Post by: Dave 'Gizmo' Gymer on January 19, 2007, 11:00:46 AM +0000
First race of a short 3 event championship. No idea what scoring system to use yet!

All members welcome.

Practice: 20:15 (15 mins)
Qualifying: 20:30 (20 mins)
Race: 20:50 (40 laps = ~40 mins)

Track: Monza Junior
Cars allowed: Shelby Daytona Coupé, E-Type, Chevrolet Corvette, AC Cobra 289 (see note 5 below), TVR Griffith 400, Lotus Elan 26R
Time of Day Setting: 10:00
Start: Rolling

Server: UKGTL 2A; in the event that the lobby is unavailable, connect using Direct IP, entering games.avonrise.co.uk in the Add IP box
Password: See this post (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1665.msg42730#msg42730)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7).
(3) General information on the series can be found on the series home page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&group=46).
(4) The season will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.3 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=27).
(5) We cannot restrict the choice of Cobra on the server to the slower 289 model; if you join with the faster 427 model expect to be kicked!

The track choice may be controversial but since UKGTR will be running Monza GP I thought it would be nice to use the Junior track. The final chicane is very tight but we made it through in the TC-65 Yank Tanks so we ought to be able to thread our way through in these cars.

Take the E-type. It's the most stable cars of them all. Probably not the fastest, but certainly the easiest to drive.

Ok thanks guys, will give it a go on Thursday!?
Takes me back to when I had my Mark 2 Cortina estate in real life!?
Handled like a barge!! Wallow wallow!!
Like the Elan at the mo but the TVR is definitely fun!? if you like spinning!!
The Corvette is fun too!!

Should be interesting racing!

Thanks

You can by moving the car folder of the 427 car to somewhere else temporary. If someone tries to take the car the server will just kick him off :P

But I think you can thrust on everyone for not taking the car ;)

Shame shame shame. I was cruising in the Vette when my rear wheelarch got stuck behind the tyrewall and I spun. Engine stalled and I tried to restart it, but there wasn't enough time, so I pressed ESC. Didn't want to collect the nr2. Kinda stupid of me, I had a 9s lead, and still I tried to squeeze past that chicane.
The Vette was fun at this track, especially against those Elans  ;D

Well, that was disappointing. :( Didn't really get a handle on the car in qualifying but once into the race I felt a lot more comfortable and soon picked my way past the Corvette of Radius and the Elan of Mark J and into a clear 10th place.

Was starting to make an impression of Shark's Cobra as he began to struggle with his tyres when my ADSL connection went... and came back... and then GTL dropped me anyway. >:( >:( >:(

Had fantastic fun for the first half of the race, having really great David and Goliath battles with me in my nimble little Elan against the boat of radius   and DG's rather sexy looking Tiv. It was a bit frustrating to be all over them like a cheap suit in the corners, only for them to leave me standing on the straights, but great fun all the same.
I could almost see Rad smugly waving as he drafted back past me each time, only to watch helplessly as i cut up the inside of him at Parabolica with me grinning like a cheshire cat ;D
I did all that hard work battling the big beasts only for Ribeiro and Pops to sneak back up on me  and in a lapse of concentration i lost the back end at T1 :(
They scampered off with a 5 second lead and as i drove like a loon to catch up, i then threw it off at the same flipping corner 3 more times. :-[
Everyone behind me had retired. and with a 13 second deficit, decided to bin it as a cricked neck i've suffered from all week was giving me serious jip. :surrender:

Good fun but dont really like the GTC65 class, they are too unpredictable and hopeless in tight corners...or is that just me ::) :P

Must be something in the water - I did mine in the NGT Sprint race on Tuesday night. Didn't notice anything wrong whilst racing but once the adrenaline stopped flowing after the race I realised I'd done something quite painful to the right side of my neck. :death:

Good fun but dont really like the GTC65 class, they are too unpredictable and hopeless in tight corners...or is that just me ::) :P

It's just you (and the Elan). These cars probably have to be driven more smoothly than any others in GTL but they slide around delightfully. ;D

Noooo, ya silly, these cars need to be thrown around. Show them no mercy. There should be more bugs on the side window, than on the front windscreen  ;D

Wow that was fun!

Qualified in 7th best ever!

Ran well at the start and picked off a few mainly due to their minor errors.
Frightened me to death when I was in 3rd!!
Unfortunately whoever it was in 4th was catching all the time
and with tyres going I was struggling to maintain the pace!
So to the last lap in 4th and completely got blinkered chasing 3rd, missed my braking point and slammed into the wall!!
rejoined for 7th so can't complain too much but
will reflect on what could have been!!

Many Thanks to team mate Tom Tinman Cooper for sharing his set up to allow me to be anywhere competitive.

Go Team Oldie!

Grats to the podium! excellent racing!

M.

Very happy with my 8th place, I don't think I've touched GTL since GTR2 came out!

I was a fair bit off the pace so I decided to just drive fairly conservatively and consistently and see how the race progressed.

I had a nightmare first couple of laps, really slow, I dropped down from 10th to 14th, that was a lack of "match practice" but when I got up to speed I managed to catch the 3 way Jonzo/Radius/PRibiero scrap. Mark went off followed by a heart-stopping Radius spin in the 'wall of death', I'm not sure how I missed you Rad!

I was then stuck 1s behind Pribiero for what seemed like forever, every time I put a good lap in, he did the same. Great driving. We caught Bernie and had a nice scrap for a while until Pribiero then Bernie fell off leaving me on my own with the challenge of trying not to get lapped which I managed by about a metre or two in the end :D

I know I'm probably in the minority but those club circuits can be FUN ;D

Replay (http://ukgtl.simracing.org.uk/) and provisional results (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&event=309) available.

Sorry about the cock-up with the server password and name. Will get it right next week. Didn't know about the password change until Gizmo pointed it out to me on TS and haven't been getting emails from the forums so I'm running round like a headless chicken 2 minutes before server trying to catch up with stuff.

I thought the tvr tyres would go off earlier, in the start i had no pace for ruskus and foster, i was very slow in the chicane maybe because car felt very diferent with lots of gas.

still happy with Pole and fastest lap.

Great adrenaline rush racing round this tight little track, knowing that every time you spear through the chicane of death it may be your last  :ninja:

Started 6th and had a great battle with a couple of TVRs throughout the race. The Elan was no match on the straights but in the different league in the turns. Finally got into a safe 4th with 10 laps to go and set about closing down on Mason who was 4 seconds up the road. Caught him with 4 to go and eventually made the pass on the penultimate lap.

Was well clear crossing the line to start the final lap, but as I braked for T1 I could see Mason in my mirrors wasn't braking at all, so I had to go straight on and wait for him to fly past rather than getting speared by a 100 mph TVR. By then it was a bit late for turning in and the back end came round when it touched the grass verge. That was just enough to allow the 5th place Baracus to steal my podium  :(

Congrats to Stu Foster who was almost untouchable in the GTL arena as per usual ;)

Not really a fan of the muscle cars in GTC-65. Hopefully we'll get to drive the nice cars like Fez and Healey soon. Spent all of practice/qual trying to find a setup that I could drive a lap with. Just managed to get there and in the race had some good battles early on. Then started feeling like there was no grip and hit the tyres twice allowing Gizmo to catch up. Then he dropped and I had a very boring section of the race with no one in sight, but started getting smoother and faster and more consistent with no one around and my pace was back to as fast as I could go with the car. With about 3 laps to go I was in touching distance of Tom Cooper, but no chance of catching really, but Martin ahead even further had a mare last lap and I passed his recovering car at T1 to take 6th.

Well done Stu on the win and unlucky half you guys for disco's and accidents etc.

Sorry about that, got so blinkered trying to catch you that I completely missed my braking point and slammed into the wall.
I obviously got away without hitting you. Sorry to here it forced an error and loss of podium!?
You deserved it!

I can't apologise enough!?

The TVR was a tricky thing to tame - it wants to slide into the corner, scrubbing speed off. In quali, I tried a few setup tweaks that helped the car run more consistently but this stopped outright speed, and quali was a few tenths of practice PB, for third on the grid.

THe first few laps were great fun. Assassani and Ruskus were dicing for the lead, I was right behind Assa, and Baracus was right behind us all (in the corners, at least!). Assa took the lead for a bit, then Ruskus got it back. For several laps I had some excellent battles with Assa; this allowed Ruskus to get away. Several times I was beside Assa around T1, but couldn't hold position as the road swept left to T2. Eventually, though, I had a good run out of the chicane and held position down the main straight to get second place.

Ruskus was 9.5 secs ahead. Wasn't sure if I would catch him, but on the next lap the gap was down by almost a second to 8.6. On the next lap, though, we only just missed the parked Ruskus in the chicane, nipping between his bonnet and the wall. Wahoo - the lead!

From then on, it was a case of trying to make no mistakes. I gradually pulled away from Assa, as he had a few slidy exits from the tight bends. When the gap was about 5 seconds I relaxed, braked earlier, accelerated more gently - the result was the lap times stayed the same, going to show these cars need a bit of caressing in a race.

Well done Assa for some great fighting. Shame Ruskus got stuck on the wall, would have been interesting if we could catch ya!

Stu

Actually despite my earlier comment of not really enjoying 'most' of the GTC's, i quite enjoyed throwing the Elan about last night. Its the first time i've used it and was thoroughly enjoying dicing it up with the bigger cars, me and Rad trailbraking into parabolica together was great fun  8)

Just for some reason the elan decided it didnt want to get through T1 anymore unless i brought it to a virtual standstill, no idea why as the tyres were not worn according to my GTLPD  ???, the back end just broke away, several times.
I like driving the TVR, but it can be really frustrating unless you spend an age getting re-familiarised with it.

He'h DG, its my right side of neck thats gone too...does it class as a sporting injury ? :whistling: Seems to be sim-racing thats causing it. :-\

I think so - perhaps we can sue SimBin or Logitech?

Assuming we're both right handers I wonder if lefties crick the left side of their necks? Enquiring minds want to know...

I was warped out last night, about 3 frames between the start/finish line and the concrete wall, apologies if anyone was involved.  Apologies to Ruskus I didn't realise I was faster though those first series of corners than you and just nudged you on the exit to the back straight.  I finished up in the wall but you appear OK in your Yank Tank.

Np Bill. I didn't expect your nose there, and I was already steering for half an hour in that tank  ;D. It was a small nudge, and the Vette didn't move a muscle because of that little Elan  :)

Yes, BUT, it was also then a might embarrassing when they drove past in a carefree and easy way around any line of the corner whilst I hung on for dear life in my Cobra under round the outside of parabolica.
