Post by: Billy Nobrakes on March 13, 2021, 09:56:30 PM +0000
Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 5 –  Interlagos

For this round, the MixOW entrants will drive 1969X cars at Interlagos in Brazil.

Autódromo José Carlos Pace, also known as Interlagos, is in the city of São Paulo, in the neighborhood of Interlagos. It is named after Brazilian Formula One driver Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977. It has hosted the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix since 1973.  The race won by defending Formula One World Champion and São Paulo local Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi won the race again the following year in bad weather and Brazilian driver José Carlos Pace won his only race at Interlagos in 1975.

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group and keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

REMEMBER TO USE THE V1 VERSION OF THE 60 FRAMES PER SECOND PATCH FOR THIS MOD.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1302&theme=6)

Curse these winged cars. I can't get a decent set-up round all of these corners :(

GPL froze on lap6 at Ferradura.
Shame, I was just starting to get some kind of rhythm.

Sorry Billy, for the contact on 2nd lap.
No worries David. I don't these cars often enough to get used to the downforce & my braking is probably in the wrong place. The first couple of laps were very hectic.

Curse these winged cars. I can't get a decent set-up round all of these corners :(

Thank goodness you could not find a good setup given the pressure you gave me throughout the race!!

Tris had this race in his pocket until he ran wide on Lap 1 and had to work his way back through the field, not that it proved too difficult  :-\. Great pace Tris  :)

I spent my quali time on getting the BRM race setup very safe and stable, intending to simply aim on finishing the race. A half decent start gave me hope and then Martin was in the lead after Tris's excursion in his usual exuberant fashion with Andreas close behind. Pete was going nicely in his Brabham just ahead of me and I was surprised to find that I was comfortably keeping pace.
Then Martin ran out of grip and I nipped past Pete when he missed a gear(?) out of a slow corner, so 2nd spot behind Andreas and much better than I expected.
Andreas decided that some wild flowers needed closer inspection and veered off the track leaving me in the lead !!!. Pete was never far behind and if you had given me a choice between a Brabham or BRM for this race, I know I would have taken the Brabham. The BRM seems too heavy and ponderous compared to the agile Brab, so I fully expected him to challenge me.
Tris's recovery was a little inevitable and I confess that I put up very little resistance as I was nowhere near his pace. The rest of the race I was watching the gap back to Pete and a recovering Andreas, simply concentrating on not making mistakes.
It was a great second half of the race and a 3 way battle right up until the last lap where Pete ran wide and Andreas blew his engine, so I had a whole half a lap of respite  ::). Crossing the finish line I discovered that I was carrying an extra 9 galls of fuel !!! must brush up on my maths!!

Quite a while since I tasted Champagne in these cars and it was very sweet.  ;D

In England, it's possible to get lost, driving to the racetrack.  In Argentina, it's also possible to get lost on the racetrack!  This must be where someone invented SatNav.

I sat on the grid with a fast Lotus under me.  Problems started as soon as I took the lead on lap 1.  I'd left 'Pitboardguy,' at the startline, where the track owner wanted him - not the best place to point the way.  And I'd no onboard map.

My meandering quickly let the lead pack close in, on the lead foot.  An unforseen curb soon allowed me to gain my bearings, while scattering Ford parts amongst the following.  Spin and detonation arriving in pandemonious unison. :-[

A quick 2 button rebuild and I exited the pits, to find a Phil, anxious to show me the way around.  We took turns, and I finaly stopped looking at pitboard guy, but turn 1 brakeboard markers instead.  This allowed me to sneak up on Phil's Supercharged BRM on the final lap.  To succeed, I determined to attack the scenery, rather than the car.  This cunning distraction worked, and my battered Lotus somehow crossed the line ahead.  8)

Tremendous race - sorry to see the chequers.  Will probably know the track backwards next time.

This was much better than my Silverstone experience. There I qualified well only to have a freeze whilst in the pits and then I missed the start of the race altogether.

Quali went better than expected. Maddog speaks of getting lost but Tristan clearly knows a shortcut which he's not telling us about. Wow! What ridiculous speed he has. Still, EvilClive was showing me the way round this time. As he suspected, I missed a gear on the slowest part of the track. Should I use 1st or stick in 2nd? 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd... in the end I missed them both and ended up with a box of neutrals letting him rush by on the inside.

No matter what I tried I could not catch him despite getting close enough to change his gearbox-oil on a few occasions. I had Anreas bearing down on me but I managed to keep my cool until a silly slip with a couple of laps to go ended up in a little bit of contact which shoved me onto the grass. Thankfully I had enough of a gap to cling on to 4th but I blasted past him just before the finish line due to his blown engine. Andreas, so frustating for you - the third place was really yours at that stage.

I have no idea how much fuel I was carrying at the end as I did not check but I will make a mental note to do so in the future. Thanks once again to everyone here at UKGPL for making my first full year of racing so pleasurable. I've learnt a lot so far - mostly about race-craft. Yesterday's lesson was one in patience. In the past I've made silly mistakes by trying to win on Lap 1. I've learned to bide my time and learn from other drivers so I'm really happy with the result at Interlagos. (The scariest moment I had was when following Tris into a bend - I tried to copy his style of chucking it in completely sideways. Another lesson learned - don't copy Tris.)

Clive and Andreas - thanks for the race yesterday. One of my favourite GPL rides to date. See you next time.

Yes it was an entertaining race Martin. You were all over my gearbox for the last 4 laps but when you shot past me at Ferradura on the last lap and disappeared onto the in-field in a cloud of grass and mud I thought I was home and dry :w00t:. But somehow you recovered and I was surprised to see you on my tail again by Sargento. I tried by best to keep you behind but I made only my second mistake of the evening (the first one was Lap 1 T1 on cold tyres) when I missed my braking at Cotovelo and you were through. Grats you deserved the P5.

I was pleased to see Clive do well after some disappointing results recently. Hopefully he is starting to master the H-Shifter. :cursing:

Most racers would know, Emerson did not win his home Grand Prix in Argentina. :-X  If they had not invented calendars before 1969, I would have arrived to an empty track.

Such can happen when thoughts are filled by an exciting race. :-X

The race report arrived unannounced.  It is assumed there is one rule for all.  If resets do not now require a stop in the pitlane, and/or pitbox, the rule wording should be changed to : 'Drive through penalty'.
