Title: Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy 2021 1965 F1 - Monza - Apr 11
Post by: EvilClive on April 05, 2021, 02:48:15 PM +0100
RACE 2

For this years Joe Shaw Trophy races there is something different.

We will be using the Monza track in the Normal direction and there is a free choice of car. But you will be racing against the other drivers AND yourself.

PLEASE READ BELOW AND BE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THIS WILL WORK.

Race list = iGOR
Server = UKGPL10
IP address = 217.155.118.41
Password = see above (#post_event_password)
GPL Mod = 65
Damage model = Intermediate
60fps Patch = 60fpsV2newmod
Track download = link (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=13537)
Track directory = Monza67
Qualifying starts = 21:40 UK time - 8 minutes
Race starts = ~ 21:50 UK time
Race length = 25 laps
Replay=  here (https://www.sendspace.com/file/lavh29)

PLEASE READ THESE RULES CAREFULLY AND ASK IF YOU ARE NOT SURE.

QUALIFYING IS ONE LAP ONLY. 8 minutes of qualifying, one out lap followed by a single timed qualifying lap. If you make a mistake on your qualifying lap that is tough  ;D Everyone will be watching from the pits, so no point in trying to sneak a second lap in. Anyone who posts more than a single qualifying lap will get a 30 second time penalty added to their race time.

Everyone has a free choice of car and unlimited S/Rs, with no requirement for any SnG.

Each driver will have a target time in which to complete the race, this will be calculated using their previous Monza PB x 25. In a perfect world each driver will do 25 laps equal to their previous PB ......but that won't happen  ;).
At the end of the race there will be a winner "on track" who takes the chequered flag first, but the points will be awarded to the driver who is closest to his target time. So you are racing against your best ever performance for the points.

This gives every driver, regardless of their speed, a chance to claim the glory.

QUALIFYING IS ONE LAP ONLY.
Only one lap but the first, starting from the pit, does not count as valid? If someone start before the start line the time go.

Your outlap from the pit where you get your car up to racing speed does not count.

The first full speed lap is the time that will count.

It would help with the admin if all drivers intending to take part in these races post here, then we can start calculating each person's target race time.

In previous years we have been very close to requiring 2 servers, so numbers are good to know  ;)

If you've got one in GPL Rank we could use that. Alternatively we use use the PB of a UKGPL driver with a similar pace. The default for the Works drivers who don't have a PB is to use the World Record time.

Will probably join but for the forward direction races only (if that's OK).

Clive - as you are using PB's as a benchmark then I think Monza Papyrus would be more accurate than Monza67, I found the 67 version is about 1s slower in the 67 mod.

A fair point Billy and, having thought about it, I think we can leave it as Monza67. Any small time difference will be the same for everyone and I do not anticipate anybody matching their target time as that would mean 25 laps of PB performance!!  :o. If anyone does achieve that phenomenal feat then they deserve the victory  :-\ Plus of course they will have to take a drug test and have their car stripped down to the last nut and bolt by the scrutineers  ;D

Currently we have 16 drivers intending to drive in the 2021 JSMT................3 more and we will need a second server.

But, with the target time handicap we can collate the results across 2 servers  ;D

If anybody has lost their PBs (i.e. reinstalled GPL and lost their times) the UKGPL lap times are in the old race results. See these:
Season 28 Pro (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=13126#event4465)
Season 28 Am (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=13120#event4456)
Season 26 Pro (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=12232#event3977)
Season 20 Ams (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9067#event2366)
Season 18 Ams (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7398#event1875)
Season 17 Ams (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6522#event1687)
Season 16 Ams (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5792#event1573)
Season 16 Novice (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5821#event1667)

If you have a faster PB for the car of your choice please post it here so we can use it in the handicap calculation.

Good luck in matching your old form Mike. You posted a 1:37.434 in a Cooper back in Season 17 (July 2009), that was quick  8)  Your Ferrari time might have been set around the same time?

Ferrari for me, please :)
My PB (Papy track) is 1:36,15 from 2013. I'm quite sure it has some heavy slipstream effect. But a natural race at Monza is affected by constant slipstream

In the "new" Monza, my Ferrari PB is 1:37,17. But I haven't driven it so much with the Italian machinery yet

I've used my PB time in the Lotus as a benchmark for you as we are a very similar pace. The target time has been adjusted to account for you taking the Brabham which is a fraction slower than the Lotus. If you want to take a different car from the BT11 that you normally use, just post something here to let us know and we'll adjust the target time accordingly.

If you find a PB let us know Paul. Otherwise a 1:39.5 would be a fair target time IMO. Similar to Dave Curtis and Francesco.

If you join the race server for a test, you will find we have moved the pit stalls so they are all in front of the start line so the out lap will not register as a timed lap.

Can you clarify the Qualifying, in your opening remarks you said your opponents will be watching from the pits, so are we all doing solo runs? If so that will take 3 mins a driver. If its open qualy then its up to who tows their mate round. So what's the deal?

Cheers

Mike

Clive has set the rules but I can confirm it is open qualifying so if you can get a tow from someone, good luck.

Having set your time, you have to wait out the rest of qualifying.

So if you decide to wait until the end of qualifying to do your run, you will indeed be watched by everyone who has set a time  :)

Just imagine a comedy scenario...
a number of drivers leave it late in a Monza session;  have a slow outlap/jostling to be at the rear group in the hope of picking up a really good tow for the flying lap;  but unfotunately pace is too slow & run out of time... :)

There are a few drivers who still haven't declared their PB. If you are one of them, please post your PB on this topic BEFORE the start of the race.
Otherwise for Works drivers we will use the World Record time (1:35.408) as your target time. For Ams we will use 1:37.6.

Can't find my old records but call it 1.38.00 for Papyrus Monza in the BT11. 1.39's will be a struggle at the new Monza 67.

Agreed but everyone is in the same position so the net effect should be nil.

Another enjoyable race for me. Great battle with JonnyO and Doni over the last few laps. I was very lucky to be on a tight inside line when JonnyO spun, I got past unscathed but Doni lost momentum and I managed to get a bit of a gap that I was able to hold until the line. Very lucky but I'll take it  :w00t:

Lotus please.
GPLRank reckons PB: 1:40.683 for Monza67
It must be a while since you uploaded to GPL Rank Dave. You've got a slightly quicker time from Season 28 Am. So I've used that  :detective:

Not that I'm getting all precious about it :)  but my sLowtus 1:40.683 was at the new Monza67 and uploaded to GPLRank 11-Jan-2021.  As others have also indicated, have been slightly quicker at the Papyrus version (as probably used in season 28 :) )

Anyway, was indeed fun.
Found my top gear was ok with a tow, but otherwise was struggling in clean air.

Once I'd put a wheel out slightly, the resulting half spin meant I'd lost the tow from Phiil & was falling back by over a second a lap.

Only managed to get a handful of practice laps in, so put them all in the reverse direction.  Have a feeling that Silverstone may be more of a problem!

Cheers all.
Dave.

It was fun but had a couple of issues unfortunately.

L1 on the run into Lesmo the BRM in front of me had a moment under braking so I went to the inside to avoid, ran up the kerbs , back onto the track, had just got it all sorted when got tagged and spun, so all Hell then seemed to happen as Loti, Brabs and Fezzas all bounced off me and the guard rails. Amazingly the little 65 still had 4 wheels pointing in the right direction so was able to continue.

I had 2 black screens, both just as I turned into Lesmo, the screen was blank for 5 secs or more before it returned, this didn't happen in offline running and as it occurred in exactly the same spot each time I can only assume it has something to do with my set up and its interaction to the server. Any ideas?  This hasn't happened in any other UKGPL races.

Strange, I had the similar at Brands Hatch races - screen got black for seconds. But gpl run flawless in background!
Before I had heavy screen flickers, allways at the same places under heavy braking.

I never had such things before, but I suspect it has nothing to do with online racing.

In my case (I hope) it was the G27 PSU, that had a cable that was not properly connected.
It is positioned under my pedals and it made a crackling noise in my speakers under heavy braking...

We've crunched the numbers and the results (subject to moderation but as far as I'm aware there are no reported incidents so far) after taking into account the PBs is below.  So Dave, Tris and Doni hold the advantage as we head off for Round 2 at Silverstone. Don't forget to post your PBs for Silverstone  ;)

You are still leading the pack Dave. Get some practice in for Silverstone, you have a good chance of securing the coveted Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy  :scooter:.

Thanks to Phil for his work with the results and the spreadsheet.

Some of you might now be seeing how this works. It does not really matter how FAST you are, it is all about how consistent your lap times are when compared to your best ever laptime.

Tris was fast and maintained reasonable consistency, but I suspect that somewhere he had an incident. Dave C ran his whole race very close to his PB time and without incidents, so he emerged the clear winner.

This format sets each driver a personal challenge and gives everyone, regardless of their ranking, an almost equal chance of being a winner. Just stay out of trouble and drive as fast as you can for 25 laps.....simples  ;) ;D

Note to self: Read the GCR's thoroughly before the race.

Again, a terrific start from P9 on the grid and moved up smartly on the run down to La Curva Grande.  I was a bit saucy in making a pass in the grass of Baab but I had such a speed advantage that I just couldn't resist.  Sorry; my bad.  I took up station in P3 behind Fulvio with Bot disappearing into the distance in the lead.  For a couple of laps there, it looked like Fulvio and I would be on our own but soon, we were joined by Baab and Bastian.  In a four car group now, I was disappointed to see that most of the efforts of the group seemed to be to lead this pack at one point or the other instead of cooperation to close on the leader.  This gave Bot all he needed to pull away.  Sigh...

I was happy to sit at the back of this pack for the most part just waiting out my chances.  After about eight or nine laps all the while scanning my pit board to monitor gaps and runners, I scanned my board for the laps remaining expecting to put on some pressure as the finish loomed.  I got the shock of my life.  Fifteen?  FIFTEEN???  WTH!?!?  Has somebody bungled the race lap count?  This can't be!  Surely, it's just 12 laps as per our first race.  It had better be since I'm only gassed for 12 laps.  Next lap and the count was confirmed at 14.  Oh no!  My assumption that this race was of the same lap count was my undoing.  Getting 13 laps under my belt, the engine started to wheeze as I approached the Parabolique on Lap14.  No choice but drop in for a splash n' dash and this from P2.  Groan...

I resumed in P6 but Jonny and Phil soon caught me up and we three had a good dice up to the Parabolique on the next-to-last lap where JJ got all sideways in front of me and I couldn't avoid.  Phil got through without incident but I was held up enough that I had no chance to challenge over that last lap.  Jonny recovered for P8.

Really annoyed with myself for not full reading the rules prior to.  Lesson learned.
