Title: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Cookie on August 03, 2021, 10:51:09 PM +0100 Season Break 38/39 - Fun + Test – CanAm 66 - Clermont
We race these open 66 CanAm brutes in France at the Clermont Ferrand circuit in Charade, Auvergne where four Formula One French Grands Prix were held : 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as that of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971. This track had several problems that hopefully got solved by the new Track Gap Freeze Fix Patch v.09 (http://srmz.net/index.php?s=1d55bf5d3d0f891eb7da6c3f35d87a26&showtopic=14247) Put the .xml in the ../GPLSecrets/GEM+/Options/ folder and activate it in GEM for all mods!
Handicapping: There will be no handicapping. Drivers have a free choice of chassis. Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make a Stop and Go. This is a fun race so incidents will not be moderated but please drive carefully and with consideration for others. Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line. Are you better to rev to red line or use tall gears and low-down torque? Either way, they're lots of fun on this track.
Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: maddog on August 06, 2021, 01:23:09 PM +0100 The bigger the motor, the larger the torque, so the less peaky the power curve is. I'd use only 2 gears on the big Chevy's at Clermont. The question is, where to tickle it, and where to boot it. Engine size is shown on the Player Info page.
Tight 1st corner woild suggest we all first practice staying left or right on lap 1. Scrap Merchants are already circling. :D Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: PaulV on August 08, 2021, 01:25:49 PM +0100 Can't get home for this one tonight.
So hope you all have a blast. This is another brilliant track.. Thanks to the marvellous new track patch, GPL has been reborn. Any chance you wizards could patch me up. LOL. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Pete Bennett on August 08, 2021, 10:29:29 PM +0100 What a lot of fun. I was surprised that I out-qualified Cookie (just) but he whooshed past me at the start. I made a silly mistake on L2 and Jonny could pick up a place. After that it was all very lonely for 12 laps. I did manage to park my car in the truck at the end of the race though. :)
Thanks for organising. See you in Season 39. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Phil Thornton on August 08, 2021, 10:34:32 PM +0100 Well that was pretty hectic. I made loads of mistakes and probably took about 4 or 5 shift-Rs but it was a fun race and the purpose was to test the track. In my experience a lot of my screen freezes occurring during crashes, but not today. The track was rock solid. I'm feeling very confident about this patch. We can roll out a few tracks that we've had to black list in the past. S39 will be interesting ;).
Thanks to Martin and Doni for some fun racing. It was very hard to pass here. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: GregT on August 08, 2021, 10:53:43 PM +0100 Congrats Tristan, Jonny, and Axel! That was a weird finish.
I was lucky to hold 2nd for so long. I got out of one near disaster and I was often close to spinning. It was interesting to see how mine and Tristan's laps differed. Two places he could accelerate better than me but whenever I could get on the throttle good I'd gain on him. There were two turns he appeared much faster than me where two other turns I was much faster. It was strange that the two turns I was faster were both left handers. My apologies Axel for blocking the track. I couldn't get going soon enough after I crashed. I got the lead twice and both times my right foot got too heavy. I hit Tristan once after he got into a bad slide. I gave up back the lead because didn't want it if I couldn't get it cleanly. If I'd have known he was going to run out of fuel, I could have driven slower. :) This was a strange combination of cars and track. The M1B takes an incredible amount of finesse to run a fast or smooth lap. There's much less room for error with some these cars than any others I've driven here. It was nice to drive it again. It's been a long time. I thought I'd like the 5 speed and I did. Nice lap Phil! You must have nipped me on the last lap? I was tempted to drive the 2E but I knew no other car would stand a chance against it. I had a glitch twice and both times in the same place. Coming out of Turn 1 my screen flickered, several frames were black. Once was very bad and I thought GPL was going to crash. Thanks for the fun guys. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Cookie on August 08, 2021, 11:02:53 PM +0100 Yep that was a little shocking when I was in close battle with JJ and I suddenly had your rear end in my way...
But all in all a real fun race, not my kind of track, so I tried to go save. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: JonnyO on August 08, 2021, 11:13:05 PM +0100 I was a little out of tune I think I could have sworn Greg won the race  I'm sorry about that Tristan let's fix this!
Congratulations to Tristan!!!! :thumbup1: I got in late and as usual I didn't see any Genies among the cars, so...... After 4 laps in the race I found a good pace and as some mistakes passed I gained positions.......but I never passed anyone in a classic way. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Phil Thornton on August 08, 2021, 11:32:08 PM +0100 Nice lap Phil! You must have nipped me on the last lap? I was tempted to drive the 2E but I knew no other car would stand a chance against it. Thanks Greg. Until today I think I've only driven the Lola T70 with the big Chevy 359. I tried it here but it just felt too big and 98% of the track was 1st and 2nd gear. So I looked through the cars and picked the lightest one. It turned out to be a great choice. The Chap 2E was perfect. I think I did my fastest lap mid race when I had a clear track, the rest of the time I was either in the trees up up Doni's exhaust pipe :oTitle: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: maddog on August 09, 2021, 11:37:44 AM +0100 One of the most challenging tracks attempted by Can-Amer's. My admiraion goes to those who finished without crashing. The real
car's were made wide for roadholding, with 71's even wider. They look a bit strange from up close, and personal, but were given enough 'grunt,' to take the extra weight. Not ideal on a narrow, winding track though. I managed to shave some width from trackside objects, during the race , which added time for trackside repairwork in several spots. ::) Time also found to puzzle over, how not to run over a slower car, when it refuses to stand still! I expect everyone has explored the track, during calmer moments, and found the tunnel? I may use it as an overtaking manoeuvre, next time I Can-Am here, and hope no-one notices . . . ;) Fun, but challenging. Freeze fix means we all win! Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Pete Bennett on August 09, 2021, 12:00:33 PM +0100 The next day... I have just done a few laps in the Chaparral. if only I'd used that car yesterday. It's so much quicker than my heavy Lola. The CanAms are a new experience to me. I didn't think that I was going to enjoy them but this has been great.
Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Cookie on August 09, 2021, 12:09:25 PM +0100 I wonder if you haven't stood beside such a car in reality?
I do remember when I first saw these cars in the mid 60s, I just was surprised how small they are! A modern supercar may come close, but I prefer not to drive them.
Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: maddog on August 09, 2021, 05:18:52 PM +0100 i've now looked at the stats, and realize these cars did not grow wider faster than other rapid machinery. I saw the 71's in the paddock, at the Goodwood Historic race meeting, and remember how they looked different from other machinery. I must stop by my local Lola dealership, and remind myself what made them so, along with their rental fee. 8)
Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Cookie on August 09, 2021, 06:17:00 PM +0100 Yes the CanAm 71 were much bigger than the 66s
I had an interesting talk in the pits with this cars driver at Hockenheim - he told me that he only uses 2 gears here... With a buggered shoulder, all those twisties are certainly a challenge. The eyeballs weren't all they could have been either. The fun was in giving Phil and Martin a hardass-time in not giving way to obviously superior speed. I gave them a couple of wave-bys early on but after they fell of the road a few times to end up behind me, I thought, 'What the Hell. Let 'em work for it. Could be fun!' Try as they might, they couldn't get by. Only for the last laps did I realize that I was coming up short on fuel so cruised it in for the last couple of laps.
That Phil set the FTD some two seconds per mile faster than I is amazing! :) Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: maddog on August 09, 2021, 10:58:21 PM +0100 Not many here have seen Interserie cars in action - Can-Am in Europe! :chef: A Ukgpl rule is needed, for drivers who recieve special help from the actual drivers, to make them start at the rear. ;)
Those who want to see an Interserie carset should look here : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=12613 A very good artist called Jonny'o has made them. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Leo Menegucci on August 10, 2021, 02:28:35 PM +0100 No thecnical problem. Was I warping?
Just a driver error when downshifting that resulted me rolling down the cliff. Even then, no CTD. The 66's CanAms are great. Hoping for some more races at their classic tracks. Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Cookie on August 10, 2021, 02:41:34 PM +0100 Leo if you watch the server replay you can see if you warping - (just uploaded...)
Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: Leo Menegucci on August 11, 2021, 01:20:21 PM +0100 Leo if you watch the server replay you can see if you warping - (just uploaded...) Well, now I'm confused. I watched the replays of these last test races and my car looks pretty solid, even when looking from others perspective. Nothing like the car bleeping or junping around one driver have reported. So this means from the server my connection was fine? Title: Re: UKGPL Season 38 - Fun + Test - CanAm66 - Charade - Aug 8 Post by: maddog on August 11, 2021, 02:01:35 PM +0100 I could see jumping of one foot, Leo. 30cm is not a big problem, IMHO. :)
