Title: UKGTL Season 20 Fun Races - Zeltweg - May 25
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on May 19, 2020, 11:20:47 AM +0100

Qualifying: 20:20 (20 mins)
Race: 20:40 (26 laps)

Track: 1975 Österrichring, Zeltweg Download this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/h1obwsysqhsczx1/75Oesterreich.zip/file)

Cars allowed: Porsche 911 RSR 3.0 (all the standard GTL cars) plus this skin pack Download this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/226k8go6szcirvr/Porsche_911.zip/file)

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: Standing
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: simracing.org.uk Monday
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: IMPORTANT

We have discovered problems with some of the released skins.

If you downloaded the earlier skin pack(s) please delete the following car #'s

28, 058, 068, 0069, 069, 084, 83095 and 84106.

The current skin pack download does not include those listed above.

Hello together
sorry that I haven't introduced myself yet, but I can only speak English poorly. Everything you read here comes from the Google Translator.
My name is Manfred, I am German and have been on the "Altbierbude" for a long time under a different name. I am 63 years old and would describe myself as a rather calm driver. Winning is not so important to me, rather fair fun in the duel. I would like to take part in selected events with you sporadically.
I'm looking forward to the next race with you.

Many greetings
Paddler

Yep, two versions. Always were. In fact there are three versions modelled in the standard GTL. But the other (3rd) version is called "wide". Doesn't show up in the car spec table tho.

Standard car #81 is a "wide" version. I think it's to do with the wide rear spoiler.

After doing some practice on the server and seeing Manfred in the big wing Porsche, it appears that it's much faster than the others, at least 2 seconds or more. Why are we choosing numbers of the cars are so different? I don't see the point of racing if I have to drive a slower car and have no chance of victory.

What sort of laptimes are we talking about ?

I have only tried my (big wing) car, which I picked purely on looks, so haven't noticed any difference in performance.  With it, my best time is just under 1:55.  Could it be that Manfred is just an über-über-alien ?  :)

I hadn't appreciated that there was such a discernible difference between the cars. In fact I don't think UKGTL has ever divided the Porsche 911 into two types.

There seem to be many "small wing cars" using engine & weight of the "big wing car" (for example #3 & #853). Could be adjusted maybe.
For me in last place it makes no difference  ;D

That was frustrating. Got Misnoimis loading constantly, and he showed as in a mini...
left redownloaded the zip, deleted the bad cars, joined. still loading misnoimis, and no sound
so downloaded to the Nappe install which is a fresh one, and now joined ok, but no setup
and the car was not fun, spun twice, so quit

Results and replay now posted.

Can Paddler and Nappe1 please fill in their Profile/Driver Details/Country, then we can give you a little flag in the results.

NOTE: Results now corrected to show Misnoimis in a 2.8l car and not 3.0l as previously stated.

Oh, I see from the results that I was the only one in a 2.8. I just randomly chose #8, not knowing that anything other than the skins were different. That's why I was so easy to pass on the straights.
If there are other hidden differences between the cars in a one car series, such as big wings, then I think that those differences should be known to all.

Anyway, I enjoyed my race. Always someone nearby. People coming back through after offs, especially Rog, who repeatedly teased me for much of the race.

Not much for me to say about this race that is good. It should have been fun but first a problem with the car #9 that I had chosen and then my gear change which seemed to intermittently be selecting natural instead of third on change downs which led to me going wide and clipping the Armco quite often during the race. It had happened a couple of times in practice and qually.  I didn’t know when the gear would fail to engage so tried to use the brakes more to be safe but failed miserably. In the end I had no idea how to try and drive. At times it would work fine for a few laps which was very frustrating. I was going to pit and retire but found a couple racing for fun at the back, I think possibly with damaged cars so joined them. I managed to smash my headlights on Eifelblitz spinning car so was unable to flash drivers by for the last few laps. I have another G27 shifter but think that one might have had problems and that’s why I dug out this one. I have just noticed this is a G25.

Grats winner and podiums.

C U when I the shifter problem sorted.

I knew that there were differences but hadn't considered them a big enough difference to worry about.

And I would dispute that they are "hidden" differences. The car showroom shows whether the car has a small or large rear spoiler and the car specs clearly state the cars power and weight differences.

For the future series I'll restrict all entrant's to just one engine size. This will mean that some driver's will have to chose alternative cars.

Hopefully this will satisfy everyone.

I had technical issues so had to start last. At the start the car was like a torpedo - overtkaking car after car, and at the end of lap one i was somewhere 5-7 position. After that was clear that this time i had not enough pace and started battles with the guys. Every one of them (the battles) was great, so i've enjoyed the event. Great fair play as well. I know this is common here, but good to note it.

Congrats to the winner and the podium drivers.

Hadn't noticed the differences with the cars until Hristo mentioned them.  Seeing Kurt post a 1:52.999 time as his best, when the most I could do was 1:54.9, was quite a shocker - either there really is a difference, or else I must be doing something wrong in my driving or setup.

Had practiced starting and did get a good start. Fizzled out however, when I couldn't manoeuvre around a slow starting Hristo fast enough.  Lost a couple of places on L1, in T1 to Dan, and then to a cheeky move by Dimitar in the Bosch Curve. Then when entering the double left-hander, I got an elegant little tap, sending me spinning off - this is fast becoming a tradition!.  Once more, courtesy waiting wasn't practiced. Not impressed  :-\

Down to 15th and 2nd to last when I rejoined.  Made up places by other's mistakes and by a few overtakes into T1 - and by Tony most graciously waving me past.   Behind me, Nocatu closed in after an incident, but spun in the Bosch Curve, giving me a breather.  Slowly reeled in Dimitar, but getting past proved difficult. Slipstreaming didn't give me enough of an advantage to try for a move into a corner, and after a couple of laps, I got too close in the Bosch Curve, had to back off too hard, lost the rear, spun and kissed the barrier.  Lost me some 6 seconds and helped Nocatu close up again, so had to worry about a move from him, while I redid the hard work of reeling in Dimitar again.  When I caught up, he went wide in the double left-hander and I slipped past.  Regrettably it appears he tangled with Nocatu, as they both dropped back.

Up to 6th and not able to go further, as the gap to 5th kept increasing.   Apologies for not flashing a 'thank you' to those I lapped - headlights were busted.

Grats to Geoffers & podium.

Grats to the podium and all those who mastered these cars. I was unaware that there were any differences between the cars, but that is hardly surprising because I only selected my car a day or so before the event when I downloaded the car set and skins etc. I have come across this before in GTL and it always surprises me, maybe I should spend more time scrolling through the car options to check for differences? But as I do very little prep for these races anyway that is unlikely to happen lol.

It transpires ( only from looking at the results rable this morning!!) that I actually had one of the "faster" cars with a 3.0ltr engine...….I wish someone had told my brain ( and my car!! ) that I should be posting quicker lap times??
I would be interested to know ( or even see some setups ) about how you guys set up your cars.

During the pre-race practice and qualifying I was trying everything I knew to make the car turn in. The diff settings were tried at either end of the spectrum ( and in between! ), dampers were set soft and hard and switched front to back etc. Eventually I softened the front springs and stiffened the rear, and raised the rear end 3 clicks in an attempt to generate some grip on the front.  :-\
Things were very slightly improved but I must apologise for anyone who was following me in the race and was caught out by my early braking and slow corner entry, but I was at the limit of what the car would do. Any attempt to carry a few extra KPH into a corner inevitably involved a close encounter with the barriers!! By the end of the race, despite my pace which was at least 5 secs down on most cars, I had trashed the front tyres yet still had an almost unblemished set of rears??  I did not have the extra setup page loaded for these cars, but frankly I doubt that it would have helped me??
TBH I almost quit the race at around 50% as I was so frustrated with a car that I could not use, or race with, but I used it as a convalescent/training exercise for my sore shoulder.

OK, so perhaps there are just 2 type of cars after all, though I'm still not 100% sure.

Manfred managed a 52.0 in qualifying in the heavier, more powerful model. I could only do a mid 54 or something. I managed to go down to 53.5 in the race. I still don't see how I can be losing 1.5 seconds on such a track. Watching him drive during qualifying, his car seemed to be planted and he could accelerate fast without getting the dreadful understeer I and others were having, plus he could brake so late without locking his tyres or his car sliding wide uncontrollably. Geoffers seems to have found the key to that too, as he was into the 52s as well. I would understand if the car had many settings with lots of steps between min and max, but that's just no the case...

Someone mentioned the gearing makes a big difference, but I tried so many different ratios and was still way off the pace. It's a mystery to me and it's not like I have suddenly forgotten how to drive.

Initially I enjoyed driving the car, but now after the race, I just hate it. Once you lose it a bit, it just keeps on sliding endlessly.

Anyway, had good first few laps, moving up to 4th, gradually catching Daz, then I was suddenly 3rd when Manfred dropped back. I was just thinking that perhaps I can get second, when I went off, car probably got damaged, became even worse to drive, which then led to more offs and mistakes later on. At least Nappe was there to challenge me and we had some nice battles, even exchanging positions a few times. Would have been very difficult to do all the laps if I had  to drive alone with such ill-handling car.

Congrats to Geoffers for a flawless race, to Manfred for a great recovery up to 2nd and to Daz for 3rd. The latter two seemed to be having a great fight for 2nd at the end of the race.

Seeing Kurt post a 1:52.999 time as his best,
I think Kurt was reporting a time he had witnessed, but will be delighted if Kurt shouts me down on this.

Exactly - not my own time of course -  ;D

Far more fun than expected  :) although finishing in last place.
Big mistake during lap one let me go down to last. Later I missed the right gear twice
(my h-shifter is fitted with 7 gears and I chose the wrong one  ::) - resulting in one spin and once missing
propulsion which prevented the passing of Matt).
Later I had a nice drive with Dan (I could ever feel his breath and he generously let me pass very often)
and Mike at the back of the field with lot of mistakes but I enjoyed it.  ;)

& BTW: thxs DAZ for your setup I found online  ::) Without that I would have been even worse  :P

At least Nappe was there to challenge me and we had some nice battles, even exchanging positions a few times. Would have been very difficult to do all the laps if I had  to drive alone with such ill-handling car.

This was my first ever race with the RSR.  I have not been a big fan of Powerfull GTC-76 machinery and to be honest, it was my wife who persuaded me to sign in for the race. (according to her, racing has positive effect to my happiness.)

I did do some laps in Sunday to see if I was even able to stay on track and all of them with the exact same car. For the setup I upped gear ratios longer so that I would not be able to hit limiter on fifth gear and reducing possibility of oversteer on full throttle.

Before qualify, I had no clue how I would do. As I had no experience whatsoever how the car behaves with full tank, I did my qualifying with 65 liters in tank and was really happy already to make my PB. However I still thought that I was too careful by breaking very early and downshifting safely late. However that probably was the thing in race keeping me steady speed. Having few great battles with Hristo I sort of accidentally took over a second off from my PB. Most of the time Hristo was faster, but there was few spots where I could get close. One of the being final corner and few times I was able to overtake him for a moment to final straight. Unfortunately I made my only mistake in last lap which caused Hristo get further away and I was not able to challenge him in final straight. Nevertheless, good battles. :)

Overall all, very enjoyable race with excellent result. Thank you guys.
And oh, It did have positive effect to my happiness. :)

@Lasse. I think it was your wife's sweet way of telling you it was time you started saving a whole loooooooot a money to buy her a 911 for her birthday!

@Kurt, we sure had great fun racing together and within our league we did some pretty fast laps too. Look at your fastest lap.

Really was not expecting to do very well in these, I have rarely driven them before in all my years of GTL, not being a fan of Porkas & their lift-off oversteer traits. However, on this track at least, it seemed that it was not oversteer but chronic understeer that was the problem. Tried all sorts of setup changes in testing to try to induce some oversteer with little effect, but on the night the car felt different & there was a modicum of oversteer present. Also I think the key to a good lap is not to rush into the corners too fast, but to brake earlier than you think necessary, get the front gripping & then power through the turns.

Manfred was in a class of his own in qually & after I had messed up my entry into Sebring he took the lead & proceeded to pull away. Had Daz close behind for the opening laps & when I started to ease away from him I had already mentally decided that there was no point in trying to push harder & risk a big error as there was no way I would catch Manfred. Then suddenly there was Manfred in amongst the spectators at Sebring & I was in the lead. Continued to tenth by tenth ease away from Daz & apart from one grassy excursion exiting T1 & a scary moment when Kurt emerged from the trees in front of me, had a comfy run to the flag.

Congrats to Manfred, excellent recovery drive, & Daz.

It was a nice race. Many thanks to everyone for their fair behavior. At the beginning of the race I caught the wrong gear when braking Sebring and ended up behind the guardrail. The chase was a lot of fun. I noticed that most of the others did not know the 911 and of course i had an (unfair) advantage. I love the 911 and have done many laps with it.
I don't know many of your cars for that. I'm looking forward to the next race.

Congrats to Geoffers & Daz.

Greetings Manfred  :)

I just had a go with the wide and the narrow, and I was about the same in either.
I don't know if there is any actual difference other than in my head... but the narrow needed
a lot of setup time before I could drive it, and didn't seem particularly faster on the straights

That's my impression as well Matt, no difference, the wider car feels more stable which seems logical since it's got a wider posterior (ahem) even though I'm not entirely sure it's factored in the physics. The extra power of the wider car is not that significant as it is heavier.

With regard to the race it was fun but I made way too many mistakes. I missed a gear at the start and almost everyone went flying by. tried to catch the ones in front but throughout the race the car would be really strange in downshifting. In hindsight my ratios might have been too short so the rears were locking up. Every time I downshifted the gear would not engage, even though the gear indicator said otherwise; sometimes it would take a full second for the downshift to take place and that lead to some interesting excursions. Had some great fun along the way though and that's all that matters!

I am hoping to compile a list of driver's favourite tracks. The twelve most popular are highly likely to appear in a future series.

It would help me enormously if you could take 5 mins to list your most favourite circuits.

Please reply here https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=19941.msg364281#msg364281

Thanks to everyone who has already posted their list  :thumbup1:
