Pit stops: Required

Server: simracing.org WEDNESDAY
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Beware the raised kerbs. Ride to high and you will get a cut. The flat kerbs are more reasonable.

Tony, is it the Ford Falcon Sprint 351 or the one called just Ford Falcon? If it's the former, then it's much faster than all the other cars, by about 5 seconds.

I just tested the Mustang, Cortina, Alfa and Sprint 351. Mustang was the slowest, by about 1-2 seconds behind Cortina and Alfa, which are on par.

I uploaded my setups to the database, if anyone needs a starter for those cars.

A warning btw - don't touch the poles behind the curbs at speed! Also you can get a track cut warning by going wide just a bit at some corners. It's very tight.

Thanks! The "Sprint" in its name got me confused, as the default in the game is called just Ford Falcon.

I also fell foul of the cut track gremlins, although I think on two occasions it was for running too wide with my Ford super tanker  :-\.

But to compound a bad day at the office I collected my SnG on the lap I was going to pit for fuel. Then I forgot to hit Enter" when the clipboard showed, so I sat there waiting for my SnG to serve for a full 30 secs before I realised.....then I had to squeeze another lap on fumes before I got back to the pits and over shot my pitman by 2mtrs......Only then did I discover that I had not calibrated reverse gear on my shifter ??????:taz: :taz: :taz:

A beer and a piece of Toblerone suddenly seemed much more appealing.......................

Normally hate this version of Silverstone, but the Alfa can make just about any circuit a joy to drive, and so it was the case here.  Absolutely love the way you can attack the corners with this car.

No chance of competing with Daz, but Hristo's switch to the supposedly slowest car; the Mustang made for some speculations - would he have to change tyres, or maybe slow down if he didn't?

He & Daz quickly disappeared after the start, while the rest of the field fell behind, so first stint was rather lonely.  Had planned to pit after 7 laps - that way I could just fill the tank and not worry about how much fuel to add.  However, if I was to have any hope of competing with Hristo later in the race, I had to optimize as much as possible. If I pitted early, I might wind up behind or in the middle of the field, potentially losing time.  Thus went long instead, pitting after 13 laps, hoping for a clear track when exiting.

As it happened, I met up with Hristo in the pits.  Given that he was around 20 secs ahead at the time, I was certain he had changed his tyres, when I left the pits ahead of him.  After the out lap, the gap was 5 secs, with waay to many laps left for any hopes of retaining 2nd.  One lap later, the gap had dropped by 1 sec, but then the drop rate dropped - next lap it was a few 10ths, giving me renewed hope.  Flogged the Alfa as hard as I possibly could. After the penultimate lap, the gap suddenly jumped to 12 secs, so obviously Hristo had run into trouble.  Replay reveals one of the killer marker poles to be his bane.  With this I could ease off a little for the final lap, to take an unexpected 2nd place.

Grats to Daz & Hristo, commiserations to the early retirements.

Thanks to Hristo for again providing setups.  I tried the one for the Alfa, but was a little faster with my own 'Inspired by Hristo' setup, so stayed with that  :)

I was also enjoying the Alfa on this track, Erling! The 5 speed gearbox and the neutral balance makes it so nice to just push to the limit without much worry.

After going 2 seconds quicker in practice than Daz in his Cortina, I thought it's pointless to stay with the Alfa, so I decided to switch to the Mustang, with which I had similar lap times as his. Unfortunately for me, he improved massively in qualifying and I realized there's probably no chance to fight with him in the race, especially considering the massive tyre wear I was having to deal with.

He even did a sub 35 during the race, which was what I had with the Alfa, so in hindsight I shouldn't have switched. Anyway, I thought perhaps if I make a good start and take the lead, it would be possible to keep him behind, but unfortunately the first sector doesn't suit the Mustang at all, so I was already down a second at the end of sector 1, and then the gap just kept growing steadily. I could catch up here and there because of the power advantage, but once we hit the twisty bits, I was losing almost 2 seconds in total.

I had also started on full tanks, planning to have a quicker pitstop just for fuel, but not stopping in the correct spot and having to reverse twice completely ruined that plan. As Erling described, I was out at about 5 seconds behind him and could initially begin to close up the gap, but the tyres were already almost gone and the grip just kept disappearing more and more.

By the time we entered the penultimate lap, it was almost impossible to drive and after getting two cut warnings in my desperate attempts to keep up the pressure, I went too close to one of those concrete poles, clipped it and it spun me around. Even just bringing the car home was a challenge, as I lost it again in the last sector on the final lap.

It was a lonely drive and a tough challenge, but chasing Erling after the pitstop made it a bit more enjoyable. Overall a race to forget for me though.

Congrats Daz for the victory, you were just untouchable in this race! Congrats Erling for making the best out of the situation despite the pressure!  ;D

Knowing how much of an advantage the V8s normally have at a Silverstone event I thought the 4 cylinder cars would be a little more off the pace. The newer sections obviously play into the strengths of the smaller cars more than I thought.

Couldn't quite find the lap in practise, was always wide at one or other of the corners, Stowe being a prime candidate......but a couple of small tweaks to the setup in qualifying did make a little bit of a difference on the brakes and I took a fair chunk off as Hristo rightly points out. He had swapped to the Mustang, but I did wonder whether he would revert to the Alfa given I was going a bit better. I did still think the Mustang may be quicker over one lap, perhaps the Falcon may have done the job though.

I was pretty sure I wouldn't match Hristo over the first lap, and was more than happy with the idea of following him to watch his tyres wear out which I was sure they would. But, the launch was good, and he didn't quite get to me before the Abbey curve, and I was able to be in front into the complex. The next tight spot would be at the end of the Wellington straight into Luffield, but I had been able to make enough space in the complex that Hristo could not quite get to me. From there I just had the hammer down constantly to pull a gap, more about the car than me really.

Made a couple of small errors resulting in cuts, so was on my best behaviour from around lap 10 or so. Pitstop was OK for a change, and came out comfortably in the lead, bringing it home nice and steady. Not sure when I dipped into the 34s, but that came as a bit of a surprise.

Good event, was surprised how much I enjoyed the new layout, not always been the case when I have tried it in the past.

I thought it's not allowed to change my car once qualifying begins, Daz, which is why I had to stay in the Mustang and see my chances disappear  ::) ;D
