Title: UKGPL Season 37 (2020) Mixed Open Wheel - Albi - Oct 13
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on October 10, 2020, 08:58:54 PM +0100
Season 37 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 6 –  Albi

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2) & the newly released 1968 mod. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Group 8 or Group 9.

Round 6 means the second outing for the 1965 cars. We visit Albi in the Midi-Pyrénées region.  Racing first started on the Circuit des Planques in 1933, the pits and startline being on a short straight before the road twisted down into St.Antoine. At St.Juery the cars had to contend with an extreme hairpin bend, followed by a railway level crossing. The 5.531 mile circuit was shortened in 1951 to 1.859 miles, before being closed in 1955 following the Le Mans disaster. Racing resumed at the nearby Aerodrome in 1959 which is the circuit we now know as Albi. The Chicane du Sequestre was introduced in 1988 but we will be using the original layout as raced in 1967.

Tom,

18 drivers attended the last race so there should be a space for you.

As Gareth said you need to vote to join.

Fulvio can't make Tuesday's so Cooper's could do with a replacement driver but you can choose any chassis apart from Lotus or Brabham.

Fulvio - I have reassigned you as reserve.

Quick question as a reserve...

How do I know if there is space for me? Should I wait in Igor UKGPL chat and wait to be given permission? Last time I rudely just jumped in at Watkins Glen so I hope I didn't deny someone else the slot.

Hope to join you later as a back marker in the BT7.

Pete (Tobo)

The process we usually adopt is that we have 19 full time drivers. These guys should join between 20:45 and 21:00. After that it is a free for all, the reserve drivers can join if there is a space. There usually is. It is very rare for someone not to get a drive unless we have more than 5 or 6 reserves. We have 4 reserves at the moment so things are getting at bit tight (but we've not got enough drivers to warrant a second server).

OK, I get it. See you later. I remember the days of 3 servers in the VROC F2 club driving the F2 Trainers with a dial up 56K modem. How things have changed for the better.

Tom,
I have processed your entry so you should see the password.

We have a total of 24 entries but several drivers are only part time. For the next race I will publish the rule that reserve drivers should not join until after 9pm which gives the full time drivers a opportunity to reserve their slot.
In practice I expect that everyone who wants to drive will be able to join.

Help! I'm trying to join qualifying but I get error saying that I'm not qualified to join... 23 minutes to go :(

Update: Sorry, I was unable to join tonight. I tried various methods but I kept getting same error message. I could initially join server but then got message saying that I was not qualified to join. At first I thought it was because it had seem by practice times ;) I tried rebuilding the gpl65c.exe and even re-installed the track. Made sure that Albi was in my 67season (but I don't think that makes a difference). I definitely have the correct 60FPS patch but still nothing. Any ideas? I was gutted not to be able to join as this is the only chance in a fortnight I get to race online. How can I avoid this situation next time around? Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks. I hope you have a good race.

Update: I've got everything set up for the next round: 1966 Mod, EagleT1F, 60FPS, Clermont, reliable set-up, fuel. I'll try to arrive a bit earlier next time so that I can make sure I can join the server.

We always have the race server running for a few hours before the race for drivers to check their connections. It isn't easy to sort out connection problems just before the race. Apart from the race password, everything will be the same. So if you can connect in praccy before the race, you should have no problems. I appreciate this is of no use now and I'm sorry you missed the race. What I will do is set UKGPL_4 up tomorrow night with exactly the same settings as tonight (65s at Albi). Then you can try to find out what the issue is and we can try to help.

A difficult race for me, the Cooper is very slow and I don't have the skills to compensate. I was overdriving a bit to try to stay with the pack and consequently I dropped to a distant last and I resigned myself to a lonely boring race. However, I decided to persevere as you never know what can happen up front. For some reason unbeknown to me, I manged to catch a couple of people and I found myself on Billy's gearbox. I tried very hard but I couldn't engineer an opportunity to pass. Uli caught us up and I stayed wide in the last corner to let him by to lap me. Billy was equally gentlemanly and allowed Uli past at T2. I saw an opportunity to sneak past and I took it. Sorry Billy, I don't normally resort to dirty tactics but the Cooper was annoyingly slow. There were only 2 laps to go and I thought Billy would find me a sitting duck on the long straights and take the  place back easily. But I think red mist must have descended and I saw him make a mistake in my mirrors and I was safe.

Grats to Tris and Tom for being the class of the field in their very fast red machines but my vote for driver of the day goes to Alessandro for getting the BT7 onto the podium. A very impressive drive!

I had achieved the essential by keeping a good rhythm, in front of david rainier and alain maurice in particular, my best friends!
Doni was faster behind me, and wanting to let him pass, I slowed down and he harpooned me.
result, reset and restart!
bad luck for me, I had planned to finish without lapping   ;D
Bravo tristan, tom, axel.

On the plus side this race was rather more fun than Wiesbaden on Sunday.
I was being very consistent until I ran wide letting Tristan & Tom past. After that I just made sloppy mistakes every few laps. This enable Phil to catch up. His Cooper didn't have the pace to pass until he sneaked through a gap that I left for Uli to lap me. Totally legitimate move. I was looking forward to a chance to challenge for the lost place but missed my brake point a few turn later which allowed Fran to close up & draft past - another place lost.

Yes, sorry for that, Philippe.  I wasn't in a position to challenge so just stayed tucked into your slipstream.  I backed out of the throttle a little early for safety's sake but as you note above, so did you.  The result was grisly.

I had a blinder of a start jumping both Andreas and Philippe to take up station behind Uli as we approached T1.  Uli had an atrocious getaway dropping fully three positions to Alex, Axel and Bastian.  Axel and Bastian swept into T1 near side-by-side and I can only think that Uli figured that a shunt was at hand.  He stood on the brakes slowing to a crawl which caught me completely off-guard.  I drilled him hard.  Surviving that but now virtually stopped, Andreas could do nothing to avoid me.  A healthy butt-ram sent me into orbit and caused all manner of drama for everyone else trailing.  I couldn't quite hardly believe it but I landed back on my wheels so carried on in P14.  Groan...

The next laps were quite fun as I picked off some slower cars ala Phil's Cooper.  Got a bit of a fright on Lap05 when coming off the back straight and rounding Virage du Parc, I had a Honda cut straight across my bow from the grass verge.  A close thing.  This was Uli who'd fallen off the road and was recovering from P5.  This promotion had me up to P10 with some runners not far ahead.  Over the next laps, I closed to challenge Alain...going very well in the puny BT7...and Dave.  I slipstreamed AM for a pass and then Dave spun in the last corner to hand me P8 to start Lap12.  Well!  Far beyond my expectations considering the Lap01, T1 dramas.  A couple of laps later, I noticed a Honda next down in my mirrors.  This was Uli recovering from his earlier spin.  It was at just about this time that my vision started to fade.  I neglected to take my Restasis eye meds earlier in the day believing that I'd make it through the race without difficulties.  If I'm on the computer for anything over about two hours, the medication is essential but I had only a light day in front of the monitor.  I figured wrong.

By Lap17, Uli was right with me and I did not put up a fight in a pass scenario for the far hairpin.  I rode along in his slipstream til Lap21 when we caught a battle between Philippe, Andreas and Bastian.  Starting Lap22, Andreas got into T1 a little off-line and had to lift.  A gift for both Uli and myself.  A lap later and Uli passed Philippe.  My turn next.  Well, no as it turned out.  See paragraph #1 above.

Recovering from that shunt, I put in another lap before calling it quits with the eyes blurring over evermore.  Fun while it lasted.

Grats to our podium especially Alex for a fine job in the little BT7.  Great job.

Good morning all

Bravo Tristan, Tom and Alessandro, the best driver Bt7

Race mostly on my own, I'm not fast and wastes time every lap.
At the end of the race, I gain 2 places following the reset and stop & go of 2 playmates, I didn't ask for any.

I hope to be faster for the next one.

Thanks to the organizers ++

The formula of this championship is very fun

Congratulation to you Tristan, ToM and Alessandro
nice to see my Teamie Axel finishing on fourth but missing Teamie Clive – hope you are well.
Welcome back here in the UK ToM. As I saw you have had big fun racing with Tristan.
I was sure that I would have no chance against the two fast Ferraris and expect that I would lose places at the start, because of my long first gear but an additional hit from behind was not calculated. :(
So my race for podium was even finished after the first corner – totally nonsense on a track where overtaking is so easy. :(
My first catching up was stopped in the green = P15 but from that moment on I had a nice race, got to know the most of my colleagues much better . . . :)
This time my race setup was much too conservative, too long gears, too cold tires, too much fuel and above all, not enough top speed – but that was a secure way remaining the engine intact and seeing the chequered. :)
I am already looking forward to the next, finally a real classic track :)

Thanks, Phil. Much appreciated.

Different problem tonight. First I was told in gem that I couldn't join the race without the track installed. Weird! It's there and working fine offline. So, I made a backup of the Albi67 folder and downloaded a new one (without any updates). Bingo, the track was found in Gem and I was able to join server with 60Fps and no message telling me that I was not qualified to join. Albi without updates gave me a missing sky and a patchwork racing groove but at least I could join the server at FPS in 65 mod, exactly what I was trying to do yesterday.

I then updated Albi67 folder with updated graphics (I left other track ini files alone) and now it all works just fine. I can connect as expected and drive on a track that looks up to date.

So, I'll leave well alone and keep my fingers crossed for next time. I'm still not sure if yesterday's problem was related to Gem, Igor, a dodgy Albi67 folder or my stupidity. Whatever the cause, I'll blame a Windows update.

Thanks once again for your help and for running the server for me to test. This community is awesome. I'll just pop back to iGor now to try once again just to make sure that my earlier success wasn't just a one-off. Cheers.

Usually the fun of racing starts with such a tight ride,
I remember a race in Spa67 with Robert with BT7 all laps wheel to wheel.

Hi Cookie, first of all sorry that you are angry
then, yours are strong words and if there is some problem or doubt there is a report, writing here in this manner maybe is not the best way for learn to be sportsmen, and if I am so, why I let you pass in the lap 3 left you all the space? and why you in the lap 26 tried to tighten the curve if I was there? I hat to go in the grass for avoid you and for this I was wide, why you don't leave me space like in lap 3?
I m sorry again Axl and I accept of course if the mods penalized me, simply in race I was convinced that I didn't have all the blame

Here other views of accident where is clear "my will to throw you out"

I never said you intended it!

My intention was to let you pass and sit behind you til last lap!
