Season 38 – 1967 F1 GRAND PRIX – Hockenheim

The 7th round in the 1967 F1 series finds us at Hockenheim in Germany. The track was originally called "Dreieckskurs" (triangle course) and was built in 1932 using roads in the forest as an alternative to the Wildpark-Circuit in Karlsruhe. The track was used for motorcycle racing and was expanded to be used as test track for Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union in 1936. In 1938 the track was drastically shortened to 7.5 kilometres and it was renamed the "Kurpfalzring". This name was used until 1947 when the unchanged layout was renamed again to "Hockenheimring". This version of the circuit, which was used in 1955, consisted of the original two long straights, with the Ostkurve in the forest and the original hairpin inside Hockenheim joining them together. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

During qualifying drivers are expected to drive back to the pits after each qualifying run. It is not permissible to return to the pits using the "Esc" key. If a driver crashes his car in qualifying and cannot return to the pits safely under his own power, he must not participate in the remaining qualifying period. The driver will be allocated the grid slot achieved at that point.


Each driver may use 2 cars through the season.
Works drivers cannot use the Lotus or Eagle.
Each car must be used a for maximum of 5 races.

Congratulations Greg! Very consistent race with only minor mistakes that let me hope for a P1 finish occasionally, but on average you were a little faster.
In the beginning you could easily overtake me with the slipstream and then you did a good job defending your position when we approached the stadium section side by side. Actually I did not really intend to go for an overtaking maneuver but I was a bit surprised by your braking point and then I had to go to the inside to avoid sliding into you. You have given me a lot of space (very thoughtful driving) and after I overtook you on the inside I went wide with two wheels on the grass so that you could easily take the position back. By that occasion I was overtaken by Axel as well but a few laps later he spun and I started chasing you for the rest of the race (2-5s behind except for the last two laps).

During the last lap I had a coming together with Leo in the Sachs curve. I think there was some misunderstanding. After you went slow on the left before the Sachs curve I thought you wanted me to pass (overlap) and I thought you would give me the corner (because it would be very hard to overlap you on the outside line of the Sachs curve). So I turned to the inside as I did not expect you to be there. However, the incidence did not change our positions in the race so I think it doesn't matter. Just wanted to share my view.

Sorry about that Markus. I really slowed down after Agip to give you the racing line, took a peak at the mirror and you were going throgh, expecting you to cross in front, but it wasn't enough.

I was fast at the stadium but lost all ground in the straigts. 15km/h slower then the Eagles. Had a spin in the first lap but I guess it didn't change the final position after all.

In reality I didn't expect the Masserati to last all that high revving. Good first Grand Prix!

I don't know what happened to Raoni? I saw skid marks entering the stadium section. I don't know if he wrecked or was disconnected. It didn't look like anybody was going to be able to challenge his speed. Thanks for giving me a chance to get a win.


Thanks Markus. It was a close race. I was never able to relax. It was a difficult race. My setup needed some improvement. I wanted to shift gears at a lower rpm because my engine was running hot. I worried it would fail at any time. I had a hard time braking for Ostkurve and the stadium section. The car wanted to fishtail while braking heavily. And it's been a long time since I've struggled so much at Hockenheim to run a good line through the stadium section.


I try my best not to spoil anybody's fun with an accident. I don't want to take any risks or be aggressive until late in the race.

2 of 3 times I managed to open a 4 second gap, I made a mistake that ruined most of my lead that had taken so long to achieve. I got lucky that you fell behind late in the race. You would have beat me had you been able to stay within 5 seconds. I didn't realize it until the last lap that I was going run out of fuel if I didn't slow down.

I broke my arm two years ago. I noticed a few weeks ago that I'm better able to get the car back under control after making mistakes. My speed and consistency are getting closer to what they once were. It's good to be able to drive more like I had.

It's a shame Fulvio missed the race. Maybe you should set an alarm clock.
