Title: UKGPL Season 36 (2020) 1966 F1 - Roy Hesketh - Jun 16
Post by: Rainier on June 10, 2020, 04:38:18 PM +0100
Season 36 Historics Trophy – Round 10 – Roy Hesketh

The final race in the 1969 Grand Prix series sees us taking another boat, this time back across the Atlantic Ocean to the Roy Hesketh circuit in South Africa. Located on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, the circuit was named after a South African racing driver, the late Roy Hesketh who died in in an aircraft collision 1944. Doug Aldridge, Colin Dove, Ossie Fisher, George Finch and George Shrives got together as a Consortium from Pietermaritzburg in the early nineteen fifties to first build and then maintain and improve the circuit.

During its period of operation (1953-1981) the circuit hosted rounds of the South African National Drivers Championship, and national Formula Atlantic races. The South African National Drivers Championship was a Formula One motor racing championship which generally fielded cars recently retired from the world championship although there was also a healthy selection of locally built or modified machines, and from the late 60s Formula 5000 was added to grids with Formula Two cars joining in 1973.

The circuit also hosted the Easter races - a festival of motorcycle racing over three days. Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene, Kork Ballington, Jim Redman, Paddy Driver, Mike Grant, Rod Gray and Syd Stacy were regular competitors at the circuit.

Please check the Season 36 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=822&theme=6) regarding rules and the 66F1 pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=852&theme=6) in particular.

A short lived race for me, in one that would be one the most fun of the season :(

Had a nice battle with Uli and Evil in the first laps. My 3L Ferrari was much faster than their Brabys-BRM on the straight. However, I was struggling to match their pace in the slower corners.

It was all going weel and fun until suddenly my game dropped to constant 20 fps on the main straight. I saw that Evil went off the track braking for T1. Hope it wasn't because of me. But if it was, my apologies, Evil.
I even managed to make the T1 without crashing, but of course it became impossible to continue afterwards and then I went off the track and retired even before reaching T2.

I had the same problem earlier in the GPL Racer, with the 65. It's been happening sometimes in the last few days, but since yesterday it's become more constant, sometimes barely staying 30 minutes without having a frozen PC screen or video glitch. I guess my computer must be overheating or the video card is slowly dying :( I'll try to find a solution to cool it down or maybe replace what is necessary.

Anyway, it was nice and fun to return to GPL and UKGPL this season. Still don't know how my schedule will be next semester, but I hope to keep racing as much as possible.

Thanks all the organisers and drivers for the fun!

Nice to race here again! With the flag dropping quickly, I gave it too much throttle and got a slow start, with too much wheelspin, allowing Tris by.

No matter how hard I tried, I could not pass safely - I didn't want to just throw one up the inside of my oAo team-mate and take us out before half-distance. We spent many laps nose to tail.

Eventually, I went off near 2/3rds distance and couldn't get back to him before the end, as my front tyres started to overheat. My gearing was also a bit too short, which didn't help at trying to get alongside, despite having a faster car.

See you all next season!

some nice fighting with axel before he went off;
Rest of the race was not much action, i was happy to stay focussed and drive it home.

Congrats Tristan, Iestyn and Fulvio  :thumbup2:
I had no chance  with the 2 litre anyway – but a nice distance fight with Fulvio – GRAZIE, and a closer with Frizzio – THX, in the first few laps made my race amusing. After I made friends with straw bales for the first time, my race was boring and I lost concentration ...
Hey Andreas, I miss you on the grid!? What was wrong with you?
Without you on the grid there were no thrill for the championship!
Thanks a lot to our admins for organizing this season, great job, well done.
I am already looking forward to your offer for the next seasons … :)

Did anyone have the relpay?

Hi Uli, unfortunately had to miss the last race of the season.  :(
Went to the hospital for cancer follow-ups.  :wheelchair:
Couldn't have done better than third in the championship anyway.
Will see us all again in the next championship.  :fencing:

Hej Andreas, ups ...
hätte ich das gewusst – dann hätte ich mir die Reise nach Südafrika sparen können ;)
Ich hoffe die Nachsorge ist gut verlaufen und Du kommst fit wie ein Turnschuh in der kommenden Saison zurück :)
Alles GUTE

Thanks for the good wishes. The first values of the tests look quite good.
