All members welcome.

Date: Thursday 24th August

Practice: 20:30 (15 mins)
Qualifying: 20:45 (20 mins)
Race: 21:05 (25 laps = ~40 mins)

Cars allowed: Austin-Healey 3000, Renault Alpine A110, Mercedes 300SL
Time of Day Setting: 14:00

Password: See this post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1665.0)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7). Note in particular that we will be using the new pit lane speed limiter starting procedure.
(3) General information on the ladder can be found on the series home page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&group=25).
(4) The season will be run using a UKGTL carpack v1.1 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/downloads/UKGTL-skins-1.1.zip) which will need to be installed prior to racing.

OK - I give up. What cars are allowed? (Or will we only be told this on the night?

Some of us need more practice than others.

How true. :P

Car choice now in first post. I'm doing three people's jobs at the moment so 50% more work than normal ;)) so things take just a little longer than usual.

Could somebody post some representative race lap times so I can set the lap distance too please?

Thanks Dave - didn't mean to imply you were under-employed (any more tetchy and you'll start to qualify as a grumpy old man)

Don't know where you got the cars from, but it should be fun. Think I agree with Will - the Alpine may be the way to go.

I just wanna go with the one with the meatier sounding engine. I can't remember driving any of these!

Nice car choices, torn between the Healy and the 300SL.  :)

Laptimes should be in the low 1:3xs Dave, so probably about 25 laps for 40 minutes (allowing for the slow pace lap).

Alpine for me. I have driven it at Comet against Ferrari's and Vettes and had no chance whatsoever :D so it should be good to be fighting with others in this car.

Thanks, 25 laps it is then.

Healey for me. Obviously. :D

I can give you my Alpine setup. It's still a W.I.P and it might not suit your driving. It is pretty fast though I think.

i have no setups for these cars... i'm screwed!

Nah, to get a workable setup in a hurry I do the following to the defaults with a great deal of success:

1. One or two clicks stiffer on all damper settings (the defaults are always 1, the softest). I adjust either the front or rear by 1 as required to tweak any mid-corner under- or oversteer.

2. One or two clicks of extra front toe out. Gives it sharper steering response.

3. Adjust final drive ratio to max top gear at the end of the fastest straight. Not always possible; most cars don't allow any other gearbox adjustment.

4. Check fuel.

5. Go racing!

On rare occaisions I tweak the brake balance and diffs but mostly I find them best left alone.

Alpine for me - still not totally happy with my laps though, getting into the low 1:33's and that was it.  Might tweak the setup, but I'd easily shave a second off my time if I was a bit better through the last few corners, especially the last one.

Still, looking forward to tomorrow.

Well that has re-instated some of my belief in GTL. The Healy is the most fun car I've driven in GTL full stop. Was fantastically balanced whilst being completely lairy, i.e. chuck it about wildly and balance the car with throttle and brake and steering input like it was a beautiful ice skater gliding across a frozen lake.  :clown:

I jumped straight into qualy with no track time and plumped on some setup that looked like it might do the job, but with no practice it was a bit of a shot in the dark. Not too shabby for 30 seconds work if I do say so myself as it got me from 24th? to 9th in the race.

Mondello sucks though, it's like a karting circuit, not my style at all, but it brings variety I guess.

Dunno how people moan about tyres all the time, I was smoking mine every corner for 25 laps and at the end the car felt exactly the same as it did when the race started. Never really felt tyre wear in GTL as the cars are too daft anyway to notice.

On holiday next week, so enjoy the racing folks!

Well done on the win Jeff! Nice points for the Sharkies there and should move you up nicely in the ladder.

The qually was interesting again. It always comes down to the last 5 minutes (LTT???). In practice I was doing high 1:30's, but at the end of qually I did a 1:29.8xx. The only way I can explain is by Live Track Technology. The same happened at Hoch, big difference between alone practice, and race qually.

The race started pretty well. I had JonM and Pero behind me but I could win back some lost space at some corners to keep the lead. Lapping people is always hard at this track, but I must say I didn't face any problems.

Happy with my racepace and the win.

Grats Zacari for winning in your class. ;D

Had a good race but didn't really get much wheel to wheel action. quailed 2nd just into the 1.29's I think, behind Ruskus. Start of the race I though I might have a chance of winning this one but once the race got underway I could see Ruskus and Pero were both quicker and more consistant than me. I was lucky to get 2nd as Pero made a error and ran wide onto the grass which put me through for a comfortable 2nd 8) Grats to Ruskus on his great drive :P

Good race - qually was dreadfull for me as I simply couldnt get together a proper lap. At one point I was 0.6 sec up in the last split going for a 29.6, but I got lag in that corner and went wide enough to get a cut track. Well I started fourth on the grid and after a few laps I managed to get into second position and was trying to catch Ruskus with little succes. After the lapping started I started to loose ground and I should have settled for second, but I tried pushing after I saw Ruskus got held up in traffic. On doing that I went wide in the worst possible corner and lost ages - and slid back to third position where I stayed. My worst result in a race that I finnished in the Ladder - not really happy with it as I could have done better (the speed was there). Anyhow - lets bring on some real cars and not plastic French toys  ;D

I know the feeling. :( Just when I was really getting to grips with my concentration levels during racing, I manage to enter a race with no practice and only four hours sleep the night before. In hindsight I should've taken the Alpine, I'm sure it would've been easier on its tyres and on me.

Had quite a good dice with EdamSpeed for a while but I was getting more and more lairy and eventually went off. Again. And then again. And again. After that I lost count. Not good. :(

Good race all, keep going Bill - you are doing ok ;)
Had a good first third of the race, i think the cars were pretty tightly packed from 16th to 24th - exiting stuff, and some good driving from all.
I spun my Alpine on the chicane after T1 however, and consistency went downhill from there, losing momentum..!
Ah well! ;D

Yep, I second that.

Very enjoyable race. Qualified 11th in the Healy and finished the race there - it's the bit in-between that was interesting. Had a good scrap over the first few laps. Can't remember who I was racing against now, it's all a bit of a blur. Managed to get up to 8th before 1p caught and passed me. Found some space and settled down into a bit of a rythym, stringing a few decent laps together, but spun off the track about 2/3rd of the way through, which lost me 3 positions. Made one place back, but couldn't make any impression on Mark Jonzo ahead of me. The Healy is a lot of fun to chuck around.

Had a reasonable qually - until I lost the connection, mso started from the back of the grid.  Got up to 17th before being on the receiving end of some contact that dropped me down to 20th.  Not even sure what I finished, 16th I think....

Had some cracking battle along the way (Neil Wood mostly), I found the Healy was quicker in a straight line, so despite getting close/alongside, passing the guys infront was tough .... apologies to anyone who was rubbed by me, don't think I caused anyone any problems.

I was most pleased with getting through it all without making (well bar 1 and a little bit) stupid errors, altough I never got in the ryuthm I needed to bring my laptimes down.

Still, really enjoyable, so cheers all.

Terrible race for me. First ladder race, as Thursday's have been busy for me otherwise.

Never driven the Alpine before, so thought I'd have a stab at that. Took ages to find a set up I was comfortable with, but I was still too slow in some corners. Best I could manage was a 33-ish. Middle of the pack qualify time.

Had some good scraps with various people, and for the life of me can't remember them now! All of them were clean though. Good dice with Gizmo - we both had our little spins, but it was very close. Then I ruined the battle by throwing myself so far off the track I thought I'd have to catch the ferry home ;)

On lap 18, I discovered my little Alpine must have had a fuel leak - I was running out! Unbelievable... So I pitted for a splash and dash, and forgot to turn off 'fix my damage' so spent a good 2 minutes more in the pits than I wanted. That put me back to flat last and a lap down to 21st place. Meh.

Hate that track in GTC-65. It's great fun in TC65, but I can just never get the hang of it in the 65 GTs.

I obviously don't click with this game, first ladder event I've done but can't say I really enjoyed it. I can't predict what the car will do from one lap to the next, there is no consistency to if it will understeer/oversteer or whether the brakes will work this time or not. Guess it's just me as you guys all seem to enjoy the cars so much  :-\

I'll do next week's Combe race because of the circuit and take up drifting for future GTL fun   ;)

I guess it was a bad move to take such a heavy car on such a twisty track. I found the healy hard and understeery to drive... couldn't remember what to do with the setup so left, apart from tightening front springs. The race was ok, I remember spinning someone around when I slowed up because of a slow couple of cars ahead, and got a nudge from behind which pushed someone around.

I got mullered by all these pesky alpines.. they were able to brake later, and get on the power earlier. Had some good battles with a few people. One person for the final 5 laps or so. Worked out a good defensive line and stuck to it making sure I didn't overdo it, and it seemed to work. I think next time i'll do some track and car research before I venture onto track again.

My 1st race with u dudes...was really looking forward to it.

Missed quali as i was on phone with g/f (u know how that goes!) So started last and didnt want to make any rash moves as im new here and havt driven the alpine enough.

As race unfolded i gathered pace but was held up for 80% of the race battling slower cars and going off to avoid hitting them under braking so could not show my true potential :) If it exits at all that is!

Fisnshed 14th but had so much more to offer, maybe 7th or 8th if better quali slot.

Felt i drove clean and fair and gave leaders ample room to pass when being lapped.

Tx for great race and well organised event with friendly and talented drivers.

i qualyfied 8th and finished in the 16th place, im thinking in going to a witch to stop my bad luck.

Had a pretty good race, qualied 9th in a very tough qually sesh, just couldnt break into those 1:31 times that the top 8 achieved.
Had great battles straight from the first lap through to race end, notably a long lap after lap good clean fight with Big G then with messr Shark in his Healey, who caught me after i lost a load of time battling with Big G ::) That Healey was very quick powering out of the corners and down the straights and i could only close every time through the second part of the track in the twistier section, stayed about 1 sec behind for a few laps but he eventually opened out a 3 second gap on me to the finish line. Good stuff.
I only suffered two minor half slides throughout the race, both at turn 1 under heavy braking but still went backwards down the running order from a high of 6th? eventually finishing 10th.

I dont know how the front guys are dragging so much pace out of these cars for that length of race...alot more practise than i have time for i guess :-\ Top driving fellas, amazing. 8)

..tightening front springs..

I reckon that was your problem then. Softer springs help the front-end grip, so making them harder would have induced more understeer. :)

Thanks for your support and comments.  I try to keep out of everybody's way - not always successfully.

One of my least favourite tracks with the choice of 3 cars I'd never raced before and I had only driven the Merc for a few laps after unlocking it (at Amateur Level) before discarding it.  A disaster waiting to happen - and it did.

Looking at the lap chart I see, in general, I was gradually winding up my speed in the first 7 to 8 laps, then I started to be lapped and recorded a 1.59 and a 2.12.  I did a PB around then only to be struck with disaster on lap 13.  The field was so strung out that having lost momentum, with 2 wheels off the track, everytime I looked in the mirror another car appeared in the distance and with such a twisty track I gave up trying to get up to racing speed and quit.  It was no longer fun!!

Still Sunday is another day and another track better suited to my crap driving style and if I can use my car of choice I hope for a much better race and result.

Bill

That's normal, only your best 6 results out of the last 9 races count towards your ladder ranking. The older events are still accessable through the racing history in your driver profile.

Making the number higher means tightening them? I can't remember these setup things.

Tyres pressure...can you only adjust front and back and not individual wheels? That reminds me.... must print out that cheat sheet that someone posted about setups.... now...if I only I can remember which thread it's in  ???

Woodee....raising the number 'stiffens' the springs. I think generally for these older cars, they work better with a softer front and stiffer rear as it helps turn the nose into the corners...ie reduced understeer.

Of course, too stiff at the rear will give you nice tank slapping oversteer (ie the back-end swinging around) so you have to get the balance right.

Tyres pressures are for both tyres at front or rear of car in GTL (stupid arcadey feux-pas...wake up simbin). You can get more temp to the insides of the tyres by increasing the negative camber. (ie -2 instead of -1).

Hope that helps.

Okay, here is my video of this race. And this was one of the hardest ones I made.
I had the erplay footage, an MP3 song and a video clip.
The video clip was too short, so I had to use the MP3 as music, but sometimes I had to make sure the lipsync was right, this was pretty hard to do, but I think it worked out pretty good.

So put on your cowboy boots and hat, and get ready to dance ;D

Making the number higher means tightening them? I can't remember these setup things.

Tyres pressure...can you only adjust front and back and not individual wheels? That reminds me.... must print out that cheat sheet that someone posted about setups.... now...if I only I can remember which thread it's in  ???

Here's the setup guide Ruskus posted:

Cheers  for that vid Ruskus - even spotted myself .... getting well up onto 2 wheels on lap 1 (that was my 1 v silly error - massive tankslapper) .... and then might have been me making an overtake later on.  Cracking vid.

Lol. The song is only 4 minutes long, that is the album version, and not even the video version, which is only 3 minutes.

I always try to keep the vid around 5 minutes so things are straight to the point.

This is the end of your privacy, people will recognise you on the street and ask for autographs. The cash will start rolling in after Hollywood asks you for a leading roll in a definate blockbuster. ;D
