Title: UKAC Season 16 - Fuji Mazda 787 fun event - Dec 23
Post by: FullMetalGasket on December 17, 2020, 02:08:57 PM +0000
(https://i.postimg.cc/2S8Cj1hH/Mazda-787b-Fuji-Speedway-1993.png)

Well, it's not Christmas without a Christmas special!

Grp C has been getting some love recently so I thought what better than the best sounding of the group C cars on the recently released Fuji '93 course?

Race length will be 1Hr15mins (I'll be setting the server to a lap number once I've calculated it).
The Mazda is very likely to be able to reach that distance without a pit stop so I'll be trying something and fixing the setup with regards to fuel load. This will be done in a manner that still leaves you freedom for interesting tire strategy's to be used ;)
*edit* I've done some testing and had a play with my calculator - at a sensible race pace you'll need 113Ltrs minimum to complete the race. As Grp C cars are limited to 1 100Ltr tank we're stopping regardless so I haven't added a fixed (fuel) setup for this race.
If you run out it's entirely on you now  :P

That is a great combo! I should manage to join this one hopefully, even if it's on wednesday.

I have a 90 mins race at Ring '67 on monday with GPL mod, so my training laps will be limited to tuesday for this event. I hope at least to be able to smell the exhaust fumes of Tim's car :D

See you in Japan  ;)

Sorry Bob. 1 race of 1Hr15.
The event imported the last thing I wrote (A DTM post) and I didn't spot that :-[

Sorted now :)

Nice combo. Didn't even notice Fuji '93 had been released so looking forward to trying that. Rolling start might have been a better option though considering how tough these might be to get off the line and cold brakes into T1 (haven't tried yet). Would be a shame if a 75 minute race was scuppered by early incidents  :-\

Cold brakes isn't a worry in these, to be honest I find them more tricky under acceleration when warm! - but that might just be the stock setup.

I'll leave the DTM server up until Sat evening and then stick these up. That gives people time to try the DTM's out also.

We did a group C series the other year, I thought with the 3 cars. Tyre temp is always tricky.

Why not just run another practise server?

I remember a race at adelaide with 3 of the cars, that will be over 2 years ago now though - same with the longtail Vs short tail 962 race at Spa.
I'm not aware of anything else.
As for an extra server, SRW is using the Sunday server and I don't have a clue on seeing up a 3Rd from scratch

It's not trivial especially if you want to use Stracker/Ptracker.

great engine sound  8) and the track is very nicely detailed. Mt Fuji at sunrise on the tight left 1st gear corner  :tt1:  tricky track though, some nasty corners.

Server is now set and up - I've added a skinpack to spice things up a little. There are only 4 stock cars (based on 2 designs) I believe so I've picked some of the better skins out from RD and packed them together.
We still only have 8 cars total but it beats the replay only looking like 2 cars...

The skin pack can be found here:

No Bob and I use VR too  :-\ do you use content manager to fire it up? (I do, and I also ticked that grass tweak that the install page recommends - got lush green grass to cut up now with my off’s  ;D )

Is some settings different from default? Apart from time of day setting. I'm 2 seconds faster offline than on the server and brakes seem to work much better offline. I can't believe sun in the eyes is worth 2 seconds.

The server settings are the same they always are - also the sun is nowhere near the horizon when I went on after firing it up, or are you near the end of one of the sessions when this is happening?

I never do offline practice, so I never would have noticed a difference before. It's just this time I did some 20 odd laps before the server was setup, with 1.29.5 best. Then I got online and I barely broke 1.32. I went offline, and again easily went 1.29. That's why I'm wandering about default settings. Maybe the usual server settings are different from default AC settings. Would help in future offline preparations. Maybe there is something in the grip level Fabri mentioned?

As far as sunlight, in practice, in some sections of the track I just don't see anything through the dirty windshield. That's why I vote for next sesseion every time I get on the server and it's practice. Qualifying is better but still not like if the time of day is 12:00, which is what I think it was for my offline sessions.

I've reset the server to different times.
The grip hasn't been touched, it's the same setting we've used for years and from reading the settings is still far from realistic so can stay.

I've always found a difference between offline and online, with offline being alot quicker, i think the settings tie across either.

Chaps, I'm sorry but I decided not to take part in this fun event. Tomorrow I'll go to find a couple of friends, exploiting the last day in which our government will let us to do such a thing before xMas. Even if I should be at home mandatorily at 22.00 PM (21.00 UK time), because of the curfew, I guess I wouldn't be able to join the race in time for the start.

So I wish the best to every SROUK fellow driver with the hope that 2021 will be better than this!

Have fun chaps!

Qualifying is better but still not like if the time of day is 12:00, which is what I think it was for my offline sessions.

I never practice offline, cause I know that there's sensible difference between online and offline grip, especially if you set it on the max level when offline. You can easily notice that during your best lap recorded on the stracker, the grip was at 95.9% => http://stracker.simracing.org.uk:50041/lapdetails?lapid=216774# (look at the "grip level" value). To be honest I never seen that low value on any server, so it's surely something related to server or track settings. In my experience, when you go in practice session online, grip value starts around 98 %. Then it will get better as soon as more drivers starts to turn on the server. During race session that grip level value jump at 100%, so I usually manage to improve my best laptime of about 1 second, if compared to the practice session online with a low level grip.

However, that 95,9% it's particularly low level of grip, and to be honest it never happened to me to experience such a low value on the stracker, especially in qualif. session. But I'm just a good observer and I never managed any server on AC, so I don't know how and if this "low grip level" issue can be solved.

I did couple of laps sunday and grip level was 98 but it feel more like 60, tyre temps were ok and so on... Anyway it's slippery for all then but bit more traction would be nice.

I've just gone through the various server files on my pc and for some reason Fuji is lower than the others. This doesn't make sense as I always copy and paste from earlier similar events ???

I've altered the files and restarted the server, we're now back to a start level of 98% and you'll need to do some laps to grip the track up further.

For offline practice I've made a point since the 962 season back in 2018 of practising with lower grip and temperatures than you get on servers, it's always served me well as is easier to adjust to more grip than less.

Anyway, try it again and you should find yourself with more grip....

Lot's of info to process :)
Honestly I never looked at any settings, if I drive offline, it's just go. Whatever settings were there when AC was installed, that's what I would have ended up with. I don't even know where to set up grip offline. I'll probably just keep it online like  I have before. Will try the track again tonight.

Still plagued with white boxes in the scenery, makes it almost unplayable as it is so distracting. Using content manager got rid of it but hit framerates drastically and put the car interior in darkness, unable to see speed even with lights on. So two clean installs later, only putting the track into game things just the same. All other Kunos tracks are good. Rolled back graphics driver using DDU and safe mode, still the same. If I join tomorrow will start from back and keep out of the way.

Yeah, I noticed fps hit with csp enabled as well.
I think I turned off car instruments (uncheck enable at the top when you enter car instruments settings) to brighten it back.

When you say white boxes in the scenery? Is it the advertising? Don't these tracks have dynamic adverts or just fixed ones?

No, there are white boxes over the trees in the sky. With csp enabled, they are gone, and you have grass on the green sections of the track. Instruments get really dark, so I disabled that section of csp (custom shaders patch).

It's a shame we had some disco's on the start lap - I found that combo to be really quite enjoyable.
The Mazda is fantastic to drive as you just have to take everything very gently, it really feels like a Group C car as a result as you find yourself driving as the real drivers do on all the old inn car videos  8)

Results are up, and I've now switched the server back over to DTM practice. It may even be rotating tracks, but I don't think that has worked..

I had much more fun than originally expected on the race at Fuji. Shame that Fabri got disconnected very early in the race as he might have added to the battles for position during the race (although he had a pretty good pace). I managed to contain Maxime's attack and the fight at the end with Syd  Drake was good although worrying. I thought overtaking was going to be easier... It was a relief to see him going into pits.
Yet again, Tim's alien skills are beyond the rest of the human field... Congrats on such a great driving as always and also to Maxime for the podium.

I leave the video of the race here...
