Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1967 F1 (Works) - Zandvoort - Sep 5
Post by: Rainier on August 27, 2021, 10:16:44 AM +0100
Season 39 – 1967 F1 WORKS Grand Prix – Round 1 – Zandvoort
The first race in the 1967 Grand Prix WORKS series finds us at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands.

The first race on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit was on 7 August 1948. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Zandvoort on June 19, 1955. It was race 5 of 7 in the 1955 World Championship. The 100-lap race was won by Mercedes driver Juan Manuel Fangio after he started from pole position. His teammate Stirling Moss finished second and Maserati driver Luigi Musso came in third. Racing continued up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

Towards the end of last season I became unable to compete and I've had to completely reinstall GPL, and everything else. I can now see the race list in Igor but when I tried to join the UK GPL server it told me I 'wasn't qualified' to enter the race. Isn't this an open server that anybody should be able to join? Never seen this message before, what does it mean?

I think that error is normally caused by using the wrong 60fps patch.

Yup, didn't have those added.. but now I do and nothing changes. However, I can join the oAo server and also Singion_Hawk which are both running 67 events....

Hmmm, I've set up the Works server for a test. We'll be using UKGPL_04 for tomorrow's race so if you can join that you should be OK.

Nope. Wasn't able to join... and in the middle of that ***** Norton decided that gplrc67.exe?? was bad and has deleted it. I cannot find it in the quarantine, so now I can't even join a race at all..... ****** hell

This will be my last post in this thread on this matter - I'll start a proper thread later. I reinstalled GPL today, and it was working. I have a shortcut on my desktop and GPL 1.2.0.2 will run. GPL 1.3 will not - just causes black screen of death from which there is no return other than switching PC off.

After the reinstall I was able to run GEM, see the racelists (the reason I had to reinstall was because I could no longer see these). However, I was never able to join a race because of the messages described above. However since the BSOD started appearing I can no longer get into a race, or even see the failed connection message... any ideas gratefully received. I'll wipe and restart everything tomorrow... but only if wake up in a better mood than I am now...

Cheers

Arf

The driver Renato Jungle does not remember the password and is unable to register here at Works.
Please Phil, consider him signed up.

I feel your pain and frustration, because I have struggled at times with doing what should be a straightforward install.
l
As a confirmed technophobe and general klutz around anything computer related I will offer my personal "Idiot's guide". Not necessarily in chronological order, just things that I recall giving me grief.

The first and most obvious thing is....If you have access to an old working install of GPL anywhere ( old laptop, discarded PC etc.) then you can simply copy the SIERRA folder to where you now want it to be, using a USB stick and it should work. Once you have a functioning GPL you can add the bells and whistles.
To this end I now keep a backup copy of my GPL ( maybe a few months out of date  ::) but at least it gets me 90% back to where I was if it all goes t*ts up).
Failing that:-

Did you install GPL using the GPLEA Installer? as opposed to a manually installed version. I find that it is a lot safer.

I still run GPL 1.20.2 (?) not 1.3 and it works so I don't try and fix it.

Be sure to untick the Intel Speedstep box in GEM/CONFIGURE menu

Get GEM/IGOR working with 67 carset first, don't forget the 60fps patches AND in order to join current UKGPL servers you will need the new Antifreeze Patch If any of these patches are missing you will be denied access to the server. I also leave the graphics at 640x480 until I am sure things are working. That way, when I increase the resolution, I know where any issues originate.

When adding some of the carsets/mods be sure to check that you have all of the required circuits downloaded and installed as detailed in the download notes. Failure to do this has caused my install to CTD in the past.

Double check the IGOR server address is now the gplrank server address, but it sounds like you had that or you would not have reached IGOR.

I'm sure there are other holes that I have found to fall into. and as I remember them I will add to this post.

One item to add to the useful informatin above.  Anyone who decides to scrap and throw away an old troublesome GPL install, should first grab the 'Setups' folder.  It's in the GPL\Players folder, and can be pasted into your new installation.  Better to get setup, than upset  :D

I was quite pleased with my driving tonight. I expected to be last and I was, Tris and JonnyO would have lapped me no matter what. But without the 2 mistakes I made (which cost me a lot of time) I might not have been lapped by the 3rd, 4th and 5th placed guys. So my goal in the next race is to not make any mistakes. The standard in the Works is very high, any mistakes get punished. It is very hard to make up for lost time. For Alain to fight back from last place to 4th was very impressive!

Clive/All

Thanks for the comments - running the autopsy over at http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=3714&st=140. I've done all you mentioned Clive and I think the install I have used on my PC was simply copied over from the previous PC - don't recall installing it on this one, and it worked for years.

Anyway, I'll keep trying and join the season when I can...

Arf

Congratulations to Tristan for the win and Farinha for 3rd place with Cooper, a strategically valuable result.

Zandvoort is a track where you need to find the right tangencies and surf it, very fast and fun too, but a small mistake will slow you down on soft sands.

I ran the entire race very close to Tristan and left an attack for the last lap, but on the penultimate lap I had a small correction and that was enough to lose 60 meters......... and you shouldn't let 60 meters of advantage to Tristan in the last lap !!!!

We will have more riders in the next race...there are some still on trips, Renato Jungle himself has not returned from his fishing trip

Eventful race for me for all the wrong reasons, I counted 10 incidents after watching the replay including failing to avoid a spinning Clive and barging past Doni into T1, sorry Doni, shoulda waited another lap.

I had reasonable pace but had to watch the front temps and try to steer more with the rear, which contributed to some of my later spins/offs, but mainly it was driver error, during one off I simply didn't steer enough and had time to question what the hell I was doing as I headed for the sticky grass.  Anyway, silver lining was that I managed to take about half a sec of my Cooper pb and in so doing claim bragging rights over team mate Arf  ;D

Cheers Guys, see ya next time

Hello everyone,

Well done Magic, JonnyO and Enrique.

I'm lucky to finish in 4th place because I couldn't avoid 2 accidents in front of me and I ended up last.
At the end of the race I just managed to pass Bastian who very sportingly didn't close the door on me, thank you Gentleman.

Well done everyone and thank you for the organization.

An 8th place finish was most probably on the cards Baab notwithstanding.

Zandvoort is a circuit I don't particularly care for as the constant see-sawing on the steering wheel is very tiring and a challenge with both my shoulders sporting serious injuries in the last few years.  I took an Advil pain pill about 45 minutes prior to the start and I think that it kept the pain down to a tolerable level.

Nice job by my Latin amigos, Jonny & Ricky, for scoring podiums!  :)

Grats to the podium guys. Apologies to Baab for involving him in my totally unnecessary spin.

I was a little , no make that a LOT, frustrated in this race. I felt that I had a comfortable setup that would not overheat the tyres if I was gentle with the gas pedal. My qualifying pace was encouraging and I was quite content to follow Tris and JJ at a safe distance over the early laps as my tyres came up to working temps.
I had Baab in his Cooper behind. but I was quick enough in the right areas to keep him behind me. Then, for some dumb reason, I simply forgot to brake and the rear gracefully waltzed around sending me into the dunes.

That was embarrassing enough but, it was then that I discovered that my Logitech shifter would not engage reverse!! I was parked facing up a 45 degree slope on sand. No way would the car move forward ( or roll back under gravity ) and I had no reverse gear to get me back to the tarmac. All forward gears were tried, but as the leaders came around to lap me I decided to quit rather than risk involving anyone else in my misery.

Ah well, on to the next race.  ::)

<snip!>
I discovered that my Logitech shifter would not engage reverse!!
<snip!>

ok, of no use now of course...

But if you also have the shift-up/shift-down functions configured in GPL (flappy padels or even keypad + & - keys)  you should be able to use those to change down/override current gear selection on your H shifter.   Then when the H-shifter is next moved, that gear will be used/normal operation resumed.

It never ceases to amaze me how many sneaky dodges/keystrokes etc. there are within the labyrinth of GPL  :o  Thanks Dave, I will need to check the CONTROLS page when I next fire up GPL  ;)
