Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1955 GP - Balcarce - Sep 12
Post by: Phil Thornton on September 07, 2021, 11:19:01 PM +0100
Season 39 – 1955 GP – Round 1 – Balcarce

For the first race in the 1955 Grand Prix series we will visit Balcarce in Argentina.  Balcarce was the birthplace of the legendary Argentinian driver Juan Manuel Fangio and we will be racing on the circuit that bears his name. The Autódromo Juan Manuel Fangio (https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.8827992,-58.2666651,2a,60y,218.71h,82.3t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWXl3oJjJ-oJ2kYzeuJa9tQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en) was opened in his honour on 18th January 1971. The circuit has hosted events in the Turismo Carretera series but it has never hosted Formula 1 races and to this day remains rather underdeveloped. However, it deserves a place on the 1955 calendar due to its association with Fangio.

Do we know who the PRO drivers are yet? I'm going to need all the help I can get with the extra tokens  ;)  ;)

(I was driving the CA71 cars earlier today and then I jumped into the Gordini - quite an experience)  ::)

UPDATE: I've just created a spreadsheet (Google Sheet) to help with the token system. Here's a link should you wish to try it. In order to EDIT it you'll have to open it, click on FILE and then MAKE A COPY. Instructions are included in red text on the Sheet but it should be pretty self-explanatory.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12SxYDGmgqdBVF8-XZSDJWqcBbhKr-1qrD_hd8ofoXcM/edit?usp=sharing (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12SxYDGmgqdBVF8-XZSDJWqcBbhKr-1qrD_hd8ofoXcM/edit?usp=sharing)

There is a second tab on there for those of you racing the F2 cars this season.

Thanks Pete for the preadsheet! I had already create mine the old 55's way on pencil and paper but I'll adopt the modern ways  :wheelchair:

Looks like the rules page has been updated.

I'll update the race post when I've decided who the Works drivers are. I'll probably get that done tonight.  ;)

Sorry Pete, I didn't express myself right. In fact I had not seen the extra tokens for privateers part and thoght that was an update of the initial post.

I was hoping that we would all be using the same software this season.   ::)

Had lots of fun but any chance of a good result vanished when someone dismantled Yannick's car at T1 and left me off-roading to avoid the damage.

I was also delayed by Evil doing some ballet moves at T1 on lap two!

Grats Phil and podium.

That was actually quite enjoyable.

Had some fun following Fran for a number of laps.  Then managed to pass, just to throw it away at the next corner.
Wasn't sure if I'd picked up an engine issue, or just down due to loss of the tow.  Seems like a bit of both.

Apologies for the broadside-hit Philippe.
Looked as though your car was upside-down & on fire,  so you did well to get that moving again/complete race distance!

Cheers all.
Dave.

With 25 registered drivers it is borderline 2 servers. To be safe I opted for 2 but we could have managed with 1 because only 18 drivers turned up. I've rearranged the championship tables to have separate championships for Works and Privateers (which is the way to do it if we have 2 servers).

The race was great for me. I managed to make my car advantage pay off but I was surprised how fast Bastian's Vanwall was down the straights. My Maserati couldn't match it when we were side by side. I lost the lead on lap 1 and I spent the next 10 or 12 laps trying to pressure Bastian into a mistake. When it finally came I squeezed through but by then Evil had caught us and he was all over my gearbox like a rash. I manged to stay cool and keep the car on the track until the end. Somehow I don't think my championship lead will last long but I'll enjoy it while I can  :jumpjoy:

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.

Congratulations Phil !!!! It was a beautiful victory.
In the works there were only 3 cars not Gordini , they made the podium ! There was a sameness in the strategies! It must be a very competitive championship, we could ask the drivers to confirm their presence in the next races 55, it was a shame to have 2 servers. Those who do not confirm their presence are subject to being left off the grid. Just a suggestion! ;)

For sure you was faster than me but mistakes have penalised your race.In contrast to the race at Zandvort with the  67 ,the engine did not explode after few laps and i was able to finish.

I need to look at what happened at T1 on the replay, I was surprised to be airborne so early in the race  :o.  I had profited from having a non-Gordini car off the grid and was up to 3rd at T1, then instantly back to the rear of the field  :-\

I think the first turn incident damaged the springy things a little as the braking became a little random for the rest of the race. Just how bad, I discovered  we started Lap 2. i thought that the ballet moves that Clive Loynes referred to were quite skilful lol As I gave the brake pedal a first hard pump from full speed the car snapped sideways and I thought that I was heading for the scenery and an early exit. Luckily it was only a "pump" and because I had released the brake the did a graceful pirouette ( very effective at slowing the car!!! I need to practise that  ;) ) and easily made the corner.

The rest of the race was a chase after the swarm of Gordinis before hunting down Phil and Bastian. Bastian had the Vanwall hooked up and even Phil's Maserati could not find a pass until Bastian ran wide, Phil went through to take the lead and I took my chance to follow him.
The final 12 laps were epic.  I was completely over the limit trying to get at Phil, mainly because managing the braking was an adventure. Eventually I discovered that trying to avoid the brakes snatching to the left was easy if I kept the brakes in the RED zone so that they were not too strong.

Grats to Phil who maintained the pace and consistency, I could just not close those last 50 mtrs to attack him over those 12 laps.  :thumbup1:

THe start was good, i could keep Phil behind me first but more and more pressure from phil so my brakes went yellow.
The first time i ran wide i shifted down too early into first, Phil could not avoid but he waited sportsman-like until i recovered.
But there was Clive who closed up. the next part is already described by Clive, and i tried to attack but it was not more to get with the standard setup.
Even i had good top speed, gears were not set to optimum. but thats the price of not practicing....

Grats to Phil and Clive and all finshers.

Pole for me  :D (no merit, just the most powerful car!!) and well helped from the start by the crash behind me at the 1st braking (just saw a few cars across in the mirrors!!)
I thought I could manage my lead quietly, but I saw Pete in the distance nibbling away at the seconds :(...He ended up catching me a little before the end, after I resisted as much as my brakes would allow, I couldn't hold him back from taking the win :'(

As suggested above, maybe asking for confirmation before each race would allow a full server.
(well, it allowed me to finish on the podium ;))

What a fantastic mod this is. I was in the Connaught for this first round and I was super pleased to qualify 2nd. Christian's big red car was fast away from pole but not as quick as the yellow car in 3rd (Francesco?). Sorry - I've not had a chance to look at replay to put names to faces. That took me by surprise and then I made a hash of braking for T1 which took me into the side of the faster car. A few bumps, a semi-spin and a heap of guilt meant that I did the gentlemanly thing and waited until the yellow cars had passed me again before charging on. I then had a tough battle from 4th to work my way up to the front. I was gaining on Christian by about 30 yds per lap and I really didn't think I'd be able to pass him before the chequered flag.  A few scary moments, with very little in the way of brakes, made for a lot of fun but I love the way you can chuck these cars into a corner sideways in order to scrub off speed. The real life drivers must have had balls of steel.

So, very grateful for the win in the Connaught. I really love the sound of the 55 cars as well. You can almost smell them as you drive.

Thanks for letting me join you in this series.

Well, i squeezed every inch of performance from this Little blu teapot, and for half the race i could follow the front pack, the brakes constantly on the edge but was fun. At the end i finished where i started from, i was third After the T1 incident but my pace wouldn't allow more. I resisted the assaults from clyve in the end but fortunately for me he missed the braking point a couple of times.

Also for me, i think would be great a call before the race to allow a full grid when possible.

I have just watched the replay of T1.................

Sincere apologies to Yannick  :(.

I remember seeing a car in my mirror and thinking " that Gordini is a safe distance behind", then I focused on getting myself safely into the apex on cold tyres.  When there was contact I thought that either
, there had been another car in my blind spot, or someone had totally missed their braking point and taken out several cars.  Bu it appears that we were both aiming for the same piece of tarmac  :-\.

I have submitted an incident report.

I saw you breaking earlier than me and saw there was a gap and dived into it without thinking twice. It was ill judgement on my part.

Grats to Phil on a fine drive to the victory!  Well done.

Super job by Evil Clive...now forever to be known as 'Pinwheel Clive' after his epic 360° loop going into T1 to start Lap02 where he hardly lost a moment of time...to nail down P2.  I unintentionally held him up earlier otherwise he may have had more time to work on the lead.

Good job by Bas to score P3.

No less than six Gordinis took to the field.  I managed a clean if unremarkable run after some early dicing with Clive Loynes.  A P7 finish is not unwelcome as it could have been far worse.  Only the sad exits of Yannick and Ricky got me up to that placing.  I live to fight another day.  :)
