Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Spa67 - Sep 24 Post by: Cookie on September 20, 2021, 11:30:37 AM +0100 Season 39 - CANM71 – Round 2 – Spa67
In the early 1920s, motor racing began to be held on the public roads between Francorchamps, Malmédy and Stavelot in Belgium, about 50 miles west of the (still to be proposed) Nürburgring in Germany. The Spa track was enlarged in 1951 to become the layout used here. This track hosted the Belgium Grand Prix until 1970, when the F1 drivers association declared that it was too dangerously fast. Part of the old track was used to create a shorter lap in 1979 and the F1 cars returned in 1983. Eau Rouge is one of the most famous parts of any track in the world. The stream gets its name from the presence of iron oxide deposits giving it a reddish colour. The track crosses the Eau Rouge again halfway around the lap, on a bridge seen as a low parapet either side of the track just at the start of the Stavelot corner. Please check the Season 39 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1531&theme=6) regarding rules and the CanAm 1971 pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1611&theme=6) in particular. Handicapping The cars will be divided into five groups, each group containing cars of similar performance. Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". Drivers will be limited to cars from specific groups based on their grade and must choose 2 cars and drive them an equal number of times. Rolling Start! In RL CanAm started rolling ;) We do a rolling start to the exit of Les Combes in one line following the polesetter ~100mph Incidents will not be moderated as we race as gentlemen. One Shift-R is allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.
Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". Yes, all CanAm cars are FIA Group 7 in the SROU database, so we do not get extra records for 66 or 71 ::) Quote Group 7 two-seater racing cars (1966 to 1975) A field of Group 7 cars participating in a Can-Am race in 1973 The FIA’s new Appendix J regulations for 1966 listed a category for “Group 9 two-seater racing cars” in its draft versions, but this was amended to “Group 7 two-seater racing cars” by the time of publication of the 1966 FIA Yearbook.[1] The new Group 7 regulations specified that cars must be fitted with fenders, windshield, two seats, two doors, headlights, taillights, rollbar, a dual braking system and a self-starter and that they must utilize commercial gasoline.[1] Group 7 cars were defined as "two-seater competition vehicles built exclusively for speed races on closed circuit".[2] There was no minimum production requirement necessary to earn homologation. As such, the regulations allowed manufacturers and teams freedom to create unique racing cars with no limitations on engines, tires, aerodynamics, or dimensions, as long as the car had room for two seats and was enclosed in bodywork. Races for Group 7 cars were generally short sprints, with few accommodations made for driver comfort. Not serious, just a bit swollen, but I'm going to have to pass :( Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Spa67 - Sep 24 Post by: Alain Maurice on September 24, 2021, 08:35:04 PM +0100 Hi Axel

Dear me... It would seem that Monsieur Bot is headed for yet another disqualification. He crashed and reset on Lap01 and ditto on Lap07. That would be before half distance so no points for him. Tsk, tsk... Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Spa67 - Sep 24 Post by: Pete Bennett on September 25, 2021, 11:10:25 AM +0100 Just had a look at the server replay cap. Great job, Pete! Thanks, Doni. I benefited from others' mistakes. With about three or four laps remaining I could see that Ziu and Axel were having a battle 1.5 miles ahead of me. Then the numbers on Prib seemed to tell me that they had come together somehow. By the time I caught them, it looked as though Axel was waiting for Ziu to pass, so I can only imagine that Cookie was being a gent and letting Ziu re-take a place. I followed closely for a lap, deciding to hang back as I could see that they were racing hard. On the way into Blanchimont, Axel over-cooked it and fell off the track. This seemed to unsettle Ziu so I was able to pass him later whilst he was re-composing himself. All I had to do then was keep it smooth for the last two laps. It felt very good to take the chequered flag. Earlier I had fun with Tris, narrowly avoiding his "off" on L7. On L5 or 6 (I can't remember which) he was much quicker than me up the hill into Blanchimont so I let him go. No point in holding up a quicker driver - he was going to pass me at some point anyway. I'm not the fastest of drivers but I was rewarded in this race by playing it safe; keeping my distance and taking no risks. I'm really happy to have driven 14 pretty faultless laps without any resets. Hats off to Cookie who was still 3 seconds a lap quicker than us mere mortals. These cars are so rewarding to drive - slow and smooth seems to be the key and GENTLE on the throttle. See you all next time :) Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Spa67 - Sep 24 Post by: fpolicardi on September 25, 2021, 01:20:07 PM +0100 These cars are so rewarding to drive - slow and smooth seems to be the key and GENTLE on the throttle. See you all next time :) Yeah, with all that tourque you can go in 4th at La Carriere and first bend at Stavelot loosing nothing. Unluckily I lost control at braking for Les Combes lap2, as I lift for braking my steer went right and flied in the wood restarting last. After a good backup, also for other misfortune, at last but one lap I found Tris stuck in the haybale at Eau Rouge and crashed to him. Luckily I could continue, but almost lost the position. As said by Doni, the rules are for all and if someone doesn't respect them affects other drivers race for nothing.Grats Pete! Without penalties, those who break the most rules, will gain the most points. If penalties are not applied, the competition will become skill versus skulduggery.

The result of the 69x I have corrected as far as I could. |
