Season 37 is over and the plans for Season 38 are almost ready. So we have some time for a few FUN races and to try something a little different.

No points to win, no moderating, nothing to lose. CanAm double header.

Track Riverside 1966 for both races. Be sure you have the correct version of the track.

I was thinking of taking part on Sunday. But unfortunately I found a few mistakes. Something is blocking the view of the 71 Ferrari and the 66 Lola only has 2 gears. Can anyone say anything about this?

Try a different Lola Andreas.  There is a nice red one, but it is fast and dangerous. ;D

No idea what's with your Ferrari, the 425ci Lola has only 2 gears that is correct - the 305ci has 5 gears

Your view is too far back in the Ferrari.  Move forward to where a driver sits in the car.  Lying on the motor is too hot to stay there many laps! :o

Yeah Martin, that was the trick.  :) Was not aware of that Seat-Position.  :oops:

I've seen the real ones at Goodwood Historics, and they are big, and VERY wide cars!  This is the only Mod where I use unrealistic virtual mirrors.  A very wide angle setting (FOV), is dangerous for Online racing.  Hotlapping as Andreas, will work for some cars, but Virtual is better. ;)

Managed to get the 66 and 71 installations running OK and joined the server with the quickest 66 car. Axel, Andreas and Martin were on with 71 cars. The speed difference is significant. It made me think just how fast technology progressed in the 50s and 60s. The difference in performance between the 55GP cars and the CanAM 66s in just 11 years of development is amazing. It's one of the things I like about the GPL mods, it allows us to compare cars of different eras in the same environment. Great fun.

If somebody knows Singion Hawk (he's hosting that one fun server), would anybody mind if he joins us today? I can ensure that he's a good guy and a fair racer, but he isn't registered or anything yet. Plus he would probably stream the race!

21,15 uk time, is the canam66?

It is an Open race (no password) so anybody can join.

These days anybody with GPL installed on their computers, particularly if they have the mods installed, are likely to be OK IMO. I don't think there is much risk of someone joining who is just intent on causing chaos. It was a bit different 15 years a go when there were a lot of GPL drivers who joined on VROC after having been to the pub for several hours. Pick-up races in those days were like "Need for Speed", it wasn't fun.

So if Singion Hawk wants to join it will be OK. If he turns out to be a trouble maker we will know for next time ;)

Yes, that is my understanding. Hopefully the server will be up for testing before qualifying starts at 21:15.

Missed 1st race

Igor seemed to hang when I tried to join practice.

Tried again but unable to join race. It showed me as being on the server .. doh!  Also mistakenly though 66 race started at 21:15.

I don't believe you've done this again. This is the second damned time I've been locked out of race where you have for days posted clear and repeated statements of the race's start time. I wouldn't care if you moved the time back, but here --- and last year as well when you posted GMT but meant something else --- you move the start of the race earlier, before the qualifying was supposed to even begin, locking I don't know how many others out apart from me.

This is simply unacceptable in even a so-called "fun" race. Again.

Sorry Pepe, but 2 races in 12 months isn't too bad? We all make mistakes, your criticism is correct if not a little harsh. We are all volunteers and provide servers free of charge so the only satisfaction the moderator's get is that everyone enjoys themselves. Obviously this has not happened on this occasion, so I am as disappointed as you. Let's learn and move on.

Well that was much better attended than I expected. There does appear to be a lot of interest in the Can-Ams. We had considered running a full 66/71 championship in Spring 2021 but we asked the drivers and they opted for another Sports Cars Head-to-Head. We probably need a few more Can-Am fun races to work out how best to run a full league with these cars. They are so big and the mirrors are so small, lap1/start line incidents are more likely than with other mods, so perhaps a single file or rolling start is the way to go with these machines. Anyway a Can-Am series in Autumn 2021 could be on if the current interest is maintained.

Sorry Pepe that your fun was spoiled, we are in the preparation for the 2021 season and therefore had not checked the racepost.
Unfortunately, I saw too late that the start time for the first race didn't match our usual times and then improved it.  

So now I still have 1 hour to import the races into our database...

Thank you in any case Phil but i was interested to the 66.Despite i have worked on the livery of both,the 66 cars are my preferred in comparison with 71. I asked because the time was suspicious,not the usual,and after your answer i have not checked again.

Sorry you missed the race Fran. You did a fantastic job on the cars, the liveries look great. I agree the 66 Cars look nicer but that is my preference for their classic shapes rather than the more uniform aerodynamic wedges used in '71.

Pity, everybody cannot connect with the change of race time at the last minutes.

I missed race 1 because of wheel calibration issues but watched over Singion's shoulder via his excellent Live Stream. Thanks for that Singion it is about time that GPL had something like this. The nearest we had before was GPLtv which was a line of coloured dots on a simple map of the circuit  :-\.

Race 2

First of all an apology and explanation/excuse for the start line chaos. I did not save a replay, but I suspect that it was my car that started the crashfest  :wacko:
When the flag dropped my frame rate simply plummeted to around 25fps and my car ( along with those around me ) moved in a series of jerky spasms. By the time  :-\ my screen returned to a reasonable frame rate I was spinning onto the grass and then got hit again.

Eventually I regained the tarmac, and was travelling in the right direction. TBH I did consider waiting, and if it had been a League race I would have, but I figured
 a)  if I waited then my car parked at T1 would be yet another problem
and
b) It was a fun race and no League positions were at stake.

I had  no idea how many cars were ahead or behind me, or what position I was in, for the first laps as my pribluda had a brain meltdown and only reagianed sanity somewhere around Lap 3?

On cold tyres I find these crazy beasts a real handful and I was very close to exiting the track at high speed on a couple of occasions. Gradually I found my rhythm and discovered that I was in 4th? place. I passed a Porsche down the long straight with the greater top speed of the Shadow and began to close in on the leaders.
Then Jonny vanished and after a few laps I was leading, without passing anyone  :o. Carlos was quick in his Mclaren and the Porsche of lalb(?) was fast through the corners and they closed up. The Shadow has great power, but useless in the corners and I was defending for many laps, until the chasing cars made small mistakes and left me for a quiet last few laps to the flag.

Yep Clive, at the start of '71 race I had 30 fps and it was terrific till the cars spreaded along and got 60 fps again. I did an offline test after the race and with 80% details I have 25 fps starting at the back of full field. With 70% I have 60 fps, but the cars miss theyr tyres and seem floating on the tarmac  ;D

But IMO it's only the fact that people don't think that it's necessary to push the CPU and GPU - so they stay sleeping and will not get 36fps in deep ECO mode...

Perfect weather, but some trouble fitting the car to the track. ::)  Noticed there were cars entering the pitlane through solid barriers, and some amount of warp here, on all Servers provided.  Warp may have contributed to race one, first corner excitement.  Perhaps a race on an undisputed track, can make wide cars and warp less so.  

Martin, maybe the connection problem was on your side, when you were ahead of me in race2 you car was waving a lot from side to side, while other cars were solid.

I confirm this, you were moving strange when I was behind. Please download the replay I have posted and look into it.

OK, I apologize for the heat in my post-race remarks, but I don't go into these events unprepared. I spent the better part of a day trying to remember how to drive the CA66 pigs --- a model we'd used in the off-season oAo series a year or two ago --- and spent another day downloading and trying to learn the CA71 cars, a model I'd never seen before. I practiced as hard as I could on-line and off-line to ensure that I wouldn't be an embarrassment to myself. To find that half of that work went straight down a storm sewer for no discernible reason was, as I commented in my post, truly irritating.

Still, I did learn something: I won't be found in a CA71 car on-line again. It is impossible for me to see other cars at all, and although I didn't have the courage to look at the replay, I'm fearful that I caused (or contributed to) a crash in the opening seconds of the CA71 race that screwed up the field beyond all recognition. I also apologize for that, for what such incompetence is worth.

After all is said and done, I would like to note that mine was the first vote cast for full-time participation in the Works series in the 67F1 cars next year. Forgive and forget, that's my team's name.  :)

I must also apologize,
I was several times in training as the host asked when the race would start. I assumed that this would happen at the usual UKGPL times.
When I checked the forum I found that a much later time was entered, which I misinterpreted as the start time for race 2.

BUT

Your preparations were not in vain, because we bring these cars on the next Sunday again at the start.
In RoadAmerica with a saver start mode.

Pepe I agree the Point of View (POV) in both mods is strange - without Lee's help I could not even see the gauges of my ChapE!

So I use Lee's "GPL Head Movement Patch" where you can move your POV to the position you are comfortable with! http://gplmotorworks.gplworld.de/

I don't know what the deal is here at Riverside but it seems to me that no matter what the circuit variation or mod used or league involved, there's almost universally a monumental T1, Lap01 shunt.  Both our races ran true to form as far as I'm concerned.  I got caught up in both.  Groan...

Had some fun chasing about in both races but finished rather far down the order.

Hope the roller start at Road America goes off without a hitch.  Fingers X'd.
