Post by: Simon Gymer on August 07, 2006, 11:30:12 AM +0100
All members welcome.

Date: Sunday 27th August

Practice: 20:00 (30 mins)
Qualifying: 20:30 (30 mins)
Race: 21:00 (29 laps = ~80 mins)

Cars allowed: Any GTC-TC-76, plus the GT-40, Cobras, any Corvette (including '65 ones), TVR, Shelby Daytona Coupé
Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Pit Stops: All drivers must make a minimum of one pit stop. This must involve entering the pit lane at the speed limit, and coming to a complete standstill in the designated pit box. Tyres do not have to be changed and no fuel has to be added. You cannot take your mandatory stop at the end of the pace lap, or with less than 1 lap to go.

Server: UKGTL Endurance; in the event that the lobby is unavailable, connect using Direct IP, entering games.avonrise.co.uk in the Add IP box
Password: We will use the UKGTL Ladder password; see this post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1665.0)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7). Note in particular that we will be using the pit lane speed limiter starting procedure.
(3) General information can be found on the UKGTL home page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&group=13).
(4) The season will be run using a UKGTL carpack v1.1 which will need to be installed prior to racing.

Car choice still to be confirmed - possibly just '76 with the GT40 or some of the other, faster '65s.

Take a Pantera, green Vette or Escort to an endurance event, and you'll be home before dark  ;D

What's an endurance event without the GT40?

True. And at the end of the day... why not?

Hmmm, should be a good one if as many turn up as last night, if not more - Spa is a big track!
I reckon the GT40 should be banned! (unless everyone used this as the car of choice )

Are there any plans to do some sort of GTL enduro sesh at Le Mans - any class, any car? 8)

It'll probably happen eventually, but we're always hesitant to use a lot of add on tracks because we often encounter problems with them.

An 80 minute race in these beasts will certainly be an 'endurance' event ! :o  I find wrestling them around for our normal 25 lap races a real challenge and usually feel knackered after.

Maybe as its Spa, it should be raining too !....but i would say that because i cannot make the race unfortunately. :'(
shame....70's cars at Spa, ah the nostalgia  :wheelchair: :notworthy:  :'(

I think Gizmo has his maths wrong, it should be about 29 laps I think (at roughly 2:42 per lap in a 76 car), unless he's lapping twice as fast as everyone else?  ;) :o ;D

Well, just for you I'll slow down and reduce the race length to 29 then. ;) :P No idea where 44 laps came from!

I didnt realise that GTL didnt have rain !?...thought we just hadnt ran in it yet  :-\ :-[

What a crap oversight for a racing sim >:(...wonder why Simbin cut corners on this follow up sim, ie with the slightly arcadey feel, poor damage modelling, no race warmup sesh etc...bit poor show. They could at least fix it with a Le Mans add-on series  8) ;D

It would be cool to have a full cycle in 80 minutes. Looks fake I know, but it adds some IMO.

When we trialed GTL, people veto'd non-day settings due to their hardware not being able to cope (they didn't want to turn it down!  :P)

It's a real shame for me as I like nightime stuff.  8)

why 80 mins? and not rounded up to an hour and a half? I'd like to do some night-day transitions... not sure how much my system would cope though. The healights on these cars seem to be overly fragile... even in the cars with the setback headlights (eg GT40 etc...)

Hi chaps,

I've been away for a while (moved house etc) but have just set up everything again, so i'll join if there are any spare places late-on.  I'm very rusty so i'll get some practice tonight (just looked and found a practice server).

I'm also on a new ISP (NTL) so i dont know what my connection will be like (so please tell me if its crap!)

Looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.

Phil.

why 80 mins? and not rounded up to an hour and a half?

Its double the length of a sprint race. This is the length we use for GTR Endurance races, so perfectly normal for SimRacing.org.uk.

Ah ok... i'd do well to finish just half of it anyway :)

Had a nice race, got to know the track more the race went on. Was well pleased with my fastest lap 2-39-3 ;D But Radius had me well beaten. Sorry for spin Radius. I had a double downshift moment :( And sorry to Bill for getting lapping pass wrong :(
Nice racing all :)

Really really enjoyed the race. Hard work trying to hang on to Dave in the first half of the race. He came into the pits behind me and when I came out he was 8.6 secs in front. Came around again and he was back in the pits - oh dear :P. Wouldn't have caught him otherwise.
Delighted with 4th. Grats to the winner - and to Ruskus for making the Escort go so fast.

I was happy with quallifying 3rd. I was way slower than JonM and Radius in the 906 and 911, but I could get my little Escort up to pace a bit.

One thing I just cannot get. Why oh why do people weave so much during the formation lap. Especially at Spa, weaving at the first straight after Eau Rouge has no use at all. First of all the speed is too slow to get good friction, and second, by the time the lap ends, the tyres are cold again. It's much more efficient to fully lock the steering during a corner. Do that in both a right hander and a left hander, and the tyres will be up to temp very quickly. It's much safer and much more efficient. To many incidents happy by excessive weaving.
And why can't people remember it's a rolling start. Almost every event there is somebody shooting off when the lights go green. The starting procedure is always the same at GTL. The only standing start is with the Elise cup in GTR.
This is not aimed personally towards anybody. It's just to bring it up, because they re-occure often.

The race was pure boredome. Driving laps for 80 minutes, nothing more. After 20 minutes I turned the tv on, to have something to watch.

I was surprised to get to the finish with the Escort, because i couldn't lower the rev limiter. I've blown Escort engines even before the startline, just after the lights went green ;D

Another totally haddocked up pit stop. Hopefully by the time the scored Comet races start I'll have worked out how to do them properly.

Hung onto Johnny reasonably well in the first half, was actually being held up in some parts of the track towards the end of the stint as his tyres went off, which was worrying as Tom was all over me in the Bus Stop.

Had a couple of minor offs but concentration level back up again after Thursday nightmare at Mondello. Came in to do my stop right behind Tom, checked that they were going to give me fuel and tyres and said okay. Couldn't believe he was still sitting there as I passed through the speed limit point, got back on track, tyres felt scarily cold and then it dawned on me that I'd not really checked the amount of fuel they were going to give me properly, and they'd put next to none in, so I had to come back in at once. This time I got it right, and also left the tyres alone, but it cost me what would've been 4th place after Johnny's splash and dash, assuming I could've held Tom off.

When we do this again I'm going to make it a scoring event for Ladder purposes in the hope of attracting more entries.

To many incidents happy by excessive weaving.

I can't see how weaving causes incidents unless people are actually going off. If anyone's weaving so hard they fall off the track in these cars they really need to calm down a bit.

As usual, report incidents needing moderation via the form once the results are up.

And why can't people remember it's a rolling start. Almost every event there is somebody shooting off when the lights go green. The starting procedure is always the same at GTL. The only standing start is with the Elise cup in GTR.

Especially as somebody asked at the end of qually and I reminded everyone at least twice before the race. ::)

Strange thing on the penultimate lap, coming up to the Bus Stop I thought I braked as normal but the car just didn't slow as if the brakes had overheated, but then it felt normal again after that. ???

I'm afraid i missed this guys - had some issues at my end with pc, so had to quit at start.
I thought more would have turned up for this, but i think Dave's idea of making it a scoring event for the ladder is a good one.
Grats to all who ran tonight.

nightmare race for me. I got down to 2:44-5 in race trim and felt good... but car didn't feel under me at the start, and let Tom Cooper through so I didn't get pressured into a mistake. But sure enough, pushing to keep up made me make a mistake in Eau Rouge... a very big one!! (I wish the cockpit in GTL would stay at the bottom of the screen when a car rolls!!

Car felt a bit bad after that, and I was 2 secs off my pace. Decided to stick with my pit strategy, but really got sick of the handling and came in around lap 14. Came in just in front of Tom in the pits. Pulled into my box, and I couldn't figure out why the clipboard wasn't showing. So after lots of accelerating and reversing I decided to go out again and try the next lap. Sure enough the next lap I lined it up properly in my pitbox and did a stop. Fixing damage aswell, I sat there like a lemon until it had completed now down to last! Came out of the pits and at the first 2 corners I dumped it into the barriers like a bonehead taking off the front splitter (or so I thought) For the first time my car was oversteery... exactly what I had been trying to do to it setup wise!! Bit of a handful though and did get away from me a couple of times. Fuel light came on.... I had yet again looked at the capacity and not the laps fuel put in....so back to the pits I went to put a proper fuel load in and NOT fixing any damage this time.

I was catching 11th place by about 5 secs a lap... and it looked like I was gonna catch them, but constant mistakes from me meant I was gonna get nowhere near! Overall.... hugely depressing race, I just can't get the hang on GTL really, i'm sure I could do endurance in Rfactor and stay more consistent than this. I was pooped after this, huge pain at the base of my neck and my arse always aches from sitting for so long. At least I didn't get a bad braking heal like I usually get in long races.

Bring on more races (i'm a sucker for punishment!)

Nice racing all :)

Only minor bump I remember from a 906 was at the last chicane.  I'd picked up earlier I was going to be lapped and I kept to right under braking  and stayed right, this made the right hand portion quiet sharp meaning I was slower than normal through right hand part of chicane.  The 906 did not go down inside as I expected but was, I think, waiting until after chicane and my slowing down to take last part of chicane caught him out!!

I had a good race.  Early on and towards the end, I had quiet a few laps in close company with Clarey, he was faster than me but his lack of recent competion meant he had a few overshoots and other woopsies.  Nice to have someone to race with!!

Bill

It was good to race with you bill, first 5 laps or so were fun until i went off backwards and saw my rear spoiler detaching in my rear view mirror.  Had a long spell trying to catch up afterwards.

Great defensive driving meant it was hard to pass in a faster car, could only really do it safely by carrying more speed through eau rouge and passing on the straight, great fun.  I'm looking forward to more "wooden spoon" challenges in the future ;D

I am pleased to say i could have gone on for a lot longer, no physical effects for me (i've made some adjustments to my cockpit during my house move) just mental strength needs work :-\

Might make the elise cup on tuesday.

My mental stength is there (Red Bull isn't a banned substance is it? oh no, it's okay, I make the rules ;) ) but after the race last night my left shoulder and part o my neck are really stiff. :-\

Hopefully I'll be alright in time for the Comet race tonight.

Thanks for that.  However the results show the true picture.  Once you'd settled down and done some racing laps, you put in a fastest race lap over 3.5 sec faster than my qualifying time.  I think I will retain the race for the wooden spoon with whoever makes the biggest whoopsie or cocks up the amount of fuel on board (initially, underestimating consumption or refuelling).  You will obviously qualify ahead of me and I won't see you again.

Bill

PS I only race GTL - trying to recapture my long lost youth when I lusted after the Lotus Cortina, have seen Jim Clark three wheeling corners at Brands.
