Having just had the straight-jacket of regulated 2.5l Formula 1, we can let our hair down this week with the ultimate in do-what-you-want motorsport!
That's right, it's CanAm time circa 1972 8)
We'll be using the brand-spanking new Road America from LilSki to let them stretch their legs on properly (I've hit over 220mph in testing on full boost 8) ) and hopefully reduce car/wall moments a bit.

If you have difficulty controlling these brutes (you're lying if you say you aren't) then turn the boost down to around 50% - Yes it's slower, but not crashing every other corner is still faster in the long run ;)
I'm going to punish you for 40 minutes this time out, which makes this a sprint race in CanAm terms - may the best survivor win.

Damn, I wouldn't have thought that from David Piper when we had the chance to walk around him and his cars at the "Ferrari against cancer" show here in west of France, an event where in the young days (2000-2010) the grid was quite open to everybody most of the weekend and so on.. (Once I put my cheeks into a Ferrari F1 of '95 or something if memory serves, 7 o'clock the friday, there was nobody in the boxes  ;D)

Still we don't exactly know what happened of course, but it's sad for sure.   :'(

Thank you Fred for the interesting reading by the way.

Hi Jorge, welcome onboard.
I've found your Steam ID on the server from your practice laps so that part is sorted.
Provided there is a panel above the lap records in this thread that says 'you are registered to drive under the name....' and has a countdown to password release then you're good to go come race night.

It doesn't say so on this weeks race announcement (My mistake) but race times are in UK time :)

I'm expecting a degree of chaos given the car choice for this one (hence it being a fun event), but hopefully you'll stick around for the upcoming Formula Easter season and beyond - you'll find us all to be a friendly, fair bunch normally :D

Nice to see you have a lap records panel ... i love this powerful cars and will definitely improve my lap times on this one.

UK and Portugal are in the same time zone so UK times works perfect for me.

Didnt know about the existence of those little formula easter cars and I just gave it a try. They are really fun to drive and should make close online races.

Thank you for the welcome. See you on track :)

Phew this beast shifts  :o manageable though (prob because I’ve been using DRM cars lately  ;D ). Only run it at 70% turbo so far, bit fiddly altering boost whilst wearing a Rift  :P
Great cockpit/seating position, feels/looks like the RS Spyders from more current ALMS racing   8)

This should be a fun combo!  A word of warning though...  If you see the brake markers and haven't started to brake yet, it's too late.   ;D

Welcome Jorge!!!

shame the grid was a little depleted compared to normal. Obviously only us hairy chested types could take it on  ;D

Made a cardinal error of having 3 glasses of Bordeaux with my supper on race night so was a little off my pace for a while  :P but gradually straightened out enough for the race though I was disappointed with 6th on the grid based on the practise times.
Got a decent start only to get held up by the car in front who seemed to get off the gas mid straight  :o and nearly rear ended him whilst taking a whack to the rear. At T1 a few got caught out by cold tyres and ran wide so I moved up a slot or two whilst nearly following them off line! Had a good chase and ding-dong with Jari, Jorge and boa? for many laps and gradually got to 3rd after some place swaps. From mid race, Jorge and co seemed to suddenly drop back about 5 secs so assume there was some kind of contact ? and I gradually started to close on Stefan for 2nd place, getting down to about 2-3 secs. But then entering the final corner I must have had a left rear slightly on the grass and as I turned the wheel it spat me onto the grass and I lost 8 seconds and my big lead over the pack. So I had Tudor in my mirrors for a few laps until I got my composure back to a 4 sec lead. But with 2-3 laps to go the tyres became very skittish and it was hard work on every corner entry/exit. I dropped my turbo to 70% and kept it solid enough to finish 3rd with Tudor not far behind.  :)
Shame Jorge didn't finish on his debut but enjoyed some racing early on  :)

A nice challenge with these beasts on a track well suited  8) well done Tim and Stefan on the podium too  :)

It was a good and fun race until minute 20 ... it was really nice to drive in a close race for many laps on this beasts with you and some 2 or 3 more. Some minor mistakes but allways in a clean fight for position. Around mid race you start to getting away and i managed to pass the driver between us (no contact) and increased my pace chasing you ... i was getting closer and pushing hard but then lost my focus and miss break point in last turn ... back on track but the dirt on my tyres made me crash the wall on final straight and steer was broke :(

But enjoyed a lot for 20 minutes ... congrats to the podium  ;)

you guys must have been tripping each other up a lot, as I did not had any pace in practice and was last on the grid. Made some setup changes before the race that made the car behave a bit better, but wasn't great.

I kept low boost in the first laps and that made me have a great start I guess. And not running wide at T1 helped a lot too. I was expecting everybody up to pace after some laps and me falling back. Just, that didn't happen.
I had to keep racing with low boost for a while as I didn't had enough fuel. ;D But racing with the Rift on made it so much easier to gauge corner entry, so I could keep it consistent all race long. And it is really life like racing in the pack to T1, great to see the cars in their proper scale around you. Great thing this VR stuff. :)

Did notice Tim waiting for us half way, but there was no way I could follow his pace. Happy I could do race distance with my new Rift on without getting motion sickness. And finishing 2nd with my poor setup was a nice bonus.

Best first lap ever  :D

fluffed the start and bogged down - check

sent it too hard into T1 - check

went too fast into the kink and took a trip along the grass - check

spun myself into the wall and broke the car rejoining the track after the above - check

To top it off I had a senior moment and then hit esc to the pits, incoming 60s hold with controls locked and 1st lap not counted LOL.   Heck it though, I carried on and even gained a few places as others dropped, that cars too fun to just quit. My tyres were toast the last few laps, rear end did not want to play any more  ;D

Hoping we see this car again in the future...

Well, that was interesting ;D
I'll be honest - I only ran this combo as we'd often wondered about what racing them would be like and the new Road America had just come out.

I'm glad I did and actually a bit surprised at the turn out, I know a few were unable to make it but expected a few more to try it none the less.

Qualifying went horribly wrong for me as on my full flying lap I managed a massive lock-up into turn 3, I was 1.5 seconds under my previous best at that point and still needed to scrub at least half a second to catch Max's blistering time. I knew instantly I had no chance so just pulled over and parked it as there wasn't enough time left to start a new lap.

The race start almost went my way - I'd reduced my boost to 40% to make launching easier. It worked awesomely for the first 50 meters, then I mistakenly thought that the road had caught up with my rear wheels and floored it properly ::)
Most of you probably watched me spear off into the pit wall at a good 70-80mph like a proper idiot  :-[

That left me with an orange nose and yellow rear wing on the damage display and also gave the slow starting Max time to re-pass me for first.
Both of us (and about half the grid) then proceeded to run wide in T1 due to the cold tires and we commenced what would likely have been a silly hard battle.
Sadly Max ran wide in the 2nd half of the lap and managed to put a wheel on the grass while giving it beans again to try and get up to speed again behind me.
From that point on I was lapping on my own and generally taking it fairly easy, about 15 minutes in I found the car had changed in handling enough I could now run 2nd gear through T2 more easily - that alone gave a gain of half a second every lap :o
A few laps later I carried way too much speed into the final turn and found myself missing the apex by a good 50 meters and ending up in the middle of the field.
I think that's what Stefan calls 'waiting for us'  :ninja:

At various points through the fuel burn I'd find the car had changed enough to force me to drive it differently, nearly every instance involved a marked increase in pace. Until the tires started to go off around the 30 minute mark that is.
My fastest lap of the race was my last as I turned the boost up to full, I was nearly a second ahead of my race pace by T1 thanks to the daft power and nearly exhausted fuel - but the tires were so far gone that I lost most of it by T2.
I think I only knocked about .3 seconds off by the end of the lap. How much of this was thanks also to my aero damage I'll never know.

Congrats to Stefan on 2nd and Mark on 3rd.
Well done to all finishers - I think that was probably the hardest race I've done in AC with regards to actually keeping the car under control.

Bad luck to Max on the multi-spin!

hah!

During the race I was thinking to try that but with 10 or so minutes left my tyres were shot and I knew it wouldn't work, so never bothered.

A very inconsistent race for me; I was very happy with my qualifying lap even though I was nowhere near Max and Tim's pace. In hindsight I used way too much fuel once more, I had about 30 litres to spare at the end and I think that affected my laptimes a bit. i botched the start as well, revs dropped and the car was about to stall; I managed to keep it together at the first corner but had some moments later in the lap. it's scary how fast the cars behind can close the gap even with the tiniest mistake.  Apologies to Jorge for giving him a small bump in the first lap, I missed the braking point and I could not avoid him.

The first few laps were very exciting but as the race progressed I kept taking small field trips which cost me lots of time. Each lap i closed the gap only to throw it all away a few laps later. Still, it was a great race, thanks for organizing Tim!
