Title: UKGPL Season 37 (2020) 1955 GP - Zandvoort - Sep 6
Post by: Phil Thornton on September 04, 2020, 05:26:49 PM +0100
Season 37 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 3 – Zandvoort
The third race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The first race on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit was on 7 August 1948. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Zandvoort on June 19, 1955. It was race 5 of 7 in the 1955 World Championship. The 100-lap race was won by Mercedes driver Juan Manuel Fangio after he started from pole position. His teammate Stirling Moss finished second and Maserati driver Luigi Musso came in third. Racing continued up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

The cobwebs won!
I spent twenty minutes trying to get around Tarzan without a spin or running onto the grass, then gave up and watched TV!

That was an eventful race for me. I've not driven the Gordini much but I needed to save up some tokens for some of the faster tracks later in the season. Qually was as expected, I got a good start but I had to take evasive action at turn 3 and I dropped back. Had a good battle with Bernie but then I made a mistake at turn 4 and dropped back again. I worked hard to catch Fulvio, Doni and Bernie who were having a good fight but Bernie's 250F was just too fast on the straights and they couldn't get past. With about 5 laps to go, I got a great tow down into T1 so I tried to overtake but I left my braking too late. I got past on the inside but I understeered off the track. I think I must have distracted Bernie because Doni got past, sorry Bernie. After that I just had to bring it home, there was no time to catch up again.

Grats to Fran on another win in the Privateers and now leading the championship!

I had an incident with Evil(his error) but the worst consequence was for him.

Grats to the podium and all finishers.
Apologies to Francesco and many others who were impeded by my wayward Connaught  :-\

I think it all started when I fired up GPL and Igor. Strangely, I had to recalibrate my wheel and pedals, which is very rare.

Qually was OK and Alain took pole position, but although I was running quali on race fuel the car did not feel quite as comfortable as it normally does.
I had a great start and took the lead into Tarzan, gradually easing away.

But on lap 2 everything went weird at Hugenholtz  :scared: :scared: The steering wheel suddenly appeared to be disconnected from the front wheels and the accelerator felt like an on/off switch. Big apologies to the cars that had to avoid a wildly swerving car in the middle of the track!! I was doing all that I could to hold it straight  :-\.
The worst was yet to come...I struggled to understand the steering and gas for the rest of the lap which did not require the use of the brakes, so it was not until I approached Tarzan now following Alain, that I discovered that the brake pedal was also an ON/OFF switch and with the wheels locked I was going to take Alain and possibly Tago into the sand dunes with me!! I aborted to the outside and just avoided Alain's Vanwall.
No damage to my car but a few more places lost   :-\.

A lap or maybe 2 following Francesco until we reached Tarzan again.

My normal braking marker was the beginning of the black rubber marks  and I could usually comfortably negotiate Tarzan. This time I applied the brakes much earlier at the end of the pit lane, just in case there was a problem, and Francesco's car opened the gap as he braked later. But then I realised that he was slowing down...but I was NOT!! This time I had to swing my car to the inside to avoid Fran's car and bounced over the kerb and up into the fencing and ended my race.
Probably that was a good thing as my steering/car/pedals were definitely screwed and further problems were likely. It looks like my wheel and pedals lost calibration during the race??, so I will need to investigate that before the next race  ???
Again, apologies to anyone who suffered.

Sorry Bastian, I had fps/lag problem at start and rearended Dulima at T2, luckily his car in flames could continue. The lap after while catching some Gordini's that had passed me in the process  I kept inside at the hairpin following Bastian, but there was contact with him. I waited for him sandbagging myself at the following turn but I saw on Pribluda that he was stuck. So I restarted dead last after another sand trip and after some laps I catched Doni and Bernie. Doni was faster on the straight drafting the Maserati so I couldn't pass him. On one occasion I had to throw the car inside at Tarzan to avoid to hit Doni cause no brake at all. Then Phil joined the game and did the dirt work to slow down the Maserati so Doni and me could continue the battle for 5th. I knew that it was very difficult to outbrake Doni at Tarzan so the last chance was to outdrag him to the s/f at last lap. Didn't work for 0.02 sec.  :D

This time I was not surprised by Gordini's performance, I expected a good result with him. Because at the beginning of the year, in a race on Mybroga with mod66 in Zandvort, the 2 L models were much superior in performance to the 3L, this was a surprise. Based on this race I thought the car's performance would be nil for the mod55.
For me the start of the race was smooth, although I was very concerned about the start of Gordini, it is very bad because you need to choose in your setup, or you have the 1st gear short enough to start or you have it almost inoperative to leave, but that is useful in the tightest clamps. In my case I needed to operate this 1st gear on the track because of the 4 gears that our small, friendly and smooth Gordini has ......... I was very relieved that no one crushed me at the start !! !

Congratulations Alain, you were domineering !!!

Congratulations to Alain and the rest of the podium.

Congratulations too to Fran and Bernie.  And a great quallt time from Tago too.

My performance this year has been awful!  I'm putting this down to the fact that I'm currently unable to put in the hours of practice that I have been able to do in previous seasons.  I seem to be able to get the speed needed but I'm very inconsistent.  Too many spins.

I'm just hoping that things may get better, after all we are only three races into the season!  ;-)

Congratulations to our podium finishers!  Alain with a close win over Jonny.  Eddie a very fine P3.  Well done, lads.

Let me give a shout out to Fran, as well, for a fine P4.  Full marks on that.

By a mere 17/1000, I managed to hold off Fulvio for a decent P5 finish.  It doesn't get much closer than that.  I readily acknowledge that Fulvio could have pushed me much harder.  He's just too much of a fair and gentlemanly driver possessed of great skill and judgement.

Sorry to learn of Evil's controller issues that caused him so much grief.  Ditto for Tago to lose the lead from a duff engine.  Gross misfortune indeed!  :(

I spent the first few laps just minding my P's & Q's and trying to avoid trouble.  From a P12 start, it wasn't long before I was up to P7 by Lap10.  Clive Loyne's adventure into the dunes on Lap11 was something to behold.  MUMMA MIA!  That he recovered from that to score a useful P7 is remarkable.

For much of the race, I trailed Bernie in the Maser with little chance of making a pass.  I made a couple of stabs at an out-brake going into Tarzan but Bernie was up to holding me off nicely.  Good show there, Bernie.  Phil had recovered from early dramas to join our group late in the race and tried for dive-bomb pass at Tarzan on Lap24.  I saw him coming and gave him room but he overshot.  Bernie, too, saw him going for the position and swung wide in Tarzan.  This left me the inside lane and I pulled alongside Bernie.  Sadly, there was a slight touch that had Bernie off the road.  Sorry for that, BD.  You were a victim of circumstances.

The last laps were tense in my efforts to hold off Fulvio and made it by just a whisker.  PHEW!

Happy to share track with you ;)

For this event my son Gaizka and I were shooting together with the 55 in Zandvoort 3 weeks ago ... while I was training the Connaught he discovered all the 55 cars and knew the mod ... that explains my good 4th on the grid

Then about two weeks ago a small accident on my left foot with the trial bike had me in dry dock and the night from Saturday to Sunday I did not sleep because of a excursion to hospital emergencies so that they would remove a fish bone that got stuck in my throat ... this life is fun sometimes ... lol

So I tried to sleep a few hours and get to the race well

The thrill of starting well winning two positions plus a little slip from Evil left me leading the race  .... wowowowowow

Tiredness and excitement caused a piston to break for not braking properly ...

So thanks to Gaizka for helping me get the car ready and thanks to everyone for these great moments together ;)

    you'll be calling me Pastor Maldonado next LOL.  I'll be more careful next time

My pass on Bernie on lap 3 at Panoramabocht was much cleaner but he got me back at Tarzanbocht the very next lap. That Maserati was hard to pass.

Looking at the replay there was more than a little touch of warp in both cases Phil . That was the first race for ages when I actually raced  for the whole distance , I joined late having kind of sorted my GPL issues , still no race list but got in with the server IP , not raced 55's at Zandy so I loaded my Aintree s.u. and set off . I was still getting used to things during the race and drove steady because I still had no S/R available . It was an easy run in the Maser but I thoughrt  Donni would "have a go " in the latter stages but was surprised when Phil jumped the que , warp contact had me up the bank then I drove flat out to try to get back on terms but overcooked it on the last corner of the last lap .

Great racing with Phil Doni Fran Fulvio and the rest , thanks for the fun boys .

Thank you Doni, for me was a race without error and, exploiting the mistakes of others pilots,i have gained the position.
Probably, without the incident with Evil and the time lost, could be a P3 since Dulima have reached me in the last 4- 3 laps.
Anyway a good result for my standard not at high level.

Hello everyone and thank you for your compliments following this victory, the choice of my car was a good advantage.

After my mistake at SPA, I had a great need to score points, it's done.
I'm doing good tests and I'm surprised to stay in front, if Evil hadn't driven with the full tank he would have surely taken the pole.

Difficult start, I am as explained by JonnyO with a very long 1 and in addition to FPS problems at the start.

Evil and Tago pass, Evil goes fast and quickly walks away.
Following these steering problems, we passed him and Tago.
In Tarzan, Tago goes wide, bites the grass and breaks his engine.

After the race I quickly watched the replay because I was afraid to have touched Tago but fortunately not.
Evil behind make an exit so as not to get caught up and wasting time.
I drive well without errors and am 10s ahead of JonnyO.

I'm thirsty and at the start of the pit straight take my water bottle, hmmmm it's cold and it's good.
When closing the cap, the bottle escapes me and falls on me, a shower at 180kmh :)

I lose time and JonnyO comes back, very wet I am not very concentrated but manage to stay in front, phew it was hot !!!!!!

Thank you all, bravo to Brazil for this podium, bravo to the finishers and the organizers and see you next time.

 :)

This problem of FPS at the start, is being common, mainly on mod 55. I also had this problem.

In SPA then, it was only improving when the descent started, up front.

It's all right my friend

Thank you all for the podium messages.

Bravissimo Alain and Jonny

Although I dropped to 12th, I was lucky for most of those in front of me, to be with cars lower than mine

I was also lucky with some dropouts (Unfortunately)

I had a great recovery run and no mistakes

I finished well and happy.

I love this mod!

Big hug to all and be well!
