Title: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) 1967 F1 Sprint (Privateers) - Tripoli - Mar 21
Post by: AndyL on March 17, 2021, 10:55:03 AM +0000
Season 38 – 1967 F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 6 – Tripoli

For the 6th round we are going to Libya. We visit the very fast circuit at Mellaha Lake, Tripoli. The track was a 13.140 kilometre (8.165 mi) long affair situated in a salt basin between Tripoli, Suq al Jum'ah and Tajura and around the Mellaha Air Base. The track's most distinctive landmark was a brilliant white concrete tower situated across from a large front stretch grandstand that could hold up to ten thousand people. Mellaha Lake was equipped with starting lights, an innovation, and the additional amenities rivalled the best that continental European circuits had to offer. Back in the late thirties this was the fastest track of the world.

Hi All,

I shall be taking the BRM for this one. Along with the Honda and less so the Eagle these are the least driven of all the GPL 67 cars for me.

I wondered if I could get some help.. GPL states the BRM makes max power at 10,000 RPM.  My question is what would the safest Max RPM be in the race?

The car revs to 11K or more really easy.  would a max of 10,500 be OK. or will it run higher? I realise at all times higher revs can be dangerous so i do watch temps etc.

problem Im having is a cant reach a decent top speed without running the revs higher than 10K. If i use taller gears the car wont reach max speed and seems to die at 10k @ 195-6 MPH. if I let it rev over 10k with shorter gearing then it makes 198 MPH or so.

so while watching for safe temps etc.  So what kind of figures re the  BRM P115 have you Intepid BRM pilots seen as a maximum top speed and Revs at tracks like Tripoli or Spa.

Im getting to like the BRM. im trying to make a stable setup. but finding it a bit difficult to get the old girl to turn in without silly settings. love the sound and the 6 gears.

perhaps some setup and gearing ideas?? all information gladly recieved

Hi Paul

I'm no BRM Guru by any means , but in my limited experience I think you need to reduce the number of clutches and the ramp angles , try say 3 or 4 clutches with a 60/45 diff .

Front /rear roll bar settings will have a large effect too , or rather the ratio between front to rear , try raising the rear to say 100lb ( I,m talking from the default set up here ) .

High engine temps doesn't seem to matter much ,but be careful with gear shifts and over revving , no speed shifting ! I often find other peoples setups just dont work for me though I do use them as a guide for gear ratios etc. most of the ones you can D/L are hot lappers anyway , not much use in race trim .

Hope this load of cobblers helps in some way and good luck in the race .

P.S
Evil did a thread on setups somewhere , might be worth a read .

Hi Bernie.

Thanks for that mate.

Will give the diff and clutch settings a go. I also think upping the rear bar will help a lot.

Had some great advice from Clive so will try a combination of both settings.

Have been advised to take a look at Roberts recent BRM laps.

Blimey.... what am I up to.. all this prep and practice

Oh dear this is getting serious ????

Muhahahahahaha,  :shifty: and another poor innocent is sucked into the bottomless pool that is GPL. Say goodbye to your family while you still have the wits to speak coherently.  :scared:

GPL swings and roundabouts , what you lose in family time you gain in hemeroids   :whistling:

LOL Clive. I've been enjoying and racing GPL since I was in my late 30s. I'm 63 now. But I think I was already a bumbling , dribbling  incoherent wreck when I started..

So you can imagine what I'm like now.

Luckily Bernie, although GPL has undoubtedly taken its toll on my poor soul and body, I have still so far managed to elude the wrath of 'ol Farmer Giles.

Right then,

Thanks to the various help and advice I'm ready for tonight. Feel pretty much at home with the BRM now, After a fair bit of practice I've got a reasonable idea of my way around the place and the car is pretty decent. Got a fair setup and decent gearing.

I'm now able to better the 55 cars times around here now it's a shame that I'm in a 67 car otherwise I would be a force to be reckoned with!!.

Can't complain as over the last three evenings I've managed to lower my PB by 8secs, 4secs and 3 seconds respectively.

Sadly I've run out of time to challenge the formula 2 times

My plan as always is to have some fun and finish the race. Se you all tonight.

Paul.

P.s. thanks Clive & Bernie... I owe you guys a cold one !

Very frustrated. Last race leading I was disconnected. Today I didn't make any mistakes, I was just managing. I passed Phil and Philip doing an impeccable race, until on the last lap I miss him. .I don't consider myself guilty. But that can't. I had a straight line ahead. Difficult.

Phew what a crazy race. I couldn't get anywhere near Ricardo and Philippe in qually. So I knew I'd need to stay close and get a tow if I was to stay with them. I managed to keep close enough to keep Philippe in sight whilst swapping places with Ricardo. My car seemed a bit down on top speed (especially compared to Albert :o. I'll have to look at my setup). Anyway I had to push very hard to stay in touch and consequently I made a few mistakes which dropped me back. On the last lap I just managed to catch up to Ricardo (again!) and I was trying to work out how I would get past. Philippe was about 300m ahead so I thought we'd have no chance of making that up in 1 lap. However, Philippe made an unforced error at the first sharp right hander and we were on him. This set up a mad dash to the flag. Unfortunately Philippe and Ricardo had a shunt at the next difficult right hander. I managed to avoid the carnage but I ran wide and took a wheel off on the wall  ::) . I tried to limp home on 3 wheels but couldn't make it and had to Shift-R. I did a S&G before the finish line.

Another hectic race at this track after the outing in the 55s last week. It must have been an incredible track in the 1930s.

Congratulations to Albert on a well deserved win!!

It was a great race until the last half lap Ricardo. I'll raise an incident report and the moderator can have a look at it. All three of us were racing on the limit, it would have been amazing to have a 3 car sprint to the line. I'm sure Philippe is disappointed too, he drove an impeccable race until he ran wide at the first right hander on the last lap. It is very hard to maintain concentration when leading for the whole race.

Dissapointing race for me , decided 2nd gear was too low for the first right hander and was losing time there , so decided to go up a notch for the race , big mistake , maybe I selected  2 cogs by mistake , who knows ?

then when the race starts I have no OS display , no indication of gears, speed, tyre temps, fuel etc etc . I then make a pigs ear of T1 with the stupid 2nd gear and drop 1/2 a lap down on the field . my speed in the slower corners was compromised with the gearing and unable to make up ground . On the bright side I learned a lot about the Beast of Bourn or rather what not to do before a race  ::)

Sorry to see Paul spectating from the hilltops ,  hope you enjoyed the view  . I was hoping to catch up and have someone to race ;D

Rather annoying. I put in a qualifying which would have been P3 on the grid but the race stewards chose to ignore this and - to add insult to injury - start my car at the back of the grid.
This track is made for the Eagle & I was able to climb as far as 7th place by edging ahead of Leo. Just as things were starting to improve I missed the braking point at the first right hander & run wide. Leo, Dulima & John pinched their places back and there just wasn't enough laps to get back on their tails.

I've been to this track before & not a fan (athough it looks nice of course).

Similarly, I've avoided the BRM (or any other car with 6 gears) as much as possible, so seemed a good opportunity to cross that off at a disposible race.
First target was to get over the start line;  2nd target was 75% distance.

Mission accomplished!

However, from some practice over the weekend, I seemed to be bonding with the car & the extra gear.
Additionally, the track did start to flow after a while. I found taking it easy/not crashing is a lot quicker.

I was somewhat surprised to not be starting from the back row.  I found muself in a flock of Eagles which I'd not be able to do anything about,  but tried to keep some kind of contact as long as possible.

Albert must have had rocket fuel in his tanks!  I passed him when he was up on top of the banking (although that then distracted me & I ended up driving up the opposite bank as in my mind could see him falling onto the track).  That let Eric pass me sooner than he was going to otherwise, but Albert was somehow right behind then in front of me & Eric too.

The rest of the event was spent trying to edge closer to Eric in case he had a mishap.  I seemed able to close a fraction round some of the right-handers, but he was then away on the next straight.

My fastest lap was lap16 which made it all tantalisingly close at the end,  but realistically there would have been no way past.

Anyway, still glad it's over.
Although a few more laps would have been ok,  the same again for a 90min event would be another matter!

Cheers all; congrats up front.
Dave.

I am really disappointed.
The whole race I was very motivated, I didn't make any mistakes.
But on the last lap, on the corner described by Phil, I was slightly distracted by a lapped driver.
I went out slightly, and Ricardo passed me. I came back strong, and a terrible fight started, because I wanted to get my first place back. We hung on, it was bound to happen.
In Ricardo's place, I would have resisted too. I don't think it's anyone's fault, I think it's a battle for first place.
ricardo and phil had a great race too. All 3 of us deserved the win
I'm really sorry for this miserable end.
 I'm really disappointed
