Title: UKGPL Season 38 (Spring 2021) Mixed Open Wheel - Vallelunga - May 11
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on May 08, 2021, 03:59:22 PM +0100
Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 8 –  Vallelunga

For this round, the MOW entrants will drive the 1967 Formula 2 cars at Vallelunga. The Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi is a racing circuit situated 32 km (20 miles) north of Rome, Italy, near Vallelunga of Campagnano.[1] Vallelunga was built as a sand 1.8 km (1.102 miles) oval in 1959.[2] From 1963 the circuit held the Rome Grand Prix, and in 1967 a new loop was added when the track became the property of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI). Further refurbishment was undertaken in 1971. The track is named for the famous Italian racing driver Piero Taruffi.
PLEASE CHECK YOU HAVE THE 1971 VERSION OF THE TRACK. THE LINK IN THE RACE POST WAS CHANGED ON SATURDAY NIGHT.THE '71 VERSION RUNS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO THE EARLIER 67 LAYOUT.

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group and keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1302&theme=6)

I've just downloaded it, in case you need to practice? :)

EDIT: and after a couple of laps, even I can tell vallelun is quite different.  Those kerbs seem higher for starters!
(as well as the track going the other way round of course - just for the benefit of anyone else who is not aware).

Thanks for mentioning it, although does not look as though this version of the track exists in the local DB yet.

Cheers.
Dave.

On test server there is the '71 version, The curbs  are like there were on '71, and no run off area like were built in '90s.

This is fun. Vallelunga without the tricky jump. All it needs now is a bit of a graphics update.

Anyone wants to do some graphics update is welcome and I can give him all my source files. I had worked a lot for accurate altitudes and banking from real data and didn't spent too much for eyes candy. I hope you like the track.  :)

Hi Christian,  if you have not done this already, you will need to vote to enter this series at:
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=23412 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=23412)

Also, you will need to choose a car group [1-9] from https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1302&theme=6 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1302&theme=6)

As mentioned to the last entrant,  you may need to wait on race night to see if a slot is available, as it's become a popular series.

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave
Ok. It is done.
How do you know if a car is available?
I think I'll take a Brabham

Christian,

You drove in the Privateer Class in the 55 race yesterday. You can select from any Manufacturer class, but you will have to stay with Brabham for the rest of the season. (Excellent choice in my opinion).

I don't think we have had a full grid this season. If there is a slot free after 9pm you are welcome to join.

Managed a little bit of practice here this evening.

Lovely track with a nice feel. Flows great. ;)

I predict some good racing here.. and hopefully fun and no disco's.  :o

Typical of me, I had been practicing at the wrong version.

Christian, just try to join after 21:00 UK.  If the server isn't full, you are in!

UKGPL_10 should be online most of the day if you want to check the connection etc.

My F2 mirrors look very low-res and blurry in comparison to other mods. Any ideas how I can improve them? I have a feeling that mirrors will be important later  ;)

What kind of freeze had you, server based or driving as client? I never had problems like that neither on servers where I installed to host italian league races in the past, neither as clients. There isn't a server version cause the graphics are light as posted by Achim on track SRMZ thread.
Have you installed the Kenny's update pheraps?
Thx

Practice was fine for me over the last couple of days (and not had a single freeze since the track was running earlier in the week).
But my client GPL locked up at the end of the qual session (approx 21:18) and during the race (21:39), needing task-manager to close.

I had applied the Kenny gfx addon to my client machine yesterday,  after which testing still seemed fine.

Server seems to indicate 13 drivers still in now.

Cheers.
Dave.

I need to investigate what's going on. An hour before practice I took my Fanatec throttle hall-sender off to clean it as I had an erratic throttle pedal. This made no difference. I then switched back to logitech G27 pedals (YUCK!) but still the same problem (At least that means that my Fanatec pedals are OK)

The problem seemed to go away in qualifying but on Lap 1 I had major problems (watch the replay from my cockpit and you'll see what I mean.) throttle all over the place. Sorry AG. I took you out at the 2nd hairpin because of this.

I think that I've now worked it out. Problem in 4th and 2nd gear only so I'm guessing that it's the shifter and not the throttle. I'll have to take Logi shifter apart and clean it tomorrow. I dont' want a repeat of this. Otherwise a great track and a lot of fun. Grats to podium.

Is the issue that when changing into 4th (or 2nd) that the 'other' incorrect gear can be selected (maybe if the change is not ultra-precise, or if lightly touching the stick longer than required to change gear?).
With your setup of differernt component parts, is the shifter connected to its own USB port?

I have a small collection of gettng progressivly-worse G25 & G27 shifters,  connecting through a Leo Bodnar adapter.
If you have similar, there is a config utility avaialble which allows you to adjust the horizontal & vertical threasholds for each gear.
Doesn't magically clean/fix a bad shifter, but can possibly extend the working life before resorting to a stripdown.

My replay doesn't show any contact, but the server still determined we were to close. The racing was close and fun with several people, but very hard to pass. Overall, I like this track very much. Thanks for the track, the race and UKGPL for hosting this event.

See you next race,

Thanks for the advice Dave. I have G27 shifter going into Leo Bodnar adaptor and all running on Linux. I've found the link here... (looks as though they've updated the adaptor as well).

Let's hope I can get it to work on Linux ;)

There is firmware update so the device will also support the later G29/G920 shifter,  as well as the configuration utility.
However, looks to be for Windows.

For example for my current shifter, waggling around in each gear (it DID look a lot cleaner previously):

From my replay it seems that David and Paul freezed at the same time at 6'33" of race. ???
All the others that didn't finish had engine failure or crashed.
I don't understand if Axel retired for engine failure or for other reasons after the contact with Alain at Cimini. Alain too leaved after have waited for Axel rejoin.
If you did so in a real race you would be fired by your boss  ;)

Didn't expect to be up front with the F2 cars. Guess I enjoyed the flow of the track.

Was nice racing with against Alain at the early laps and with Tom (so fast  :o) at the end.

Few laps from the end I realized was gonna run out of fuel and slowed a bit but wasn't enough. Did a quick splash and go securing the last spot on the podium  :thumbup1:

I did not expect such a good place for my 3rd race here, although, I once again benefited from a few output track / disconnection.
The race was intense and a fight first with Doni then with Fulvio. Doni will take 4th place after a collision with Fulvio and the fight to keep 5th place will last until the end. I did not see the 36 laps pass ... ;)
I still have to try the F1 67 and 65 and I will be ready for next season ... ;D

In in-game chat, what do the writing letters / numbers correspond to?

I was one of those who cooked his engine on lap 3?, probably caused by a couple of dodgy upshifts/downshifts in the early laps.

Getting 2nd when you want 4th, or 1st when you wanted 3rd, uncovers a rev range that the engine designers had not anticipated and appears to stress too many components  :-\
Which leads onto the exchange between Pete and Dave, re the Bodnar cable and the configuring software. Thanks for the info guys, I have ordered a cable and hope that I can "correct" the H pattern a little so that I avoid too many random gearchanges ( and explosions in the crankcase).

I suppose that anytime you grid up in P13 and come away just one place shy of a podium can't be consider as anything but a sterling day.  Indeed, it was.  :)

Some fine battles with Christian and Fulvio along the way certainly spiced up the run and each in his turn hounded me mercilessly for many a lap.  If it weren't for a late-race collision between these very two, I would not have had that tasty P4 finish.

Of course, many others fell to misfortune in the earlier laps as spins, crashes ,engine blowups and sadly, some discos eliminated quite a few ahead of me.  In fact, I made no legitimate pass at all; just rose through the ranks from good luck alone.

My only stumble along the way was a very odd slip on Lap 22 when it felt for all the world like my steering had failed when I proceeded to brake and set up for Semaforo.  The car just didn't seem to respond and it took a moment to get the handle on it.  That's all was needed for both Fulvio and Christian to put me back two places.  I'll just put it down to a little slide under braking and it didn't recur.

Great job by my ADC amigo and sparring partner for the last 15 years, Tom Johnson, to score a fine P2 and take the FTD honours.  Well done, TJ!

I've rebuilt my G27 shifter and no improvement. I think it's time for the graveyard. Still, it's lasted 10 years. Just ordered a Logitech G Driving Force replacement. It's all the budget can stretch to. In the meantime, I'm having to use paddles. YUCK!

Bodnar cables arrived today, very impressed as they threatened 5-7 days for Royal Mail delivery. Just girding my loins to go and re wire the rig  ;).I will report back on my findings.

I am aware that my ( second) Logitech shifter has had a hard, short life and this cable change might be a temporary bodge and will not sort all of my concerns, I wonder if anyone has any opinions on the Thrustmaster TH8A shifter? I am assuming that it would work via USB with my current G25 which is due for upgrade replacement this year, probably for a Thrustmaster wheel or similar?

OK.
New cable for shifter and new cable for pedals from BODNAR. I should say here that this is all on Win10.

Cables installed ...no probs just need to tidy up excess lengths with some cable ties.
Software/Calibration ....done just followed the online instructions.

Jump into GPL and had to re-configure the CONTROLS calibration for the new axis assignments under OPTIONS.

Then I hit a small problem.
I had the pedals working OK but no gear shift.?.?.? Tried a RESTART of PC but no good.
Dug into the GPLSHIFT patch and found my way to the  .ini file. It took a while to understand exactly what the various SHIFT options were and how to change them.

I had to edit the default shift detection from "Auto" to "#2USB", basically to detect a non standard shifter input and everything worked OK.

Tried a few laps and my initial impressions are that pedal responses are slightly smoother, probably as a result of the higher pulse no's?? and the shifter "feels" the same ( loose and floppy as before which was to be expected ) but the gears did find themselves a little easier. I still think that I will need to upgrade the Shifter and the wheel some time this year.

EDIT>
I have just tried a few more laps and discovered that I have lost the Pribluda display? All appears to be in order within the GPL.ini file and with Prib.ini, but nothing showing on screen. Any suggestions guys?

....if anyone has any opinions on the Thrustmaster TH8A shifter?
Yes I have one. Excellent shifter, much better than my old G25.

I bought the shifter on its own first and gradually moved over to Thrustmaster as the G25 pedals, and finally the G25 wheel, eventually wore out.

A complete set of wheel, pedals and shifter is a lot of money to spend on one go.

After my success with the Bodnar cable installation, word must have got back to Mr Bill Gates and he kindly sent an automatic update for Win10 that announced it's presence as I shut down last night.

This morning after Microsoft has worked it's nocturnal magic I can no longer access GPL !!???!!  :-\ :'(  :taz: :hang:.

I can access GEM and select the mod and driver, but when I hit the green button to launch GPL there is a momentary black screen before it returns to GEM.
I tried a direct launch of GPL from the GPL.exe in the SIERRA folder and the result is the same, I get dumped back into Windows Explorer ( or whatever it is called these days!).
I have walked away from the rig in disgust and will go back and give it a try when my blood pressure has dropped, but it looks like yet another fresh install of GPL  :-\.  Fortunately I have a working copy ( well it did work when I saved it!!) on my external hard disk from the last time that this happened, so I should be able to take a copy of my latest track/setups/seasons folders and drop them into a new install.
It does seem that many of my GPL woes are closely associated with a Win10 update.

Just a guess, but possibly a corrupt track.ini?  In the tracks folder, order by modified date & maybe check the most recent one.
(I've seen that on a server when trying to host;  GEM+ loads, but iGOR does not appear to start at all).

Otherwise, maybe try renaming your GEM.INI  & get it re-built  (you may have a couple of them laying around in different locations, so probably the last modified one is a good bet).

I really do not understand this W10 masochism...

(c:/users/Public/Documents/GEM+/gem.ini)

Never run the original gpl.exe
- it seems to be blocked by W10 or your AV - so GEM+ can't build the mod.exe -> gplc67.exe

OK. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

All fixed and running again..... at last.

Rather than spend fruitless hours trying to find out what the Win10 update might have done/changed, I opted to drag across my working copy from my external back-up drive and copy in the current TRACKS/SETUPS/SEASONS folders to update.
Renamed the current suspect SIERRA install as oldSIERRA and allowed the backup copy to take the SIERRA name. This also allowed the current GEM install to work with the replacement SIERRA install.
That all worked fine and GEM fired up the 67 cars at Albi. (So it would appear that "something" changed with GPL and not with GEM during the Windows update?)

I then hit a snag of my own ineptitude because although I had steering and pedals, I had no gears  ??? Which was very odd as all had worked fine yesterday. Recalibrated the Bodnar gears and tried multiple times to persuade GPL to allow me some gearshifts.

Eventually traced the problem to GPLShift. I had it installed and working in the current suspect oldSIERRA, but although the BACKUP copy had GPLShift files within it, they had never actually been activated by the GPLShift_patch.exe, because I only switched to H pattern after I had saved that working copy.

Once I did that everything worked 100%, even Pribluda.

But I am still not any faster  :-\

@ Axel. When everything went t*ts up with GPL and I could not get it to work through GEM, it was a last desperate act to try and launch GPL from the Sierra folder, just to see if I could bi-pass GEM and check if GPL still worked. I am aware that once GEM is operational it should be allowed to function uninterrupted, but it wasn't so I figured that I had nothing to lose.  ;)

If I had enough RAM between my ears and coupled to a modern thought processor, I would switch to Linux in an instant and tell Mr Gates to go insert a window where the sun don't shine!! But, I suspect that I could find myself in a very deep software swamp if I went down that route  :-\

Go on... Make the switch to Linux. You won't regret it. The beauty is that you have both OS running side by side on the same machine.

Linux does things well (although today I am not convinced that it really has anything more than w10! Other than free!), But is not a very good friend for race simulation. ;)

I do all racing with linux! + server!
Mint and opensuse are atm my favourites - no experimental updates...

Maybe you only practice GPL ?!  It's complicated for everything else ...

AC runs fine, all office runs perfect, TV + multimedia + streaming, hosting races, capturing races, ++++

When did you last try it?

The OS is not a "mobile phone app" capturing all your data and sending every keystroke to big brother ???

It's so easy to set up, my 69 year old sister did switch 3years ago from W7 to linux without any flaws

@cookies, Yes, it's true that I haven't tried for several years ... the main reason is the lack of a simple solution for the different games (does Rfactor 2 work easily today?!) And also that my  woman (the few times she uses my pc) is totally resistant to this kind of change ... ;)

It's up to you to decide: Pay with your data or learn some new things

if my 69 yo sister can switch...
