ykzdx86t/MTX1-06-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ykzdx86t)

Replacement for the 1-03 and based heavily on the experimental 1-04 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTX_(automobile)#/media/File:MTX_1-04_KIN_PROJEKT_at_Legendy_2018_in_Prague.jpg). Despite a lighter chassis and proper aerodynamic research, it did not have any real advantage over the competition.
Uses Lada 1300cc engine and unknown 4 speed gearbox as with the MTX1-03.

RAF80:

(https://i.postimg.cc/R6k0cM73/RAF80.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/R6k0cM73)

Another Czech design, this also has limited ground effects and won the coveted 'most angular' award for soviet racecars in the early 80's :whistling:
Engine and gearbox not known - but 1300cc and 4 gears is what you get!

My best advice is pick something you like the look of and have a go in it - they will respond to setup changes, but if you realy don't like how it drives pick something else that looks good to you. Hopefully this way we'll get a nice varied grid 8)

I've asked Juriks permission - if he says yes then I'll create a single RAR for this race and the season.
If not then you'll have to do them individually I'm afraid.

Either way, you can probably do them before I can make a pack!

If I remember the file structure right - you only need to extract the car folder from each download anyway.

Can I have some setup advice?
I've attached a pic of tire temps.
How do you guys determine what is a good tire pressure settings?
Is the tick part in the middle being in green most important? Or do you check for pressure numbers after a few laps? I think I saw in chat someone mention the tires pressures should be 28psi or something like it, after they have been warmed up. It was with some other cars as well, so I don't know if 28 would be a universal number.
I had my avia tire temps as 15psi in the setup screen, and while running the tires would go from blue to green in that onscreen setting, while psi number stayed blue
Then I upped the temps in setup screen to 17psi, and now the right side tires were not getting as green while running (lighter shade of green) but I saw the psi numbers were green(around 26psi), and I found half a second, and was generally quicker.
Is it a balance between the two settings? What if can't get the tick part on the screen to green, but the numbers are in the green (opposite of what I initially had with avia)?

I think, in first you need have a correct tires pressure (green number when you are driving). And this is, of course, not a universal value. For deteminate the correct value, using the APP, I set it for be green with hot tires.
About tires temp., suspensions setup can be help to have the correct temperatures.

On Avia I have 20 psi - 20 psi in front and 17 psi-18 psi on rear, cold. It is around 25 psi hot.

Tire pressure is more important than temp as Fabri says.
For setting my own pressures I use an app called Protires - you can find it HERE (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/protyres.14030/) on race department.
It does the same things as the standard app, but better.
To work with addon cars you'll need the LUT packs, either the stupidly big version containing everything or rummage through the google drive link like I do and just grab the cars you use - both these options can be found here: https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/protyres-ini-lut-pack.18088/
 (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/protyres-ini-lut-pack.18088/)
From memory, these run at 26psi (hot). Although I've been playing with setups in the Estonia 21 recently and it uses different tires to most other cars.

As already said, you can then control temp through further playing with alignment and suspension settings.

Jurik has given me permission to put all of the files into one RAR, so those who haven't got the cars yet can do so here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/n9ulop5f6pyjen7/Formula%20Easter.rar?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/n9ulop5f6pyjen7/Formula%20Easter.rar?dl=0)

It's a 1.2Gb download, so if that's likely to cause problems you may want to follow my earlier links and get all the cars separately

Thanks Tim and Fabri for the advice.
I have started playing with some other setting, like changing front toe to reduce some strong oversteer on avia default setup.
You gotta start somewhere :)

I have wings 7-4. The rest is quite similar to default setup.
PS: rear toe at 10.

That's 7 rear 4 front? I tried them both, and this version felt much better. I was using 4-4, but 7r-4f felt more stable without loosing speed.
Fabri, do you have ptracker installed? For some reason, none of your laps have sector times, and I can not make a direct comparison of our laps on stracker.

No, those cars are included but now there's a whole bunch of new ones as well. See the first post. I've just installed the big RAR download and just let it overwrite the cars I already had and it all worked fine, thanks fmg.

If everything keeps going better here, I might try to get in that event, sacrificing rythmn over fun, thanks to the 2x20 format. Not sure I could though. Then I probably will keep the same car as last time as I'm quite unable to test and setup the other ones.

Thank you Tim for organizing this !

I think you have a good enough excuse for not trying the others Maxime ;) , so I'll make sure there's an MTX of what ever variant you drove last time assigned to you.

For everyone else please remember to nominate a car tonight - as first thing in the morning I'll be updating the server drivers file.
If you haven't told me what you want you may find it unavailable come race time!

So far I know about the following:

Fabri         = AE2
Barone      = AE2 (r2)
Syd          = AE2
Goldtop     = Melkus
Max          = RAF80
Maxime     = MTX1-03b (r3)
Pete         = MTX1-03b
Kdiesel      = Estonia 21
Frex         = MTX1-06

Based on the last round that's a lot who need to pipe-up!

We still have unused MTX1-06's, and Estonia 20/21's.

Unfortunately the 21 seems to have become a lot slower in recent updates - so unless you really want it because it's so pretty I can't recommend it for Brands (I'm going to do some testing at high speed circuits to see if it's equally slow on those too. Bit pointless including it in the series if it is!
However the 20 looks to be well on par based on Fabri's practice times ;)
I'll be on later too, in order to give the remainder some love after concentrating on the 21.

If we can choose skins:
Avia AE2 n.26 for me
Avia AE2 R2 n.22 (the first one) for Barone.

About lap-times, the MT77 and RAF 80 should be more competitive than I have done; I tried them in a hurry and with a bad setup (a lot of understeer). Instead the Estonia 21 is out of pace, 1 second slower than rest.

Tim, the differences between AE2 and AE2 R2 are only aesthetic (wheels), does nothing change? I haven't tried the normal AE2, I would not like to have surprises tomorrow ... :)

Title: Re: Brands Hatch Indy - Formula Easter test race 2. Weds 8th April

As already said by Fabri AE2 it's ok for me.
R2 version is ok, so I don't have to swap the setup file  ;D

I think r2 should be the same as normal AE2 just different wheel as in the 1-03b correct?

Title: Re: Brands Hatch Indy - Formula Easter test race 2. Weds 8th April
Post by: FullMetalGasket on April 07, 2020, 09:02:00 PM +0100
Yup, just different wheels.
You can copy the setups between the 2 versions of you need/want to.

At this rate I'll be in an RAF or an Estonia 20 I guess...

And yes, The Melkus should pretty much match the RAF and MTX1-3's in my experience.

Driver list is fully updated for those who have given me a car choice - thanks guys, this should mean you're gauranteed the car you chose if AC's driver lists actually mean anything...
I'm taking the Estonia 20 as no-one has opted for it, a shame as it gives me a huge grin when I drive it as it's just sooo lively ;D

The only real exception here is Lorenzo - as I don't have your steam ID I've been unable to enter it against one of the MTX1-06's. Your best bet is to arrive early as there was only very limited space to add more cars.
If all MTX1-06's are taken before he arrives, I might have to ask any interlopers to give it up please ;)

Maxime - I've added an MTX1-03b r3 for you as that's what you had last time out.
Pete - Same for you - except you had a normal 03b so I've assigned one of those to you.

There were only 12 spaces left after assigning everyone, so that means 2 cars of each type extra (apart from the 21, I didn't think many would want it so only 1 extra car added).
The setups are largely transferable, so if you had one that worked at Biker in the 1-03's just copy the settings to whatever you end up in tonight. It probably won't be perfect, but it'll give you a good starting point :) (apart from in the RAF, that thing loves understeer here so will need slightly more extreme measures!)

I didn't get any feeling with the car, anyway race 1 didn't go as bad as I would thought.
Race 2 was more unlucky, I was on 5-6 pos when the guys in front spun in the exit of Graham Hill corner. I tried to avoid them but I ended on the grass and restarted last. I then got up to 9 pos when I spun like an idiot on the Druids' inside kerb and I was stuck on the wall. I had quite a good margin so I ended up losing only one position but it was disappointing. It happens.

Congrats to the winners!

Sorry I didn't race last night was late to the computer and still needed to install all the cars, trouble was the download was corrupt and I couldn't open it. No time to download again so I missed out. I have downloaded it again this morning and checked the file is complete so I'll be ready for next time.

Really like these cars.

Made an ok start to race 1 but was then tapped from behind at Druids, there were cars around me and I was on the inside so I was probably a little cautious heading into the turn. Had a good chase back but then started to get a bit too ambitious into Paddock Hill and had a couple of big offs. Race 2 was going well and leading with a few minutes to go until I clipped the curb in Druids which spat me off to the inside armco. Only a light touch but enough to kill my steering  :'(

Looking forward to the series and these mysterious Russian tracks that FMG has lined up for us  :)

I thoroughly enjoyed that - There was a period towards the end of practice where Frex, Fabri and myself spent over 5 minutes separated by about 0.04 seconds despite a few improvements between us 8)
Sadly the gap was a bit higher in Qualifying - although I managed to finally pip Fabri by a ridiculous 0.019 of a sec on my final lap (I had time for another but not enough fuel).

Race 1 started well although I was forced to defend a fair amount and keep and eye on where Fabri was. About 4 or 5 laps in he made an error on the kerb at Graham Hill bend and lost the rear of his car - that gave me more space and time to think so I was able to very slowly start creeping away from Frex who had inherited 2nd.
From about the 10 minute point I was far enough ahead that I was able to watch the main pack come screaming into Paddock hill bend as I was leaving Druids - It looked absolutely fantastic, especially as there regularly seemed to be fights and battles taking place 8)

Race 2 was marred somewhat by a number of incidents on lap 1. The 2nd of which caused absolute carnage! Which is strange really as I think everyone got through Druids cleanly bar some lockups.
I rejoined after the fracas in Graham Hill bend very nearly last and had a whale of a time working back up the order. A few people were kind enough to fall off on their own (Max was sadly among them - I was curious to see how long he could hold me off as he clearly wasn't getting along with the RAF80 too well, I have to admit it did seem to suffer bad understeer over Paddock hill when I was trying it out).
Instead I had a great fight with Lorenzo (It's been too long ;D ), which after a few failed attempts I finally managed to pull off thanks to a great dive-bomb into Druids followed by luring him into an out-braking contest for Graham Hill - Which I skipped in order to out drag him from the exit ;)
After that I was trying like crazy to narrow the gap to Fabri but made too many mistakes - Either my front aero had taken a whack in the L1 shenanigans or I was just over-driving.

Well done to the Podiums and thank you to everyone who's turned up - While I think these can be fun even to hot lap they are an absolute blast in a pack!

Barring the MTX1-06 needing to be added to the Formula Easter class the results import has gone without a hitch so I'm declaring my learning as over.
Next week will be another simple fun event so as not to interfere with everyone's efforts on Thursday - it'll be road based again but a totally different animal (and great fun!).

There is also a possible fun event in the pipeline with us Vs Russia - all off the back of my talks with Yurik about these cars.
Current intention is Estonia 21's at Tor Poznan with a pencilled in date of Friday 24th April at roughly our normal time.
Firm date and server details to be announced, so watch the Announcements sub forum ;)

TBH knwoign I was so slow I was going to let you past like I did Fabri and just drive for the best finish I could, then I potato'd into the gravel anyway :D

RAF would probably be Ok if I had more time to set it up,  it was getting better each time I tweaked it but after some some t-bone at the start of race2 I don't think the lap times reflected that. It def has some nasty understeer in Paddock and another thing - the mirrors are useless in VR, I can see barely anything in them and was driving more by radar. Still it was clearly off pace at Brands so IDK, need to try it at some other tracks.

I intend to run 1 further test race with the cars - this will be at a high speed circuit with the intention of seeing if that throws up a different result.
(circuit to be worked out still - I don't really want to break the surprise yet on any of the new locations we'll be visiting if I can help it)
If it does then we're home and dry and can pick from all the cars based on preference (well, probably not the Estonia 21 unless people REALLY want to as it's so slow) when the season starts.

I'm still intending to run something else in a short season first - If nothing else it gives me something less complex to cut my teeth on, plus I can get some advertising underway for the Easters once I can set a date.

I think the RAF could be helped at Brands with a mildly aggressive spot of toe out and the diff altered to keep it in check - I did this with the Melkus as it was a little understeery and managed to place it 2nd overall on the lap times. It was faster out of the box that the RAF admittedly, but not that much faster!

Beautiful highlights pics!

The races were a lot of fun and hard fought. Cars are very interesting to drive. I think some are fairly balanced, especially the MTX1-06, Avia AE2, Estonia 20 and MTX1-03. Maybe RAF is a bit slower, same for MT77. Instead the Estonia 21 is completely out of pace, 1 sec slower.

I had good lap-times on my Avia and I was near to pole. Then I started have troubles with my PC, disco + high ping and this made me nervous enough before race 1.
I started well and I followed Tim perfectly. Unfortunately after some laps my car has rocketed away on the kerb at Graham Hill bend (probably my car touched down while drifting). I didn't spin, but I managed to stay straight after several zig-zags, loosing no so much time.
I rejoined 6th. I started a good comeback fighting several battles. I took the second position a bit violently, with a contact with Stefan at the fast esse Surtees. Sorry again mate. Finished 2nd.

Race 2. A good start, there were, for two times, massacres at Graham Hill bend. At first lap I could not avoid the contact of the mess that had been created, laps later instead I managed to pass the inside while 2 cars hooked up, lucky enough.
I fought hard with Maxime, wich is so hard to pass, but he entered to pits after some laps. So I was second, behind Goldtop, closing the gap every lap. Then he had troubles on Druids so I took the lead and won.

Nice organization, Tim!

I had good fun with Estonia 21 among backmarkers, biggest problems it has is very long 1st gear, least it shoots out from corners pretty well...

that was a cracking combo last night really enjoyed it.  Should have been top 4 in race 1 and podium in race 2 really but a spin in both races and a punt into the gravel scuppered my chances.
Had done very little running prior to the event (circa 20 laps!) and made some setup tweaks on the fly based on feedback the car was giving me. Improved it nicely with a few adjustments and I could really enjoy racing with it. Put it 4th in qually (home track advantage  :P ) Stayed 4th for first few laps until a downshift at Clearways put me into a big slow tail-turn around onto the infield grass. This was like bambi on ice and I dropped to the very bottom of the field trying to find traction  :'( But then I had mega fun fighting my way back up through the field to a decent 6th place.

Race 2, lasted as far as T1 when someone nerfed me into the fabled well used gravel at Paddock. But when I rejoined there were umpteen incidents going on ahead of me with cars firing off left right and centre  :o I haven't seen that many contacts for ages, calm down boys!  I chased Fabri and GT ahead for a few laps for the podium places but I then oddly had another blinking spin at Druids and lost a heap of places again.  :taz: But with good pace and setting lots of 'green' lap times over most of the field I re-caught up with Max ahead. But although I took time out of him most laps and closed him down, the race finished before I could pressure him. A disappointing 6th again.

Made an ok start to race 1 but was then tapped from behind at Druids, there were cars around me and I was on the inside so I was probably a little cautious heading into the turn.

It was me, GT, and I apologize. Unfortunately I was trying to overtake Pietro Tortello and so it was tough moment. In addition he started to move on me to close the door while I was braking in his rear right  :-\ so that I had to give a bit more of right angle to my braking point, which didn't help.
Then the tap was costly for you, sorry. Made me having a bit of fun with Mark behind.

Last 2 laps were ultra fuel saving here, need to tap onto the gauge...

No problem Maxime. I too had to ease off for the last couple of laps in race 1 and just managed to splutter over the finish line.

Never thought i could have this much fun with a Lada powered car. ::)

I've been saying for years that the racing is generally better in slower cars - not as sexy I admit - but much closer and better ;D
I went back onto the server prior to re-setting for next weeks' race, and put some times in with the 2 cars I hadn't tried, this gives us the following table of laptimes. There will be 1 remaining fun event prior to Season 16 at a high speed circuit - so we can see if/how these times change. Hopefully some shuffling will occur and we can all pick whatever car we like the looks of most for the season proper 8)
(https://i.postimg.cc/4nwnZV4X/Lap-times-per-car.png) (https://postimg.cc/4nwnZV4X)
(I think the RAF80 has more speed in it at Brands, maybe enough to match the ~48.6 of most other cars. But I couldn't be bothered sitting in a boiling hot spare room long enough to try!)

The next 2 weeks worth of races are also now posted, and can I also direct everyone's attention to this post here: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=19252.msg350482#msg350482 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=19252.msg350482#msg350482)
