Title: Elise Cup - round 1 - Donington GP - 15th August
Post by: Dave 'Gizmo' Gymer on August 15, 2006, 07:57:43 AM +0100
Date: Tuesday 15th August

Practice 1: 20:30 (25 mins)
Practice 2: none
Qual 2: 20:55 (18 mins)
Warmup: 21:13 (2 mins)
Race: 21:15 (40 mins)

Cars allowed: Lotus Elise only
Weather: Dry
Start: Standing

Server: UKGTR Elise Cup
Password: Server Password will be the usual practice/fun race password, as shown in this post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=12.0).

Notes:
(1) No registration is required; all forum-registered members may join.
(2) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(3) See the Series Info (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&group=30) for general Elise Cup info.
(4) Please make sure you are fully aware of the UKGTR Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7); note that we have no specific standing start rules, but first lap incidents will be punished more harshly than subsequent incidents
(5) No carpack is required; all drivers will take the default Elise

A few notes:

If somebody wants to post a link to a carpack we will consider using it for subsequent rounds.

Because this is essentially a "for fun" championship I'm going to take a risk and use a standing start. If it all goes horribly wrong we will go back to rolling starts as usual so keep it clean!

Cool, looking forward to these.  Just make sure to remind people on the grid that it's a standing start or there might be chaos!

ps. I haven't decided what scoring system to use yet, I'll probably tweak it as we go along to ensure maximum points for Team Sharkfairness.

Cool, had my first race ever using these last weekend for a TPG race and thought they were great fun little cars.

I'll be there this eve. A car pack would be great. They use a good one over at TPG, i'm sure if you guys asked Haiku or Whitham nicely he could point you in the right direction for it as they are a great set of skins.

Some Elise setups would be handy too  ;)

Surely this is a typo?

Donington National does not exist in GTR!

I won't be racing on these Tuesdays so hope the other Sharks can do our team proud.

Ah, so I'm not going mad then ....

I'd prefer the national circuit tho, hate that last hairpin.

I've had no reply back yet from the creator of the skinpack, he may even be on holiday :-\  I have the skin pack installed on my pc and the necessary zip file but cant really generally release it without knowing if its up for public consumption. I cant really see Porschenut having any issues with us using, but egh, what do 'ya do?  :-X

Can anyone decipher this text thats in the readme with the file. It might say 'help  yourself'  ;)

Well, what was promising suddenly became carnage.
Was taken out (along with Rob) on the start and lost it at the last corner of the first lap trying to get past Jamera.

I don't know who subsequently hit me (Maurice?) but I apologise for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Then something wierd happened - was going into my second lap and everyone just disappeared!  :o
(no, not into the distance sarkies!) I could see cars ahead of me then they just vanished! Stopped after a while and waited on the track to see if I was driving by myself and no one was on track......wierd!

Anyway, if all went well for everyone else then I hope it was a good one, those Elises are loads of fun.

Voila:

- not enough practice
- 5th on the grid - ok
- untested setup with race parameters
- huge understeer after 10 laps
- losing places
- struggling
- crash into Crow at his rejoining the track

Sorry buddy, had nowhere to go. Neither had you.  ;D
Otherwise an enjoyable event. Will there be just Elises on Tuesdays?

TT

P.S. Now you see why Jon likes Laško Pivo. Matjaz grew up on it, milk didn't have enough foam!  :alien:
Grats to the winner.

Cracking start to the race for me after a PB in qualifying, up to 8th (I think) and was going really well.  One mistake took me back to 11th, and had another good spell with a group of us very close together.  After battling with Don (gentlemanly driving once again sir!) I spun and was left looking at Don speed up the road whilst I was waiting for a safe spot to rejoin, after that I couldn't get in a rythm, and when I was starting to get it together, I would spin, someone else would spin and leave me nowhere to go .... had an off after side contact (waiting to see the replay on that one), and then some more spins.

Shame I couldn't maintain my early form, but on the whole (excluding the offs that weren't due to driver error on my part) it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Thanks again all.

I'm longing for the day that Lasko pivo will be in my life again
Just a shame life costs so much and I can't get a holiday :(
Great race. I had a great battle with Ruskus. He seemed faster on the straights and I couldn't get close enough to have a pop under the brakes but in the end traffic came to my aid and let me just get close enough to go around the outside at turn 1. As soon as I passed Ruskus seemed to find an extra 0.3 a lap and was soon up my rear. I think he would've got by in the end TBH but I got a bit too excited and double downshifted into turn 1 :( Would've been a great scrap with only 5mins left and now can only dream of what could've been.
The cars seemed very closely matched, that was the best fight I've had in GTR in a long time. Long live the Elise's....And Lasko hmmmm
Grats to Matjaz who was a beast in his Lotus. Way faster than the rest. Well done, it's just a shame you couldn't drink some Zlatorog club before you raced ;)

Man what a hard race.

In practice this afternoon I was doing high 42's low 43's. So I thought I had no chance when people were gonna do 41's (and even 40's by Matjas :o).
But I did a high 41 in qually somehow, and in the last 5 minutes I tried once more and got a 1:41.3 and 2nd place.

I couldn't see the light at the start so I had to watch my timer and from my point of view a had a bit better start than Matjaz, but I was keeping it safe in T1 and taking it like a granny.
He was so much quicker that I had no chance to keep up, and risking trying the whole race is not possible. For 25 minutes I had Jon right  behind me, never more than 1 sec :D. It was a real nerve test that :).
After that a backmarker spun infront of us and I lost some speed there and Jon was able to take my place. I thought he was a bit faster so I was gonna lose him once he passed. And he did move away from me the following laps. But at that point I tried 2 laps pushing pretty hard and see if I could get any closer, and luckily I did, and I could get the pressure on him :).
In the last hairpin I had some better exitspeed and I could just get a bit alongside heading towards Redgate. But with 3 minutes to go it was way too risky to leave my car on the inside and I braked early. But Jon unluckily double shifted downwards :(. That was a shame, 'cause like Jon said, it could have been a very interesting last 3 minutes. And the race deserved a close finish.

Although I don't like these cars (never used 5th gear ::)), the races could prove close and fun.

That was easier then I thought it would be. I had no special practice because I just formated my PC (I do it once a year  :)) and installed my bellowed GTR just before the race. Still I had a nice setup stored from previous races with Elise @ Donington so my car was perfect and I just had to find the braking points. I think that was my PB with Elise in qualifying but at the start of the race I had a small problem not being able to see the lights. Totally forgot about this little "bug" but still I had my dashboard so I just listened to rumbling motors behind me and waited for the timer to show up on the screen and off we went. Ruskus was a bit quicker at the start so I had to brake really late into the first corner and just managed to stay in the lead. I needed about 3 laps to get into the rhythm and from then on I was really flying and building a decent gap towards Ruskus behind me. I was surprised about my very constant lap times and how well my car performed in those fast corners which enabled me to have very good acceleration out of the corners. I was very carefull overtaking the backmarkers and they were all very fair and watching the mirrors so no problems there. My only scary moment was when Maverick was trying to get out of the sand and reversing on the track but I saw his intentions so I was able to go left on the grass avoiding the hit. That's a good thing about this little cars... because they are so slow and you have time to avoid the troubles and/or prepare the attack so I'm really looking forward to racing again with you. I'm sure it won't be so easy as it was today.

Thanks for a great race and a great turn out... 21 drivers if I'm not mistaken.  :thumbup1:

Thanks for the complement Adam, I kept looking in my mirrors expecting you to catch up again. Had a few battles with the Crow along the way also ;)

The Elises are a great leveler and really provide some great racing IMO. These kind of races are everything I was hoping GTL would be, but as some of us have found the overly aggressive nature of GTL league meets has soured the enjoyment of it for some of us.
More Elise's please.

Well it was nice to see a resonably full grid, just shows theres life in the old girl yet.
Always fun driving these little beauties even without any practice or setup.
Was going along nicely in 6th or 7th until I made a complete mess of the Esses and flipped the car over on its side, appologies to whoever it was ran into my stranded car.
After that I was kind of stranded between 2 sets of cars without much action apart from the odd visit from BigG who kept spinning allowing me to catch him up before speeding off again.

A cracking race, great fun.  8)

Qualied 7th despite setting a 1:42 :o time in a hastily scrambled together setup which seemed to work really well at Donington as i was able to throw the car through the different undulating corners. Amazing pace as always up front, getting a top 10 place is a real feat lately :-X
Race started great with a good clean get away and was part of the front 7 car pack that pulled away from the rest of the grid who were all jostling for position. Kept a tight rein on TT and RSM? just in front of me until they both had errors in turn at the chicane and i was able to zoom through. Found myself in 4th place and stayed a second or so behind JonM and Ruskus battle for quite a few laps with a healthy gap over TT & RS behind me, until i slightly over-shot the chicane and lost about 6 seconds crawling across the grass verge, wary of spinning.  :-[
Then kept a watching brief for rest of race about 9-10 secs behind JonM/Ruskus and a 10 second+ gap back to a chasing Leuven.
Had a half spin late on at the downhill hairpin and Leuven closed up to a couple of secs behind but i pulled out a good gap again.

Towards race end, JonM made an error and i was able to close right up on him, his tyres seemed to be giving him trouble and he was un-expectadly shaky through a few corners ???...i saw a podium place for the taking and began to harry his car for one or two laps but then alas on the penultimate lap, following too close to his rear in turn 1, i late braked myself, sliding sideways off into the gravel and watched with horror as Leuven and ?? steamed past. :(
I was gutted, as i'd held 4th the entire race and now dropped to 6th  :'(

Luckily for me, i got some consolation on the very last lap when Leuven somehow lost it at the downhill chicane and i re-claimed a place to finish 5th  8)

Great fun and good clean racing. However despite recent post on driving standards, I still had trouble with two back markers who tried to race me and wouldnt move off line, one cost me 3 seconds on one lap :( , can only presume they didnt have name/position tags on ???

Cheers for the lapchart Ruskus. I seem to have only completed one lap which would maybe indicate why every other car disappeared after that.... :o

Very wierd indeed! Especially seeing as I completed at least 12/13 laps!

...I kept looking in my mirrors expecting you to catch up again.

I was hoping too, but a couple of spins in quick succession left my rear tyre temps through the roof :(, shame really, as Crow, your good self and I were nose to tail for a good while having a right tussle.

I hope I'm not one of these .... you were behind and infront of me for a while, after passing me you slid off at the final turn, but I don't think I held you up too much....

Yeah , had a great scrap with Mark J and RS for many laps whilst climbing back up to my original position after making some kind of mistake ::)

I also had a very hard tine trying to get past some backmarkers, as if they went wide (mistake or to let me past) then took road position and started racing making it very difficult to pass.  ???

Guys, if you had problems with backmarkers submit incident reports.

Do not discuss it here! :2guns:

The gearbox is a sealed item in that Elise and therefore not adustable.

It makes sense not to play the blame game, but its gone from not mentioning the names to not even mentioning any incident, ???
Surely we can just mention it so people can get info and know that maybe they weren't alone at the same time keeping it clean (no names / slagging off) ?
If we don't mention anything we'll soon be coming on here and only sending PM's and incident reports, rather than posting in a community.

At the end of the day its your forum, so if thats the final word then OK.  :)

I'm saying it now before one of the alluded too backmarkers takes offence, posts and the whole thing spirals out of control. I chose not to edit the posts because they didn't name names but it's so very easy for one of those people to get the hump and misinterpret something phrased as a complaint as a personal dig.

To quote from Mark's original post, "However despite recent post on driving standards, I still had trouble with two back markers who tried to race me and wouldnt move off line" is not the most diplomatic of phrasings. Had he merely said "I had trouble getting past two backmarkers" it would've had far less potential for trouble.

Oh dear, sounds like i am in the doghouse again :-[...Sorry, Dave i wasnt digging anyone out hence no names or particular incidents, if you read the sentence again rather than looking for the negative in my statement you will see that i said also 'perhaps they didnt have name tags on? '...easy mistake with all the cars being the same type & colour scheme.

Jeez, this is racing after all, 'passion' goes hand in hand with it..some people are bordering on paranoia lately  ::)

I'll talk to my PR people and in future they can release bland post race press releases on my behalf :P ;D

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get me! :P

Please believe me, I'm not just being picky; we've already had cases on these forums of unpleasant heated debates sparked by comments which the original poster thought were innocuous, and before that numerous cases of the same on UKGPL.
