Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see
cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7) especially the
rules about in-game chat messages.
(3) You will need to install Race Room Racing Experience from Steam, and have the Euro and American Track Packs for this series (And maybe another
non pack track occasionally)
(4) Please exercise caution when pitting as some tracks have a speed limit.

(5) Please follow the SROUK guidelines for using kerbs etc. Please keep 2 wheels on the track surface (kerbs do not count as track surface)
Excessive cutting of corners will seen as cheating and the results may be altered to reflect this.

The example setups are currently the Zeltweg ones. They won't be much different here, other than full wing, if they are not already.
Real F1 run a Monaco style setup here.

Welcome Skanda, TeamSpeak details are here https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3050.0

It's usually only Spanner and myself who are on it. I've signed up for crotchet lessons every 3rd Wednesday so won't make these races. If you join us for the GR2 and DTM92 races I'll be there.

I'll check them out.

Some of my least favourite cars produce my most favourite racing so I try not to rule anything out.

I'm just a sucker for anything missing a roof and mudguards.

Has anyone done any practice at this track?

I've managed about 30 laps and my best is 1:37 in race trim.

I'm hoping that's quick enough not to be a rolling roadblock!  ::)

See you all later.

Not too far away Paul, I expect race pace will be around 1.34-1.35, but keeping it on the track will be more important than outright speed here. I have managed a leaderboard lap of 1.30.6 on soft tyres & a powerful engine map, but it was a lucky lap & no way could I use that setup for the race, tyres would not last & chances of keeping it on track, nil.

Saw it, on the leaderboards. Happy to hear that it was not yr pace  ;D. Soft tires (1:34.5) Mediums (1:36.5). But already happy if i make no mistakes (be sensitive on the throttle).

Difficult car, even more than the FRJ

Yeah it's a handful this one. Worth it though. Totally Worth it.

I'm guessing that some of you may recall Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix From 1991

Let's see who can keep it pointing the right way on the exit the most.

What is the perfect power Diff setting. Max, high, standard setup or low? Not for speed, but stable acceleration out of corners

Normally very low, but some cars work best with max as they tend to go more straight.
For me I can drive these better with min

That was worth the wait!

Superb fun. Even with the drive through for messing up the start it was still a blast.

phspok was that you that passed me on lap 16?

I saw how quick you were out of turns 3 and 4 and thought I had you covered (pun intended) but that move round the outside of turn 4 was something else. :o

Respect!

I lost it at the exit of turn 5 because I couldn't quite believe what I'd just seen.

My face is hurting because I'm smiling so much.

Thanks guys.

disaster! well done Geoff on pole couldn't quite match you.

the start umm jumped it and then spun not good! so last and had to do a drive through!

well decided to just go for it, managed to get to second and chasing down the leader when ping I am in steam vr home  ??? >:( :dots: not sure what is going on! loving the Oculus rift s but at the moment it keeps crashing out the game every so often. redownloading all software and drivers to see if that fixes it.

another thing i though this was a 30 minute race but it appears that it was 30 laps?

Great race,

Drove always alone but with a slight chance to catch Geoff and Frex. Didn't thought i would only have 1 spin (lap 3). I even have the fastest S1 time, was shocked when i saw something purple popping up  :o :o ;D.

Congrats towards Jos, and welcome to Skanda, not the easiest car to begin  :)

Glad you enjoyed it  ;D

Yes, I either did a Dan Dare round the outside or rammed you, I chose the former.
I was running map 4 or 5, so it came out of the turn and up the hill like a scalded cat

Was the only way I could catch you after my selection of where to fall off places.
After I got in front and you went off I assumed, I pootled round having an easy life with map1 and 2
Then lost my front wing twice... I also had a drive through for a jump start. I thought I had turned
the protect against jump starts option back on... apparently not. But it didnt let me drive through
it took over and pitted me, I sat there wondering what it was doing, and then realised it
was waiting for me to hit return  ::)

Yes John it was supposed to be 30 mins or laps to suit. I am "preoccupied" with work at the moment
(that's my excuse) and forgot to get some lap times to set the correct number of laps.

Very pleased with my pace in the car here, not so happy with the number of times I succeeded in spinning it. I could almost hear Frex giggling every time he passed my car frantically trying to point itself in the correct direction. :D  These are quite challenging to drive, but great fun at the same time.

Congrats to Jos, who is rapidly becoming the man to beat in single-seaters, & to Toni & Frex on the podium.

Actually quite liked the longer race, almost felt like a real 90s Grand Prix.  :thumbup2:

Post by: Jos Ogos on February 19, 2021, 09:31:10 AM +0000
Thanks all, welcome to Skanda, and congrats to Toni and Frex on the podiums. Also to Geoff on his great pace. His bad luck with the spins worked also great for me although it would have been fun keeping that battle for the 45 mins of the race.  :fencing:
I leave a link to the video of the race from my angle here: https://youtu.be/_s19FLtgXCg (https://youtu.be/_s19FLtgXCg)

It was another good and lucky race for me with the 90s F1.
I was adapting the RedBull Ring race setup during practice and didn't get to test softs and low fuel settings before qualy so I had no idea of the pace I would have before we went on (and was running 3 secs slower!! than the 1:31s someone did during practice).
I was in doubt over the engine map but decided to go with 5 (and a subtle throttle strategy) for both qualy and race. I think Geoff was probably with a lower map which helped me hugely on the first straight...
It worked well and I managed to reduce significantly my times qualifying on P3.
I saw a few messages about the 30 laps (last minute) instead of 30 mins... And added a lot more fuel. With map 5, I should be able to cope with the extra weight... And it worked well. No fuel shortages this time.
The race started with a bit of chaos at my right and it was lucky that I started on the left of the track as my throttle management wasn't great at the start and there was also quite a wobble that would have thrown me into the wall, had I started on the other side...
Luck didn't end there for my race. I was overtaken by frex and back to P3 in the first lap but had a couple of freebies at the end of L1 and, to my surprise, I was leading the race from L2.
Hungaroring is not a track for overtakes and with map 5 in the engine, I felt quite safe on the straights. The attack from Geoff was pretty serious. He was obviously much faster on the slow part of the track but I could, relatively easily, retain him there and regain a safer position at the end of the main straight for the following laps. I think Geoff knew that his options for an overtake would depend on doing a very fast main straight and the throttle betrayed him with a spin 13 mins in the race.
From that point, it was just about maintaining the 9-10 secs distance with the drivers behind and avoid pushing too hard and making mistakes.
All in all a lucky and solid race for me.
Happy to take the title of 'man to beat' but I think luck has been on my side so far and this is hiding some facts... Yesterday Geoff was faster than I both in qualy and during the race... I think the key is in the balance between speed and a safe setup making no mistakes. I'm sure the following races will bring more variety as we all fine-tune our approach to these extraordinary cars.

All the best,
Jos

Finding a reliable race setup for the mediums was a struggle, I had to max out the power diff and stiffen the dampers to get any kind of traction out of slower corners. I see others also struggled in turn 15.

After avoiding the mess at the start I picked up a few positions from frex and John.
After lap 1 I just stuck it on map 3 and settled in for an extended hotlapping session. Geoff and John had issues so I eventually found myself alone in 2nd trying to hold the gap to frex. Jos was in control at the end and while I was doing my fastest laps I couldn't get close to him.

Congrats to Jos and frex.

Is "F1 1990" the right classification for these cars or do they belong to a broader set of years?

Official development notes refer to fictional cars based on F1 designs racing in the early nineties. Raceroom store lists them as specifically from the year 1990. Either is probably fine.

I have to thank Birger for flagging up the 30 laps race length just before the start. Wasn't sure that my setup would last that kind of distance so I went very conservative with engine map (map 3) and other last minute tweaks to just try and make the car as drivable as possible. That probably backfired on me however as although it was very safe, it was also full of understeer and very slow in the middle sector. This got worse as the race went on as the grip was so much biased towards the rear that the rear tyres hardly wore at all, whereas the fronts were wearing fast.

Shame I mis-shifted again early on (similar to last race) and lost touch with the leaders, but Geoff re-appeared in front or behind me several times to keep me entertained  ;D Sorry for holding you up so often Geoff, especially through that middle sector, and sorry for the last corner - didn't realise we touched there, hope that was ok. Another lap (or even just one more corner!) and you would have had me.

Congrats Jos and Toni.

I'm guessing that some of you may recall Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix From 1991

That was a bit early for me, but I spent many happy hours with GP3 and GP4 around 20 years ago! That's when PC games would come with thick printed manuals that I would pore over for hours.. Good times.

Fun fact: A few of the AI driver names in the Raceroom Formula 90 cars are tributes to real-life drivers (mostly hill-climbers), but the majority of the AI names are lifted straight from the original Grand Prix game as a tribute to Geoff Crammond. The Formula RR2 cars have them too.

Interesting to read the differing engine maps used. I used map 1 in the race with medium tyres & map 3 in qually with soft tyres. With my setup more powerful maps seemed almost undrivable, but judging by my race performance that was probably more to do with the inept driving than anything else. ::)

Never had Crammond's Grand Prix original version, GP2 was the first I had, still got it in a box in the cupboard.
