Title: UKGTL Season 21 The Top 12 Tracks - Rouen - Jan 20
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on December 03, 2020, 12:11:07 PM +0000
Championship standings HERE (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1072&theme=5)

TRACK #12

Grid/server capacity: 22

Track: Rouen '55 Download this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/7i1txap5lkg1giq/Rouen_Virtua_LM.zip/file)

Cars allowed: Alpine A364 (pm WT for download link). If you still have the cars used in Season 19 then you don't need the download.

Practice: ~19:20 GMT (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:20 GMT (10 mins)
Race: 20:30 GMT (24 laps)

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal
Pit stops: Required

Server: simracing.org.uk Wednesday
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: None

Who is? Tricky cars these, especially when the tyres wear. Fortunately a pitstop for fuel will be needed so a tyre change as well could be the way to go.

Anyway I think Tony may be intending to use different cars for each track in this series. (I could be wrong though!)

Aaahhh d'accord - assumed that the whole series would be driven with the Alpine F2 ...

So please ignore my previous post. Curious what will come  ;D

I seem to recall that Geoffers (??) posted a setup online during the last series with these infernal machines, but I cannot recall where he hid it. TBH ANY setup help would be welcome as I am struggling to even get out of the pitlane ATM !!!! I have reached Noveau Monde   once in 10 attempts and failed to get any farther.
Hoping to spend some time on the server this pm, but if I don't get any joy I won't compromise anyone else's race by hurling my car from barrier to scenery and littering the track with various components  :(

Ah! OK, apologies for attributing it to Geoffers when you were the good Samaritan.

I will have a delve into my tracks/setups folder but I think that I have done  a comprehensive re-install of GTL since season 19 when we last ran these little gems  :scared:

I don't think in this instance that my setup would help very much, I recall that I was never very successful in getting one of these to the finish without having some sort of incident. Matt seemed to have these much more sorted than I did.

Drove it for the first time Monday night, not easy at all....I think I was over 2 seconds slower than the AI cars from memory! That has not happened in anything for about 15 years....

FWIW.....
I have just spent ( wasted??) around an hour playing with and adjusting just about every parameter on the single setup page. ( If I used the 2 page setup options there were just too many parameters and possible combinations)

The only aim was to get a car that did not try to kill me at each corner and at each gearchange  :-\.

I used Geoffer's advice on diff settings as a basis, plus Tony's working setup, which were certainly better than the default but still not comfortable.
Then I remembered and used the setup tips document that Geoffers posted some time ago.......slowly going more and more radical as the results appeared to be taming the wilder eccentricities of these F3 cars.
I have now arrived at a place where the car is stable (ish) and at least I am focusing more on the braking points/apexes/gearchanges than on keeping myself alive  ;). I have no idea if I am mediocre or just plain slow, but at least I can run for 3-4 laps in a relatively comfortable and relaxed manner without testing armco and trees for impact resistance.

Taking a tea break now ( with chocolate Hob Nobs ) to refresh my brain, then maybe some longer runs to see if the tyres will support my setup for 12 laps or more.....probably destroyed after 6 laps  :-\

Just did a high 2:06, but if I can get smoother with the brakes ( or adjust the setup to compensate ?) there might be some more time to be found...but not much with my current setup/ability in these cars.

I'm asking myself if the car I have tested on server last night is the same car you're speaking because I didn't find any problem to keep the car ontrack with default setup. ??? I didn't remember times though.  We'll see tonight.

I was a very high 2.05 from memory, but 2.06s more commonly. Did about 20 laps or so.......

One thing I did notice is that the engine in the rear is at risk in the braking zones, the AI were able to break better than me and a small hit would cause the engine to explode. Also, the wheels do fly off quite easily, causing trails of sparks  :)

Well that was a bit of a disappointment. My driving was a bit untidy at places and I had completely forgotten how fragile these cars are. So a stupid spin and the nose hitting the barrier meant one wheel less and a dead engine. End of race. I have seen these cars race in France back in the seventies and this mod comes pretty close to the real thing.I think it is one of the best mods available for GTL and I even rank it higher than the original cars.
I do hope that everyone of the finishers enjoyed it as much as I did.

Hmm, a very lucky win, this F3 version drives completely different than ours. Anyway, I never really got up to speed, so I just tried not to throw the car away. But honestly, I don't like to win like that, what Ziu did to Manfred was not fair from my point of view! You can't just drive in a duel as if you were alone on the track...to drive into someone's side on a straight, respect!  ::)

Unfortunately once again i had a problem with the steering wheel which is my biggest problem now. I will report for the race tomorrow.

We also have a perfectly adequate incident moderation system in place so please use it.

@Micha,
Out of curiosity: which version of the Alpine do you like better?

Clearly ours from ABB. I was bothered by the brakes being far too good and the grip of the tires, so I made the brakes worse and gave the car different tires. Among some other small things. He drives m.M.n more difficult, but also more predictable

Glück auf!

Just to clarify, here is what our rules say

Under no circumstances should drivers engage in discussion of incidents in a public forum (including in-game chat). In particular, no attempt should be made to apportion blame.
A brief mention of an incident may be made in a public race report.

I have watched the replay of the Ziu/Paddler incident and I believe that there was no deliberate driving to cause an collision.

It's an unfortunate racing incident all day long in my book.

However it is up to Ziu or Paddler to create an incident report if they want to.

Quite an action-picked race. I was surprised by my pace on the qualifying session because i didn't had a single lap with less fuel onboard. I made great lap close to the perfect one and took the pole position.

Dan was quicker on the start and took the lead, but a mistake in the middle of the lap. I went in P1 again but he had a slip stream. Ziu was there as well and unfortunately the two of them colided and after that Dan's car went into mine and i was now in P8.

Little by little i was able to win back position and catch the front 3. I was now in P2 but unfortunately behind me Manfred lock his brakes and went to the grass and straight into my car. I stall the engine and lost so much time. But i don't blame Manfred, there was nothing he can do to protect my car.

After that i had another problem - this time the problem with my wheel. The wheel just disconnected for a moment before the hairpin. I was able to stop the car, as the pedals were working but stall the car and lost more time. And i had to adjust my driving style now that the wheel was turning no more that 90 degrees left and 90 right.

At the end is a miracle that i finish 35 second behind Micha and in P5.

It could have been much better though...

Race replay with camera and commentary: https://youtu.be/Y4us7p-YS0g

And at the end i just wanna say few things about Ziu. I am from a southern country as well and i now how you feel. Just don't take this situations too close to your hearth. :) Micha saw the things differently and this was the reason for his post.

I had a close look on the replay after the race, but bear in mind that maybe some lag could have made me and Micha see the things differently.

I really hope Ziu, Micha and Paddler will keep driving with us. With you guys is even more fun on the track.

And Ziu just take a a short brake and hopefully we will race again on the road. :)

Well that was an action packed race, really enjoyable & stunned to finish 3rd when I was never really on the pace until the final few laps.

Went with a setup that I hoped would remain stable when the tyres wore & this worked out quite well but it wasn't the fastest. Spent the early part of the race battling with Micha & chasing Matt & Erling. Lost a bit of time when I caught a recovering Manfred & locked the brakes into the tight LHer at Sanson & skated off glancing the barrier, fortunately without damage, but let Micha through.

After my pitstop had a short dice with Matt before managing to find a bit more speed & pulling away. With one or two falling by the wayside I was up to 5th which became 4th when Daz pitted for the 2nd time  ???. Noticed that I was now closing on the 3 in front & it looked like it could be a very close finish between 5 of us. Daz quickly caught & passed me & I tried in vain to keep up with him. Suddenly I was 3rd after some incident just after the last turn & although I tried hard to get close to Micha & Daz in case they slowed each other up I was still a couple of seconds shy at the flag.

Congrats to Micha & Daz.

No much to report from a short race.  Generally didn't have stability problems with the car, at least as long as the tyres weren't too worn and found it a blast to drive here. Classic mistake meant early exit; got too close to Manfred into the first, fast left hander. Had to lift off, lost the rear and went into the barrier. With these fragile cars, that meant game over.

Grats to Micha & podium and all finishers

Wasn't thinking I was going to be too competitive here, the car didn't really want to behave.

My fears were confirmed in quali when Dimitar did a stunning 2.03.2 lap, which I was miles away from. But, I had chipped away at the setup little by little, and the car now felt better, more planted and less willing to over-rotate mid corner. This meant I was able to push a little harder as quali went on, and I was actually over a second up on my best lap 2 or 3 times, but never managed to finish it off. This meant I knew I had some race pace, because my setup in quali was my race setup.

Got off the line OK this time, unlike Monday, and slotted in behind the front group. Made it through the horrible hairpin intact, and looked to stay in the tow on the drive up the hill. I could see the front 3 were very close together coming into that big braking zone for the penultimate turn, and sure enough where 3 went in together, only 1 came out ahead of me. But, I was right on the tail of Ziu in the lead now, and I was quicker than him I felt, as I was backing off to stay behind in the run down to the hairpin. Sure enough, I was able to go past on the long run up the hill, finding myself in first place.

Now, I was sure Dimitar and Manfred would be zooming up behind after the small off they had on lap 1. So tried to build a gap to the chasers, and I was surprised to pull away gently throughout the first 5 laps or so, building a nice gap as we got to the window for the stops. And was comfortable with this, setting the fastest lap of the race at this point.....

Went for the pits on lap 16 or so, hit the limiter, took fuel and tyres, and exited, all nice and neat, no dramas. Nope! Greeted with the speeding in the pitlane stop and go message....Rats, so stayed out for 3 laps, then went for the s and g, came out 6th. Was now too far from the lead, but over the next lap it became clear that 4th was possible, which Geoffers was holding. As he said, caught him and passed, and now was closing fast on Micha for 3rd. Then Ziu and Manfred had an incident taking them both out of the running, and I'm close to Micha going onto the last lap for the lead. Caught him, got past, but he held a great tow and went back past on the brakes into the penultimate turn. I felt I could get back through before the line though, so concentrated on good drive, and had a great tow, but got just a little too close and touched Micha, robbing me of my extra speed, and he was able to hold first by a small margin.

Great fun race, grats to all that finished as these cars didn't take much to break.

Found the problem with the limiter, new pc and the button wasn't mapped!

Came across this video showing what the track is like now.

https://youtu.be/L6X16nc1EiQ

Interesting to compare with the VLM version that we raced on. Obviously the top part of the track no longer exists but most of the wooded part does & the VLM track is actually quite accurate. Only parts I think are a little different are T1 which in reality is a little further on from where the track starts to go downhill & is maybe sharper & the run from the hairpin up to the Sanson LHer which has a little more curve to it. Also noticed the chicane at T3 on the later layout of the track is actually a little way around the turn whereas on the VLM track the entrance to it is direct from the previous straight.
