Title: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) 1967 F1 Sprint (Privateers) - Albi - May 2

Season 38 – 1967 F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 8 – Albi

The eighth race in the 1967 Grand Prix series finds us in South West of France. Racing first started on the Circuit des Planques in 1933, the pits and startline being on a short straight before the road twisted down into St.Antoine. At St.Juery the cars had to contend with an extreme hairpin bend, followed by a railway level crossing. The 5.531 mile circuit was shortened in 1951 to 1.859 miles, before being closed in 1955 following the Le Mans disaster. Racing resumed at the nearby Aerodrome in 1959 which is the circuit we now know as Albi. The Chicane du Sequestre was introduced in 1988. Albi has never hosted a championship F1 race, but it held a Formula Two race in 1967 and we will be using the layout used then. Jackie Stewart won that race in his Matra. He was followed home by Jochen Rindt in a Brabham and Jim Clark, who had spun his Lotus near the Dunlop bridge.

Nothing to report here , start 10th finish 10th , no spins, blown engines , disco's , screen freeze , rear endings , close shaves, crashes , punctures , overtakes . In fact nothing to laugh at at all  ::)

Good for you - wish I could say the same!

Don't usually drive the Lotus (expensive when paying with tokens) but after a few practice laps we seemed to be getting on ok.

Start of the race was fine; was happy to follow Leo around as there seemed to be a very slight gap opening up behind.
On lap3 I missed a gear exiting Double Droite; revs skyrocketed & smoky engine time.  Pulled over to reset;  but with the stream of cars, that operation took ages & cost 12 positions.

Made most places up due to spinners & disconnections.

Was hoping to be a bit more competive this time out.  It was closing up a bit at the end, another couple of laps & we would have had a 3-carriage Lotus train and would have become somewhat tasty.

Congrats to the podium & to all who managed to avoid any misfortune.

Cheers,
Dave.

It was not easy to keep Dulima and his Lotus behind me. Seems like he was just cooking somethig for the last laps. Guess I got my tires too hot trying  to keep that fast pace and made a mistake at the Aerodrome hairpin. Spoiled those last laps highlights.

Let me tell you, few cars in GPL makes me grin like a BT24 drifting out of a turn   :thumbup1:

I wrote my season off long ago, failing to complete any of the first few races I ran. So toward the end of the season I return without expectations, merely hoping to finish at a track that I've not run before. I picked the Lotus so that if I didn't do well, at least I couldn't blame the equipment (the same logic that compelled me to buy a very expensive paddle when I was learning to play pickleball). I qualified 8th, 1.5 seconds off the pole, quickly found myself running 6th without having actually overtaken anyone, and stayed there for the remainder of the race, battling no other car at any point. Yes, a pretty boring race, but at least I've now got a few points on the standings board.
