Post by: Rainier on January 06, 2021, 09:10:23 AM +0000
Season 38 – 1967 F1 WORKS – Round 1 – WATKINS GLEN

For the 1st round we go to the United States. Watkins Glen International (nicknamed "The Glen") is an automobile race track located in Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake.
It was long known around the world as the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for twenty consecutive years (1961–1980), but the site has been home to road racing of nearly every class, including the World Sportscar Championship, Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the International Motor Sports Association and the IndyCar Series.

The circuit is known as the Mecca of North American road racing and is a very popular venue among fans and drivers. The facility is currently owned by International Speedway Corporation.

Please read carefully the new rules (see "Handicapping") as there are several differences with the usual UKGPL rules.

If there is any misunderstanding, do not hesitate to ask me (answering this topic or by PM) until one hour before the race .

BUT, please, do not ask questions Sunday evening during qualifications

About the race itself, the main differences are :

- "Drivers must complete 75% race distance to score." (instead of the usual 50%)
it means a driver will score points ONLY if he complete 33 of the 43 laps (for Watkins Glen race)

- There will be 1 bonus point for the pole position and 1 bonus point for the best lap

- As this is the 1st race of the season, drivers have free choice of chassis  (then it will be more complex  ;D)

This Sunday, I will take my son to the entrance exams. It will be in the city of Campinas and I may not be able to return in time for the first race.
I hope everyone has fun, and I'm very happy for the number of subscribers for another championship.

Tried it last night, worked fine for me. BTW for anyone that's interested I fixed my frame rate issues by changing to Direct 3D rastas, even though I have an nvidia card, which seems to be against the traditional logic

Have you tried with a full grid? I can't believe...

Please check if you have the "disable intel speed step" checked in GEM+ settings (if you have any intel CPU!)

Hi Cookie, I have an AMD ryzen 5 processor...nevertheless the "disable..." is unchecked.  Not tried with a full grid, I only have issues when online, but there were 4 of us in the server last night at one point.  Hmm...you're worrying me, but at worst I'll have to fire the laptop up and use the onboard Vega graphics, which seem fine (issue is Prib doesn't work properly).

Cheers,

Bob

Ah ok Ryzen - I have the Ryzen3 but no problems

So go W10 settings - Energy saving and set it to high performance,
this is very good hidden and only seen when looking for the settings on the right side to ~ W7 settings  -

3 choices where the performance is hidden...

Congrats Raoni, Bob, and Tristan!

A quiet Sunday drive with little more reason to drive than points, isn't much fun. I entered the car for the race and had no engine sound. It's hard to believe I finished. I ran the engine too hot early in the race. I had it pegged at full rpm several times.

If anybody had any ideas why I lose engine sound sometimes while running my sound through an hdmi cable to the TV, please let me know. I think I'll switch to a dvi cable first.

It was a shame to see Clive wreck. I thought he might catch Doni once I got out the way.

With some engine sound I might have been able to move up the field a little bit. Qualifying was all the practice I got beforehand. I hoped to improve my times by the 2nd half of the race.

Thanks for the race guys.

Yeah Greg I wondered about your pace...
I would try another HDMI cable as I had several not so reliable. DVI with sound? this is rare...

My engine lost some cylinders with 3-4 laps to go so the nice fight with Andreas ended too early.

Sorry guys, I've managed to lose the server replay. Did anyone keep a client replay I can have? I have the exported HTML file so I could import the results with that but a client replay would be better.

Good to see you back on track Greg and I hope the house move went OK.
Driving without sound is no fun and very difficult IMHO. It was just as well that you were a safe distance behind when I lost the rear end in The Loop, or else you might have suffered permanent ear damage from the expletives and howls of frustration when I landed on my crash helmet.
Lack of sound does explain your rather "careful" start.
Early on in the race I was following another car for a few laps and felt that I could go a little faster if I could squeeze past, but coming up to the 90 I realised that he had braked before me and that there was a 100% chance of work for the moderators if I did not do something. So I threw ( throwing a BRM is not a recognised Olympic sport, but maybe  I would be good at it??) my car onto the grass and skated across grass and tarmac to end up in the ditch. Thankfully everyone avoided me.
Back in last place I settled into a steady rhythm and slowly reeled in Greg, passing a few casualties on the way. My aim was simply to get the BRM to the flag. It is not a car I have excelled in and last night was no different. Greg kindly allowed me a free pass and now I could see Doni ahead. Still not sure what I did different on my final run into The Loop that allowed the rear end to gracefully swing around and dump me over the haybales  :-\ as I was not pushing hard, just trying to keep the same steady pace of low 1:07's...............more practice and investigation needed!

It sounds like Clive and I met our ends in the same way and place. I too have no idea what I did differently to cause me to come off and lose my wheels. I was trying to take that corner sensibly and push in other areas.

I was amazed to qualify in the 1:05s as that was the first time I've done that in the Honda, but Prib always said it was possible if I nailed all my sectors. I'll have to take that as my positive for the night.

I didn't see any signs of any lap one accidents which is a credit to us all, but there was some very unfortunate language in the chat during qually, which was a shame.

Rainier,  Ricardo Silva is enrolled in Work only to have access to the password to send to GPLBrasil pilots by email, some pilots have a lot of difficulty with the PC and use it only to run GPL.

  Congratulations to the podium !!!!!
It's good to see Raoni motivated back! I hope we have a great championship!
Or very celebrated return is from our friend Greg Taber, see you next time !!!

Had a decent run last night although I was a bit off my praccy times.  At the start I jumped past Renato despite his defence and followed Raoni n Tris for the first few laps.  I then had a close shave as Renato attempted an overtake into the loop, where I was being conservative.  As I turned in he shot by on the grass and clattered the fence.  Pleased to see you could continue despite the hefty whack Renato, apologies if you were avoiding me I assumed you were going to stay behind.  I then had a couple of mishaps at the loop myself and was also lucky to be able to continue.  That let Fulvio past for a few laps until I managed to get back past.  At this point Tris was away and clear but I managed to keep it together and lapping marginally faster was able to close until with about 5 to go he too had an off at the Loop.  Kudos to you all the same Tris going so well in a Cooper, you must have been pushing like hell.  I then had a relaxed cruise to the finish.

Cheers,

Bob

I see the results are imported, but there are no points on the championship standings page.

As for the race, I was very cautious at the start and lost one position going back to 8th. A couple of cars retired ahead of me, so I was back to 6th when I managed to make a ran at Miele's BRM, passing him at the loop. I managed to pull away after that, but I was already 10 seconds behind Fulvio, and it stayed at 9-10 seconds for the last 25 laps.

As for spins at the loop you guys mentioned, there is a bit of jump while going downhill towards the loop. I found myself spinning out without control almost every time if I tried to enter the braking while hugging the left side of the track, right after going over this jump. If I went a bit more toward the right while braking for the loop, then it was safe.

So I laid down a handful of laps in qualifying coming within 2/10 of a second of my personal best for the BRM and felt quite satisfied.  I step away from the monitor for some time for a smoke and a pee and come back with about five minutes remaining before the session end.  DOH!  Doni in P17.  'MUMMA MIA!  These guys are playing for keeps!'  I can see right now that it's going to be a struggle to put points on the board this season.  A fine testament to the group, actually.

Off the start, I could see that Greg was having some difficulty and he let me by for T1.  After several laps, I returned the favour with a wave-by as on any given day, Greg usually has me covered.  I realized that promotion up the charts was only going to come from the misfortune of others so set myself to run at a good pace with something left in reserve if needed in the late stages.  As the laps wound off, the fallers started to register.  First Colin, then Ricky, Bastian collected by Ricky's wreck, Evil's misfortune.  Alain had an off to fall back within sight but was gradually pulling clear til he ran afoul of Tristan recovering from a spin in The Loop.  Unable to avoid, Alain was shunted off into the grails to lose the entire left side of his BRM.  Bugger that!  Lastly, poor Axel had the engine in his Cooper go sour and drop back to promote me to a final finish of P9 which was far beyond my expectations.  Better lucky than good!
