Post by: Aagramn on September 16, 2006, 11:50:25 AM +0100
If you have anything useful, add it here....

.PLR file edits:

// view
Glance Angle="1.50000"   // changes look left or right angle to 90 degrees, very useful when re-joining the track (default "0.75000" = 45 degrees)
Glance Rate="12.00000"    // changes speed of view movement (default "7.00000")

// change values below to reduce ghost car visibility in time trail mode
Ghost min alpha distance="0.50000"
Ghost max alpha distance="50.00000"
Ghost min alpha value="0.00000"
Ghost max alpha value="1.00000"

Rename Intro.bik & GameIntro.bik in the MovieFiles folder to skip the intro animations and go straight into the game.

Make sure "number of visible cars" in the video options is set high enough. I had it set to 36, and with 36 opponents on track (+ my car = 37) the car next to me was invisible.

Title: Re: GTR2 Tips & Tricks
Post by: Aagramn on September 18, 2006, 03:36:30 PM +0100
That was offline. I qualified in 2nd, and at the start the pole-sitter was invisible! If you set it to less than the number of actual cars you're going to have problems. I wouldn't worry about frame rates. My system can handle 36 cars with most detail levels set to full, so yours should do even better.

Post by: AndyG on September 18, 2006, 05:04:43 PM +0100
Perhaps not exactly a hint or tip (so I'm prepared to be remonstrated with), but there's a PLR file setting called "Only External Engine Sounds". Setting this to 1 will use external engine sounds (which in some cases are arguably more meaty/exhausty) for the internal car views. Some will hate it, some might quite like it.

EDIT - Dave removed his reply immediately before mine which makes the first part of the above sentence totally nonsensical :)

Post by: Mark J on September 18, 2006, 05:18:54 PM +0100
Cheers Andy, will give that one a whirl and see how i find it. Was sadly disapointed in some of the in-car engine sounds.  :'(
Not speaking as a know it all gamer, i've owned both a TVR and a Porsche and both were/are loud/aggressive in road going trim (more so the TVR), yet alone race trim. You can even download in-car and track-side audio footage of an RSR from the Porsche web-site ....so no excuses  ;)

I know your guys have turned up trackside for the WTCC series so surprised you didnt do the same for GTR2  :-\...or did you and then someone neutered it in the sound studio for the game ?

Well that's just an utterly pointless setting then. Thanks for the hint about that bug.

To get your G racer lcd working with the G15 keyboard:

Look for your .plr file in your userdata (C:\GTR2\UserData\yourname) and open it with notepad. Search for "Write Shared Memory" and set it to "1" instead of "0".

RSC's not all bad ;)

Got this off RSC. To unlock all the tracks:

Make a new empty file called SDNDTG.DYN it must NOT have any other file extension on the end of it and must be in cap's.

Put it in the root folder of GTR2 e.g. C:\ProgramFiles\GTR2 or where ever else you have it installed.

No need to make a new player it will work with an existing one.

Thought this might come in handy for you folks that have GTR2...
http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=267948

It's a sound that you get when someone has entered something into the chat window even when you're not looking at it. Something very obviously missing from GTL and apparently GTR 2. Don't understand why they take away nice features like that. Apparently this works with GTL too.

Presumably in theory you could replace this sound with anything you like.

GTR2 PD Monitor...

This is an amazing little peice of software. If you're lucky enough to have 2 monitors or 2 computers, this is a fantastic application that shows you tyre temps, oil temp, fuel, speed, gear, everything you could possibly want to know. It works across the LAN to another PC or just on a second monitor.

No it does not affect the physics or anything, it simply unlocks the tracks.
Yes, rank is completed unaware of unlocking tracks.

:P  Thanks to who ever came up with the all tracks fix for GTR2 is a good man i didnt quite understand it at first as i am a total noob

so if you are a total noob as well i have made life a lot easier goto this link and goto the
GTR2 folder and there you will find a prepared file you may download this and add it to the main GTR2 folder your GTR2 root dir

www.r-a-t-s.co.uk

Just tried it and it looks as if when you download it to your Desk top you have to remove the (.txt) fromthe end of the file name
then you drag on drop it in to the GTR2 Main Folder the same one as the game (.EXE)

i hope this help out i am a noob and could do with someone else doing this in future as it took me about 1 hr it should of took 1 min max lol
Ill Try And Add mods to this folder if i think they are worth it so keep your eyes on this space
also if you think there is something that should be on it let me know and ill add it
many thanks longskater1969 aka 28th CD Motorsport Demonic Dan :P

In case you don't read ALL the threads in here  ;)...

Apparently the wear units in GTL PD monitor, as well as the other PD monitors (GTR2 and GTR1) I've found out are in fact magic Simbin units, it's not a percentage.

We don't know what the max value is, but when it reaches 30 the pit crew call you in for worn tyres.

Title: Re: GTR2 Tips & Tricks
Post by: mo on October 06, 2006, 11:51:49 AM +0100
dont know about GTR2, but in the original game pitcrew would also call me in when tyre wear reaches 30. The max wear figure in GTR1 is 60 iirc.

For the Endurance racer(s) offline.
As blimey doesn't cater for endurance racer like me
changeable weather is horrid if you need start the race with a wet setup
or with a dry one and weather changes, a setup which you have to keep for the rest of the race.. :'(

as one can't adjust neither wing  or tire pressure or change anything else then tires
here's a tip i have used in GTR as well now in GTR2
save game before you go to the pits, exit game and then move the desired setup to the
user save folder;
do rename it to:  "game you play".sve (see img.)
restart GTR2 reload game, drive to pit and you will now use the better setup :)

Widescreen on 4:3 monitors. It remove some of the resolution by putting black borders at the top bottom to make it look widescreen. Unless you've got a really big monitor then not worth considering.

I always select a lap time I know is competitive and then set out to try to always beat that time.

TrackIR Pitch Down Limit="-0.15000" // Min: -1.00, Max: 0, Default: -0.15
TrackIR Pitch Up Limit="0.05000" // Min: 0, Max: 1.00, Default: 0.05
TrackIR Yaw Left Limit="-0.90000" // Min: -1.00, Max: 0, Default: -0.40

TrackIR Roll Left Limit="-0.07500" // Min: -1.00, Max: 0.00, Default: -0.075
TrackIR Roll Right Limit="0.07500" // Min: 0.00, Max: 1.00, Default: 0.075
TrackIR Move Left Limit="-0.05000" // Min: -1.00, Max: 0.00, Default: -0.05
TrackIR Move Right Limit="0.05000" // Min: 0.00, Max: 1.00, Default: 0.05
TrackIR Move Down Limit="-0.05000" // Min: -1.00, Max: 0.00, Default: -0.05

TrackIR Move Back Limit="0.25000" // Min: 0.00, Max: 1.00, Default: 0.25

I also have a profile for those who want it.

Barred, what do your settings achieve/alter ?  I have TrackIR but havent used it with GTR2 yet  :-[

Wouldnt mind trying you profile if you dont mind.   I want to minimise too much head movement as i get motion sickness. Would prefer minimum/slow vertical movement but full side to side viewing (at natural head turning speed).

If anyone else has a good TR profile for GTR2, i wouldnt mind giving it a try, thanks.

Can one of you PC gurus please tell me if antispy/antivirus affect the game performance in GTR2? What about network efficiency? I have Kaspersky antivirus and Teatimer of Spybot running in the beackground the whole time. Sometimes I get stutters and 1 fps bug. Can this be affected by the software running in the background? My connection speed is 2 Mb/s. Or would you recommend to have protection up and running the whole time like I have now? Thanks.  :)

No Guru here but,
I turn all spyware, antivirus and anyother background programmes I don't need off whilst running GTR2, and still get the stutters and something like the 1fps bug ??? So no ideas from me.

Totally no need to have anti virus or Spyware running whilst your racing, so i would turn them both off.

They use up valuable resources and have the ability to suddenly throw you back to desktop during a race (as i found out at Magny the other night >:( )

Same happened with me during a GTL league race at Dijon, lucky it was mid bend with no-one in front of me, just took a straight line and drove staight off into the sand trap..... so no casualties thank god!!!
Wasnt funny...... turn them off if you can!

If you don't have a router/firewall I wouldn't recommend turning off Windows Firewall/Zonealarm or whatever other software firewall you have, the others are fine though. Remember to turn off any p2p filesharing stuff too ;)

I've had a lot of problems with Zone Alarm of late, it causes my game to lag. With it on I lag and warp all over the trach and get a "syncronising game" message and with it off I have no problems.

Fortunatly my router has a firewall, so I can safely turn Zone Alarm off.

Anyone know where the GTR2 tips n tricks thread went?

ut*s ;)

Oh wait, this SHOULD be the GTR2 tips and tricks topic but instead we are talking about firewalls ??? But it's still a discussion related to GTR2. Unless you want a seperate topic to be opened for every single question ;)

If anyone else has a good TR profile for GTR2, i wouldnt mind giving it a try, thanks.

rF has more FF settings, I did the same thing vice versa, and rF felt like an acadegame :-\, I couldn't spin any car in any mod anymore, the grip levels seemed insane all of a sudden. The strange thing tho, is that it made me slower ::).

Thanks.  :)

TT

No Guru here but,
I turn all spyware, antivirus and anyother background programmes I don't need off whilst running GTR2, and still get the stutters and something like the 1fps bug ??? So no ideas from me.
Are you also on a Pentium machine TT?

If you're using SSE, try turning it off (I have radeon 9700pro and AMD CPU, constant stutters both in GTR2 and Forgotten battles. Once I turned off SSE they went away). Simplest way to turn off SSE is (ATI users) via Rage3d Tweak.

Totally no need to have anti virus or Spyware running whilst your racing, so i would turn them both off.

They use up valuable resources and have the ability to suddenly throw you back to desktop during a race (as i found out at Magny the other night >:( )

I worked out that if you turn off auto update, it resolves this problem. Does with Bit Def 9 anyways..

You can't, because, if I'm not mistaken, they use the Magnelli (sp?) display and not the Motec.. same goes for the 360 GTC  :-\

hi guys saw in some other forums that setting up your brake and throttle pedals on 2 different axis is better, is this the case and do you guys do this? meaning you can use both throttle and brake at same time. Ive unchecked the report pedals on one axis in game controlers but i cant seem to get this to work. Any ideas?

Seperated axis is a must for me. I use manual clutch so I have to blip the throttle whole braking. Also having a bit of throttle under braking can make the car much more stable.
Really put it on seperated axis, as it will be faster.
What wheel do you have? Normally when you click seperated axis it should work immediatly.

Title: Re: GTR2 Tips & Tricks
Post by: Adam Parle on July 05, 2007, 09:25:05 AM +0100
You'll have to change the settings in game I think - GTR2 probably thinks you're still on one axis, so you might need to redefine your pedals.

Title: Re: GTR2 Tips & Tricks
Post by: Jure on July 05, 2007, 10:35:01 AM +0100
as per separate axis issue:

yes, it's a must!  ;D

if you have any other controllers hooked up to your PC while driving (saitek x45 in my case) game gets confused with axis, buttons and stuff.

so make sure you plug in wheel and nothing else when you're off to the races. ;)

---------------------

can't emphasise enough how important it is for all you guys out there using dynamic IP internet connections to RESTART YOUR MODEM & PC before you go racing online. i'm pretty sure we've lost plenty of drivers due to discos simply because their ISP decided to change client IP during the race (i.e. your line drops for a minute, then your modem/router connects again, but it's too late by then). dynamic IP is changed every 24 hourse (or so). hence you should be ok for 24 hours once you restart your modem. make it a habit, will ya?

another solution is contacting your ISP and asking for dedicated/static IP address.

Can anyone near their gaming rig  post a set of step by step instructions for game or windows controller settings.

From memory Mark the speed 7s should be like that automatically. You can easily tell in the controller options page by pressing both pedals and seeing if you can get full throttle and brake at the same time.

Just found this in the .plr file:

Half Rate="0" // 0 = super-high physics rate, 1 = normal

Can I switch that to 1 or will it cause some kind of problem/lack of realism?

Found this too:

Tire Sampling="1" // 0 = normal, 1 = extra HAT samples (*slightly* more accurate over sharp curbs, otherwise a waste of CPU)

And these:

Engine Emitter Flow="1" // Whether engine smoke/flames flow over emitting vehicle
Tire Emitter Flow="1" // Whether tire smoke/dust flow over emitting vehicle
Smoke Flow="1" // Whether all smoke/flames/dust flow over non-emitting vehicles
Raindrop Flow="1" // Add to enable: 1=flow over current 2=flow over other vehicles
Rainspray Flow="1" // Add to enable: 1=flow over current 2=flow over other vehicles
Spark Flow="1" // Add to enable: 1=flow over current 2=flow over other vehicles

TBH Tib, I think the only way you can gain FPS is by upgrading. There is a maximum with which you can win by tweaking, and I think tweaking the .plr file won't give you an additional 10 FPS.

Ok, I thought that might be the case. Thing is I've got every setting on lowest and have done all of the .plr tweaks, but I'm still only getting about 20 fps. At least I can actually race now.

For some reason the fps drops to around 3 when I'm in a gravel trap. Any ideas why?

Are you running any kind of antialias or other filtering, enabled from the graphics drivers. If you do, you might get some extra frames by disabling them, sorry if this has already been mentioned.

Title: Re: GTR2 Tips & Tricks
Post by: Jure on November 02, 2007, 12:24:45 PM +0000
Tibernius, do what MortenS proposed. You'll get ugly graphics but better FPS.

Also, if you're using either onboard sound or crappy sound card - go to "advanced audio properties/performance" (in winxp control panel) and set hardware acceleration from "full" to "standard" and "sample rate conversion quality" from "best" to "good". Should give you few extra FPS (again - worse sound, but better FPS).

Use "stereo headphones" as your primary sound device, also few FPS gained.

In game settings - go for lowest sound possible, don't use more then.. 10 effects.

You do have your PC cleaned of all spyware and such and you do kill all unnecessary processes before playing, right?

Out of interest, what is the spec of the machine you're running? If it's really pants there's almost no point in trying to get it working, but if it's half decent, you should easily get playable settings in the dry.

Ok, I thought that might be the case. Thing is I've got every setting on lowest and have done all of the .plr tweaks, but I'm still only getting about 20 fps. At least I can actually race now.

Out of interest, what is the spec of the machine you're running? If it's really pants there's almost no point in trying to get it working, but if it's half decent, you should easily get playable settings in the dry.

Posted this in the Graphics settings guide:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT
1024MB DDR SDRAM
Sapphire X1600PRO 256MB 8x AGP
Running GTR2 as DirectX8

I've disabled background processes (except norton internet security, it doesn't make any difference if it is turned off).

For some reason I get worse fps if I'm in the gravel/rumble strip. Any ideas why?

Just tried after lowering the sound settings (integrated sound card), and I can get 13+ fps at the start at spa, 28 car grid. Good enough to race at least. 25+fps with no other cars.

Strangely you have about the same or better specs as me, and with most things at max, with no antialias, I only struggle in rain :-\

For some reason this PC is slower now than it was when it was bought. It's still much slower than it should be though.

Sapphire X1600PRO 256MB 8x AGP
Running GTR2 as DirectX8

Those specs are better than my old machine, something doesn't smell right here.....
Scan your PC with AdAware and Spybot S&D - google and install them - they are good for checking adware and spyware infections. Or use Window's defender, they all do the same thing.

If it's clean, always disable Norten completely. Ctrl-alt-del and turn off any processes for norten or systemac i think it is. It's a big resource hog and runs in the background (which is why I love McAfee sooo much). ;D
When u start GTR2, ctrl-alt-del and right click the gtr2 process, set this to high priority.

U shud be fine to run GTR2 on DX9. DX8 is very old now and your X1600 should easily cope with it.

I'm not an expert on this.....but if that doesn't work I'm stumped. Re-format?

I ran a scan with norton, so I know that the only adware on the PC is BF2142  ;)

Disabling norton doesn't help, (it's running the only firewall), but I'll try setting GTR2 to high priority.

Another thing to try is to turn down the force feedback. Just as a test, try turning it right off and see if it affects the frame rate. I found that running with med FF improved the frame rate by quite a bit.

That could be it, the game always slows down when I'm in the gravel or on the rumble strip, or when I'm spinning. All of which use FF. I'll give that a try.

An extra 5-15 FPS by turning FF off. Good enough to actually race!
I'll set it to Medium next time I race.

when was the last time you did disk defragmentation and why aren't you doing it on a weekly basis?

as per swap (page) file goes: set it to 150% of your RAM size, both minimal and maximum value (i.e. custom size, not system controlled).

btw, it's a VERY good idea not to have page file on your system partition (c: )

I did a defrag a few weeks ago, XP says it doesn't need defrag-ing.

The page file is on the main drive because I've only got one hard drive.

I recently tried this small program out: http://majorgeeks.com/Game_Booster_d6148.html

It works fine, turns off everything you don't need for the actual game with a single click.

Free and no spyware - I like it  ;D

Does it work with Win7? I used to shut down some processes on XP but I'm not that familiar with Win 7. :)
