Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 6 – Works - Bremgarten

This race announcement is for the WORKS.

The sixth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Bremgarten in Switzerland. Bremgarten is situated to the north of Bern and was built as a motor cycle track in 1931. The circuit itself had no true straight, instead being a collection of high-speed corners. From the outset, it’s tree-lined roads, often poor light conditions and changes in road surface made for what was acknowledged to be a very dangerous circuit, especially in the wet.

The Swiss Grand Prix was held at Bremgarten between 1934 and 1939 and again between 1947 and 1954. In 1950 the Swiss Grand Prix was included in the new Formula One World Championship. The race was won by Italian Nino Farina, who would go on to be the first Formula One world champion. In 1951 Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio dominated in his Alfa after taking advantage of Farina's wrong decision not to make a pit stop to change tyres during changing wet-to-dry conditions. In 1952 newcomer Stirling Moss ran as high as third in his underfunded Alta-powered HWM, but the race was won by Italian Piero Taruffi who scored his first and only F1 victory. In fact this Grand Prix was only championship race (other than the Indianapolis 500) not won that year by Alberto Ascari. In 1953 Ascari had to make a pit stop to fix the misfiring engine in his Ferrari. He left the pits in fourth place and stormed round the circuit, passing Fangio in a Maserati, and his teammates Farina and Mike Hawthorn to take victory. Ascari also won his second Drivers' Championship at that event. In 1954 Fangio (now driving a Mercedes) led from start to finish in rainy weather to take his second Drivers' Championship from countryman José Froilán González. Bremgarten has not hosted an official motorsports event since 1955, when spectator racing sports were banned in Switzerland.

As far as I know, Brazil currently observes Brasília Time (BRT) all year. So that means the qually start time in Brazil will be an hour earlier than usual, i.e. 16:45 (BRT) with the race starting at 17:50 (BRT).

Exactly, Phil!
For Brazilians, like me, qualy starts at 16:45 and race at about 17:30.
Depending on the region of the country, it starts at 15:45 and 16:30, respectively

Gutted, screen freeze on about lap 5 when I was in an intense battle with Doni for 4th place. I hope I didn't cause you to crash Doni, you were quite close  :'(

Grats to our podium men!  A good P4 for me although in the closing rounds, Fulvio was reeling me in consistently.  Had to put on a bit of a late spurt to maintain a safe gap.

Very bad luck there, Phil.  You vanished just metres ahead of me but it didn't cause me any dramas.  At first, I thought I was headed for Discoland and quickly checked my NET bars expecting to see them start to rise sharply which typically happens in that case.  After about 10 seconds, they remained stable and then I knew that it was you that GPL had frowned upon.  Again, bad luck as I was looking forward to good duel.

Congratulations to Raoni and Jonny.

If Raoni is going to maintain that pace we had better give him the trophy now!

I made a few errors, the first let Raoni past, without much struggle, when I selected the wrong gear.  My up-shift seems to be super sensitive.  The second let Team Brazil get away from me and, after Jonny had a spin,  the next allowed Jonny an easy pass as I fought the straw bales.

Ray is a keyboarder and from what my two sons tell me(they are both avid gamers), anyone using a wheel & pedals doesn't stand a snowball's chance against him.

Makes no sense to me, he should be at a disadvantage.

There is no doubt that Raoni is a young and very good driver!
But imo the Keyboard has also some big systematic advantages that can be used. I do drive sometimes with KB on my office  PC to test things...

Afaik GPL is a pc game - so it is in the code that every steering impulse makes the car slower by lateral forces.
When you use a wheel you are constantly turning the steering, so there are allways more or less braking factors slowing you down.

Using a keyboard is using the pure digital 0 or 1 (1 = signal / 0 = no signal)
so imo the 1 is much less used than the 0 phase, what makes you faster over all if you learn the trick ;)

Test it by driving Curva Grande, how few/many steering impulses you need if you try...

  Raoni is a keyboard pilot, the best in the world! I was a keyboard until 2013 I believe. Bremgarten is a track for keyboard players !!!! My riding style is totally influenced by that. Bremgarten is the only clue that I could bet on this final result, really.
    But I could also ruin my race with a stupid mistake at a point where I always get in trouble, impress, always the same point, I would like to understand that!
   It’s a little frustrating to see our grid so thin, we’re on the edge of a sever filled with both categories, but I know… we’re on the edge of leaving someone out too, so this problem is for administrators, I don’t want to be blamed !! :)

   But I believe that using a keyboard will be 2 to 3 seconds slower, because the brake is very bad and you can not choose to accelerate more in a corner exit, there is an automatic system in the acceleration of the keyboard, while you turn the the system doesn’t let you use too much power ..... this is ruining your back. A keyboardist may be better at dry shooting a tangent, they are experts at that, so mountain racing tracks are the favorite prey for a keyboardist ....... wait for Raoni in Dundrod !!!!

So happy with my performance in this one. I guess it's only the first or second time I finish a race in Bremgarten. It's rather difficult to survive such a tough track!
Dropped down to 4th after the start and tried to be extremely cautious in the first laps. I had a scary moment in the 1st lap when my game froze for about 2 seconds. Luckily, I had just entered a short straight section, which allowed me not to crash.

I was able to get past Clive and Jonny at the same place in different laps, but my first laps after getting the lead were not so easy. It was difficult to get some concentration and I almost lost everything whenI hit the bales in the last hairpin. Then I could finally set a good pace and bring the car home. I was in doubt whether I would race the Maserati or get some tokens with the Connaught. But in the end I think I made the right choice. Choosing the latter one would make me push so much harder trying to be competitive and I would probably crash.

About the keyboard thing...

I think every driving method can have its advantages and drawbacks. When it comes to keyboarding, it depends A LOT on the track you are racing.
For example, on track with such fast corners like Tripoli and Bremgarten I can be rather competitive, because there's no extreme braking or accelerations. And it also depends a lot on the mod we are racing. It's a fact that with the slower cars (55 or 65) I can have a better performance because there's less wheelspin. You can watch any race with the 67s and you'll see that I have no chance against many top drivers in most of the tracks. Doing a 1:26 in Monaco, for example, is something impossible with a keyboard. And I see many drivers who can do 25 or even 24.

One thing that I truly believe is that it's impossible to be faster with a keyboard than with a wheel in, let's say, 90% of the times, or more. Take the GPL rank, for instance. I currently have the best keyboard rank (as far as I know) with -46 in the 1967 cars. It's a quite "normal" level when you see that, with a wheel, there's a bunch of drivers who have better numbers, some even breaking the -80/-90 barrier.

It all comes to how I develop my driving style with the years. Knowing the limitations of a keyboard, I learned how to be the smoothest possible. Any unnecessary movement on the "steering wheel" on a keyboard means precious tenths of second lost. I have some replays of hotlaps on Youtube, but those are outdated. You can see me doing it better watching some current replays. You can also see how I use the throttle as a way to help me make corners and avoid working too much on the steering.

"So why don't you buy a wheel?", many people ask me. I haven't done that yet because I learned to enjoy the challenge of keyboard. In Buenos Aires, for example, last race of the season, I will have a hard time to get on the podium in normal conditions because of the characteristics of the circuit. But it's still a lot of fun to battle against yourself to improve your laptimes and finish in such conditions.

Yes! I'm only 32. Quite young, taking into account that most GPL fans are 50 or more ;D

Actually, you need almost no steering there ;D
It all comes to how well you enter the corner and control your sliding. I just use the steering to get into and some fast 'clicks' to keep the car going during the corner.

By the way, I should film my driving one day to show how weird it is. Some will think I'm a lunatic :laugh:

   this conclusion is a big mistake, he was a keyboard pilot and the immersion is the same, the difficulty too, some more automated devices actually hinder the speed, remember that you have keys, 100% or 0 !!!! therefore, the system only simulates a middle ground that is impossible to do on the key.
   I switched to steering wheel and won 3s to 4s per lap, I wouldn’t go back to the keyboard!

IMHO driving with a keyboard or a wheel are two different sims and we shouldn't mix them cause we aren't all in the same boat cause the different style of driving, lets apart the advantage or disadvantage of each one.
Said that, big respect for Raoni that is a fair and consistent driver.

The same goes with a Joystick or in external view, IMHO.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.

For me the only critical situation is the slow start of a keyboarder - if you are aware of it, it is half as dangerous!
