Title: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) Mixed Open Wheel - Killarney - Feb 2
Post by: AndyL on January 29, 2021, 10:52:22 AM +0000
Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 2 –  Killarney

For this round the MixOW entrants will drive the 1966 F1 cars at Killarney, a track recreated for GPL by UKGPL's own Francesco Molteni.
This track is still in use on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. It first saw F1 cars racing in 1960, when a mixed field was beaten by the two F1 Porsche 718s driven by Stirling Moss and Jo Bonnier. In 1962, Killarney held a non championship F1 race called the Cape Grand Prix. After swapping the lead many times, Trevor Taylor beat Jim Clark over the line in their Lotus 21s. Strong winds blew sand onto the track and several engines were damaged. F1 racing never returned.

This is the second race in the Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1302&theme=6)

Will and I have both experienced freezes and CTDs in practice at this track. Unusual to have it happen on two PCs. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm a little nervous as my last two online races have also ended in Freezes. (1965 at Cadwell Park UKGPL and SC at Goodwood UKGPL).

Any ideas as to how to avoid these?

See you all later. Pete.

I did 20 laps offline, without any freeze or CTD.

For tonight's race :
There is a difficult turn to the left, close to the starting line ...

Moreover, I am often sleeping at the start  ;D and always braking early during the 2 or 3 first laps, so beware ...or tell me if I have to start from the last position (I think I will do that) !

Already installed. I guess it's fingers crossed.

Pete, I noted in Goodwood65 replay that you and Raoni had a freeze while spinning in the same place on the last double right turn. Maybe there is a problem when the view is pointed towards the infield of the track in that place?
Have you installed the correction by Ginetto?

Sry, I mean Tristan.

Apologies to Phil and anyone else who was caught in my red mist. Not particularly proud of my driving tonight  :(

Nice going, Pete.  You cost me a good placing in a less than competitive car.  And don't give me any bullshit about 'overlap'.  I'd already nicely started my turn-in to the corner.

So sorry. I thought I could make it through on the inside. Can we shake hands and make up? Apologies.

There were quite a few incidents tonight. I suggest we all take a deep breath, have a nice cup of tea and relax. There are some lessons to learn so we can improve for next time.

I saw your two Honda crashing together ... I hope I had no responsibility in this accident.
Clive, I thought you will overtake me on the left that's why I stayed on the right until I saw you trying to overtake on right  :(

Something else, it seems William Benett didn't know the "blue flag" rule.
When a car is lapping you, you have to do your best for a sane overtaking !

Phew. Just glad to have made the finish line.  I quite enjoy the track makes for good racing, but its also an unforgiving place.  :-\

very narrow with some great combinations, it flows well so long as you dont even think about touching a kerb or anywhere on the track edges.  >:(

seemed to be staying ok with the bunch for a while then exiting a corner my Engine just died. took a reset and a stop and go and just watched all the fun from the back  ;D

Spilt milk I suppose.  We all make mistakes, Pete.  Move along...  Nothing to see here...

Morning Doni, much appreciated.  ;D

As Phil has already said, there is a lot to learn from this race, and as a semi-rookie I probably have more to learn than most. This is only my second season, and hopefully a full one, of racing online. For years I've bumped and bashed my way through a field of AI, only to be taken out every other lap by an over aggressive Mr Surtees. I now have to recalibrate and treat everything and everyone with so much more respect.

Racing online with you guys is a pleasure and I've already learned so much. My race-craft is improving but there is still a lot to learn. Six months ago I was sat firmly on the back of the grid and had to quickly learn the art of being a back-marker. By lap three, all I looked out for was blue flags ahead of me and you lot in my mirrors. Now I have to learn to keep a cool head and be patient when dicing with someone. I'm off to re-read the advice on on-line etiquette.

As for Will, he's still new to GPL and not yet old enough to drive a car legally on the road. Today we'll be doing a spot of practise and discussing the meanings of flags, especially the blue one. He apologises for his errors last night. Thank you everyone for your patience and support. See you in a couple of weeks at the gorgeous Spa.

Pete

promising Qualifying, but missed T1 in Lap 2.

Tried to step back to through the field, but these kerbses are horror.

cut the edge on the (mostly) straight while overtaking, lost it and got stuck....

Nice posting, Pete.  Much appreciated in its own right.

So...  Will is the younger?  Fresh meat on the table!  Yummy!  :)

Actually, I thought it was the other way 'round with Will the elder.  Keep plugging away, Will.  She'll come good.

Pete

Nice idea.

Maybe, you could also explain to him the meaning of this rule  "Privateer" drivers are allowed a maximum of one reset with a compulsory Stop & Go within two laps."

I had a look to the replay and Will did seven resets before he retired after 27 min ...and no stop and go.

I don't speak about the accidents with other drivers... !

Good morning all  :)

Complicated evening last night.  ???
Not having driven yet 1 time, I had planned a little test after my meal while waiting for the GPLRACER race at 8:30 pm except that a family meal came to disturb my organization.  :P
Result, no preparation and setup.
So I take the BRM 261 with the Goodwood setup but it is not stable under braking.  :o
It was at the end of the race that I managed to improve a lot, but I made too many mistakes and crashed into a better position.  :'(
Well done Tristan, Angex and Fulvio.
Sorry Phil again for the freak and see you soon.
Thank you to the Admins and respect for the blue flag please.  :)

Hi all,

Sorry about my disgraceful performance the other night. Please do disqualify me from that race and give the points to those who deserve them.

I'll be practising for spa. Got to learn I can't treat this like Forza.

See you at spa

Will...

As I noted above, keep plugging away at it.  She'll come good.  We'll happily make allowances for you.  More than pleased that you are with us here in GPLand.

If you truly are under age to legally get a driver's licence, you must be living the dream I had as a 13-year old.  That was almost 60 years ago.  :)
