Season 38 - SC67 - Lola vs Ferrari Cup – Round 8 -Hockenheim

WIP

Round 8 of the S38 Lola vs Ferrari Cup will be at my hometrack Hockenheim.
I watched in 1964/65 the grandstands of the Motodrom being built with big construction machines.
In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

Please check the Season 38 details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1262&theme=6) regarding rules and the Lola vs Ferrari Cup pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1312&theme=6) in particular.
In order to add an element of realism, and to hopefully reduce the possibility of rear-end incidents, the brake light patch will be used (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=13319&#entry145626)

Handicapping

"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of 10 gallons of race fuel (to remain in the tank after the race). No limit in quali!
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

In order to ensure there will be ~10 gallons of fuel left after the race, the minimum race fuel load for Works is expected to be:

  • Lola T70 = 29 gallons (~110 litres)
  • Ferrari P4 = 30 gallons (~114 litres)

2 x resets will be allowed there is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.
Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Disastrous race.Sorry for the incident Girard but the car went into oscillation. After the incident 2 shift R than the usual problem with the wheel.
Seem that lose the connection with the game and go blocked to the right.

A race to forget for me tonight, I qualified 6th thanks to a slipstream in the last few minutes but the gods of racing decided that was my only stroke of luck, as it turns out...
I lost a couple of position at the start but at the ostkurve I was 6th again as Philippe and Francesco crashed, then at lap 3 I spun and I rejoined 9th. I closed the gap to Christian's Lola soon with 3 cars ahead in a few seconds, it was a close battle at 330 kmh for the 6th position. The only spark of the evening was when I overtook Christian at the Ostkurve. I was chasing Pete and other two Lolas but the close battle gave Markus the chance to reach the pack. After the Nordkurve Markus tried to overtake me but, i don't know how ( i left a lot of space on the right), he pulled me against the fence, fortunately I managed to recover the car. Maybe this was the break point for me, i was calm and concentrated but the lost position turned me too aggressive. I was behind Pete at Sachscurve, he was a tiny too wide and with a stupid move i tried to pass him on the inside. I'm so sorry Pete, i hope your race was not ruined too much...  however i flipped in the air and when i rejoined the track i found my car was damaged and the engine could barely pull the 4th gear. So I reset but at that time i was last and with a super heavy car i couldn't do too much to recover.

Congratulation to Tristan and Greg ( and evil of course  8)), an impressive race, you are sooooo fast. Maybe we need a further class for you, the Ultraworks pilots ;)

::) ;D

Great great race all over with Doni (now I see that you had a light car), Markus and Axel in the end. At last but one lap entering the Motodrome I had to go wide to not hit Axel on braking and gave a position to Doni and wasn't able to pass again cause in a three way battle it's almost impossible to pass on draft. Thx all, and to freeze gremlins that stayed out this track for once.

first race since a long time (a century :D) with Gpl and here!  I did not hope for better than to finish  ) I am not very fast anyway!  A few mistakes will have deprived me of staying in contact with the peloton, and I punished myself by putting a high percentage for the clutch in the shift.ini settings.
Now I can't wait to race on Sunday ... :)

That was a very tough race with a lot of fun and frustrating at the same time.

First of all. I am very sorry Giovanni about the touch that sent you into the fence. I also thought I left enough space. I watched the replay  and both of us had space left at the side of the road. Both of us could have easily avoid it. I will use more of the space next time. Before we touch both of us slightly move to the middle of the track and then we collide. Unfortunate and unnecessary.
After the Nordkurve Markus tried to overtake me but, i don't know how ( i left a lot of space on the right), he pulled me against the fence, fortunately I managed to recover the car. Maybe this was the break point for me

In the very first lap approaching Ostkurve I did a horrible beginners mistake. As I mainly drive the 67 cars I am used to downshift much earlier to use the engine to brake the car. But with the Sports Cars I have to downshift later to prevent the car from over-revving and becoming unstable under braking. As the start was rather hectic, with Tristan, Mark, Greg and myself approaching the Ostkurve in a close pack, I just forgot about that and that sent me into a spin.

Afterwards I was in P11 and needed a few laps until I had caught up with a pack of 5 cars (P6-P10). The pack racing was very intense and made it very difficult to overtake as I didn't get a speed advantage over the ones in front of me who also profited from a slipstream. However, as everyone was in a close battle I could take advantage when someone else was getting a bad exit. One or two times I had to outbrake another driver entering the stadium section. I managed to get through the pack but I wasn't able to pull away as I had no draft.
For several laps there was a great battle with Fulvio who attacked me again and again. It seemed I was batter in late braking so I was able to defend the position. After Axel made a mistake I was able to overtake him and Mark must have made a mistake as well as I was closing in on him in the final laps. The slipstream provided by Mark helped me to defend myself and get even closer to him. But with two laps to go I spun exiting the Nordkurve and lost all the positions I worked for so hard.

This was a lot of fun. Thanks to Doni and Fulvio for some great laps during the first half of the race. Super close all the way but I didn't have the legs in top gear to make use of your slipstream. I've tweaked my gearing for next time :)

Giovanni - no worries. I'm still learning to handle these big cars. The moment I went wide I knew that I'd got it wrong. Just a racing incident.

With four laps to go I missed a gear at full revs coming out of Ostkurve which blew my engine. That gave Phillipe the opportunity to whizz past me and collect more points. I was just happy to finish on the lead lap having had to Shift-R. Cold tyres and a full tank made it tough.

Overall, this has been the most fun in the SC series for me. I'm still learning how to drive them but tonight I was really pleased with my consistency. Great sharing a track with you all. You are teaching me a lot.

Congrats Tristan! You did an excellent job.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't pass Tristan. I got my nose in front once going into the Ostkurve. He had the inside line so couldn't turn in as I needed. He made few mistakes. He ran wide once before the final turn and I could have gone inside but it was too early in the race to take a chance to pass. He was slow once in T1 and I got lucky I didn't hit him. I lost all my momentum then, which ruined another small opportunity to pass. Late in the race I hoped he make that same mistake before the final turn but he never did. :)

My gearing could have used some improvement. I was limited to 203 mph (327 kph). The engine wouldn't turn any faster at that speed. I needed more speed to pass. I thought the heavy fuel load would keep our speeds lower. And my acceleration in 2nd gear was weak.

It was nice that nobody seemed to disconnect. My screen flashed one time and I thought I was going to be disconnected. It was good to be able to put some pressure on Tristan. It's been a long time since I've been able to do that. I thought I had a chance to use the slipstream at Road America to stay close to Tristan and Mark but I wasn't sure. I was more confident I could do it this time.

Thanks for the fun guys. Take care.

It certainly seemed like the Ferraris were the ride to have.  Lola runners had to settle for the minor positions.  Not that it was a dull show.  Not by any means.  Fulvio, Pete and I were in hot combat from the get-go.  It seemed as if Fulvio could make an easier pass on me than the reverse.  Gearing, perhaps.  Pete was ever a threat and passed me a couple of times.  I don't think that we were more than one second ahead or behind at anytime to late on when Pete lost an engine.  Bad luck.  With two laps to go, it looked like Fulvio was solid for taking Lola honours but a slip entering the stadium had him off the road and I managed a pass.  More to the point, I had Axel directly ahead for that last lap and the slipstream tow I got off his Ferrari denied Fulvio the chance to get back ahead of me.  More than a little lucky for that.

Great racing, gys.  :)
